The cool thing about this laptop is you can easily upgrade the CPU, the ram, the SSD, and the display. You can also add additional drives either through the M.2 socket and/or the DVD drive slot, with the possibility of 3 total drives. Socketed CPU's pretty much disappeared on main stream laptops after this. I have a T530 with a quad core CPU, a IPS 1080P display, and it holds it's own quite well. The T440P was notorious for it's track-pad, Lenovo went back to the more traditional one with the T450 series, and some geeks have done a swap, but it requires some software hacks as well. Lenovo went to the low voltage chips after the 440P, it took until the T480 to get a chip as fast as the ones you could put in a T430 or T440P. As always I enjoy your channel, I've learned a lot and continue to use Linux more as I learn.

This is the exact kind of review I need. For me, there is no reason to buy a new laptop when a cheap used laptop with an SSD works well enough.

I daily drive a t440p with fedora right now, the great thing about this laptop is that everything can be upgraded. I HIGHLY recommend upgrading to a 1080p IPS screen and swapping out the trackpad for one from a t450p (they are 100% compatible). Both are fairly inexpensive and simple upgrades.

Thanks Jay, and reminding me I still need to bypass the EEPROM chip on my T430, and install Pop OS. One thing you might mention concerning the Thinkpad family at this time, it that they are fully customizable, you may change type of screen, keyboard, uprade to a faster processor, and so on.....They are real Swiss knife computers we would enjoy to run. Cheers!

I own a T440p and it's hands down the best Lenovo Thinkpad in my fleet. Yes, i upgraded the crap out of it. IPS screen, I7 quad core processor and 16 GB RAM. I also have the Intel integrated graphics model and it's served me extremely well over the years. I bought mine as a NOS model that never went into service so the condition is like brand new. After all these years, the grey finish still looks stunning and i prefer that color over the black of most Thinkpads.

You're spot on on the Lenovo T series. They are simply the best and the keyboard it is the best laptop keyboard period. The screen it is not the best but you can buy a new screen and it's very easy to swap it for a 1080p gorgeous new screen and it costs like 50 bucks. I have a few T series and I have this T440p too that is running Manjaro but it had almost every Linux distro because it was my work horse test bed. There is one not so good about the T440p and that's the track pad. I don't use it but it's not very good.

I bought a Lenovo T430 back in 2017 for $150 plus I had received a couple of Amazon credits for doing some beta testing, total cost was $250. Already had an SSD laying around. Kept the Windows 10 Pro installed. I did install WSL and Kali, but wanted a separate drive for Kali. It came with the I5 3320M, and 8gb of RAM. Last year I replaced the DVD caddy with an additional SSD, and installed Kali on that for work and learning. Dual boot on separate drives with absolutely no issues.

this was my office laptop between 2014 and mid-2015. I had a 1080p screen, but still poor peak brightness of 200nits and horrible colour reproduction. I was using a Surface Pro 3 at that time for personal use and the screen quality difference was huge. I still use that Surface Pro 3 as a backup device, but decided to gave back the T440p to the company even though I had a good buy back offer - just because of the poor screen. I wished I had accepted the buy back because one of my colleague did it and replaced the screen with a LG 1080p 300 nit decent screen and it looked good.

The 1080p IPS panels for the T440p are pretty good and even if you have one that didn't come with it from the factory it's quite easy to upgrade yourself, at least from what I've heard. The panel on mine is a LG LP140WF1-SPK1 which looks really similar to my desktop PC's main monitor and my phone screen (both of which are also IPS).
My T440p is a quite high spec one (20AN007FMS) so I've only upgraded the RAM from 8GB to 12GB in the 3 years I've had it. Someday I'll probably upgrade it to 16GB and upgrade the SSD to a bigger one.

I was thinking about used T-series but I bought new ThinkPad E495 on sales last year and installed Manjaro Architect there. Yes, E-series is a cheaper ThinkPad than T-series, but it is still rock solid, it has very good keyboard. Also, E495 comes with AMD Ryzen 5 3500U CPU and can be extended with RAM and additional SATA drive.
So, yes, it is not under 300 USD mark, but it cost me under 750 Euro for ThinkPad with Ryzen 5 3500U CPU, 24GB RAM, 256GB M.2 SSD and 500GB SATA SSD.
One more - I am big fan of Track Point. But because T440 has sensor buttons, using Track Point there is really a nightmare. You can buy Touch Pad with mechanical buttons from T450 and install it into the T440. But it is extra effort and money.

My laptop is a Lenovo B50-30 notebook. Released in 2015. Costing just £170! And yet more than 5 1/2 years on, it's capable of running Ubuntu 20.04. The only upgrade that I've made is increasing the RAM from 4GB to 8GB. And removed the dreadful Windows 8 OS. Replacing the latter with Ubuntu. I agree with the screen quality on Lenovo laptops too. It is poor! Oh yeah and I had the wi-fi connectivity issue too! That took a very long time to solve!

Running Kubuntu on a T440 (no P) - and only 4 GB of RAM. Processor i5-4200U. Strangely enough there is only 1 RAM-slot. My son has a T440 bought around the same time as mine - but it's apparently newer. Has 2 RAM-slots and an i5-4300. All in all we are both very happy with our buy. He runs Ubuntu. Only complaint is the Bluetooth-suppport for my headphones. With sound at maximum it is a little to low in volume and the sound falls behind the video with about 1/2 a second. But putting the wire in - everything is OK. So yeah - Lenovo is very recommendable! We bought refurbished PC's. Only other issues was some scratches and the battery only keeps around 60% - but then Kubuntu doesn't drain the battery that hard, so I have easily 4 hours of work without plugging in.

LearnLinuxTV, Innolux N140HCG-GQ2 is supposed to be a great upgrade for the 14" ThinkPads. That TN panel is *horrible*! Also, that trackpad is known as the clunkpad, and you can replace it with that of a T450.
The choice for me was between a T440p and the T450. T440p has a sockeded CPU and can be upgraded with a quadcore, the T450 can be upgraded to 32GB RAM (officially it supports 16). I found a T450 with a i7-5600U and a 240GB ssd for ~$190, so I went with that and picked mine up a couple of days ago.
I've installed Arch+xmonads and doing configs now...had some trouble with iwlwifi not loading, and I managed to enable both NetworkManager and netctl for a nice little conflict, but now I've got the wifi up and running, and now just started on the sound. I've only been using Linux for five months, but I'm learning and have been able to figure things out.
After getting the sound working I'll be spending quite some time editing the xmonad/xmobar configs.
I really like the wm experience so far, and it'll be so nice when I've got it set up just the way I like it :)
As for the hardware, I'll be upgrading the RAM to 32GB, replacing the thermal paste on the CPU, replace the panel for a FHD IPS, as well as giving it a good cleaning, including removing the keyboard to clean out the dust.
Btw, although I like Vim, both i tellij & VS Code are running great :)
And, as mentioned, the keyboard is awesome for being a laptop. I plan on using it for coding when I'm away form home, but I'll ssh to my desktop and let it do the heavy lifting when I need to run something that demands a better CPU...

I'm debating getting a T440p (i5 4300m, 16gb ddr3, 240gb SSD, 1080p IPS screen, 6 cell battery) for the equivalent of about $209 USD. Don't need the dedicated graphics as I would prefer better battery life. Thinking uf the price is fine considering what I see around the same price are base model 5th-6th gen i5 business laptops or upgraded 2nd-3rd gen i5 business laptops.

I'm still using a Lenovo Thinkpad X140e with BodhiLinux (Moksha desktop environment, a fork of the enlightenment 17 desktop environment) and it only has 4GB of RAM but STACER shows that only 3gb is available. There are 2 RAM slots available and only one being occupied, so I ordered 2 to upgrade to 8GB RAM. I already have a 500GB HD, but I am getting another 500GB external drive just for the halibut. I'm also getting a USB-A to USB-C converter, and this is all around $100 with shipping and taxes. I'm doing this because I really like what I already have. I'm not a gamer (though I occasionally play Lux Alliance on STEAM) gameplay is a little sluggish but that and solitaire and maybe an old version of lincity is all I play these days and very rarely at that. The rest of the time is just surfing, social media, watching youtube or rumble etc, pretty basic needs, most of the time. I do miss Distro Hopping though, so maybe with the external HD and extra RAM, I can play with distros a little with virtualbox or something? I'll get a more modern lenovo later on, for now I enjoy trying to keep this thing alive, it's almost good enough right now BEFORE the "upgrades". I'm not expecting much, but every little bit helps. #BudgetLinuxPC

Acer Aspire 5 Slim. Ryzen 3 model is $365 on Amazon. Supports up to 32GB of RAM, has a full HD 15.6 inch IPS display. Room for a 2.5 SATA drive inside and comes with the necessary connector cable and screws. NVMe drive is upgradable. Keyboard is decent, trackpad is fairly large and works well. Design is clean and light, like a MacBook Air. I nabbed the Ryzen 5 version on sale one day for $520. At this point I wouldn’t recommend anyone spend good money on something years old unless it already came with a better screen and cost far less than $300, or was a free gift.

Keyboards on those Lenovos are best laptop keyboards, by far anyway. Even better than Apple's. The only issue I've seen (working on hundreds of T-series Lenovos) would be a select few of the T540P (15" version similar to that laptop) - it used to have some Fan Failures, but everything else on it was perfect.

My only gripe with the T-440? was the fact that the TOUCHPAD was HORRIBLE! That whole "one-huge-surface-with-no-dedicated-buttons was what drove me away! Also, the screen really was a dim miserable mess, but, since I connect all my devices to my 27" IPS Lenovo monitor?...the actual scren is less of an issue for me, but still crap is crap...and this is why I skipped that model and moved on to the T-4350 / T-460 / T-470 and now I'm rockin' a T-480! I think this will be my last ThinkPad, since I still have three T-420's a T-430, plus a Dell XPS 15 (9560) and a Huawei MateBook X Pro. don't need anymore laptops! I'm now looking to either buy or build my own desktop PC, I'm thinking I might go with System76, their mid-sized tower, with an AMD Ryzen 7 and 32GB of RAM. I'm thinking that their quality must be good since a few of the engineers where I work bought a few to get their work done.

    • @iainbell8366
      @iainbell8366 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Companies like to cheap out on the screen to save money when they buy laptops for their employees. That's why Lenovo offered these terrible screens for their base models for a long time. You can usually buy a replacement display for a good price on ebay. That's what I did with my X250. With the T440p you can also replace memory, CPU and SSD AFAIK.

I had a T440 in college and I intentionally bought the model with the worst screen and replaced it with a decent panel (I went glossy and it was beautiful- fight me, purists) That was a really nice laptop once I added the backlit keyboard, maxed the RAM, and added an SSD.

Running Garuda Linux, my first Arch-based daily driver, on a T420. Upgraded RAM to 16GB, added a SSD. Ran elementaryOS, Ubunutu, Arco Linux when the machine was my distro hopper machine. I think I am sticking with Garuda on the T420 for good though. Love using the machine, even if that means not using my XPS 15. If there is a complaint - and this holds true for all the distros I ran on this particular ThinkPad - it is that it gets pretty toasty if I am running video on it for too long. The solution that works best is to downgrade the resolution of the video to 720p or lower, which is fine if you are stuck with the factory screen, but not ideal if you have a second monitor that supports 1080p. Some compromising required there, but like you said, typing is such a pleasant experience on ThinkPads that compromising optimal video performance seems a cost worth paying, at least for me.
