Rewatched this with a friend over the internet during quarantine last year on Halloween. Had forgotten that the movie itself is set on Halloween and that the bad guys evil plot involves what is in effect a super virus. Needless to say all that made the "are you living in the real world?" Question at the end if the movie hit pretty hard. Such a surreal experience, especially given how much quarantine had messed with my sense of time by that point.
This is literally the only add-on movie to a series I've ever seen that actually feels like it works. And not only does it work, it's one my favorite anime movies ever and I think it makes the show better if you choose to consider it a part of the series.
I LOVE how everyone does their own thing. If you noticed, the main trio have ALL saved each other [ from shootouts or space fights ] But they have NEVER requested help or asked anyone to tag along with them. They PREFER to do it alone, even though someone may intervene and save them later. I love their hyper independence from being abandoned or lacking a brotherhood or family growing up.
When I first watched cowboy bebop I was frustrated on why Spike had to leave everything he had with the crew for something that had happened in the past. But now I understand that when he “died” the first time it was him leaving a life he really wanted but out of fear he ran away from it. This first life he left made the memories and adventures he had with the crew (as the show put it) a dream, not reality, meaningless. In order for him to make the time spent on the Bebop have meaning he had to face his past connecting both the “dream” and his “first life” into one. “I’m not going there to die. I’m going there to see if I really am alive” - Spike Spiegel.
I think you hit the nail on the head. I would add, that after Vicious is dead, before Spike dies, he finally achieves the perspective that the shaman talked about. "Open the [blue] eye of truth. There is nothing to fear." I think being free from the weight of his past meant that Spike could finally see himself and his life for what it was, accept that he loved the Bebop and everyone on it, and it was his time to go. I think he therefore avoids Gren's fate, which was to be spiritually trapped ("A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm which awaits us all"). Spike is free.
I will forever die on the hill that the movie should be watched after you finish the show. It’s such an amazing pallet cleanser after how the anime ended . It was like the animators/writers acknowledging that “yes we know these characters mean the world to you so don’t worry they will ALWAYS be with you in one way or another”. I know watanabe hasn’t expressed plans to do any more with bebop but god damn if there was ever an ip from Japan that deserves more it’s this one. It wouldn’t even have to be a continuation or anything either, there are endless stories they could tell about pre anime and during the anime that we just never got to see. It’s the goat and I would die on that hill as well…….
Yeah I think you're missing one of the core messages of the show: things end, we have to accept it. The show did what it set out to do, it's not meant to just keep going.
This movie was my introduction to Cowboy Bebop as a kid and it holds a dear place in my heart for it. Rewatching it as an adult now it really does feel the perfect companion piece to the show.
I’m glad you made this video because all people usually focus on is the series and the movie gets overlooked despite it being really good, the scene where Vincent is describing his past is amazing, my only real critiques of it would be that the weird attempted rape scene felt very uncharacteristic of Vincent and generally unnecessary, and that some of the best songs from the films soundtrack didn’t make it into the final product
Vincent was utterly broken. You justify mass murder but rape is not ok? In case, hims saving Faye could be perceived as uncharacteristic, but then again she is the type of woman the only person he ever loved and made his life "real" is, so it makes sense.
During a rewatch I might watch the movie right before the episode where Faye, Ed, and Ein leave cause I feel like that makes the most sense canonically
the series will always be a classic with the weight and meaning the finale provided seeing this is like calling the band to the stage for an encore, and they obliged plus it can introduce everyone to the series
I just want to point out, because it's pretty cool, the utterly failed and largely reviled live action remake may have done good for Cowboy Bebop just by putting the spotlight on it again. So many new videos describing the greatness of the original, while analyzing the failures of it's Live action counterpart, and the entire trend of putting representation and appeasement over narrative or character building. Cowboy Bebop has had a slew of videos, unrelated to the LA on top of so many pointing out why the original was so great in such palpable terms even people who didn't "get it" might actually get it.
The messaging and tones presented within the show, are incredible, and the movie only serves to further such themes, which is honestly my favourite part of cowboy bebop
I watched this movie on tubi and it was on the same level of amazing as the anime series and yes I watched the cowboy bebop anime on Netflix and it was amazing.
Back then, I really wasn't into Cowboy Bebop like everyone else until I think it was in 2002, Toonami debuted this movie on TV for the first time. They made a big deal of it for over a week and claiming minimum commercial breaks, so I said what the hell! Sure enough, I was impressed. It hadone hell of a story line. There was no wild DBZ-like stuff that defies all logic but was jammed packed with action with even the scenes outside the fights kept me watching. Thats how good this movie was. This was indeed a masterpiece. There was no way they could of topped this movie with another installment and if they do, I believe they could. It took a lot of genius to create this movie.
If you got into it in 2002 then you weren’t far behind , it originally aired in 2001 in America . Also toonami didn’t air the movie first adult swim did .
I'm not sure I can agree that Spike has anything he needs to "learn" about himself. I've heard it elsewhere very persuasively put that Cowboy Bebop is a show with no character development. The characters don't change but instead only deal with past situations that are haunting them. Now, maybe that IS character development - especially in the case of Faye who experiences a radical shift in her personal at the end - but with some open-mindedness I think the point can be seen. Spike never really changes. I don't think his arch is personal growth or self-realization. It's simply that's he's trapped between a rock and a hard place of his past and present. He can't live fully in the present because his past hangs over him, but he physically CAN'T deal with his past because Julia is in hiding and the syndicate isn't something you simply waltz into to assassinate Vicious on a whim... until it is, at the very end, when he's lost Julia and he's really ready to risk everything to put an end to things - and he does lose everything. But if he'd done that first, then he would have died and never found Julia again. People say that Spike is running from his past... When? When he literally runs away from the Bebop, without backup, multiple times, into stacked odds to face Vicious or find Julia? To me, he isn't lost or running. He's just trapped "in an endless nightmare" as he says in one of the episode previews. Now, I mean, I guess you could argue that he should have concentrated on assassinating Vicious early on so he could be with Julia, but, if he had, wouldn't the syndicate come after him for revenge?
I so want to watch this movie. I watched cowboy bebop for this first time last year. And I’m just about the biggest fan of this show. But I can’t but the movie officially ANYWHERE! And everywhere I look people are talking about. Does everyone have a copy of the is movie but me?!

A bad retcon for me would be if these details hurt spikes journey or added a layer that was unnecessary. But me being able to recognize a retcon was made doesn’t really bother me. Even though most of the times he wins by sheer luck lol But I could see how it might for you.
It'd be one thing if Vincent played a huge role in the Bebop crew's lives, but it's different.
