- The violoncello da spalla is a four- or five-stringed instrument, bigger than the viola, and tuned in the range of the common violoncello.
The pioneering work on the violoncello da spalla done by Lambert Smit (Netherlands) and Sigiswald Kuijken (Belgium) met with considerable scepticism, if not rejection, in the world of ancient music. However, after considerable research on repertoire and in libraries and music instruments musea, I was able to prove that the instrument had indeed existed. I built my first spalla for Sigiswald Kuijken, director of the Belgian ensemble La Petite Bande.
Nowadays spallas are used in renowned baroque ensembles such as La Petite Bande and Bach Collegium Japan and played by known soloists such as Sigiswald Kuijken, Ryo Terakado and Sergey Malov.

The 16 is amazing! So clear and brilliant. The 05, maybe piú profundo, wonderful as well . . .the 16 is a diva, a singer. Bravo Maestro!

The newer one has a noticeably brighter timbre, while the older one sounds warmer.
The golden colored instrument, the last played, was louder and projected its sound better. Maybe it would be the better solo instrument, and the darker colored instrument would be better in ensemble.

I really loved the sound of the newest one. Although the darker instrument sounds also very nice I think the newer one projects the sound better, a brilliant clarity.
I know this is an older video, but I did like the sound of the newest instrument even more, even though the one from 2005 looks nicer to my eyes (I just like the darker varnish). I think the clarity and the evenness of the tone of the newer instrument makes me prefer it ever so slightly, but I also love the deep and warm sound of the older instrument. It's two different sounds, and both are wonderful :)
To my ears I like the sound of the newer one because it's crispness.
