lol my 1987 civic sedan did great in 1 ft of snow unplowed even tho some would come overtop of the hood at times onto windshield my 2014 crv would do even better this tesla doesnt seem almost worse than my civic sedan.
As someone who drives in snow a lot, with proper tires, this video is giving me a bit of anxiety. This is not a demonstration of the model y's capabilities but a show of all season tires incapabilities.
its just a click bait video u can try this with any car in 8" and even my 4x4 will be simialr to this shit its a dumb video, u need snow tires in this type of snow
Totally true. First thing I thought as well. In snow like that, all-season won't cut it. not in a hummer or a Tesla
@@soothingsouth7664 not true. A 4wd truck would have no problem in those conditions.
@@maiseydoodle wrong tires, no traction, doesn’t matter what the drive train is or if you have diff lock. Most 4wd trucks simply always run with mud or snow tires.
@@soothingsouth7664 I’m sure snow tires would have helped in this case but I’m telling you I drive off road all the time in deep snow in my Tacoma Limited with regular street tires. Never get stuck.

Tesla needs to put better all weather tires on these things. they are rated awful.
@@greekspiro nah it's more beneficial to put tires with better traction on dry where 99% of driving will be on rather than sacrifice a lot of dry traction for a tiny bit better snow traction.... buy winter tires, even budget ones are way better than best all seasons. don't spend 60k on a car and cheap out on tires then blame the manufacturer
@@greekspiro not at all. All season should only be used in California where theres no snow. Any all season tire sucks in any conditions below 7°c.
Always invest in a good snow tire since they cost less than the depreciation from an accident due to improper tires.
In Quebec it is against the law to not have snow tires from December 1st to March 15th and since that law has been implemented way less traffic collisions.
@@greekspiro yea, sorry I'm going to have to agree with all the other replies. Better to optimize for 99% of the weather (which is not snow). You can tell that these aren't snow tires by the way the snow is not sticking to the tire. Usually snow tires have these small small almost like cuts in them that catch snow and build like a snow layer to stick onto the other snow.

After owning my Y for a couple months and driving through the absurd snow, I’m pretty impressed especially with the all seasons I got. I just wish traction control wasn’t so strict! I just wanna spin!
If you get a performace, you should be able to adjust the mode to have fun spinning

For the love of god man turn the steering wheel when you back up and are stuck in snow. Anyways winter tires is the way to go. Coming from a guy that lives in Canada.

I just drove in 12+ inches past many stuck trucks, cars, and semis. 255/45R-19 PIRELLI P ZERO WINTER tires are amazing.

Great Test, Thanks. Top tip from a 4 wheeler, in a situation like this let the air out of your tires. Not all the way but from where you have normaly go down to around 25 PSI, This will give you from 200% to 400% more traction depending on your rim size. Larger low profile tires will give you less than say a 18" rim. When driving on black ice and heavy snow you should always do this, full tire pressure is only for hard pavement surfaces where traction is optional. Yes on a long drive it will give you less millage, but if conditions are bad, your much more likely to get home in your vehicle, rather than a tow truck, then millage is not your first worry. @@1MartinPL Those numbers are from my own tests with contact patch, as well from 35 years off roading. Tesla low profile tires will not be as great as the sidewall does not flex much. That said lowering the pressure will give you at least 100% more traction maybe even 200%. Easy test, Jack up your tire,paint a 4 inch wide strip from side to side put a newspaper under the tire then lower jack. Raise tire again, let air out to say 25 psi move paper to fresh spot lower jack again. Compare the contact patch to the first one. Or just drive to a snowey hill drive up till you can't. Back down, lower pressure drive back up, you will be amazed.

Manual shovel mode works pretty well. Very impressed with Y's performance in deep snow.
Best way to not get stuck is to stay out of deep snow, followed by winter tires.
If you get stuck there's an off road technique called steer for traction.
When you apply power don't keep the front wheels straight.
Steer sharply from left to right and keep steering left to rightas you add power until you have got unstuck. Seen this and it works. 👍

It is now Aug 2023. Thanks for this video by driving the Tesla in the snow. I just got my 2023 Model Y long range with stock all season tires, and is nice to know how it does in snowy conditions. I live in Northern Illinois and we also get this kind of snow levels at times during the winter months. Plus I have a inclined/sloped driveway, so the AWD should work out great.

You need snow tires
Winter wheels/tires have made a HUGE difference in the snow on my 2wd Chevy Bolt. I’d bet that you would have never become stuck with proper winter tires. I have Michelin X-Ice X13s.

We got 14.5 inches here in Nebraska on Monday. I don't have a Tesla, but my Explorer did fine without winter tires. Got stuck once trying to cross a main street that was plowed, but easily pushed it out.
Had a similar experience with all seasons and an Audi but our Y with OEM all seasons has really poor traction which makes me think it’s either 1. A poor all season 2. There’s a problem with how Tesla’s AWD system operates forcing you to need winter tyres

Looks like home here in Alberta, Canada, where we often have snow from October to April and snow tires are a fact of life.
what was your drive mode - standard or chill ... also, did you put in Creep or standard for regen braking. what was your setting?
I was curious about Tesla's corrosion warranty since driving on roads that have had snow can have salt which can do a number on the undercarriage. Turns out Tesla has one of, if not THE, best warranty for corrosion. 12 years/unlimited mileage. That's impressive.
As someone who lives in the mountains in WV this helped me feel a lot better about Model Y in snow. I currently have a Subaru Outback which is like a tank in snow. It seems like the Model Y should be close to what I can do now.
We have a subura and love it , I have a Honda civic hybrid and it sucks lol, omaze has a subura outback you can win

Based on experience also with RWD cars on snow / Ice I can definitely say that good winter tires make 90% of the game and the rest 10% is the ECP/DSC and the driver. Good video...already ordered winter tires :)
I've been Plowing with my Y and use the Nokian Winter tires... works amazingly well going through even deeper snow..
Nokian have the best winter snow/ice tires. Not surprised since they’re coming from Norway.

Just tested that myself here in Norway. MY on Nokian Hakkapeliitta R3s is handling steep hills with lots of snow.

vehicle height from the ground.
Ground clearance is extremely important. You can't solve everything with tires. and infinite torque of the line isn't actually what you want.
You'll never see a tesla down the roads I go.
Very fragile car. Very low ground clearance. Very fragile underbody. Not good for deep snow/ice.

I think what happened is you got 'beached'. That is, you got compacted snow beneath the body of the car that kept it stuck. The Model S has a great feature of adjustable shocks that can lift the car. So if you got into a snow bank with the suspension in the low position, and then raised it, it shouldn't be hard to free yourself. But with the other models, unfortunately, you may want to bring a shovel next time so you can dig yourself out. Or maybe ramps or something that you could jam under the tires that would lift the body up.
in these conditions YOU MUST use dedicated snow tires or even offroad specific tires and/or chains
If you actually get stuck. Try turning the front tires all the way to the right and try to move. Then all the way to the left.
Where did the noise come from when you were trying to get out of the snow? Was that the noise from pressing or releasing the pedal? Thanks.

Lots of talk about winter tires. So I guess that's the #1 thing to do. So does that mean you should have a complete 2nd set of tires/rims for your vehicle if you live in areas that get substantial snow? Then just change them all for the season, then change back after? I'm moving from San Diego to Idaho soon. Driving in the snow is a major concern for me since I've only done it a couple times when visiting, in very light snow.
Interesting. Of course, on grade in heavy snow, you gotta commit! Looks like those tires would do better as snow tires (for me, personally, in a mountain climate).
What about the heater? Does it get hot? Is it sufficiant?
I run Firestone Blizzak tires in the winter and would be very hard to get stuck.

I owned an Audi with all season performance treads and didn’t have the same slipping experience with Tesla in snow. I’m wondering if it’s a torque/weight related problem as well with Tesla or their AWD system. My area receives snow, but not enough to justify dedicated winter tires.

To be fair if you had winter tires, you would’ve been all set. In that depth of snow if you have seasonal tires you’re just asking to get stuck in that kind of situation.
I have a Nissan Rogue 2014 All wheel and traction control a bag of kitty litter will help get unstuck - I drive for Rideshare and live in Colorado I can be anywhere from Woodland Park to Winter Park Colorado. However, because I drive for Rideshare been looking at the model Y from Tesla. Rocky Mountains have volatile weather. This gives me confidence in buying the Model Y. Thanks for the video.

Stock tyres are 'stuck' tyres. Even on my iQ I have wintertyres, november ~ march. Even if You have 4wd, in snow, use the right tyres.
What are the squeaking/rubbing noises that can be heard during the attempts to get unstuck?
One thing I've always wanted to ask: do you get instant heat when you turn on heater? No engine to warm up.

Yes as instant as you are going to get. Good 7 mins sooner than gas cars.

Man you gotta learn how to rock your car forwards and backwards to get out. You don't want to be digging yourself a deeper hole, so the second you start spinning tires, you want to stop.
You'll want to put yourself in Drive (F), and then Reverse and use the momentum to rock forwards and backwards to get yourself out

My 4wd Tacoma Limited with street non aggressive tires has no problems in these conditions.

My crv handled 8 inches on 17 percent incline . I’m upstate New York and drive in the mountains to catch powder . I guess there’s a reason why u don’t see teslas on the mountains during a real upstate ny snow storm
The heating system has been an issue for the Y. My Y was delivered a month ago and already the heater and defroster do not work. Have to wait 2 wks to get a service appointment. I’m in NJ. 😡
So much for the reliability EV always claim. How has it been sicnce?
@@danielrice5474 after I was able to get an appointment with the service department, they determined the issue was a defective sensor and replaced it. Haven’t had any problems with the Y since, thankfully! It’s been more than a year and I’ve put nearly 20k miles on it

It looks like a long range model with 20 inch wheels I’m guessing it’s the Goodyear F1 all season tread, stock OEM.

"Gemini" or "Induction" is the name of the wheels that can come on a Tesla, not the "tires".
I’m guessing he had the Goodyear F-1 all season 20 inch tires based on the black wheels and it’s a non performance model.
I would never use all-season tires in winter.

Turning traction control completely off and letting it eat petal to the floor probably would get out of that, also sawing the wheel back and forth. I see people getting stuck all the time because of not completely turning traction control off and now there blocking the road. Awd and if it has snow tires should go almost anywhere in less than 8 inches of snow
Snow driving is all about tires. AWD doesn't matter.
I keep a shovel in the car during winter for these situations.
