Our elections in US are so long because there is no official campaign period. Congress never gets dissolved like parliament does. It’s possible for elected people to still meet and pass bills any day up to Election Day. So members of congress and presidential candidates just begin campaigning whenever they want.

Fixed terms are bad - they mean that campaigns actually start 6 months out or more (regardless of the law) - at least when it's discretionary everyone keeps their powder dry until the starting gun. Canada has wandered into this 'innovation' too, and it's been a bad thing here.
