    Hi Sean! I've watched a lot of reviews for this laptop (most watched youtubers included) and this is BY FAR the best man, thanks 👍... Nicely done...

    Yes fan noise and heat are the Achilles heel of these laptops. I've got a 2021 Legion 5 with 3070, and I set a frame rate cap in the games to give the chip a bit of breathing room, and prop it upside down like a tent when connected to my screen. On the plus side, one of the games I like is Flight Simulator so it kind of blends into the background of the jet noises 😅.

      Seriously, my Rog strix runs like a jet fan.

    • @itchynose6980

      How is the fan sound/heat outside of gaming? Aside from light gaming, I will mostly be using this for office work/plc/low level 2d cad. Might cancel my order if it's as bad as everyone says, dont want any of that within the office

    • @steveco1800
      @steveco1800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@itchynose6980 It's very quiet while browsing the internet and using battery saver mode - the fans generally stay off but will run on a slow speed while watching a video. The fans run frequently in balanced mode, but I find battery saver quick enough for general tasks and it makes a big difference to the run time.
      I don't use CAD, so I can only guess, but imagine it would get the fans going a fair bit. It's only really noisy when under a constant load, especially with the discrete GPU enabled, but engaging vsync to cap the framerate helps quite a lot.

    1.
    Just “raise the bottom” let more air into the machine and you will found cpu&gpu each them reduce 10~15°C or in high usage will have more efficacy
    2.
    You shouldn’t be use “laptop cooler” , cuz that effectiveness actually just like you put two bottle caps under laptop to raise it.
    But the cooler still use your limited power and it will let cpu&gpu become more hungry.
    Unless it has an “independent power supply”.
    There also very many ways let your experience better , like
    “gamer most of the time should limit cpu’s PL1&PL2 and offset voltage”
    “discrete graphics card overclock”.
    “Replace the thermal paste and clean the fan dust”.
    Sorry my bad English,hope it's not too hard to read.
    Just want help you gus.

    Just got mine a couple days ago. I'm loving everything about it. The reviews on BestBuy are mainly complaining about the RAM. 16gb total but 1 is soldered to the motherboard and the other one is not soldered and can be replaced. So I think it has a max of 40gb total RAM. Good luck finding RAM for it now though! I will be upgrading the other empty M.2 slot, so thanks for the link. I'll def. use it! Awesome review BTW!

    • @neugentmf
      @neugentmf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@kevch7249 It doesn't overheat. But it does get hot and the fans do ramp up. But the GPU does not overheat and throttle down. At least mine does not. But like the reviewer said, it does tend to run hot and loud. I still think it is a good price considering what horse power it is rocking, I think a similar laptop from Dell would be about 400 more.

    Absolutely the best review of this gorgeous machine. Thanks for the advice on the fan noise. Quiteness is really something that I value in a laptop as I have had my fair share of loud fans before. Luckily, I am in a position where I can wait a bit before upgrading. If the 2023 Iteration with new GPUs can deliver playable frames at quiet mode, I'm going for it no hesitation.

    Nice!! I would be curious what would happen if you removed one stick of ram and just gamed on the soldered 8GB stick. Since each DDR5 stick runs as dual channel independently, I wonder if it would perform the same as like 4+4GB of DDR4 in dual channel.
    Would be much better to test though if 16GB was soldered to compare it against 8+8 in DDR4, but yeah.

  • @highlanderc
    @highlanderc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The older m16 (which died after a windows update ((2 of them i might add))), would yield about 8 hours of battery life. A couple things:
    Dropbox can't be running - Huge draw. So when in battery I disable it.
    Windows Search must be disabled - No matter the laptop this has been an issue.
    Brightness at a decent level (doesn't have to be that dim) and the laptop would consume around 15mw when doing normal stuff.
    BatteryBar Pro was a good program to monitor consumption. I had to run a few Windows Performance Analyzer logs to figure out the culprit. One time the issue was a Nvidia driver that would consume 30-50mw of power.

    Hi Sean, m16 in my area, right now, only has i7-12700H+RTX3060 version. I'm having a hard time in choosing in between G14 and M16. There're 2 things that I want to know: 1)Some Chinese consumer report that M16's display will show some weird pattern which looks like moiré pattern when it's hot(maybe above 60 or 70 °C). Does yours have the same issue? 2)I just want to play some esports titles on my laptop, use Office and watch videos, could you test the fan noise in these scenarios? Hey Sean, first off, AMAZING review!! super calm, natural, and honest review!! loved it!!
    I have a question. Can it run completely silent on easy tasks? like watching videos, and doing some Indesign layouts for example? For now, I'm running an m1 Macbook air and I love it for its power and silence since it has no fan. But in the long run, I want to switch to a windows machine... But I'm super allergic to fan noise, so I need something powerful, but also with the option to run super quiet and most important with a constant level of noise. SO NOT the random ramping up and stopping fan thing which a lot of Win machines do... Long story short :D can this machine run silently on lighter tasks? Thank you!

      hey AKBERT, I just got mine last weekend, and I used it as my daily work machine. General purpose like watching video and using MS office won't be a problem, the fan acoustics is lower than 30 dBA with discrete GPU enabled( optimised mode on MUX should be more power saving/quiet). But keep in mind that it would always go loud if you turn on the performance mode playing 3A games. And if you play something light weighted, turn silent mode can bring you joy and peace( I played genshin impact in silent mode and the fan noise is acceptable)

    Why would you advertise PCie 3 SSD for a upgrade ? This laptop has PCie 4 capabilities and comes with a 1TB PCie 4. I installed a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro PCie 4 and its blazing fast.

    • @TechWithSean
      @TechWithSean  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For game storage I personally would still do PCIe 3 because of the price. If there’s anything you really need 4 speeds for, you could install it to the boot drive. It’s nice to have the option of using 4.0 as a secondary drive though, so if you want the best of the best go ahead 👍

    • @EdJagla

      @@TechWithSean That's exactly what I did was make the 1TB Samsung PCie 4 SSD my boot drive in slot 1 and put the stock 1TB Micron PCie 4 SSD in slot 2. Best Buy had the Samsung 980 Pro PCie on sale for $145 and IMO it was well worth the extra $45. Now I will say as for me upgrading the DDR5 memory that's not happening until the price drops considerably. I tried finding some for a laptop and nobody seems to have DDR5. I really enjoyed your review keep up the good work.

      Either a 24” 1080p or 27” 1440p IPS monitor with g-sync. You’ll want to use a usb-c to DisplayPort cable because the HDMI on the M15 goes through the integrated graphics.

    • @TechWithSean

      That’s dynamic boost I beleive - it’s pulling unneeded CPU wattage to bump the GPU up to 120w. If you do CPU only benchmarks it goes way higher. It got 13000+ on the time spy cpu score.

    I got one of these 6 months ago and it ran just like it did in this video up until the last couple weeks. CPU temp is still fine but my GPU shoots up to 87 degrees Celsius as soon as I load any game. Doesn’t matter the resolution or graphics quality, just instantly 87c. I can not figure out why and it’s driving me crazy. I have cleaned it 3-4 times I have disabled turbo on cpu to see if that helps temps, I have even replaced the gpu fan to see if that fixed it and no. Nothing I do helps at all. My gpu rarely hits 1000 megahertz bc it’s throttling so bad. I have no clue what the problem is. Only thing I haven’t tried is repasting because I don’t want to expose the liquid metal on the cpu, that stuff scares me. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.

      if you don't need a larger screen on the go, get the G14. More portable, quiet, more battery life and in my opinion more beautiful. Had the same struggle as you, but I still bought my M16 (i9,3070ti,32GB) yesterday. I will sacrifice some noise and battery life for a larger screen for my creator tasks.

      I would say its pretty close I have a 2017 MacBook pro 13in and the only thing I could say is that there's not as much thump (bass). One of the reasons could be because MacBooks lay flat on the table but the M16 when open it lifts the computer up fo air flow so that could be a reason for not as much thump in the bass. Other than that I was surprised about how good it sounds.
