Ashura is a day of commemoration in Islam and holds great significance for Muslims across the world.
It falls on the 10th of Muharram, the first month in the Islamic calendar.
For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a solemn day: it is a day of mourning, commemorating the anniversary of the killing of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, during the Battle of Karbala in October 680 CE.

@@misspollysdolly what they are doing is haram the prophet commanded us to not do it besides most of muslims are sunni it is not fair to judge us by looking at shia because we have many things that we don't agree upon, I don't know your religion but I am sure you wouldn't like to be judged with a thing that you yourself don't believe in.moreover, in shia unlike us sunny they have disagreements among each other for example some of them see that harming themselves is haram while some of them don't think it is haram and some of them think it is ok to curse some of the sahaba (companions of the prophet) while other parts of shia think it is haram so even among them not all of them agree to it. In addition, we sunny people do not see all shia as muslims but the problem is when a non Muslim starts to speak about that subject he puts us in one group with them thinking that all of them are considered muslims but that ain't true. So when you want to see what is islam please look at us sunny muslims. Because, we don't harm our self or curse any of the sahaba or ask help from a dead human which is haram and many other stuff. Oh and don't look at the Suffi people either, because Suffi are three parts: a part of them is normal muslims like us sunny people and a part of them are infidels because of many things one of them that this part thinks for example they can curse god and when you ask them why they will tell you that their mind was not thinking at the moment so they at the moment the cursed they are considered crazy so they are not judged by god which is bull shit and the third group of suffi are the ones that is considerd muslims but do many wrong things like adding words to adhan or dancing while saying allah akber wich is totally wrong.

I'm Shia and I disagree with the self harming part, but only few people do this and not everyone. What we are doing is remembering how the Prophet's family including his grandson was murdered. We sit and listen to Islamic lectures and don't have fun for at least 15 days. What is wrong with this practice? Maybe you dont know about Imam Hussain's death. Search it up.

The ones that stood after Karbala known as Thawabeens were the Shias who were a small minority in Kufa. The remaining Thawabeen then later met forces with Mukhtar and took control of Kufa and killed most of the main commanders of Karbala and those who were involved in Karbala. In reality it was your caliphate system that led to events like Karbala. Just in a few years people like Yazeed become caliph. That's what happens when humans themselves start choosing the representative of Allah!.

I went to Um Habiba, the wife of Prophet, who said, "I heard the Prophets saying, 'It is not legal for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for any dead person for more than three days except for her husband, (for whom she should mourn) for four months and ten days'." Later I went to Zainab bint Jahsh when her brother died; she asked for some scent, and after using it she said, "I am not in need of scent but I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, 'It is not legal for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to mourn for more than three days for any dead person except her husband, (for whom she should mourn) for four months and ten days.' "

Also Mu’awyia bin Hakam al-Sulami said: ‘I was preforming prayers behind Allah’s messenger (pbuh) then a man sneezed, thus I said to him: ‘May Allah’s mercy be upon you’. Thus the people looked at me, then I said to my self: ‘O my, why are you looking at me?’ Then they started striking their thighs, therefore I came to know that they want me to remain silent’”.
The first shows how it’s an act of grief and the second is ur own Sahaba showing the same grief in front of the prophet and the prophet had no comment on it at all
There is also Madarij al Nubuwah, page 221:
“When life was breathed into the spirit of Adam he hit his hand on his head and cried. He made this tradition of beating one’s head with one’s hand and crying in times of trouble for his descendants.”
As u can see in ur own books matam is shown here on many accounts

The complete narration in your Bukhari says that when imam Hussain(a.s) was born, the prophet started crying vehemently. He was asked why he cried so much. He answered that Gibrael had come to him and informed what would happen to Imam Hussain in Karbala.
We are at least crying after the martyrdom, the prophet cried and was saddened even before the martyrdom.

Also, mourning a loss for a woman should not be for longer than 3 days because it is not her husband. This is clear Hadith in Bukhari.

I know about the fitna and its history but not modern shia practice. From what I have heard the majority are just normal Muslims like us and only few extreme groups do self harm and the such.

And so I respect Sunni because they are still good muslims, even if things like the way we stand to pray is different.

It's been used quite a few times in the Qur'an and the Hadith to describe a group of followers and in this context Imam Ali (a) as well. What we are doing is remembering how the Prophet's family including his grandson was murdered. We sit and listen to Islamic lectures and don't have fun for at least 15 days.
