Fix a leaking Geberit toilet flush valve

  • All the toilets in our 5 year old house have been leaking for a while now. The Geberit cistern flush valve is letting water leak past into the bowl. We've also noticed a marked increase in our water usage.
Have removed each Geberit valve and found that in all three of the silicone (?) washers were covered in pimple like bumps. Water trapped in pockets under the first layer of the washers.
Ideally these would be replaced, however I've found a way to easily and quickly fix them.
    - Update -
Have had a few water bills now and found:
Prior to the fix our water usage was 450 L / Day
After the fix our water usage was less than 150 L / Day
That's 3 toilets all suffering the same problem and resulting in a huge waste of water. Our water usage dropped by 1/3!

Spot on fixed the problem. On a broader note isn’t it interesting how flush technology has gone backwards as we used to have toilet cisterns at height that used the force of gravity to enhance the flush and a simple ball and cook mechanism that anyone could fix and an outlet where we couldn’t pretend there wasn’t a problem. Now with “water saving” advancements we have toilets where you need to flush a couple of times (no force of gravity) and where leaks go down the basin so you never get round to fixing it and over engineered German plastic Heath Robinson concoctions that you need to go on TH-cam to find out how to fix. 80,000s views so far, so probably a common fault - German/Swiss engineering is not what it was once!

Yes I think a lot of people are having problems with this flush mechanism. Totally agree with you they completely failed at the new water saving mechanism. It saves water compared to the old syphoning system for the first 2 years but then leaks and uses much more water for the next 5 until the owners figure out how to replace / pop the blisters on the washer.

Legend! Have two of these units in our house that are about six years old and actually replaced the flushing units in both to sort the issue three years ago when it first started and at the recommendation of a plumber... not a particularly cheap exercise. One started again just recently so found your video... voila, sorted in 3 minutes! And not gonna lie, found the 'pimple popping' aspect kind of satisfying ;) Big thanks!

Another thankful person here ... same make of flush, probably about 5 or 6 years old, same problem. My cistern is a built-in unit, so had to access it all via the (thankfully large and easily removable) button system, but essentially the same solution. Thank you!

I had the same problem - intermitant noise, which I thought was the seal on the shut-off valve. But I replaced that and it continued to leak. Thanks to your video I've now realised it was the bottom seal (NZ$10 at Mega). And yes, my toilet was installed in 2019, meaning that it is also now 5 years old. Same blistering on the seal (under side). IMHO this is the best video on the Internet about this issue. Well done!
BTW looks like this problem is universal with Geberit, judging by the comments from all over.

Hi. I have a Geberit concealed cistern. It has been leaking into the toilet bowl for a few months now but has recently got worse so I decided enough was enough. Having dismantled it (with the help of TH-cam) I initially thought it was the fill valve type 380 , lateral flow water supply connection and have just ordered a new fill valve unit. However on watching your video I thought - maybe it is the flush? On close inspection I too noticed a large blip in the large silicone washer . I thought this was part of the system. However I have pricked the blips and water shot out. There was some swelling around the rim. I didn't realise that these rings are made of several layers and water can get in over time. The cistern no longer leaks! - thankyou for this very helpful video. I may buy a new flush washer in the future but for the moment it is working perfectly.

Mate, thank you so much for this video, I didn’t have the confidence to understand how that contraption came out! But this was exact the same problem with mine, fixed in less than 5 minutes. We’ve got 3 of the same toilets in our house. All started going wrong after 4 years. Loads of bubbles on the washer. Now fixed. Thanks 🙏

I took a slightly different approach: although at first I popped all the "blisters" as you recommended, in the end I noticed that the blisters were only on one side, and so I mounted the silicone seal back on upside-down (actually, it doesn't seem to have an "up" or a "down" side, really). It's fixed!
    Cheers,
    M.

Thanks, in my case I noticed a couple of small water pockets but this was enough to cause a very time consuming and fair amount of effort into finding why the inlet was occasionally dripping. No water noticed in the bowl but then noticed the water level wasn't always the same when flushing (I used gaffer tape to mark the baseline cistern refill level). I burst these two water pockets but then reversed the seal too. I've ordered some replacement seals for just over £2 each. Plumbers can apparently charge £45 to fix this leak.

For years literally I’ve been looking at how the plumber fitted the the flushing module alongside the water inlet part, wondering why the flushing module would get stuck agains the water inlet part requiring me to press the flush multiple times to unstick it. and it’s as simple as Pressing two clips, rotating the flushing module till it didn’t touch the other mechanism and clipping it back in. I feel like such a dick for thinking I needed to pull the whole cistern out to fix it. I also found I need to replace the inlet water valve! My mind is now at ease because of this video!

Genius! And with the ease of disassembly you'd almost say that geberit designed it to be so easily maintained? Has anyone tried turning the seal over? Though I've popped the two big blisters on the top and a small one on the underside, there is a slight concave dish across the diameter of the silicone seal and I wonder if flipping it over will help.

AWESOME, thank you so much for the 'pimple' trick, I had two pimples on the seal which is up to 11 years old (possibly shorter but that's unknown, although possibly a date stamp on my 260 model '130428' so 2013 would be about right for when the toilet was installed new). This solved the dripping instantly. Gave the 260 flushing unit a good clean too as it was all a bit mungy black. I see replacement seals are now available on ebay, not needed as yet but maybe in the future. This video saved me £££s or at least a complete new assembly at around £50 and so much time. I've got another in the house so am well prepared. Cheers again fella.

I used google translate on your comment.
WIth respect to "the gasket on the new toilet can be used for about 7-8 years"
Our toilets all sarted leaking after about 4 years. So around 1/2 the lifetime you stated. Next time around I'll see if I can source some replacement washers, but so far bursting the blisters has solved the leak. Perhaps when the washers get to their 7-8 year mark I'll replace them then.

Yes the short lifespan of these washers is concerning. My suspicion is that the mechanism allows the valve to close very quickly part way through the flush which (my suspicion is) causes cavitation, which punches a small hole in the skin of the silicon forcing a small amount of water in. The silicon then springs back sealing up the hole. This is pure conjecture however.

jwelliottnz I managed to get a replacement seal from Geberit in Illinois years ago. My unit is in-wall tank, very awkward to access. They admitted to the problem but made no mention of these pimples. Hey will probably mainly it for free. Otherwise a class action lawsuit may be worth exploring just for the seal. I like your popping solution. It is an issue with unstable silicone chemistry. Silicone roof coatings are encountering similar degrading of material and performance. .

@@timothydobson4657 Interesting, thanks for the information. Hadn't realised that Geberit acknowledged the issue, though am not surprised by this given the amount of traffic this video has gotten. Roof coatings are suffering too? That sounds like a much harder problem to fix, my cavitation theory is probably wrong then.

Excellent stuff - I'd found the dimples but thought they were a design feature as mine were equally spaced. Popping the bubbles didn't fix the issue for me, there was still slight leakage, but a replacement washer from ebay is £2.30, so replacing seems like a better idea in anything beyond the very short-term anyway.
