On Thursday, US Senator for Maryland, Christopher Van Hollen, addressed the Senate floor regarding the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. He urged President Joe Biden to restore funding to the UN aid agency Unrwa after Israel claimed that 14 of its members were involved in the 7 October attacks against Israel.

The Palestinian cause shares similarities with both Ireland and South Africa in terms of historical struggles for self-determination, sovereignty, and equality. During the centuries of English occupation in Ireland, the Irish people experienced a range of discriminatory policies, economic exploitation, cultural suppression, and political oppression. What's needed is intervention, but not from the US; they often exacerbate conflicts rather than resolve them. Instead, a military collaboration agreed upon by both sides to act as a buffer is necessary. Additionally, a two-state solution must be pursued to address the root causes of the conflict. Under the current Israeli government, which leans significantly to the right, it's difficult to envision substantial progress towards peace. As long as this stance persists, the cycle of war and animosity will likely persist, further entrenching tensions in the region. What's urgently needed is a genuine commitment from both sides to foster enduring peace. Such efforts should prioritize the well-being of future generations, transcending immediate political agendas. An important point people forget, or deliberately ignore, is that UNRWA was established in 1949 to provide lifesaving services to the 700K+ Palestinian refugees created by Israel, with a "right of return" clause (Article 11 of Resolution 194, Dec 1948, which was supported by US, Uk, France). This clause was a pre-condition of Israel’s admission to the UN. Israel accepted the clause unconditionally in 1949 and so got admitted. But after gaining admission, Israel started disputing the claim, even though Israel has no say in the matter, being not a member when the resolution was adapted in 1948. This is the central reason why Israel wants UNRWA dissolved. No UNRWA, no right of return, no refugees, so no problem.
