I first heard the name Roy Benavidez when I was in a disciplinary boot camp in middle school in the early 2000s I never forgot what I heard. I looked him up years later on TH-cam. I’m going to join the Army this month, in my early 30s. It’s stories like his that motivate me to be better and never quit. God help me.
Join the Marines. Will be the greatest decision you'll ever make. It may feel like the worst decision at times. For the rest of your life, your a Marine. Theres few people in the world that do not respect that.
Roy Benavidez, one of the toughest and bravest of soldiers in our history, was descended from a Mexican American father and a Native American mother. We should take into account how America is made great by the contributions of people from all different backgrounds and ancestry. That's what makes America what it is.
Considering they died before he was an adult, I'd say he was probably great in spite of those two, as opposed to the other way around. I'm not making a racial thing about it, but that's certainly the subtext I got out of that. White, black, green, if your parents die when you're young, you're in for a ride.
@Life's Happy or Trump... While this guy was doing this incredible act, Trump was having his Dr write bullshit about his foot. The foot that was sooooo bad he could not serve, but was able to be on his college tennis team. Not one person named Trump has EVER served in the military. But the Trump family was successfully sued in Court for embellezement of funds they raised for wounded Vets. Hence they can never again be a part of a Charity in NY.
I’ve never heard anything like this in my life… my father in law was a Airborne Ranger and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for a similar scenario, but this man’s experience is on an entirely different level. God bless them all and this video should be made required curriculum in every school across the country. Just amazing…🙏
There’s no sports star, no movie star, and no politician we can’t do without, but we can NOT do without real American hero’s like this gentleman. God Bless.
7 AK-47 wounds, 37 shrapnel wounds, both arms slashed to the bone with a bayonet, his jaw dislocated and nine teeth knocked out from the butt of a rifle, one lung ruptured and a 7.62x39 bullet literally resting against his heart. 6 hours he'd spent alone on that battlefield, a lonely shepherd holding off ~500 well-armed wolves to protect his 8 wounded brothers. Nobody should have survived that. And yet he did... not even allowing himself the luxury of passing out until he was absolutely sure he'd saved everyone he could. Sweet jumping Christ. The sheer glory of it. "Bravery" doesn't do it justice; lots of people are brave, Roy Benavidez was The King of Infantrymen. Unbreakable in body and fearless in spirit, his willpower would not let him die until his men were safe. He will rule in Valhalla, where all true warriors go. I wish I had been there to see him pass, as I've never seen an actual Valkyrie and I bet it was impressive. HOO-AH Master Sergeant.
+Alex Tocqueville A quote from his daughter, Yvette Benavidez: (Much later, after his discharge.) _Sitting in the backseat of their car as a child and, noticing that blood was dripping from the back of her father's head, and mentioning to him that he was bleeding._ *"And he would reach back there and literally pull out a piece of shrapnel that was making its way through his skin. And he would just throw it away; you could hear the click."*

+hfontanez98 I have no idea how you read my comment...but you did it wrong. let me put it easier... the word hero nowadays it's thrown around so easily. It seems all you have to do is join the military and you're instantly a hero, join the fire department, join the police department, you're instantly a hero. THIS man is the definition of a hero.
I had the honor of meeting this man before he passed away. Folks, this man did what Hollywood couldn't mimic. His Medal of Honor write up reads better than any embellished story of war. Roy, where ever you are, this beer is for you.
They had to cut a bunch of heroics out of the life story of the soldier they made hacksaw ridge about I forget his name but Hollywood said they couldn’t put in all the things he did because the audience would think ut was fiction
This man is the embodiment of what it means to be an American. A true leader, took control of the situation and saved 8 men, a true Man who was ready to sacrifice his life for his people and his beliefs. God bless you Sir, wherever you are.
I met this honorable man when he was a guest Speaker at our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration in Japan in the 90s. He was the most humble and genuine man I've ever met. As a member of the council I was privileged to attend a private dinner with him and the other council members. MSG Benavidez visited and spoke to every single person at that dinner, over 20 attendees. Rest In Peace MSG Benavidez, if ever there was an American Hero that deserved a movie be made about his actions in war, this is the man!

There are some people who get awards for just being in the wrong place at the wrong time and rising above and beyond the call of duty. This guy CHOSE to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, injured multiple times, and still managed to accomplish feats no ordinary human being could've possibly done.
True he chose to be there, and he is a true hero certainly one of the greatest. But having seen precarious situations before, I can tell you the folks "at the wrong place at the wrong time" can choose to rise up to the challenge - or not. There is plenty of merit to those who take the challenge.
I don't remember the exact date but in the early 80's I saw this MAN walking down the road in El Campo TX. I stopped and told him it would be My Great Honor to take him where ever he wanted. He almost didn't. Because they thought he would die before the CMH paperwork went through, he was put in for a Silver Star. I found out after he died that he and my Uncle Carlos were friends in the 11th Airborne. He even got a mention in Roy's autobiography. Small world.

After learning of MSgt Benavides' strength and courage, I reluctantly admit that I feel ashamed of myself. Rest well master sergeant. Rest knowing that you made a truly remarkable difference while you were with us and that you still do today. Like me... tonight. I am honored to have worn the uniform of the United States military as you once did sir.
The Medal of Honor is meant for truly exceptional heroes and exceptional leaders of exceptional heroes. Roy was more than exceptional, not in spite of his upbringing but more because of his upbringing. Taught to be a good person by his family and taught himself to have no fear in the face of adversity. He went to boot camp twice, actively turned down an opportunity with the Marines because he wanted to be an Army man, inspired by his personal hero. Everything tried its best to hold him back, but he kept moving forward and proved himself again and again. Not even amnesia could hold him back. Roy is a true legend and a true hero.
The fact that this man was hit with a land mine, then later on shot multiple times and beaten so gruesomely and is still able to stand and walk to receive his Medal of Honor just amazes me
He also got his jaw broken by a rifle butt. His eyes were so bloody he could barely see. And when he got back to base his eyes were swollen and dried shut. The dr said he wouldn't make it and spit in the drs face. Dr changed his mind. This man is pure strength!

What makes me tear up about his speech is that my dad was hospitalized in 1968 at 6 years old after having a tumor removed from his brain. My grandpa was hard on him but made him get up and learn to walk again one little inch at a time😔I wonder if if this man was doing the same thing at the same time. Powerful speech.
The point I would like to make about this gallant man is a reflection on my experience in the military and serving alongside men of MSG Benavidez's ilk. Their extraordinary acts of conspicuous gallantry is one thing, and whilst I would never diminish that, it is the quite incredible humility that truly separates these men from their peers. Every medal recipient I have ever known deflects praise and places it on his fellow comrades, this is a shining example of what this great man is all about. What a wonderful role model he is, not only to those in uniform, but to the youngsters of today. God bless this man.....a patriot and hero if ever I saw one. SALUTE!

What took you so long?
Roy Benavidez, one of the toughest and bravest of soldiers in our history, was descended from a Mexican American father and a Native American mother. We should take into account how America is made great by the contributions of people from all different backgrounds and ancestry. That's what makes America what it is.
It is not about ethnicity, it is about courage.

Everything tried its best to hold him back, but he kept moving forward and proved himself again and again. Not even amnesia could hold him back. Roy is a true legend and a true hero.
If Roy was still alive he'd be fighting for veterans' right to seek outside care.

I have listened to this speech over and over again. He was more than a hero. He represents all that anyone could be in this life. He exemplifies what greatness truly means. To the Benavidez family how proud you should be of the legacy this man has left. May he rest in peace always be remembered.
Has anybody ever wondered how he managed all of that while dragging his two gigantic balls of solid steel?
That's awesome! I know they must've been heavy!
At one point, he plopped those balls of steal out to stop enemy fire while giving them a double middle finger.
Yes yes yes great stuff 👏
Like any other soldier does.over the shoulder

I've never watched this without a significant amount of tears flowing forth. What a hero and I pray there are many more like him out there. Thank you MSG Benavidez.
there isn't enough money in the world to stop you from doing what you did? I say there isn't enough money in the world to repay you for what you've done.
This man is the epitome of a warrior and a legend, a hero. He's an inspiration to myself (USMC) and many many others. This man is why the Medal of Honor is given. True valor in the face of death. Go Bless you sir. Fair winds and following sails.

Fort Benavidez does have a nice ring to it!
I served 21 years and yes, I would. The love for this country to follow in my dad’s footsteps. CSM Benavidez thank you for your service.
This man is a true inspiration for all human being regardless of their race, religion, ethnicity, country... my confidence level 10000000x after I heard his story...
I read his story as a lowly private. Motivated me to be the best Soldier I could, I did 23 years 7 deployments. I never added up to this man.
Thank you for your service. From a grateful American
Trying is all our nation ask of any soldier, and your service is appreciated.
Very few will ever amount to what this man did in one day, and he acts as though he's a simple, common man. Just beautiful.
I’m not sure any soldier will ever add up to this man however he will forever inspire the next generation of American servicemen
@@SpeedyWings2323 every Medal of Honor recipient is cut from the same cloth. MSG Benavidez is just one in a long line of truly great men. 🇺🇸
🇺🇸Thank you John.
Thank you Soldier.
Thank you. 🇺🇸
I want to press the Standing Ovation button!
Facts!!!!!!
Pressing. Pressing

This man is what everyone should strive to be like! Not a damn Pro Football player or some actor or singer.
...
I see your point but that's the reason we have soldiers so are civilians can be civilians
@@Meow22688 he means good honest men who aren't afraid to give up something that's bigger than themselves
95% of men do not have what it takes to be this man. Just facts.
StormCrowYo ... WAY less than that I would say. He was special among the special .
What MSgt Benavides said about “...to us, Veterans, life has a special meaning...” It just hit home. Thank, MSgt Benavides.
Indeed it does my friend

SALUTE!
This Great Soldier stopped at the Main Gate at Fort Campbell, Ky one summer night at about 0300, I just happened to be the MP Duty Officer that day. This Great Soldier talked with me and two other young MPs……I have never been so Honored to be in the presence of such a HERO.
