This is my favorite Aretha song For The Memories too I was white and living in California too but I sang white soul and I sang it quite well and this is one of the songs that taught me how to sing along I was only 12 or 13 when I first heard it in 1970 had to tape it off the radio of course no money for even a 45. My dad played in the big bands in the 40s and 50s so he taught me how to really appreciate this music the big band sound that she has here in the background really great the rolling piano gospel sound also so great can't sing as good as I used to at 65 but oh I still try love it.

From the early years ,songs like Skylark , One Step Ahead, Evil Gal Blues, Dr Feel Good, Share Your Love with Me, Going Down Slow, Spirit in the Dark, Call Me, Amazing Grace, With Pen in Hand , Mr DJ, etc to later songs like Jumping Jack Flash, Another Night , Jimmy Lee , Who`s Zooming Who , I Had a Dream, Pride, A Deeper Love`, Willing to Forgive` , etc , were songs she did in chest voice over the course of her recording career.... When she started using head voice , you can hear the difference when you listen to songs like A Rose is Still a Rose and onwards and even more on the So damn Happy cd .
I think even if mariah had her song cover...there's nothing to compare about the way how the song being sang coz for me it's still the original melody of the song should be heard and how the song brought meaning and connection to our lives..
