  • To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at www.patreon.com/allinaday. The speaker is David Christian interviewed in 1989 for my TV series on the sixties. He was wounded 7 times, received the Distinguished Service Cross, and worked then as he does today to help Vietnam veterans. He was a green beret and clearly a hero. I appreciated then as I do now his sense of patriotism and honor. I will post several clips from his interview in the coming days. If you like this, please subscribe to see other David Hoffman interviews.

Whatever became of the old vow that America's young people will not be sacrificed in war unless necessary for the defense of the country?

What would be so humble in claiming only Americans in VN would have seen the most combat in the history of the world? How would that be respectful, let alone humble, vis-a-vis the Vietnamese forces? How would that be anything but dishonouring towards the tunnellers and people fighting in the trenches in WW1?
This man is showing off which is even more sad when you try to grasp the level of permanent destruction and annihilation he must have caused in order to obtain that many decorations. Selling out your integrity is already bad enough. Doing so in order to look like a christmas tree is just absurd...

It's no wonder this generation became so cynical. All these videos I watch of yours have one underlying theme and it's all these men had very skewed misconceptions about the war, America and just the world in general prior to going into Vietnam. I'm not saying they are dumb or anything. Many of these guys are clearly brilliant people but the propaganda of the time really had some of these guys believing that they were making a change and that the war would solve all the problems and when they come home it's life as usual. When reality set in and these soldiers realized they were wrong so many became cynical and lost a little bit of caring and innocents. Just listen to this guy. It's almost as if you can hear his soul that has been beaten down. He speaks with a sorta dispair that's hard to explain. Its just something you sense. It's not something I can show you. You have to innately know what I'm talking about.

Agreed. I think ultimately heroes are those who fight to keep anyone from engaging in wars.

This guy looks like an accountant, very mild mannered. Yet, in battle, he became a force of one, constantly disregarding his safety, taking on enemy positions single handed and always looking out for his men. Unbelievable bravery.

Is anyone here able to explain what all these medals represent and how they're earned? I know that he explained a few but I really am curious about the rest. I'm not American and so I really have no idea but if anyone could elaborate for me I'd be extremely grateful.

Great guy, but Vietnam such a waste of time and lives. I say this as a man whose father was in Vietnam and he suffered screaming nightmares and PTSD for the rest of his life. He developed cancer and heart disease after and I wonder if it was exposure to agent orange.

He doesn't talk allot about his own efforts and seems to be more enamored by the people he shared his experiences with. I guess when the experiences are so intense it is those around you at the time who you most resonate with, rather than the event as such. Hard to definitively know without a trial most of us would happily avoid. He seems to be constantly on the verge of tears while recollecting events. Hard to be a hero.

Why isn't David Christian's name on the lips of every history teacher, his story not the subject of a blockbuster movie or a best selling book, at least a documentary? If not for him, for all the vets of that particular war, that seemed to produce no positives for them or the country, only darkness.
