It's not odd-looking, it's only oddly held -- if he was playing it between his knees, it wouldn't be odd at all.
I want one! I'm a bad viola player with a very bad instrument and posture-induced pain. I reckon one plays this in a far more natural and healthy position. And the RESONANCE!

Isn't this an instrument called "Violoncello Piccolo" that Bach featured in several of his Sonatas? and few years ago Christophe Coin and his Limonges Baroque Ensemble made a recording of and featured himself on the instrument? I am just asking because I am not a cellist but still I would like to know....

Lo triste de todo es que mi intención era comentar que estos grandes genios de la música tan sólo son gente como nosotros, que viven el día a día pero, que en lo que hacen deben crear su estampa única e inmemorable! Y que la imagen es parte de ellos, es ese tal que les permita crear un sello en nosotros.

Hi Telemann, Good morning! This is not a Piccolo like Coin, has one. This instrument is called "Violoncello da Spalla" played on the shoulder, or Spalla in Italian. Coin's instrument is a 5 sting cello, between the knee's and smaller than the cello we know now.. Does it help?LPB HQ

Ve donde un luthier :D el seguro te podrá colaborar, aunque su costo es realmente elevado. O compra un cello 1/8 Aunque te quedara faltando una cuerda que seria mas aguda afinada en Mi, pero básicamente puedes iniciarte con eso ;)

Is this actually written for "Spalla" or is it a regular cello transposition. on IMSLP RV403 is a cello piece. Still good what ever it is.
This instrument in the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century was commonly called a violoncello, and which apparently vanished in the second half of the 18th century and now reconstructed.

Vivaldi usava il violoncello da gamba, non da spalla. Ognuno poi oggi può suonare quello che vuole, anche il sax, ma per favore non giustifichiamo storicamente scelte del tutto personali.
It is widely believed that the sixth suite was composed specifically for a five-stringed violoncello piccolo, only Anna Magdalena Bach's manuscript indicates the tunings of the strings, and the other sources do not mention any intended instrument at all. Other possible instruments for the suite include a cello da spalla, a version of the violoncello piccolo played on the shoulder like a viola.
