Hi, John, thanks for taking the time to present this in so much detail. As a new 380SL owner, I am aware of this issue. My local shop of 20+ years inspected but they didn't see anything and I am eager to get my vehicle up on a lift for my own inspection using brake cleaner and a small brush. The weld you did looks great and I like the cross member idea.
Thank you Ronald. I'm happy I did it, though the 380 didn't suffer from failure any where near as much as the other models it's cheap insurance. A subframe drop and replacement is expensive.. I hope you enjoy your 380. Mine is in for a new top at the moment, then I'll be putting it up for sale. There will be a very detailed video coming soon. Cheers John.
@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 Thanks for the reply. As a member of Benz World, I have been soaking up info like a sponge. One of the members is a retired aircraft mechanic, he also added the reinforcements to his 380SL. He told me to just order them, find a muffler shop, and get it done. You are right, it is cheap insurance. I am ordering them today. Next week when I take my car in for a small rust evaluation (issues after removing the horrible aftermarket fender trim which disturbed the original side moulding trim near the front fender.
Appreciate your attitude towards this. Ensuring that the car is safe before passing it on is most commendable. I think it's ridiculous that Mercedes pretended the 380SL would not be affected by this issue because of a lighter block.
I wish I was the buyer of this car, you've done a good job and it shows how much you love the marque.
Thank you. I appreciate you comments. A few more small things to sort out and it will be ready for sale. Cheers John.
Excellent job John.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers John.

Another great video. You make it look real easy…
Thank you. It was pretty straight forward, just have to make sure metal is really clean to make a good weld. Cheers John.
Looks nice & strong. Should last for years.
Yes. It came out nice and solid. Cheers John.
