You mentioned finding these at the library - I see them all the time at Goodwill and other thrift stores too! I'm an Amazon addict but I do love finding a great book thrifted - for a much lower price.
Hi MiMi G I have been following you for a while last year and got sick was not able to sew or get to my creation room. But God have got me on with life. Im back you sewing was so glad to see you are still teaching an I really love your instructions. With your sew along. Thanks for the advice on the sewing books. There are so many out there. But not that great with details. Good advice. Ms.K from Pittsburgh
Another great book to add to your collection is about your sewing machine...often overlooked. It can also be frustrating when your machine, sewing or serger, is not sewing quite right. Tame that Stitch Self Help for your Sewing Machine is Great information on all types of machines! Very practical advice for self help and when it’s best to take the machine to your technician. Also great information on needles, thread and tensions? And information on different types of machines, mechanical, computerized, sergers, embroidery.
I've been able to find a lot of good sewing books. At discount stores, thrift stores, used book stores or ebay. So you can get books between $1-$5 most people can't afford to pay the 29.99 plus the new hard back cost.
Thanks Mimi, I have watched Nancy Zieman every since my high school days. I now watch her reruns. She was amazing, and will surely be missed. Keep posting your clothing that you sew because I also watch everything you do😊 I have learned a lot because I watch every sewing show I can find. I always find important tips. Thanks again.
My favorite books often include French and Italian tailoring and haute couture construction techniques. As well as patternmaking, draping, and sewing, and even historical fashion and costume books that are incredible resources for couture and fancy dress clothing. I once followed a basic sewing book and a couture sewing book and compared the fitting of a bustier top by using the instructions given to create the bustier and it turns out couture dressmaking books win since it covers how to fit, boning placement, proper interlining and stabilizers, ironing techniques, and my favorite is the types of boning used.
Hi! I love the support you give, all information how to an what not. This is so beautiful. I been sewing on and off 48 years and never had this kind of information. Thank You so much.
I've been sewing for many years, but every time I watch your videos, I learn something new and helpful. You've given me just one more reason to buy more books, and since I love and collect books-- Thank you so much for your meaningful and generous sharing of techniques and ideas!
Fast fit and sewing for plus size are on my list. I bought Reader's Digest Complete guide to sewing in the 80's when I first started and recently bought it again. Excellent book that covers everything. And I've also got 'Fabrics' by Ann Ladbury that covers everything you could ever want to know about fabric.
Very good suggestions on books. I have a few of those in my sewing library. And that was very good advice about not obsessing over every little wrinkle.
After watching this the other day, I tried to find The Complete Book of Sewing, only to find, at least in the UK, it was about £50 on Amazon and that was used! Well imagine how excited I was to find it on an eBay auction yesterday and managed to obtain it for £7! Can’t wait for it to arrive 😃
Learning how to sew to fit different body shapes is the truth all creative sewist need to know. Cos it takes very little alterations to achieve that. Thank you sis for this video.🥰😘.
I am a huge fan of Sandra Betzina. I got to meet her at a sewing seminar. She is amazing. I have all her books. Fit for Real People is a great book too. I have that one and ton of other sewing books. I love vintage sewing books. My mom taught me to sew in the 70’s so I have all the books she started out with.
Thank you Mimi. I am just starting to sew. I took a class this summer but I really need more. I discovered your patterns and video just browsing through the fabric store. I am very hippy with a small waist so nothing fits right. Your video have been a tremendous help. As I obsess over every wrinkle but no more. I will be joining sewing academy. Again thank you for sharing your knowledge
Having a few reference books was the missing link I needed! It'll be so helpful when working through a pattern to have info at my fingertips. Thanks! 💕
love love this vid! i have had some books in my amazon's wishlist for months bcuz i was unsure of course, if to purchase them. so thanks Mimi for sharing your books💕
I have Fit for Real People, and have been looking for an all around sewing book. I'll look for the first book. And thank you for the pep talk at the end! You're so right!
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 we really do need to stop forcing our obsession with perfect wrinkle free fitting on others. I couldn't agree with you more about that. Before i started sewing I didn't even think about it, now I see it everywhere. I needed to really remember that bodies need to move and step back and accept that what ever fit I was getting even with a bit of effort on my garments was 110% times better than how my ready to wear clothes fit.
Thank you for that. I have fit issues so knowing that this library of literature is available is helpful. I have not posted other than my Railroad tote, due to fit issues. I will continue to read, practice, and eventually gain the confidence to post. Thanks again.
You’re not alone. Started sewing again after decades. Have not sewn a successfull garment yet. Do remember the sewing and garment construction, but really struggle with getting decent fit on my not so young anymore, curvier body. ☹️
Thanks Mimi for mentioning the over fitting issues. I use to over fit all the time and then I couldn’t sit down in my skirts! Thank you for taking the pressure off!
The Sewing Machine Accessory Bible by Wendy Gardiner is also a great book. She had a class on Bluprint as well if you got a membership before closing. It teaches you what all those extra feet are about as well as ideas on how to use them. It can speed up your sewing!
Thanks! I’ll check these out at my library... Love my library... I live in the city, so I can get any book sent to my library from other libraries. I take out many books, then purchase the ones that I can really use. Look on ebay, etsy, craigslist for used books! I just bought ‘Pattern Making Techniques for Beginners’ by Francesca Sterlacci... great book ☺️
THANK YOU. THIS WILL BE INTERESTING AND A CHALLENGE FOR ME. BECAUSE, I NEVER COULD LEARN HOW TO SEW FROM A PATTERN. I WOULD SKETCH IT OUT AND IMAGINE WHAT IT WOULD LOOK LIKE. FORTUNATELY, IT WAS ONLY FOR THINGS LIKE PILLOW SHAMS, A FLIMSY BATHING SUIT AND A SKIRT BUT, I'M READY TO GIVE IT A TRY. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. AND OH, SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS. (I'M AT WORK) 🙄☺️ 🙏
Great. Idea resource. As a new sewist, getting the fit right is indeed the most frustrating part. Well, other than cutting fabric. I utilize my local library A LOT in finding great sewing books, then I’m able to determine which ones are worth purchasing. I’d like to add 1 other that is immensely helpful: All New Fabric Savvy (How to Choose & Use Fabrics) by Sandra Betzina. This comprehensive book tells how to launder, interface, cut, mark; which thread, needle & stitch length to use; how to press, etc. it’s my top-notch favorite.
Thank You Mimi. This is so helpful. My husband bought me The Sew Book for Xmas just gone because that is the one I thought I need. Now I will search for these as reference books to support my learning in Sew it Academy which I'm loving, and can't get enough
Nice! I agree I have some of those and I do reference them. I have been sewing a long time but there are still times that a good book helps. I have also found that your tutorial s and depending on the garment, Gertie's books and tutorial s help slot. Thank uou
Such a great video. I have some of those books, and some others not mentioned but tbh rarely reference them. I should do more often. I have a youtube channel that focuses on plus size dressmaking, there is such a need for more plus size info. I think curvy and plus size have two different meanings. You can be both or one or the other, but often fit adjustments needed will be similar. Great to hear your patterns go up to the 28. A lot of companies have to be bought to plus sizes kicking and screaming so I've long campaigned for more size inclusivity in patterns.
Awesome selection I will have to look for these books especially the one for curvy girls. Right now I currently have Simplicity Simple the Best Book for Sewing and Coats & Jacket and then I found Sew it Academy ! This year my goal is to sew my own wardrobe! Thanks again for the great info.🤗
Thank you! Fitting others for me is a real issue😔...so much so I've decided to not sew for clients. I'm going to take some time off to hone my skills in this area- but I'll still be seeing for myself😉 (lol)!!! And I'm pretty sure that seeing for others is not my - but it's always nice to know how. I'll definitely be checking out these books. But my biggest thank you is for the advice on not obsessing.... that part is pure gold💛💛!!!!
Hello Mimi Korean subscriber n self learner. Just watching your coat making coat pattern I looked for . I saw that they are selling at wall mart. N book recommendation tks too. One thing is can I get your patter at Korea. Not down loading in material .it s first time to ask someone abt pattern.
Another really great sewing book that unfortunately is out of print is Sewing secrets from the fashion industry. Lots of info and step by step instructions with color photos for each step.
I do have a question: I do not want offend anyone, but I would like to share a concern, regarding, patterns and fittings. Couldn't it be easier to learn pattermaking, so we can transform our own personal patterns. May be we could save money....I do have a lot of beautiful patterns, but it is hard for me to understand all the explanation( I am from sud america,) and there, I had the blessing to be able to go to sewing class!... There, I learnt how to draft my personal pattern and it is so easy!.... ...

I WANT TO GET THAT SEWING BEGINNERS BOOK AND NANCY Z'S BOOK. IT IS ON MY WISH LIST.
The best piece of advice in this video is, “Don’t obsess over the wrinkles!” So much truth in that statement!

Thank you for the public library shout-out! So many great, FREE resources to be found at your local library.♥️

Good advice to not worry over every wrinkle! I find it helpful to focus on improvement in fitting, not perfection.

Been waiting for this video 🤗🤗
Great information. Thank you for sharing this great information. Please, can you share your Amazon link or the list?
