The single most difficult thing a game developer can achieve is getting the player emotionally invested in the characters. There are so many good games out there that if they only managed to do this, they would be great games. I had a blast playing Ys VIII up until that scene where he finds her, and that was the moment where this game became the masterpiece that it is.

Nah, the most difficult thing is to make a game that spans 60+ hours of gameplay that you won't get bored of. And these guys? They achieved it by a huge margin. Hell, even after you're done with everything you STILL want to keep playing!
I got so attached to Dana. During the ending when Dana disappeared and they had to say goodbye one last time, I cried like an infant.

It reminds me the farewell of Dana in the ending....
Adol knew Dana for a few days, but Dana knew Adol for thousands years, and it supported Dana while she sleeping in the tree... it is a brilliant touching plot
Try millions. 68 million to be precise. Quite often in Ys games, part of the plot ties into civilizations and events of the ancient pre-historical past. An example would be the fall of the Eldeen civilization and the sinking of the Atlus continent (Atlantis) as well as the Great Flood. The destruction of the Eternians is essentially the meteor strike which wiped out the dinosaurs and set in motion the events which led to the rise of mammals and eventually Humanity. Celceta has at least some connection to the Hindu Vedas or at least the concept of the Akashic Record.
Given the eternian buildings were still (mostly) intact it's not likely to have been millions of years as they would have crumbled to dust in that sort of timespan (plus there were at least three other major civilisations before her) so it's more likely that it is in the hundreds or possibly thousands of years
I felt an emotional bond with Dana during my playthrough, but after achieving the true ending, I finally understood the title of the game. I was half-expecting Dana to hopefully stay by Adol's side after everything is over, but that wasn't the case sadly. Seeing her say goodbye to everyone made me shed so many tears, but the relieving part was that we know she is well, and she will continue to watch over everyone and the Lacrimosa.
Hence the name: Lacrimosa of Dana.
What an amazing game
And Dana probably stays for DNA, cause she becomes the goddess of evolution.

I wonder if Falcom will ever make an Ys better than Ys VIII. They have such a hard task ahead of them.

They still can make better, after all Ys 8 has a few weakpoints that mean in the next part Falcom themself can create another masterpiece
Hard to make a game with such a sense of adventure, entertaining combat system, and cool characters to endear yourself to all the way to the end again, like ys 8 did
Smart, strong, kind, sexy and a feaking badass force to be reconed with. In one word:
Dana.

I think they absolutely nailed her voice acting too. It's adds to that unique charm of hers. They recently re-recorded the dialog with a better localised script, which is due to come out next year with a patch alongside the PC release. I really hope that charm is kept intact.
Haru Kazuhira yea heard about that, actually I didn't find that many flaws with the dialogue..., dana's VA brianna knickerbocker did a fantastic job, and so do other main cast VA too :-)
Pyro Haze they really did amazing voice acting. Dana's voice was so caring, so charming, so heartwarming. Ahh~~ just love this game.

I think this game has some of the best music in the series, which says a lot because this series has so many excellent tracks that should not be overlooked.
"Thank you for the bottom of my heart, for fighting until the end, thank you from the bottom of my heart, for accepting me as your friend" thesee two lines made me tears, the last words of dana of the final true ending, after she disappears.
This game has impacted me so much, with his history, his characters, his grafics... Especially the message that the history has in it, a faith for humanity, for that all can be changed for good.
It's only a video game, but this has touched my heart, best game I've ever played.

Great characters all around. Went into the game thinking it was gonna be meh and full of tropes and the likes. I'm glad i was wrong (for like 99 percent of it)
This game. What a masterpiece.
Same. I was expecting mediocrity and got far more. With bigger budget and more modern graphics game would be certainly more recognizable, one of the best jRPG this generation.
What I feel in this music is bittersweet. I can feel Dana's acceptance, her never give up and free will spirit and her kindness.
What i really liked about Dana and Adol was that it wasn't cliche as it always is (usually at least) in jrpgs and animes etc.
It wasn't like they we're "meant" to be romanced with one another. Dana was never interested in Adol, just from a friend point of view. And she was a strong woman on her own, and not flirty or submissive at all. She only had pure intention, and that was to save the world. This is something rare to see nowadays with female characters, especially in JRPGS where it's all about "shipping".
What im trying to say is.. DANA was a great character. One of the best female characters in YS, if not the best!

I hate it that so many players' interest seems to be fantasizing about who should have a relationship with whom. Dana is probably my favorite female character of all time, thanks to her great personality, her strong resolve and her unbelivably tragic story While the ending was very bittersweet, a romantic scene in the end would have ruined it all. It would have implied that she did all this out romantic feelings. But the beauty of her character lies in the fact that she is just a wholesome, compassionate and honest person that cares for the wellbeing of others more than her own.
Best female character in video gaming history in my opinion. Strong, kind, warm, stubborn and never gives up, full of energy and empathy. Someone you will not need to rescue and save everytime, someone who you can without any doubt turn your back on and entrust that she will have your back no matter circumstances, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENDS. DANA FOREVER!! Lets dance that Iclucian dance!

Falcom excel in Story, Characters development and the OST. i love it.
Dana is definitely a deuteragonist at the least, and likely the game's second protagonist alongside Adol. She's an incredibly flesh-out, well-written character, and unquestionably a heroine--one of the strongest I've had the pleasure of meeting in any story-driven game. To witness and endure the things she did, yet continue walking forward, isn't something most could ever do realistically; and to top it off, there was that decision she made in the true ending--one that even the strongest of people would be hesitant to make. Even with Ys VIII's fantastical story backdrop, Dana was about as real as it gets within the setting.
In terms of being a strong and impactful female lead, I'd put her on the same level as Virginia Maxwell from Wild Arms 3. They're both amazing female characters not because they can effortlessly kick everyone's asses like Samus Aran or Bayonetta, but because they were able to face the whole world--and the "reality" of their world--head on and prevail. They made a lasting change by following their own paths and their own beliefs and perspectives, despite all the bumps and bruises, mistakes and failures, and internal struggles during their respective stories. Hell, they're both dual-wielders--Dana with her chakrams and Virginia with her revolver arms. In many ways they're basically the same character.

I've seen lots of reviews and people saying that Dana was one of the weaker parts of YS VIII, but honestly...I don't see it. What I see is a character that's sharp, fierce, kind, adorable, charming, curious, strong, and calm and collective.
Dana actually reminds me a lot of Melia from Xenoblade Chronicles. Everything tragic that happens to Dana, she's still able to stand tall.
She's one of my absolute favorite video game heroines right along with Samus Aran, Shantae, Velvet Crowe, Lyn (Fire Emblem), Melia Antiqua, and Bayonetta.
That's really weird. I haven't heard anyone say Dana was the weaker part of VIII, but it also doesn't surprise me since Ys VIII seems...very polarizing depending on where you're looking.
@@FrogofWarRS I think it depends on which version you play honestly. I'm playing the original psvita release of the game, and from what I understand it's missing a ton of stuff from Dana's era. Her inclusion in that version feels a bit more forced leading up to chapter 6 as a result of this. There was a lot moments where I thought, "When can I play as Adol again?" because most of the eternian era stuff in the vita version was just dialog with a few boss fights.
@@deadturret4049 I have the Vita version. Should probably play that to see what is actually missing. Dunno if that has anything to do with what people say or feel about Dana, but it's worth looking into
@@FrogofWarRS All of that stuff where Dana can change into different forms is completely absent from the vita version, as well as a bunch of story stuff. Also apparently the vita version is also missing 2 characters from the eternian era sections.
I picked up the pc version a while back, so at some point I'll see what I missed.

There are three different endings - bad, regular and true. You must have got the bad ending by ignoring all the side quest, gifts etc. In a sense, I think the bad ending gives the player a stronger impression and memory to dana as its a true tragedy, however its not the true ending.

Adol's greatest adventure.
I legit shed my tears in that event when Dana was about to seal herself in a tree.
When she said "Finally, I get to meet Adol..."
That's very heavy... considering that she has to wait for 65 million years (basically at the K-T boundary parallel of the Ys' world) just to meet someone that will give her hope in the future.
If Feena has been around for 700 years before meeting Adol, Dana waited for Adol for ~65 million years.
Not to mention Dana gave Adol her mother's ring as a memento. A ring that started all of Dana's selfless and altruistic acts to people around her, before battle against Theos de Endogram.
That's why Dana has taken Feena's spot as the all-time Ys heroine for me.
I wonder what kind of blue-haired heroine with sad theme song that Falcom will offer in the future installment of Ys that can top Dana...

@@raisingwings2913 65 million years don't explain how the ruins were still pretty intact. I would say several thousand years at best. But again, we are applying real world logic here so it's hard to say anything.

I would consider Dana to be the only Nihon Falcom girl that's "waifu material"
But I didn't play the Trails/Kiseki games so I could be wrong.
Dana's really cool, but I wish that her design was less fanservicey. Even during a nuclear winter, she's wearing less than a typical RPG dancer.
Basically, she is a half-dragon(or half dinosaur?) so it's reasonable. And falcom doesn't want to pay too much on her : (
She's immortal by that point. Cold really isn't a problem.
@@LBCAndrew Now listen here. You can maybe think this, but it's completely bullshit and inconsistent with the story. The game explicitly says that Eternians become more vulnerable to diseases with the cold, which is why the cold fronts generated by the meteor's blanket of fumes is killing every remaining Eternian. And yet, not only her, but EVERY Eternian is dressed in the exact same skimpy clothes, from the deathly ill ones to Olga to EVERYBODY. It literally makes no sense. You can try to excuse Dana but everyone else is bullshit. Her goddess attire is ironically a lot more modest.
The reason for this is cause of the past civilizations itself. If you look into history of ancient peoples, their attire was pretty much this. They tried to grasp that concept i believe, so it looked similar to the past.
@@LunarTactician Also Rastell who is accompanying her says something along the lines that even their essence equipment cant protect them enough from the cold so the stuff they wear is most likely infused with some manner of essence to protect them from weather issues but not enough from THIS extreme cold (like normal winter times is 0 and below but the freezing they experience is -20 and lower)

None of the characters made me feel emotional, but the music was doing a great job. 😢
Although Dana's struggle from a overview point is very sad indeed, I actually felt more sad about the Captain's death because we were more directly involved.

FF series compare to this game is super lame imo.
FF 13 was utter trash, I couldn't play it, it looked so bad.
Square Enix and Namco Bandai could learn a thing or two from Falcom. I'm sick and tired of JRPGS resetting characters and worlds with each iteration. Final Fantasy and the Tails series both do this (and of course, they are the most popular with people. But not with me). That's why Ys and Legend of Heroes are my favorite JRPG series. Instead of constantly resetting the worlds and lore, they simply add to it with each new entry.
