What are the odds a betting scandal sinks the Tories?

- Presenter turned political campaigner Carol Vorderman joins Sky News political editor Beth Rigby and Conservative peer Ruth Davidson as the general election campaign enters its final fortnight.
Jess has chosen Carol for her subs bench this time because of the campaigning she now does on social media.
They assess the damage accusations people close to the PM placed bets on the election date, could have on the Conservative campaign.
Plus, Beth, Ruth and Carol talk about why some listeners are seeing no campaigning on their doorstep, while others can’t escape the leaflets.
Email Beth, Ruth, and Carol at electoraldysfunction@sky.uk, post on X to @BethRigby, or send a WhatsApp voice note on 07934 200 444.
In this episode we mention the constituency of Bristol North West, the full list of candidates are:
• Caroline Gooch (Liberal Democrats)
• Darren Jones (Labour Party)
• Scarlett O'Connor (Reform UK)
• Mary Page (Green Party)
• Laura Saunders (Conservative and Unionist Party)
• Ben Smith (Social Democratic Party)
Huge respect for Vorderman and mentioning HOL reform. As for betting, the Tories love 3 word slogans, and now they have a new one, "Stop The Bets."
It's to the point now that the Tories bad governance is flowing into the campaign. Showing just how bad they are at it.
The 2011 referendum was on the Alternate Vote system, which is non-proportional. There has never been a referendum on introducing Proportional Representation. Quite a few Tory and Labour MPs have repeated the lie over the years that PR was rejected at the ballot box, when it was never an option on the ballot paper.
I always wanted it, until now. FPTP is protecting us from the far right. Whether we educate ourselves out of it is an open question.
AV is a version of FPTP. PR is completely different.
@@newchrisusa Given the huge shift to the right of the present government I have to question whether FPTP has protected us at all.
There isn't one form of PR, there are a whole spectrum, from purely proportional (like for the Israeli Knesset) to Single Transferable Vote (as used in Australia) to top up systems (such as currently used for the London Assembly) to AV (which was used for the London Mayor until this election). While AV is the least proportional, it is still more representative than FPTP. However, proportionality isn't the only virtue - the trouble with purely proportional system is they allow extremist parties into Parliament (one reason Israeli politics is so fraught) when they're generally kept out of the House of Commons (eg. the BNP have never had an MP). A more proportional system would certainly see more representation of the more extreme parties (Reform might get a handful of MPs in the upcoming election, but if they get the 17% they're currently polling, they'd be due about 100MPs under a purely proportional system).
"It wasn't that everyone hates us.... It was that terribly unfortunate scandal."
Zero seats.
And the response would be: "Which one?"
Who'd have thought the Hill the tories chose to die on was William Hill (shamelessly nicked from elsewhere)
😂
It’s honestly like watching a party commit political suicide this campaign but they’re so incompetent they have to do multiple scandals to finally get it done.
So funny
Sounds like a lot of things are going to sink the tories.
I saw David Davies outraged last night when a Nick Soames suggested that the latest alleged 'bet' person should be suspended whilst being investigated. He said - outraged - innocent until proved guilty and to suspend him would be ....(hah!)..against his 'human rights'. Apart from total ignoranance of human rights definitions etc, poor David hasn't the slightest knowledge of basic HR practice. On allegation, suspension allows for fair investigation and to protect all parties etcc. But then again, in Tory circles, ignorance is bliss for them - and their ignorance can afflict all.
For the nth time, the AV system is NOT proportional although it gives a more representative mandate to voters because a candidate cannot win a constituency without achieving as near to 50% as is possible of the total number of votes cast. Under FPTP candidate can win a constituency with less than 30% of the vote.
😅
Why does Davidson try to be ordinary, she a rabid Tory.
She has no love for Westminister...
@@michaelstanley3961 no love for Scotland either!!
This. Scottish Tory couldn't bring herself to call the ex leader of the Labour Party in Westminster name with any courtesy when she was in the cosy little double act with the Channel 4 reporter.
(Where's our Jess)?
I'm no acolyte of the ex leader of the Labour opposition, (really really I'm not), but when Davison delivered her spiel, I felt sick at the dismissive way that he was verbally treated by using his surname only.
I suspect that all the folks stumbling onto this video will think I am pernickety or at best unhinged. So kill me now.
Old people deserve to be treated with dignity.
Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity BUT I would make an exception when it comes to flipflop Davidson.
Scotland doesn't miss her!
Wow, Ruth at 25:40 what a magnificent response! So well-articulated, so direct, so true 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
The TORIES ARE sunk already
Tories know they are going out go out with a bang 😂
Don't bet on Ritchie Sunak keeping his seat.
Wouldn’t that be lovely
Wouldn’t that be lovely
Wouldn’t that be lovely
He could be in California before all of the votes are counted.
"How not to run an election campaign" by the UK Conservatives. Which follows from their "How not to run a country". :)
Week by week they lose 30 more seats. It's now less than 60, with a fortnight to go.
Of all the things...
They're already as sunk as the Titanic. 🤔
Worst campaign ever!
Snouts in the trough. VOTE THEM OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Its like hangman, every time they cock up, the gallows are being built by the cabinet outside No 10. Im sure Rishi can hear the saws and hammers and is in the corner of the room just repeating, the flights "will go" wont they...........
Glad to hear bits of Ruth are falling off. Couldn't happen to a more principled politician...
Love this comment section as if Labour weren’t involved in this is laughable there politicians all on the take always have and nothing. Will change 😂😂😂
Carol is a great standin
Wanka!!!
I grew up watching Carol V, genuinely think she’s inspirational.
What is Electoral Dysfunction.I have never heard of this type of Dysfunction.
I only know of a few.
I think they were going for 'electile dysfunction,' but it was probably taken.
@@newchrisusa Electile Dysfunction ⚡💯⚡
Ruth would've made a great Tory leader!
😂
I'm voting Reform. The Conservatives failed to listen to the voters.
Farrage wants a private health system aka the USA system. Look at his past videos….. he’s rich and can afford private health care and doesn’t want to pay for anyone else’s via tax for an NHS. Look beyond his slogans.
Could not listen to this - it really does make a mockery of what should be the delivery of professional news.
painful eh?
It's not news, it's opinion.

No one gives a toss about “betting scandals”.
Unfortunately sky news hasn’t been focusing on the unassimilated immigration for the past 20 years or so preferring these rather childish gotcha tactics.
People are tired of the Conservative Party. The Sky is for Starmer irrespective of how he performed that is why we prefer not to talk about the debate and chose other lines of attack.
I am not a Tory supporter but Sunak is more competent than Starmer
From the announcement in the rain, to D-day, to this failure of discipline, Sunak's campaign has been a sh*tshow of utter failure. I'm somehow not seeing the complete clusterf*ck from Starmer that would make him less competent than this.
Tories are finished
Let’s pray so
Love, love, love Vorderman, she's so good. The work she's been putting in this past 8 months or so is fantastic and I love the way she just goes for it, no holding back, calls them all out. Big up Carol, keep going girl...
Ruth, What a lot of people want is not necessarily the end of the Conservatives but the corruption and venal behaviour that they have stood for. A lesson needs to be taught!
"Venal" is a new word to me and it seems to be interchangeable with "Conservative." That needs to change and "One-National" Conservatives need to take back their party.

Insider information in betting is illegal same as insider trading in business
Zero. The tories can survive an infinite number of scandals. We just expect it of them
They sunk a long time back. Last attempts to make a few more pounds.
Jess I thought I was hoarse from talking to a lot of people at a conference last week turned out to be covid
Beth is a smart reporter, but what is she doing with these two man haters? The men won't listen to this !
Love this channel!
This election maybe, like Ruth says theyll realign and be back.
Tell us Beth. Did Sunack bet 1 million on the tories to lose?
How can I stop being interrupted by advertisements without warning?
Obviously the exchange of ideas is important, but the Conservative Party has no inherent right to be that voice of the right-wing. Just like Labour has no right to always be the voice of the Left. When parties fail they deserve to be punished and replaced.
How long until Rishi is questioned or turned on saying he asked/told them to bet
So excited that Carol was on the show today!
Paid to talk a lot of rubbish and people believe it 😅 sad really 😢
Love Carol!!!
Given we know there is video. Can we please see the video here? Enjoyable. Want more carol and Ruth potential barbs. And certainly further exploration of why Ruth doesn’t seem to be for PR
And not I often dislike Ruth’s takes, but sad she didn’t come out and say “yes we need PR to properly reflect our populace”
Particularly as Scottish representative. I hate the like of Reform, but I’d rather PR and they have a voice (likewise LD, Green and independents) than the two party free for all.
How is FPtP representing the people?
It’s TH-cam at least have video 😂
Whos the chick on the left?
Sky and dysfunction, makes a good pair.
#Carol4PM :)
They are going down like the Titanic I'm voting Reform UK.
