There is something about the song "Real Folk Blues" that really twangs on my heartstrings. From the first time I heard it all the way up until today. It has that kind of melancholic anemoia that few musical pieces are able to carry. I was 16 when i first saw Bebop, and that song has stuck with me since. I remember when it first came to adult swim I told my mom I was staying up for this show not realizing it came on @12 and had school the next day boy I'm glad I did I witnessed history still till this day my favorite anime and it wasnt even my first anime
Wow, amazing video sir. Bebop is defiantly top tier anime. It's animation alone still holds up today. Much like Akira. Rurouni Kenshin and Cowboy Bebop are what helped solidify my love for the genre. I do watch it at least once a year myself. As I've grown as a person. I've also grown to love the Jazz genre of music. Again, with the help of Bebop. The soundtrack is just, AMAZING!!! I have all the OST's on Spotify. One of these days I will get a Pembroke Welsh Corgi. And yes, he will be named Einstein! I am very much a firm believer that this is a much watch for beginners into the fray of anime. It's essential to watch to see that anime is not just some hokey cartoons for geeks. It's a heavy mixture of Eastern and Western cultures. So much deep themes. Now the Netflix version.....haha.
It's insane how Bebop aired 25 years ago and after decades of seeing anime and seeing quite a good number of masterpieces, I can't think of a single one that can top it. It could be a bit of nostalgia but even after trying to analise it objectively, I still think I haven`t seen a piece of art that trascends it's own medium like Bebop did for anime with many layers of complexity and with so much style.
Fun fact: Did you know theres an original pencil drawing of Spike in the CN headquarters stairwell? Did you know an intern drew a Calarts doodle with a sharpie over it? Look it up, I'm not making this up. Search something like "spike drawing in cartoon network", it'll be the first result
Given this isn't your favorite, you did an absolutely awesome analysis and told the story of Bebop in a way that had me on the edge of my seat. Banger as always my guy 🌵👍
I have never seen all of this information on the history that MADE his so popular be put so well. Thanks for a fantastic video essay! Hope I can get my pacing for the longer projects to flow as well as your work...See You Space Cowboy
I love cowboy bebop. Rewatched it last year in both sub and dub and bought it physically on Blu-ray. Remember watching on adult swim as a kid and liked it then but appreciated it more as an adult. Also it was nice surprise that Grant was in this video! Brings me back to the old bonsai pop days. 😊
"I don't watch anime but I've seen Cowboy Beebop and I liked it." That was my brother. He never got into anime with me but he at least didn't bad mouth it. And the fact that it was constantly playing on Adult Swim meant I always had something to watch if nothing else.
Thanks for talking about the history of the luck needed for Cowboy Bebop to become such a hit. I wasn't aware of all the details. Cowboy Bebop may not be my favorite anime, but it sure is one of the most unique anime ever made.
This is my favorite video from you guys in a while. Not only do I love the anime but the "Story You Never Knew" format was great and highly informative. It was fun to hear some familiar voices playing guest roles too!
I bought all of the bebop soundtrack cds back in the day. They were all amazing. That being said, what made bebop stand out was how it fused the elements that you mentioned. Yes, Noir, western, action and sci fi had all been done, but it had not been done TOGETHER. Bebop was a fusion of multiple genres interwoven with a jazz type sound. It is the same formula watanabe used for samurai champloo. That fusion was something that hadn't been seen before, and we all loved it. I didn't watch evangelion until several years after i saw bebop.
Goddammit, I've seen this show through three times and I swore I was done. Now I kinda wanna watch it again in hopes that maybe THIS TIME it'll click for me. You are too powerful.
The story that needed to be told about the series that needed to be made. Such passion from the creators, VA, distributors to make and share this iconic piece of art. LOVE IT
When a reviewer is so incredibly talented as a wordsmith that you can listen to his videos without watching the visuals but still get the entire picture of the episode in question.. that's this channel.
This is so interesting and it explains why it’s kinda forgotten in Japan except for anime historians, but so popular over here. It’s like Evangelion of the west. It’s definitely one of my favorites, and it’s so cool that it was playing for years. I honestly just think that Cowboy Bebop is just good television, anime or not. Also it’s not a seinen.
Thank you bonsai pop. Bebop will probably be relevant a century from now, cant say the same thing for alot of media out there. Truly a timeless classic, and what memories. Grew up watching this with my brother late at night, good times.
I wished I heard someone say "I don't watch anime, but I've seen Cowboy Bebop". Here in Uruguay it's treated like a cult classic or an obscure fine aged wine.
Amazing show, i got the space cowboy pistol "Jericho" and its actually an amazing pistol...fun little fact, Spike has the hand size of a 6ft tall 200lb man 😂
I made a video about Spike Spiegel's origins. I created my channel just a month back, so it would be great if you could watch it and share your feedback. Thanks, and sorry for spamming.
I caught it halfway through it's first run in 2001 and that was all I needed. And then Adult Swim strates their anime block on Saturdays and I got to see so many more cool series. It's a perfect starter anime because it's both very good and also very easy to watch since it's such a short series.
In high school on multiple days my brother and I wouldn't go to sleep until like 1 or 2 am. It was easy as our parents didn't get home from work until right after the AS Toonami block ended. Even my mom fell in love with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
I live in Germany and here it first aired on MTV!!! Yes, MTV Germany had an Anime Section! And Cowboy bebop just BLASTED me away back then! I also recommened the Cowboy Bebop Movie :-)
Watching this in the middle of like my 25th time watching bebop. Nowhere near a favorite but just a fun ride. It seems every time i watch it i have a new perspective on characters and a different understanding.
What coincidence that this video is the first to come up on my feed just right after I unboxed and display my Cowboy Bebop figures. It is one of my all time favorite anime that I grew up watching as a 90s kid and still watch it like once a year. A true classic and a masterpiece that will live on in the ages to come.
What I hear you saying is: 1. It was just (barely) commercial enough to get greenlit. 2. It was noncommercial enough to be left alone by upper management since they never had that much faith in it to begin with. 3. It was good enough to inspire the lower management types most directly involved with it (the animation studio, Bandai Visual, the dub company, Cartoon Network) to make it the best possible show it could be, and promote it in the best possible, practical way it could get an audience. 4. It was really that good.
I saw it as an angsty teen during its first or second run on adult swim. Those rainy nights, staying up way too late, the melancholy - it felt like it was made for me. Cowboy Bebop helped in some part to shape who I am today.
Like others, I discovered "Cowboy Bebop" on Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" just after the turn of the century. From the first notes of Yoko Kanno's "Tank!," I was hooked for 26 sessions. Halfway through the series, I went looking for a DVD set. I ended up at Bandai's website and the following message: "We have no plans to make 'Cowboy Bebop' DVDs any time soon." This was just before Manga took over whole sections of bookstores. An eBay search yielded a bootleg set in Malaysia, and I had a less-then-perfect DVD set. I've considered getting an official Bandai set, but I still watch this bootleg set from time to time.;)
Bebop is one of the few pieces of media (no matter the format) that is flawless. It’s so good that my wife, in all her elegant womanly glory, enjoyed it
The only anime i will watch dubbed. My first was Battle of the Planets when I was little. Bebop was one of the first that I could follow when it came out.
My city had anime stores in the 90s. You could buy the anime, but you could also rent it. There was a martial arts supply store that along with selling martial arts gear, rented martial arts movies and anime. There was also a network television station (local, not Sci fi) that showed anime late night on Sundays.
9/2/2001, Bebop came on adult swim(which was new too atm) was so happy to watch it but 9 days later that happiness was completely overtaken, especially being a New Yorker, and Bebop was put under the radar in my world and I wouldnt discover it until 2003 by my late best friend David. Bebop will always remind me of that awful event that happened a week later bc it really did change so much. This show is VERY special to me for so many reasons and it was nice to learn that anime is beyond fantasy(DBZ). Thank you for this and shout out to Cartoon Network for Toonami/Adult Swim!
I first watched this when I was in highschool in like '04, and I've watched the series all the way through dozens of times, it's also a show unlike most others where I can choose any random episode and enjoy it, it's mostly episodic nature really is a boon for it. It's one of those shows where all the hype is well deserved, and after about 20 years of watching anime and hundreds of series later I can say bebop is probably my favorite anime.
It’s so fucking good man!! I remember watching ep 5 for the first time in 2001 on the first run , I was 12 at the time. That scene with spike falli while greenbird plays in the back had my jaw on the floor. It was the first time a piece of media brought a tear to my eye and I didn’t even know why lol. That’s art brutha
I call _Cowboy Bebop_ _Peter Gunn_ as space opera to describe it to people. You hint at what made it so appealing to Western audiences: The series was a total homage to the best aspects of American popular culture from the mid and late 60s. Everything from the way it was drawn to the use of Jazz and Blues to the space operas of that period to the odd quasi-existential mood and outlook of the characters. If it doesn't remind you of Alfred Bester stories, early Larry Niven, Marvel comics, _Route 66,_ you've got some catching up to do.
Really interesting and enjoyable video. I'm one of those people that saw Bebop in 2001, late at night on Adult Swim, and have been hooked ever since. Respectfully, one thing this video doesn't emphasize enough in reference to its staying power is the music. The soundtrack to Cowboy Bebop is second to none. Yes, there may be iconic songs, motifs and melodies in other series and films. The breadth, consistency of quality, daring, passion, and technical mastery on display in the music is an inseparable ingredient. I've often said the music is one of the main characters. Yoko Kanno is a genius.

I remember when it first came to adult swim I told my mom I was staying up for this show not realizing it came on @12 and had school the next day boy I'm glad I did I witnessed history still till this day my favorite anime and it wasnt even my first anime
I may not be a fan but I can't argue with the show's success and popularity and impact on everyone.
I genuinely felt like bebop was the best and my fav anime for about 20 years and it's still a one of a kind
Good job on adding additional nuance to Cowboy Bebop's historical context and cultural influence! 👏🏾
Everyone give dude a like so his videos get seen more. He did good work lets help him out.

Dude had to snipe at ant-vaxers. I’m not claiming the group, but where did that come from?
I hope this channel go big in 2023
Yeah! Been waiting for this one since Samurai Champloo! Get it fellas
love the behind the scenes videos, it's hard to find something people haven't talked about with cowboy bebop 1000 times
I think that's the wrong photo of Jonathan Clements at 5.33. That Jonathan Clements' writes books on finance.
Bebop will forever be one of my favorite animes, actually just re-watched it recently. Great vid, love your stuff
"I don't watch anime but I've seen Cowboy Beebop and I liked it." That was my brother. He never got into anime with me but he at least didn't bad mouth it. And the fact that it was constantly playing on Adult Swim meant I always had something to watch if nothing else.
Missed you guys! Let’s start off 2023 right because 2022 ended rough
Slick piece of work that nailed everything about the show. Nice to reminisce about this show.
Your patreon pitch has gotten pick up artist smooth lol. I barely realized I was being wooed until more than half way through
The story that needed to be told about the series that needed to be made.
That concluding paragraph was really well done. Very well-written.
I caught it halfway through it's first run in 2001 and that was all I needed. And then Adult Swim strates their anime block on Saturdays and I got to see so many more cool series. It's a perfect starter anime because it's both very good and also very easy to watch since it's such a short series.
What a joy to also learn Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Steve Blum are married. Spike and Julia are a couple irl now too!
That is the most metal thing ever
bebop you don't stop, the original bpop bebop vid is in their playlists if you're interested
In high school on multiple days my brother and I wouldn't go to sleep until like 1 or 2 am. It was easy as our parents didn't get home from work until right after the AS Toonami block ended.
Even my mom fell in love with Cowboy Bebop and Trigun.
What an incredible video. This is one of the most thought-out, well-produced and engaging TH-cam essays I've seen in some time. Instant sub.
There are so many little things that give you clues in the show that take years to notice . I fucking love it
I seen Bebop first time like 15 years ago. I have changed as a person and that,s why that show hits in a different way every time i rewatch it.
What coincidence that this video is the first to come up on my feed just right after I unboxed and display my Cowboy Bebop figures. It is one of my all time favorite anime that I grew up watching as a 90s kid and still watch it like once a year. A true classic and a masterpiece that will live on in the ages to come.
I’ve never been so early, so I’ve never given appreciation to videos like this, but this was a great video to start my day! You’re killin’ it!!
Loved this show, only recently saw it completely; love it even more now.
What I hear you saying is:
How does this channel not have at least as many subs as MB?
This channel rocks.
I saw it as an angsty teen during its first or second run on adult swim. Those rainy nights, staying up way too late, the melancholy - it felt like it was made for me. Cowboy Bebop helped in some part to shape who I am today.
Me and you both.
@@stoicbartenderlots and lots of us brutha . We all carry that weight!
Woohoo, here we go starting another year with a BANG!
I loved Cowboy Bebop! See you Space Cowboy! :D
I just finished it last night. It's cool that it came to America the year I was born.
I've considered getting an official Bandai set, but I still watch this bootleg set from time to time.;)
Yep, bootleg was the only option. I think I had at least three copies until I finally got one that played correctly all the way through!
Ahh that Patreon slip in was smoooth as butter 🧈
Bebop is one of the few pieces of media (no matter the format) that is flawless.
It’s so good that my wife, in all her elegant womanly glory, enjoyed it
Very well written and said, loved that spoken word poetry thing you did there at the end
one of the smoothest and most compelling patreon plugs ive ever heard, well done fr.
The only anime i will watch dubbed. My first was Battle of the Planets when I was little. Bebop was one of the first that I could follow when it came out.
I met Blum, nice guy,he quoted Megas XLR
3 2 1 let's jam
My city had anime stores in the 90s. You could buy the anime, but you could also rent it. There was a martial arts supply store that along with selling martial arts gear, rented martial arts movies and anime. There was also a network television station (local, not Sci fi) that showed anime late night on Sundays.
Never was I more grateful to watch reruns. You figure they should of continued the show.
An amazing anime, and one of those that was my gateway into it.
Along with Ninja Scroll & DBZ.
Thank you for this and shout out to Cartoon Network for Toonami/Adult Swim!
dont you mean like 9 months later?
@@SteveIsHavingMC um 9/11 buddy...
@@Scantronacon which is 9 months later than 9/2...
@@SteveIsHavingMC 9/11/2001 when the towers fell. What are you talking about?
@@Scantronacon 11th of september, which would be 11/9/2001, yes
I watched it on Winamp streaming and it was my first anime.
Cowboy Bebop is above all other Animes in its own class!
One of the best disections of what makes CowBoy Bebop a true a memorable classic. Love your guys work and the channel.
I'm bout to go watch Cowboy Bebop again! Thanks!
Yoko Kanno is a genius.
at the 1:55 you mention an anime that I really loved, Trigun, I had completely forgotten about it, Thank you!
