    I agree expanding audio is best. I tend to double click on the waveform portion to expand them.

    Great video, Dylan! Can you make a video explaining your story and background about how you came to be so knowledgeable and skilled as the Final Cut Bro? Did you go to school for it? Years of experience? Would love to hear as a subscriber. Good job!

    Excellent video and your "Open Clip" tip was something I never even knew about. I typically record my talking head bits using OBS on my PC with multiple audio tracks (CamLink 4K, boom mic through Rodecaster Pro, desktop audio if needed) and then import the MP4 file into Final Cut Pro on my Mac. Always deal with syncing issues between scratch recordings on camera and the boom mic, and prefer to adjust sync in post instead of in OBS. I don't want to go through my workflow from before, but this literally fixes the issue in seconds vs. my old method. Thank you so much for that!

    This is the best j and l tutorial I’ve seen and the others I’ve watched still left me confused.. I actually gave up on trying to make them, but this tutorial helps so much!
    Now for the question… at 2:28, you have two overlapping clips.. does that mean this is nondestructive to any of the audio? If so, a person would want to adjust the volume in portions where there is significant audio on both tracks. I saw that your waveform shows little to no conflicting overlapping audio, so no need to adjust audio levels in this case.
    Am I correct in noticing this?

      I think it just comes from needing to do a specific task, and not seeing the other options available. But even more frequently, I think it comes from working with Premiere!

    So I found a shortcut to the expand audio and it’s so good.
    All I do is bring my cursor over the clip, make sure I’m closer to audio waveform (so the bottom half) and just double click. Want to collapse it? Double click on the waveform again!
    Boom, expanded audio. Realized this by accident a few months ago and was immediately outside shaking my fist yelling at the clouds asking Apple why they don’t just show us these things 😭😂

  • @dbelden
    @dbelden ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for this, Dylan! I just wish FCP would let me create keyboard shortcuts for J and L cuts. So you’d select the edit point, hit your “J” shortcut, and it might apply a 1-second overlap and also expand the audio so you could customize. A boy can dream.

    • @TechMixr
      @TechMixr ปีที่แล้ว

      I explained in a comment just after yours, if you mouse over the clip but make sure you’re closer to the waveform (bottom half) and just double click, it will expand audio. I thought the same thing for a while but it’s been game changing doing it this way.
      Hope this helps!

    • @TheFinalCutBro
      @TheFinalCutBro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What would be super nice! They did add the audio crossfade. Maybe an auto J or L cut can happen someday too. I’d be curious if this could be accomplished with macros using something like a loupe deck. Might be worth exploring!

    • @dbelden
      @dbelden ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechMixr For me, this just opens the full transition itself (often handy) but doesn’t expand the audio like CTRL-S.

    • @TechMixr
      @TechMixr ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dbelden click on the bottom half of the clip. It’ll expand exactly as expand audio does. You have to be pretty specific, but once you do it a few times you’ll get the hang of it

    hello Dylan I would like to update os sonoma has anyone encountered problems with final cut and various plugins thank you

    • @TheFinalCutBro
      @TheFinalCutBro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t even had time to update as I’ve been traveling a ton! That said, it’s generally safest to wait until a .1 update is released for OS’s before updating. You’ll also want to wait for plugin developers to be able to update their plugins. So if you’re not in desperate need of Sonoma’s features, it might be worth holding off a couple more weeks.

    Audio is the Achilles’ heel of the magnetic timeline in my experience.

    • @TheFinalCutBro
      @TheFinalCutBro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I could definitely see some seeing it that way! I actually quite enjoy working with audio in FCP compared to something like Resolve or Premiere. But that’s obviously personal preference! Appreciate you watching!

  • @mtamech535
    @mtamech535 ปีที่แล้ว

    I actually detach my audio so much that I changed my Z key to detaching audio. Running a 'howto' channel, I do a lot of ew ee's and uh uh's when the camera is not on my face. My timeline looks crazy because my audio all looks close to each other so that there's no blank spaces. I'll even speed up parts and add my speaking voice over so that people aren't watching mundane tasks in normal speed.
    So, I've gotta disagree a little with you, Dylan. In my line of work, detaching the audio and cutting out blanks spots as well as overwriting mistakes that I made is what keeps viewers engage and my sanity in check. Otherwise, you'd a million cuts in my video with my hands jitterying all over the screen. It just streamlines it. Now when I narrate with my face in front of the camera, I'll definitely use this.

    • @TheFinalCutBro
      @TheFinalCutBro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve definitely been there! When you expand your audio, you can use the range selection tool on just your audio and delete specific parts, while still keeping everything attached! But I make those exact same edits that you described, while still doing the expand audio method. But in the end, really it just comes down to whatever helps you edit the best, and there’s definitely going to be many places where you need to edit in a different way because not every single video is the same.
      Appreciate you sharing your workflow! 👊

    Why not just select all and automatically Apply Audio Fades in one shot?

    • @TheFinalCutBro
      @TheFinalCutBro  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An audio crossfade is different than a J or L cut. While you can fade the audio with a J or L cut, these two cuts are primarily used to introduce audio before the visuals kick in. I’d definitely watch that linked video in the description to learn more about them!
