I use all of my gear for a few months at a minimum. I'm not a big knife guy, so that's mainly why I've only used the Garberg. But definitely expanding my collection!

Have been using this knife for years. I worked with tones of commercial big brands knives and I can tell Mora Garberg carbon is the one that is worth money! Never failed and it's pretty much indestructible. Now I'm using it as my emergency/secondary knife, as my 2 primary knives are customs from the local blacksmith/knife maker. Mora is always attached to my backpack though, so I have an easy access to it. Perfect for a bushcraft and survival beginners but widely used by military professionals as well. Just overall great piece of tool. Good job Sweden!

I have this exact knife and for the price, you can't beat it. I upgraded to a JRE Brown Leather Dangler Sheath with a 3/8" Ferro Rod Loop for $35 online. The K model sheath fits it perfectly for anyone wondering. My previous main field knife was a TOPS Brakimo, which is a great all around knife, I just wanted to try a smaller more nimble knife since I carry a Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian Forest Axe for the heavy tasks. I plan on getting a custom bushcraft knife at some point in the Woodlore style design. 01 tool steel with a scandi grind, etc and the Mora Carbon Garberg is around the same size/grind and much cheaper than a custom. The Brakimo went on my Battle Belt and/or Chest Rig as a combat knife until I get the actual knife I plan to use. I've been subbed to you for a long time, but for some reason I haven't been getting notifications. Good review man, gonna binge on some past videos CensorTube didn't notify me about.

Love the Garberg and Moras in general but lately I have been enjoying Joker knives, especially the Ember Scandi. It is made out of the same 14c28n steel as Garberg stainless and is full tang with micarta grips and a leather sheath. It’s about the same price as the Garberg with the leather sheath as well.

Iv'e been using a mora companion (I believe that's what it is) that I got in 2007, if I remember correctly. I got it at Boulder Outdoor Survival School in Utah when I did a summer of training there. I've cut thousands of things, used it for baton work, and struck fires in multiple ways. I am able to keep it's edge mostly true stropping it on a piece of wood in the field. At US $10 it has been and currently is by far the most cost effective tool I've ever purchased. Despite the rat tail tang and the hard polymer handle, that could have issues, this knife has served me very well. I obviously have to be a bit gentler without the full tang, but that just takes thought and precision. The world isn't all brute force and ignorance after all. The standard plastic sheath I immediately reinforced with a denim wrap before the training, but I don't think it was necessary. In that denim build I made a swivel hanger so that the knife would hang from my hip and swing rather than be rigid on my hip. I usually have it in the outer pouch of my day bag these days. I have little but high praise for this bad boy, though I do plan to upgrade to an Andaltool when the next shipment is produced, as I do want to have a stronger knife, and I figure it's time to invest in something that is even stronger and has other features (fire steel and sharpening stone on the perfectly formed kydex sheath). It will be hard to put away the Mora, but I might leave it at one of my regular camp locations or in the shop, or give it to a kid once... or I might just strap it to my boot!

👍 Very good update. I really appreciate videos on knives where is at least as much cutting as talking.
I believe a convex edge is the best edge for a knife. So, losing a secondary bevel is no loss in my mind. I also use ceramic rods and strops on my knives and hatchets as the main sharpening tools - they work great.
If you use the following products in the order given they will make that sheath look almost new without losing it’s well earned character:
    Lexol Deep Conditioner
    Obenauf’s Heavy Duty LP
    Smith’s Leather Balm
Regarding your question about which knife I prefer, I am very interested in Puukkos and Saami knives from Scandinavia. I am also starting to like Yakutian knives from the Siberian area of Russia.
Again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Mora Garberg.

Great review on an apparently very durable bushcraft knife. As for the sheath, I have been using Obenauf's leather conditioning and leather preservation products on all of my leather goods for over 15 years now. I recently used it on two old(+/-100 year),dry, and crumbling knife sheathes and it brought new life into them after several applications. I'm not affiliated with Obenauf's other than being a very happy and longtime customer.

My way of keeping knives sharp is to use 6,000 and 8,000 grit Emory cloth and a bock of wood , it's just the best way to keep the knife edge bur free and keep sharp, learned that from corpral Shaun Kelly

Great review. The only thing I would add is that I would STRONGLY encourage anyone getting the Garberg to not get the plastic sheath. I know more than one person who has lost theirs because it fell out of the sheath while in the woods - including my battle buddy during Pathfinder Basic! The leather costs more but its worth it.

I do like a good knife video. My setup from big to small starts with Schrade SCHF52 Frontier 13in, then Morakniv Companion Heavy Duty Knife, kershaw 3 1/4 flip blade. I sprayed moly dry lube on all my knives. ATM the frontier needs some serious cleaning. Looks like char coal grim and pitch. However the moly protects the metal from corrosion. The frontier is big and more job specific, the mora. I really love this knife. My kershaw has a thick spine and I use it daily in the oil fields. There are a few good knives out there and I took my time selecting my set. In my opinion the knife in the video looks like a good one.

Hey Paul! I have been using the GB2 Puuko from PKS(no longer available) I also have the Mora Bushcraft Black...great knife, just missing the full tang. While in another class, I used my Mora 2/0 for some finer trap trigger work. It is a small, narrow knife, not suited for all bushcraft tasks, but very good for fine, intricate work. I heard that knife may also be going away. I really like the Garberg carbon. Many of my past class mates carry that knife. Thank you for the review. Good luck with your design! I like the garberg. Also i have the lt wright gen 5. Not sure if they are still making it but they have the gen 6. Also i have a battlehorse knives platoon All 3 great knives. The last 2 are better knives aesthetic wise and are larger and materials wise but the garberg is also my first choice for a top knife under $100 with the leather sheath and it is a beast that will do everything you need. I also have a pathfinder scorpion too but though it is a good knife i think it is really too high a price for basic 1095 steel and its ok but tends to get little rolls or chips easier than the garberg which i think is 1100 steel. The lt wrights are an excellent A2 steel and the big battlehorse is O1. You will pay about $250 for the lt wright and almost $300 for the battlehorse but you also get a great blade steel with micarta handles. Personally the Garberg is my go to knife. I havent been using my other knives yet really.

  • @ndubstar
    @ndubstar 2 ปีที่แล้ว

My choice is scandi grind bar none for woodcraft and it cuts meat good too. Saber would be my choice for a knife that will see more food prep and general use but it is more like a flat grind in terms of woodcraft. It has a secondary bevel so it is not nealy as good for wood. Dead last fo me is the flat grind. Though it works. For a folder though i use a case large sodbuster which is flat. Mostly for kitchen use in the woods but also any general tasks in the garden, slicing apples or mangos and of corse steaks after cooking. It does fine with smaller wood chores like wittling small braches too. But for a belt knife i wouldnt personally choose a flat grind.

I just changed from my Benchmade Bushcrafter to the Mora Garberg Carbon. The Benchmade is a beast but the Garberg is on par performance wise. I've only had my Garberg for six or eight months, the only change I made was a beefier belt loop for the plastic sheath and I put two strips of electrical tape down into the sheath to help improve retention which I thought was a little weak. Glad to see that the Garberg is built to last.
