The relationship between Batman and Poison Ivy is much more interesting than what it seems, being sadly overshadowed by the most popular shippings with Selina and Talia. Ivy, despite being by far the vilest female Batman villain, is perhaps the one who has most openly shown her love for the dark knight, even having altars and posters of him in her Arkham cell. She has actually said several times that the opportunity to meet Batman was her main motivation for becoming a villain, not to mention that she has told the caped crusader everytime he has saved her life that she knows he deep down loves her. In fact, when Bruce was under the effects of Ivy's toxin for months, he felt a genuine pleasure and peace with her, something he actually missed after being released. This episode, especially the final scene, proves how wrong fans are when it comes to saying that Bruce is the luckiest man in the world with women. It's quite sad that Bruce ended up alone despite having enormous success with women because most of his lovers were mentally challenged criminals, some were normal women he couldn't trust his secret to, and the rest were heroines with goals too important to allow them to have a love life with him
He does have quite a lot of women throwing themselves at him, drawn in by either the money or the brooding loner bit. It's just not what he wants. Not after Andrea Beaumont, and not while a legion of psychopaths would cross any line to cause him suffering. He outlined it best in the 'This Little Piggy' episode of Justice League, and though Wonder Woman did have a pretty good response to it even she wouldn't be safe from Joker venom.
Also I actually worked with Loren Lester at a convention recently. Dude clearly still loves playing Robin and I know he'd be more than happy to return if given the chance, though I think he mentioned he'd prefer a strictly Robin or Nightwing project as it wouldn't feel right without Kevin Conroy as Batman.
Batman Beyond had some good episodes. One of my favorites is the one showing Ace (the dog) origin, and how Bruce first found him. As a dog lover, that Ep hit close to home.
"Mask of the Phantasm" earlier presented the idea, that the pain from his parents' deaths were the driving point to his Bat-Crusade, and meeting a One True Love helped soften it, giving him less reason to don the cowl. However, I think that movie and this episode played a strong role in why Bruce ends up bitter and alone by "Beyond".
I wonder if this episode is the reason Bruce could never settle down or be in a relationship with anyone else. His relationship with Diane in Justice League felt like it could work because she was strong, noble, kind and was genuinely interested in him. Yet Bruce after already being burned by Talia and Selina, this moment where he was married to a literal plant might've been the straw that broke the camels back for him.
While I am a big BMWW fan, I feel one reason Bruce let Diana go was her being immortal, and didn't want to put her through the emotional agony of watching him grow old while she didn't.
It is a shame that this episode was poison ivy's last appearance. But I love the relationship between Poison Ivy and Batman as it shows in this. 3:31 Grayson: "He'll have that costume back on in a month." Barbara: "Anyone can change and settle down. Even you." Grayson: "Don't get your hopes up." Barbara: "Oh really. What you and that tamaranian princess." Grayson spit take: "How do you know about that?" Barabara: " I'm the oracle." I do have one question though and that is are you guys going to do the Batman (2004 cartoon) review for the next Bat-may or Batman: the Brave and the Bold?
And it us ashame that we never hear or heard Lauren Lester's Robin/Nightwing voice again (until Videogames and stuffs), but we all would love to see him reprising the role again in DCA films
Part of me wishes that Susan returned in an episode or two. I would've loved to see her survive the sinking ship, and decides to go after Bruce Wayne. What's more is that the idea could've been taken it a step further by exploring Susan's character. For example, if Susan did survive and decides to go after Bruce, is it for revenge because he abandoned her and left her for dead on the sunken ship, or does she still harbor feeling for Bruce, due to what she was bred to do by Poison Ivy and want Bruce all for herself? And then take it a step further by adding Poison Ivy into the mix. Ivy finds out that Susan is still alive and decides to continue with her plan to kill Bruce Wayne and have Susan inherit Wayne's fortune so that her can claim the fortune for herself. This could cause an interesting and conflicting dynamic for Susan, as she, if she did still have feelings for Bruce Wayne, has to choose if she wants to side with Ivy, or be by Bruce's side. Made even worst when Poison Ivy uses are abilities to control plants in an attempt to control Susan. But, for reasons even Ivy can't understand, Susan is showing resistance towards Ivy's control. This would show that she's more than just a plant and more than a puppet for Poison Ivy. And what if, just maybe, Susan discovered that Bruce Wayne is Batman. What would she do? Would she feels betrayed that Bruce kept something important? Become more conflicted that she's married to Poison Ivy's greatest adversary, or would she accept the reveal and promise to keep it the secret, even if means taking it to her grave? Speaking of taking it to the grave, what would become of Susan during all this? In my personal head canon, while Susan did survive the ship sinking, her body received some serious injuries. Her skin is all green, revealing her plant biology, her clothes are tattered and torn, and her body is shown to be falling apart, as she's holding one of her arms, preventing it from fall off completely. With that in mind, would Susan's body begin to fall apart are these hypothetical episodes happen, or would she eventually regenerate? And would she survive at the end of her story arc, or would she die either trying to kill Bruce Wayne/Batman, or sacrificing herself to save him? Needless to say, there's a lot of possible stories that could've happened if Susan survived and returned.
Chemistry, Babydoll, Dick Grayson's quitting Robin, Clayface, mutant cattles, and Mad Love... I think The New Batman Adventure's episodes are much darker than the original TAS's.
3:51 My money would be on Superman or Clark Kent. Him and Bruce are pretty much best friends in Justice League and I legit see them as such. If Bruce did get married I'd imagine he'd ask Clark.
I love the “invasion of the body snatchers-body horror” inspiration for DCAU Poison Ivy, it’s really interesting and a creative approach for the character, I dig it
You know what would had the perfect spin or sequel to this? If one of the plant people was going against Ivy. Heck have Veronica be the one who gets told he is Batman and that triggers something in the plant clone that makes her go against Ivy in secret. Cause you know... the weed whacker we see had to have a reason to exist.. and THAT would been a perfect reason. With Ivy going.. "you aren't the only child of mine to rebel against me..." Eitherway it would heighten the drama.
fun fact. Mask of the phantasm's birth of batman suite plays during the scene where bruce says he will not be batman anymore. As a means of a red herring for the audience to make it seem like he is REALLY going to give it up.
The way Bruce treats his fiancée after finding out she's a Poison Ivy plant is pretty funny. While Tim continued to love Annie even after discovering her mud nature and was devastated by her death, Bruce simply let the plant die in cold blood like: "Meh. I don't wanna anything with something that's not even legally considered alive. I'm already satisfied with Selina and Barbara...", throwing away the wedding ring as if nothing had happened between them🤣🤣🤣🤣
Who should've been Bruces Best Man? The Joker. He could've came in, guns a blazing, offerinf Joker Gas Bombs as party gifta for the guests and say " Brucie! As many times as i held Gotham for ransom, I should be tteated like family❤"😂
Definitely can see the parallels with this episode, House and Garden, and even bringing back the premise of Bruce abandoning the Bat mantles from Mask of the Phantasm. Some definitely good body horror here from the plant people getting slaughtered and Ivy ripping off the skin from one. A great episode.
This episode would really get better with two parter with first part being focused solely on Bruce's and Susan's relationship andhow their love started as something big and ending it on wedding itself. Second part could've be about Dick, Barbara and tim trying figuring out who is Susan and why everything looks so suspiciously perfect with Bruce baing annoyed at them, even angry that they don't trust his feelings to Susan. and then put that ending that was in episode but with more emotions from Bruce. Single tear or even grieving alone in the Batcave looking at their happy photo with Susan.
For being bruce wayne's best man, I 100% think lucius was a recent change, and it was always meant to be Harvey Dent, had the bat actually decided to settle down. What could have been
Considering how they focused on a shot of her face as she sank into the ocean, I think it’s safe to say that you are supposed to feel sorry for her. The plant people are clearly alive and sentient, at least up to a certain point. Kind of like the little girl that Clayface unintentionally made. I sometimes wish this show had been been aimed towards a more mature audience so they could really dive in on the tragedy of these plant people, but hey, what we got was still really good and disturbing.
It's rather telling that _every time_ Bruce falls in love with someone, he immediately decides to give up with the Batman thing. It's happened multiple times in this continuity alone! And then Dick immediately called him out on it and accurately said that he'd be back in no time, because Bruce can't actually leave the job alone. He knows in his very soul that there must always be a Batman, even an idealised dream version of Gotham still has Batman protecting it. It's just that sometimes he wishes it wasn't _him._
That was pretty heroic of Bruce, saving Veronica's life like that. I mean, Going in there without his costume or even his utility belt. He risked his own life for her. He's as brave as any costumed crime fighter of his calibre. Plan or no, fancy equipment or no, he'd never leave a friend or foe behind. He proved that we can get the job done with or without our costumes and gear.
Susan got a few good lines in her dialogue. That quip about garters being unnecessary made me chuckle. Also, she gets in a little dig against Bruce when he snaps that he should have been suspicious about how easy their union was. "Relationships aren't supposed to be easy. I know this and I'm just a vegetable." It's one reason I like this episode so much.
This episode shines a spotlight on the fact that being a depressed, traumatized loner is Batman's defining trait. The moment his brain chemistry is forcibly altered into a well-adjusted, functioning adult, the Bat is gone. The only villain truly capable of defeating the Dark Knight is Xanax Man.
3:44 Actually, the fact that it is Lucius Fox as the best man and not the others you mentioned might be a stealthy clue something is off. That it is the false "Bruce Wane" persona that is being spellbound, not the true "Batman."
Seeing batman being this hilariously odd reminds me of a scene from the mind 2000s "the batman" cartoon where he straight up punches an elderly woman sending her across the room, with ashocked and confused batgirl by his side lol (its in, i think, the first poison ivy episode for that series)
Fantastic Poison Ivy episode! Lots of wonderful drama and a great spooky mystery! One of my favorite episodes from this error! I also give mad respect to Loren Lester! Thank you so much for being our first Robin!
Cursed question: while they obviously couldn't confirm anything on a Saturday morning cartoon, what are the odds that Bruce and Susan...really got to know each other? Pretty sure there's a time skip between saving Veronica and the cruise..
The transition from Bruce to Batman daydreaming of Susan with that smile still makes me laugh every time. I think we can all relate to that feeling when we have that new spark with someone after a long time alone.
I agree that Dick being the best man makes the most sense. However, I'm of a mind that Bruce DID ask Dick to be his best man, but because the latter was bitter about his boss throwing the towel (cowl?) in, he declined. A very strong episode, building on the tragic story that is the Legend of the Dark Knight. I know in the realm of comics, heroes seldom settle down and find "the one" (at least not permanently), but I think the angle of a hero trying to juggle their personal and heroic lives is always entertaining.
This why this show was ahead of its time, as it focused on gritty storylines and giving in this a more deeper dive into Bruce Wayne rather than his Batman alter ego.
I'm going to say it. "Batmay Beyond". I see no reason why this shouldn't be a thing in the future. It's still technically a Batman show and in the same universe too. I know a lot of people are thinking the same thing.
I know BTAS and TNBA were generally episodic, but it feels like a missed opportunity to have this be a multi-parter and for Dick Grayson to be the temporary Batman like he was at one point in the comics.
That whole "What could have been" with Dick and Barbara...Honestly, knowing how long it's been since this series aired....I kinda like Arkhamverse Tim with Barb, and Teen Titans universe Dick with Starfire....Dick and Kori are just much more adorkable together(don't believe me, watch the DCAU movies), but the comics LOVE to screw up relationships just for more issues...It's like "PICK A LANE, BUDDY!" half the time when it comes to the comics
I agree with your choices for "best man", but touching on the ladder half of the video and the fact there were so many cameos, Lucias Fox was an obvious fit. If not just for another cameo.

@@astarteswillum5259 But she was revealed to be in JLU, on the same timeline.
Tim: "Yuck! I hate slow dances"
Barbara: "You might find it useful someday... Then again, maybe not"
Animators: "So what color are Bruce's eyes again?"
"Yes."
I always knew Bruce had some real chemistry with Poison Ivy...
Can you keep doing Bat-May with Batman Beyond episodes!? I'd love to see your takes on Characters like Inque, Max, and Dana
8:52 for me either Lester or Scott Menville from Teen Titans
It is a shame that this episode was poison ivy's last appearance. But I love the relationship between Poison Ivy and Batman as it shows in this.
3:31
Grayson: "He'll have that costume back on in a month."
Barbara: "Anyone can change and settle down. Even you."
Grayson: "Don't get your hopes up."
Barbara: "Oh really. What you and that tamaranian princess."
Grayson spit take: "How do you know about that?"
Barabara: " I'm the oracle."
I do have one question though and that is are you guys going to do the Batman (2004 cartoon) review for the next Bat-may or Batman: the Brave and the Bold?
After the comics showing that TNBA poison ivy wasn’t the real Pamala I wonder what would have happened if Drake threw that orange liquid on her.
This episode had great chemistry
I love how Batman did hang it up in the comics when he married Catwoman to my memory
If you continue Bat May with Batman Beyond call it “Bat May BEYOND”
I agree Kevin Conroy is still wonderful as old man Bruce
I’d love to see Bat May style reviews for the rest of the DCAU and movies.
Ooh...
Bruce looking at pictures of her when he's considering the Lazarus Pit in Batman Beyond would have been a neat throwback, too.
Now that sounds like a great premise for a follow up in the comic going on now!
Susan's banter with Bruce resembled his relationship with Silver St. Cloud in the Bronze Age Batman comics by Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers.
Loved Loren Lester in Rock N Roll High School and his brief appearance in Prayer of the Rollerboys
I don't know why, but the image of Dick chugging a mug of beer makes me laugh. The character has to be over 21 by this point, right?
Yes he had graduated from college
He should be 25 or 26 at this point
"If things seem too perfect*, they probably are."
*unless Paul Dini was behind it
I love the “invasion of the body snatchers-body horror” inspiration for DCAU Poison Ivy, it’s really interesting and a creative approach for the character, I dig it
You know what would had the perfect spin or sequel to this? If one of the plant people was going against Ivy.
Heck have Veronica be the one who gets told he is Batman and that triggers something in the plant clone that makes her go against Ivy in secret.
Cause you know... the weed whacker we see had to have a reason to exist.. and THAT would been a perfect reason. With Ivy going.. "you aren't the only child of mine to rebel against me..."
Eitherway it would heighten the drama.
I knew from the moment the green eyes were recurrent that Ivy was involved...
Ivy’s most diabolical plan yet
We all know Bruce’s best man would be THE best Man, a certain Metropolitan news reporter.
fun fact. Mask of the phantasm's birth of batman suite plays during the scene where bruce says he will not be batman anymore. As a means of a red herring for the audience to make it seem like he is REALLY going to give it up.
"Kiss this!". Tim is really the best Robin.
this is the only episode ive never seen at all, i dont even remember it on tv and i would catch it every Saturday too
The way Bruce treats his fiancée after finding out she's a Poison Ivy plant is pretty funny. While Tim continued to love Annie even after discovering her mud nature and was devastated by her death, Bruce simply let the plant die in cold blood like: "Meh. I don't wanna anything with something that's not even legally considered alive. I'm already satisfied with Selina and Barbara...", throwing away the wedding ring as if nothing had happened between them🤣🤣🤣🤣
We see that smirk Bats...we see it.
"If things seem too perfect, they probably are."
Yay!
My life is ok then!
Man this was a creepy fun episode!
Who should've been Bruces Best Man? The Joker. He could've came in, guns a blazing, offerinf Joker Gas Bombs as party gifta for the guests and say " Brucie! As many times as i held Gotham for ransom, I should be tteated like family❤"😂
Just now realizing that batmay is almost over completely and now im not ready.
2:13 I should’ve known that a long time ago.
I wish they made this two part episode.
I find it real wholesome to see The Bat Family together.
One of the more clever episodes from this show.
For being bruce wayne's best man, I 100% think lucius was a recent change, and it was always meant to be Harvey Dent, had the bat actually decided to settle down. What could have been
Creepy plant people seems to be a running theme with Poison Ivy. Maybe deep down she's lonely.
Also, fun fact: You may recognize Linda Hamilton from the Terminator series.
I don't care if she was a plant lady or not, Bruce Wayne let his wife to die on that ship! That is still pretty damn tragic to me!😮
Considering how they focused on a shot of her face as she sank into the ocean, I think it’s safe to say that you are supposed to feel sorry for her.
I gonna ask a question, will you also cover up the Mask of Phantom and Subzero? Really enjoy all episodes review from my childhood. Awesome!
Nice touch lingering on a shot of Alfred when talking about who should have been Bruce's best man.
Ahh, when Batman’s alter ego gets him into trouble
Poison Ivy: Pucker up. *Tried to kiss Bruce with her Seduction Kiss*
Robin(Tim): Kiss this! *Whacks her with a hose*
That scene never gets old. 😆😂🤣
Dang, I just realized, Bat-May is almost over. Maybe for good.
Don't worry, bat-may will continue in 2024 👍
I like how this episode was focused more on Bruce Wayne than Batman
I agree, this story could've worked as a two-parter.
It's really hard to find someone who's perfect for you.
I know this and I'm just a vegetable." It's one reason I like this episode so much.
i hope they talk about that episode with static shock
This one was amazing in the concept of Bruce TRYING to let himself be happy. I stapled his reluctance to let himself “catch feelings”
Also ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS LET BARB AND BABS BE A THING!!!
I can't believe I forgot about this episode! Also, I agree about Lorn Lester being underrated.
This is a really good episode
Gonna keep suggesting other DCAU themed months, Walter!! Super-May next year, please.
This is the second time Poison Ivy doing outlandish and messed up experimental mad scientist like the previous episode "House and Garden".
3:44
Actually, the fact that it is Lucius Fox as the best man and not the others you mentioned might be a stealthy clue something is off.
@Channel Awesome when will you make a video "Sonic the Movie 2020 - Nostalgia Critic"?
The transition from Bruce to Batman daydreaming of Susan with that smile still makes me laugh every time. I think we can all relate to that feeling when we have that new spark with someone after a long time alone.
Before the show said it was Posin Ivy I thought it was Clayface
I agree that Dick being the best man makes the most sense. However, I'm of a mind that Bruce DID ask Dick to be his best man, but because the latter was bitter about his boss throwing the towel (cowl?) in, he declined.
A very strong episode, building on the tragic story that is the Legend of the Dark Knight. I know in the realm of comics, heroes seldom settle down and find "the one" (at least not permanently), but I think the angle of a hero trying to juggle their personal and heroic lives is always entertaining.
if he never turned, my guess Harvey would be best man, would be humorous if bat-man asked two-face to be Bruce's best-man under circumstances
That thing you said before “see you next time”, I learned that the hard way
Man, I hate that we're getting close to the end of this little retrospective.
100% Alfred or Dick should have been the best man. Dick because he was like a son to Bruce, and Alfred because he was like an uncle to him.
And heck, why not Supermay and Julystice League down the line too?
I know BTAS and TNBA were generally episodic, but it feels like a missed opportunity to have this be a multi-parter and for Dick Grayson to be the temporary Batman like he was at one point in the comics.
This episode had a good plot, but it was way too rushed. Linda Hamilton was great as Bruce's Plant Wife though.
Would've worked as a two parter?
Will you cover subzero, and the Batman, Superman crossover special as a part of bat may
