A true historic car. Its a late 60's also because of the big block mated with NON electronic injectors. This was a more extreme fad. Besides the far more common high riser manifolds that everyone "just had to" have at that time. The high risers and the simple hilborn type injectors made most cars, well, "difficult"... on the street. They were most of the time a royal pain. Two of my boyfriends had them. You needed to have high risers to be cool at the time...this was just before Dyers came out with a true streetable 6-71 set up. The Hilborns were far more common in the 1959 to'65 era. But if you had a big block in a rod that weighed like 1500 to 2700 lbs you didn't need much bottom end. Anyway golden memories of cruzin both on the left coast and in the midwest in the days before....well, what you have now...
Really cool to be sure one thing needs to be clear Beatnik culture was not hippie culture, or counter culture of the typical 1960’s that is what makes this more interesting. Surprises are always being uncovered from the original hot rod days.
@@thewriter2549 I think Beatniks evolved into hippies. The Beat philosophy was generally countercultural and antimaterialistic, and stressed the importance of bettering one's inner self over material possessions and that philosophy was carried into hippy culture. When i think of beatnik, i think of a pot smoking hipster doby gillis. Growing up as a kid in the sf bay area, I would ride into san fran with my dad and brother and i swear it was like a freak show. We would laugh and point at all the hippies and their clothes and hair. I wish i had been born earlier, the beatnik generation had more class.
Von Dutch... The "Original" most famous striper on the West Coast...in the Late 50's. '60's and '70's. He was also a car builder too. He built Steve McQueen's 1967 Morris "Mini" Cooper...among many others. Thanks Jerry. Cool video and cool machine!
My friend Dave has Von Dutch's touch, he signwrote my hot rod and didn't ask much. Humble and wise he worked in the sun, stooped in the engine bay it can't have been fun. Fifty years after Kenny had the same idea.
Kenny looked pretty healthy in the pic. Before the wine took over. And that engine!! in a bucket! full flow injection on the street? No wonder it was parked for 50 years, getting someone to spray fuel down the tubes while you crank could get old .RIP Kenny.
The only thing I didn't like about this is it ended too soon! I was only 16 in '69,but so many good memories! I can't remember when they stopped publishing Super Stock & Drag Illustrated, but for me it was one helluva sad day! Please reconsider taking this down Jerry,it's history, & history needs to be remembered!❤
Hey, don't pull it down. Stuff like this is legendary and will grow on people with time. Kinda like the car itself.... you don't get a cult following over night. You can add another video, add more details, and if you have the pix, show the car being built back in the day.
Yes Jerry this is very choppy & wish there were more info but it's a damn good video anyway. Plus the value on that T-Bucket went thru the roof as soon as they found the words Von Dutch on it :-)
Thanks - yes and an even bigger deal was Von Dutch staying in that apartment for 2 weeks. It's like a time capsule. I love those posters on the wall from the 1960s, like the concert advertisement for Peter, Paul and Mary. Easy Rider movie, and more reminded me so much of the 1960s that people never get to see anymore. It's like going back in time to be a college student, I think.
Can't seem to edit my other comment so I'll just ask where you are located. This Von Dutch names sounds familiar so wondering if I know him from my area. (southern CT)
El Paso where Von Dutch, in 1969, showed up to lay down lines. I think he was on the road for a span of time - 10 years? So he might have passed through southern CT, very possible.
@@thewriter2549 … It came to me last night while watching TV. His name was mentioned in an episode of American Pickers. I believe it was a long lost motorcycle restoration of his. I forget exactly where they found it.
@@johngrepo9976 … Found this on the web... Von Dutch is an American multinational apparel brand named after Kenny Howard, a.k.a. "Von Dutch", an American artist and pinstriper of the Kustom Kulture movement. After Howard's death in 1992, his daughters sold the Von Dutch name to Michael Cassel and Robert Vaughn. The clothing brand gained popularity in the US and attracted the attention of celebrities such as Whitney Houston, Madonna, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Lance Pedersen and later Ashton Kutcher and Eric Church.
So, was this a mistake or did you like it? Did you see the paint cans from 1969? The gold leaf is different, and fragile He had two tailgates, and saved back the one with gold leaf because the gold leaf was fragile and chipped off easily in chunks,
Hey Jerry, on a little holiday to the prairies here... to be authentic as possible shouldn't it have the original gate on ? Then perhaps seek out an automotive conservationist to find out the best way to preserve what remains ? Definitely worth saving as much of it as possible i would think... Hope a great summer for you so far !
The ‘23 Ford modified into a T-bucket roadster is a legendary and essential part of hot rodding history. I honestly believe that if a man had enough courage (balls) to avoid being like every other mindless sheep in the flock that installs a common and quiet boring Chevy engine in the Ford chassis, he would have something uniquely original and totally cool. A well prepared Ford 351 Cleveland would weigh less and using the right combination of modern alloy Cleveland heads , would provide substantially more power than a BBC or SBC that’s tired from being flogged to death. If going T-Bucket cool is the plan, then plan on using a superior Cleveland for the ultimate cool. 😎. Now I hear so many whines from the crying fans of flogging a once popular but now a hunk of scrap metal waiting to die a dignified death at the recyclers. The owners are unable to think beyond the simplicity of the same engines built in the same common, boring way. I seriously doubt that anyone will understand the truth in my opinions. Or even acknowledge the proof available from the many TH-cam Dyno videos featuring a superior alternative to the flogged to death

Not the best but I gave it my best. I would like to go back in time to one of those coffee houses where beatniks got up on makeshift stages and recited prose and poetry.
