MSG Roy Benavidez speech 1991

**For those who are having trouble understanding, this speech was given, as the title suggests, in 1991. While it is true that Reagan was not president in 1991, that portion of the video is simply the citation and presentation of the MOH to MSG Benavidez which was played to introduce him to the stage prior to the speech.
Notice a few things that should help clarify:
During the citation, the setting is outside. During the speech, it is inside.
During the citation, MSG Benavidez is wearing his full Class A uniform including his beret. During the speech, he is downgraded to a Class B uniform (no jacket) and is not wearing his beret.
During the citation, President Regan is present. During the speech, he is not.
The reason for all of these massive and obvious differences is that the speech was not given in 1981 when Regan was president. It was, again and exactly as stated in the title, given a decade later. In 1991.

I met Roy when I was a security guard at the Holiday Inn BWI. I was doing my usual rounds and checked in with the bartender to see if there were any problem children around. I noticed a man sitting at the far end of the bar and asked "Nick, that guy looks familiar. Who is he?" and Nick answered "Roy... and I finished it by saying "Benavidez". Roy hear this and waived me over. When I stood next to him he said "Son, not to many people know me, how do you know me?" (or something like that) and I replied "I read your book" and he looked stunned and said "You are the first person I have met who has read my book Before meeting me, usually they read it after meeting me" and we laughed. He invited me to drink with him the next night and I sat with two other SF soldiers and listened to them talk. It was great and I am blessed for being in such great company!

What makes me tear up about his speech is that my dad was hospitalized in 1968 at 6 years old after having a tumor removed from his brain. My grandpa was hard on him but made him get up and learn to walk again one little inch at a time😔I wonder if if this man was doing the same thing at the same time. Powerful speech.

7 AK-47 wounds, 37 shrapnel wounds, both arms slashed to the bone with a bayonet, his jaw dislocated and nine teeth knocked out from the butt of a rifle, one lung ruptured and a 7.62x39 bullet literally resting against his heart. 6 hours he'd spent alone on that battlefield, a lonely shepherd holding off ~500 well-armed wolves to protect his 8 wounded brothers. Nobody should have survived that. And yet he did... not even allowing himself the luxury of passing out until he was absolutely sure he'd saved everyone he could.
Sweet jumping Christ. The sheer glory of it. "Bravery" doesn't do it justice; lots of people are brave, Roy Benavidez was The King of Infantrymen. Unbreakable in body and fearless in spirit, his willpower would not let him die until his men were safe. He will rule in Valhalla, where all true warriors go. I wish I had been there to see him pass, as I've never seen an actual Valkyrie and I bet it was impressive. HOO-AH Master Sergeant.

To be honest, I had never heard of him and he was just a regular guy, spoke simply, short sentences, so I started to wonder if he could pull off this guest speaker thing. His first line was “I’m not a professional speaker “, but, as it turned out, he was the best speaker I had ever heard. He was just as in the video but the impact is different when you’re in the same room. During breakfast the next morning he thanked me for the time together and left for the airport.

I watched this for the first time years ago. I was shocked, amazed, inspired at that time. Watching it again, it is still just as amazing what this man did. The courage, bravery and strength he showed in the hospital room, pushing himself every night so he could walk again, then more pushing his body to pass special forces training to become a green beret, then the hell he went through being back in Vietnam that day, it is hard to comprehend that it really happened. Then, after all of that, he is humble instead of self serving, and speaks of love for his brothers in arms, the young kids and staying off drugs, and to his love of this country. God Bless this man and may he rest in peace.

I met MSG Benavidez at our SF reunion just a couple years before his passing. I have never felt so small next to another man in my life. Most cannot believe the pain he lived with on a daily basis and yet found time to always speak to a young soldier, a young man, or a school. This man was excellence beyond reproach I yet to meet a man who gave more.
