+William Anuschomper wtf are you talking about? he was just saying he hates when people call metal "devils music".. like when pastors in churches preach to the congregation and speak of heavy metal and say it is music of the devil. And you disagree with this? So are you saying that you think metal is solely devils music? or maybe you were replying to the moron vinyl and not Josh. Sorry but it is just confusing and I don't see how someone can disagree with someone saying they hate when people call metal, devils music.

I can't respect people who say they HATE metal. Its never for a good reason, I don't understand why anyone would go as far as hating metal. Its not like its all over the place chasing them around the same way rap and pop music does to us.

macaron3141592653 And I don't like people like you. I don't like metal but I never insult or make fun of metal music? I just don't like it. IT'S NOT FOR ME. Just like how [insert your least favorite music genre] is not for you. And you don't need a reason why you don't like it. I can see why people enjoy metal music but do you need to force your taste of music to people who don't like it? Are all metalheads this easily triggered and can't accept different opinions?

    • @kaylaisnothere4397
      @kaylaisnothere4397 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Nora Farron He means people who are intolerant beyond compare and bash anyone who disrespects someone for being a metal fan and just flat out says the most rude comments about it. Those people I can't stand. I am fine though with people respectfully disagreeing. I only hate people who act completely rude towards metalheads because most often I never disrespect the music anyone personally enjoys. (in fact I enjoy most music) It all boils down, for me, by the person's attitude. They can disagree, but I don't find it very mature when they go on to say people who enjoy rock/metal are "retarded", "unintelligent", or something other along the lines of insult. I don't like country or pop all that much, but I don't ever get up in anyone's face and insult them for enjoying either. I am completely fine if that attitude is the same towards me. Don't like metal, fine, but when someone attacks me for it then I think it's not courteous or respectful at all.

Metal would be great if it was all instrumental and if people didn't like shit metal that was either too slow or too fast to where it all ends up sounding like pooping noises.

A musical reason isn't a good reason? Like there's never been a good metal singer, ever. Just because you think there is doesn't mean I do. To me they all are subpar cocksuckers.

What really bugs me is when people (usually older people like my dad) say that metal isn't music, it's just "noise." That's just really intolerant. I don't care much for modern hip hop or electronic music, but I admit that it's music, a form of art, and not just noise.

    • @Nothing_serious

To be fair most metal are really just loud, aggressive music and it doesn't help that there's either growling, shrieking, squealing etc. and some people just can't stomach it and it's really irritating to their ears.

As a huge fan of hard rock and some metal..I believe your dad is just expressing his dislike..It probably "sounds" like noise to him...I like a lot of music but there is a fair amount that I do NOT like..I could describe some of it as noise to me...Music is like food...If I dont like a certain food it doesnt mean that I disqualify it as being food...Nor does it mean there is something wrong with me for NOT liking whatever it is..I think hip hop music and/or rap music is more than awful...But hey, if someone else likes it, knock yourself out !!

i think the whole reason metal and satan are related is because satan is a rebel who wanted to have his own independent veiws on things. while metal is very similar to that. so i dont see anything wrong with embracing a revolutionist who rebelled against a tyrant who calls his people sheep. :D

    • @satan6500

its not about one person . metal its self is satanic because it opposed the mainstraim pop media. like replace the word satanic with outcast and that is what i mean because satan means opposer. there will be a time when people will see satan as the revolutionist like promethues who gave man knowledge instead of this demon who wants torture people.

    • @negsurbansports1234
      @negsurbansports1234 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Sa tan Satan means adversary, not opposer. And actually if you look back to the hebrew where it is originally used it probably doesn't even denote a being as we know it. And also music is only a medium, and any message can be portrayed with it. You know there are a lot of religious metal bands? Doesn't seem so satanic to me. Now there are satanic metal bands, but I bet you could find the same in other genres. By your logic the real satanic music would be twelve tone classical composition from people such as Alban Berg. That is opposed to mainstream music in the most extreme way, and way more so than metal.

Let me break music down to a science. Music, (which is sound) is a stimulus. One like any other that releases chemicals in your brain, that makes you feel a certain way. So whether it be, rap, dubstep, techno, metal of any kind, country, gospel, etc. it doesn't matter. Everyone has different stimuli. We all feel differently to things. So instead of criticizing others for what they find good in music, just appreciate the fact they are feeling that stimulus from what they listen to cause it releases the chemicals and makes them feel good. So let people play what they like, and let others enjoy it. Thank you.

I love metal. However, I'm not one of those guys who worships it and put it above every other type of music. When it comes to metal, I usually listen to the experimental, avant-garde and progressive side of metal, but I like bits and pieces of some of the other subgenres as well. What I can't stand about some metal fans is how narrow minded some of them can be. They think that only metal (and rock) are the only forms of music that are worth listening to and everything else is lame. There is plenty of good music outside of metal and rock, you are just too close minded to see that. There is crappy music in metal and rock, just like every other form of music. If it sounds good to me, I'll listen to it. I don't really label myself as a metalhead, since my taste in music is way too board for such labels.

I don't think Christians are generally against metal. I think it's just the normal, people who aren't around it don't understand it. If you find a non Christian GF and her mom who have never been around metal and don't like it, chances are they will say "Doesn't that make you angry when you listen to it?" or something in that nature. I really don't see a lot of Christians against metal in reality. I see a ton of people in metal who are Christians.

Nice video! I have a few thoughts to add: I always saw simplistic music as a way to make money, because it's what the average person likes because most people aren't listening to analyze what's going on with the instruments. I'm part of a music community that deals mostly with the extreme styles (mostly death,) yet for all the brutal sounds, we have some of the most well-behaved crowds. It's partly because much of the crowd are musicians from other bands, and also because it's about a healthy release of energy. We're all about supporting the music scene.
I see death metal vocals more as another instrument, and am perfectly happy if I don't understand it all without a lyric sheet. At shows, many bands make up for this by the ways they introduce the next song. For clear vocals, there are always power metal bands too-sort of the 80's sound but upgraded.
The main attraction for me is musicians taking chances and pushing themselves to the limit. Most modern death, black, and power metal music requires technical skill and stamina, and experimentation helps too. I personally play an experimental bass that reaches the depths of human hearing (16.35 Hz {C0} at the bottom) and always come off stage covered with sweat from the way I play fast rhythms machine-gun style with three fingers. (The helmet and gear help too, heh heh.) My thought was always to make metal music that sounds good on a subwoofer system, and hopefully our forthcoming first album accomplishes that.
One last note: many bands stay away from satanic lyrics because it's seen as cliche. If they do, it's to tell a story. My favorite bands are all about telling stories: just look at the classic Iron Maiden song Rime of the Ancient Mariner!
    Cheers!

Here's the thing man; And I'll make my commentary as short as possible but also cover in detail what I believe about this subject: The old school of rockers embraced bands that employed elementary levels of odd time signatures and did better than tolerate it. Take for example, Zeppelin. But here's my point... Music traditionally didn't employ a vocalist that performed from a place of aggression to the point that they sacrificed melodic aspects of music for the sake of distortion and volume. But metal did that. And several big bands of the folk and rock genre(which many people share a fondness of between genres), secured an importance in storytelling and the impact of a good story in music. I think what bothers a lot of new people is simply the fact that they aren't hearing a narrative. Specially if they can't understand it. So 2 things I would blame it on beyond the religious conflicts, are the intolerance for aggression in music and the research and interest you have to take in a band to discover what they are speaking about or trying to say. That's my 2 cents.

I listen to metal for the same reasons I listen to all music i enjoy. Exploration of thought and hearing another persons point of view. Pink Floyd is a great example here. Their music was spawned by the philosophy of an existentialist thinker; questioning reality and finding purpose within it. Our species cannot define in absolute terms these following questions. Who are we? What is our purpose? Where are we going?
It is for this reason that I listen to music, read, and yearn for the company of others. It is for this reason that I cannot deal with the mentality of most pop, rap, country, etc. When an artist/artists conveys a message in their music that seemingly tells you ''I got it made'', ''This is how to live'', ''I got it all figured out'', ''look at all my money'' I change the damn station. Our current paradigm is that of servitude and worship of idols. ''We are barely out of the jungle folks'' -- George Carlin
No, we haven't figured everything out and when an inflated ego wants to showcase their bank account... all I can figure is that they've stopped growing and learning. Having a ton of money is no excuse, and it certainly won't buy you manners or intelligence.

It depends. 80s Metallica and 90+ Metallica are two entirely different bands. 80s Metallica is metal and put out four metal albums. 90s Metallica released a hard rock album, 2 blues rock / southern rock albums, a hard rock album that slightly merges into metal but is a shit album overall ( st anger ) a cover album full of rock covers, a light metal album, and an absolutely terrible rock album with Lou reed. Metallica have been rock longer then metal tbh.

  • @marcinlewandowski9334
    @marcinlewandowski9334 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Thanks for doing that. That was very enlightening and I agree pretty much with everything except: yes, heavy metal, I mean THE heavy metal genre, or, rather, classic heavy metal (I mean, I heard "Enter Sandman" by Metallica on an OLDIES station, go figure) is typically embraced by the average Dick and Jane. However, when you delve into hard core, thrash and especially death and black these genres are of jungian philosphy, that is, they deal with archetypes and the subconscious, to put religuously, with the interplay of god and devil in every human being. A great example is Opeth, the archetype of light and dark, recently significantly diluted but still very much present, but you listen to "Still Life" and it's evidently jungian in that how the victim is the violator is the victim. That is really what is scary to people, to quote Slayer, have you ever wondered why it seems it's evil you're attracted to? (Temptation off Seasons in the Abyss, I believe). So people may SAY that they have a problem because this reminds them of the dark lord, when in reality this music and lyrics is like a mirror to their heart and it reflects EVERYTHING since in dark metal there is no taboo on any subject, everything can be and is discussed. People, especially children, are usually fed pleasantville and then it's such a shock when a loved one dies of cancer or is mugged or rape or even when someone you love does not love you back. Especially in the feel good no stress american society we live in we are thus raising a bunch of weakwilled individuals who think some force will always take care of them. Compare that to Slayer's lyrics in Sex Murder Art. On the surface it is a sick lyric of the way a cereal killer thinks but could this not also be how life can seem THAT brutal whereby "you're nothing...a subjected manekin...beaten into submission...raping again and again"? In that sense, metal is too REAL to people, real music for real people. And here is another reason people hate heavy metal. It reminds people of impermanence of it all ie death. Everything, including you and I, has an expiration date. The fear of the OBVIOUS is what drives people away but, and I hate to quote Phil Anselmo but he's right on when he sings "in time you see the darkness, but darkness is a friend to you EMBRACING ALL OF THE MADNESS" and what I believe it means is that if you take the time to befriend your demons they won't fuck with you so much because they'll start respecting you. In that sense metal has truly been my savior since 1991 as it helped do just that. I like your rhetoric, man, everything, not just metal. It always makes me think something we are slowly losing the right to in this country

jr4chargers Nope. That is not what I was saying. First, I am saying that stereotypes are not in themselves a bad thing. And about being an honest person and owning your stereotypes, I don't know how to be more clear, but I will try. If you are a country musician, and someone comes up and says, "I don't like the way country music sounds twangy." Even if YOU personally play country that ISN'T twangy, if you are honest, you just say, yeah, a lot of it is - and LET IT GO!

Exactly my point. I like to listen to metal, but I'm not one of those Satan-worshipping black-metal (not all are, just some) listeners. I enjoy anything from vintage Metallica to August Burns Red and lots of bands in between. My mom says "it's angry and promotes rage and Satan," but she not as open-minded as some of us. I'm a God-fearing Christian who knows great music, and heavy metal has always been there for me. I find great messages through the music, and I always get a big smile on my face when a great guitar solo plays.

Also I might add that my parents are big classic rock fans due to being young in the 70's, and I was exposed to stuff like Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin while very young. I prefer 90's symphonic metal to the 60's and 70's classics; that's my dad's forte. I used to think I disliked rock and metal altogether. But it was really only a matter of time until my inner metalhead came out. :P

Are there any female fans of metal out there? I absolutely love metal, though I love many other genres of music as well, both complex and simple. As a long-time fan of classical music, my tastes run toward symphonic metal (the stuff that comes out of Scandinavia) because of their classical influences and orchestral stylings. Good job on this video. I used to find metal hard to listen to because it was "noisy." Now that I'm older, I hear the intensity and complexity as a thing of great beauty.

1:40 Loud and clear are mutually exclusive. According to the Fletcher-Munson effect, louder sounds may seem clearer at first, when in fact, the'ye not.
#4 - Virtuosity and technicality are not everyone's cup of tea. Especially considering that vast portion of metal musicians use technique as the final goal to reach.
#3 - You may also notice that almost 99% of bands with unitelligible lyrics have extremely boring and repetitive song structures...Ending up being as bad, if not worst than, pop songs with sampled stuff. It doesn't really matter what the quality of the lyrics are if you can't make sense of them.
Also, the whole fast lyrics that are hard to understand, with weird words and all are the rap's equivalent of virtuosity and technicallity in other genres as the rest is sampled.
#2- As with pretty much every fan, they have the 'cult' or 'clique' elitist mentality, which gives metal a bad name. As opposed to the bands itselves, the fans are the ones giving metal a bad name. This applies to pretty much every oher genre out there, but metal seems to have the most vocal elitist fans.

A problem I have with some metal fans is that "progressive" bands like Dream Theater, Kamelot or Sonata Arctica, which do happen to be more artistically insightful or melodic are always called "gay pop shit" which is contradictory. Pop music is known to be highly simplistic "fun" music with little depth behind its lyrics. Wouldn't at least calling bands like these "emo" be a more accurate insult?
Anyways, on the topic of it being too loud or inaudable growls, when you really think of it there's alot of punk rock bands that can be just as loud or louder than alot of heavy metal bands, like GG Allin or the Offspring.

~That song 'changes' is 'sunshine' music. its designed to make you feel happy and that kind of music everyday all day drives me mad! its ok in small doses but eventually its smiling repetitiveness is like a nail in my head forcing me to be a 'happy clappy chappy' all day everyday!!
~By the way, what you're basically saying is you should NOT listen to 'ride of the valkyries' you should ONLY listen to 'ode to joy' because its 'NICER MUSIC'!. which makes you 'one of them'! goodshow . . . ;)

Art is subjective and you really have to explore to find out how it connects with you. Same thing goes with metal. It is an experience where you have to read the lyrics ,understand the emotional connection and the artistic layers of the lyrics ,music and the overall experience.

I agree with you. I have heard some metal music where overall musicianship is so unique and beautiful that I just wished that it would have been even better (at least for me) if I could get it without vocals. That is why I admire some of the bands now a days that are mixing growls with other clean vocals. It make sense to growl when the message is aggressive and not when its a bit soft message.

    People hate metal because:
    1) Lyric wise is the most unrelatable music there is. Punk is political, hip hop about the streets, even pop is about dancing and having a good time. Metal is usually about fantasy stuff, horror, occultism, etc. Stuff that no one really gives a crap about.
    2) The looks. Usually beer drinking fatties, with ill fitted jeans, some unknown metal band t-shirt, jackets and greasy long hair. Most unfashionable people in the planet.
    3) Self aggrandizing bands that indulge in long boring guitar solos, drum solos, bass solos, etc.
    4) Segregation. While early english rock n roll took a lot from Anerican black culture, metal gravitated towards a close knit of suburban white males and everyone else was an intruder.
    5) The 80’s. Can someone think of a more embarassing phase in music than 80’s metal? While people still go back to 70’s and 90’s rock, the 80’s will forever live in infamy. Tue metal music of that era belong in the trash cans of music history.
    6) The fans. The most close minded peopke there is, that were quick to mock bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains for not being true metal. Those fans today still mock the likes of Mastodon and Gojira as being sell out. Because apoarently you can only listen to bands with frontmen that are 60 something year old tvat have lost tgeir voice and look ridicolous playing this kind of music at that age.
And by the way, I love Sabbath, Metallica and Pantera; but thise banfs are just so aboce tge rest that tgey gave trascended the metal label.

Another reason people don't like metal music is because it's a style that doesn't give a fuck about political correctness. Not like rap, rap usually goes out of it's way to provoke, metal just doesn't give a fuck. Most metalheads strive to be individuals, have their own opinions and openly disagree with the parts of the system they don't like, and that scares a lot of people.

  • @AbysmiOs778

The biggest reason I've experienced is simply that people write it off without even listening to it and won't give it a chance. In order to show someone that metal isn't all screaming I played him "The Unforgiven II" by Metallica and within the opening seconds he said it was all screaming and growling and turned it off. People are happy with the simplistic crap that is played on the radio because they're not really music fans, so aren't interested in seeing what other genres have to offer.

I've found that bands that use growls and screams tend to (for the most part) use these angry vocals to express an angry message, groups such as Slipknot and Slayer used this best. And then you take a band like Iron Maiden, Bruce Dickinson uses a very epic operatic style, and it fits their music that is supposed to sound big and epic.

The trouble with volume wars and 'metal being too loud' isn't to do with the volume control on your stereo, it's the mastering of the original recording. Have you heard the retail version of Death Magnetic? It has no dynamic range at all, it's horribly compressed and messing with the volume has no effect and it still sounds horrid. On Master of Puppets, the quiet bits were quiet and the loud bits were loud, as it should be for full effect.

  • @GustoFormula

Ok, that's a reasonable statement, but that's why it's so great that it has so much variety, some metal bands never even use solos, and have clean vocals. Tool, for example.

I also think the music sounds better loud, unlike easy listening or softer music. That is why people tend to crank the volume IMO. And yea, I think more people complain about the guttural noise and growling in metal, where as the volume argument can be applied to all forms of music.

    Exactly, Mr. Muffin. Exactly.
Same goes for drumming. There are completely different paradigms and sides to it. The average simpleton will think that drumming is simply creating a rhythm/beat in a song. When it is so much more... It also accompanies tempo, and directly relates to the rest of the music being played. Among other things... The typical fast double-bass exists to maintain a tempo, and create a constant in relation to; say, the guitars.
