Small correction: Doubling Season, unlike Innkeeper's Talent, does not insta win with Vraska, because it only doubles the counters you put on permanents, not also players. You can ult her right away, but your opponent will only take 9 poison.
@KrishnaVijayraman doesn't work that way. The text on her card says "if they have fewer than nine poison counters, they get poison counters equal to the difference" So even if you had 8, ulting her wouldn't be a kill
I was way more excited about foundation until I realized we are going to have six sets a year and a 3-year rotation. Now it feels more like an afterthought.
I agree. Foundations would be nice if there were 4 sets a year. But maybe the Universes Beyond sets aren't full sets but smaller sets. Like Aftermath or Assassin's Creed. Still won't play standard. Just watching for some juicy commons for pauper.
My LGS owner approached a couple of us last week, to create a team of players for Standard. I was slightly interested and started to absorb Standard content... And like you said, after the weekend's announcements, I'm out before I was even in!
So once this releases, we can: Turn 1: Llanowar Elves Turn 2: impend Overlord of the Hauntwoods Turn 3: Doubling Season Turn 4: Spelunking into Three Steps Ahead, making two Overlords and four Everywhere lands Turn 5: Doppelgang for X=3, perhaps making 12 more Overlords, 3 more Doubling Seasons, and 48 more Everywheres Except that we will have died about 3 turns ago to some Rakdos Fling/Reanimate/Blood Artist combo? Sign me up.
I was slightly off, and also slightly under optimized. If you cast Mirror Room instead of Three Steps Ahead on turn 4, you have enough mana left to cast another Doubling Season, then on turn 5 the Doppelgang will create 24 Overlords, 12 Doubling Seasons, and nearly 400,000 Everywheres.
So interesting thing with Kellan: if you have a Maskwood Nexus style effect or some other way of making him stay a Scout permanently, you can activate the first ability multiple times to add extra instances of the impulse draw effect. Doesn't even revert his power level or cause him to lose double strike. Not sure it's worth building around, but it's kinda cool.
With Lunar Insight, it's worth noting that most tokens also count. A map from Spyglass Siren or a vampire off Preacher of the Schism and so on will let you add "zero" to your list of mana values.
Ooh that’s a good point. Given that, I feel like the Dimir tempo decks and probably any of the U/B and other colors tempo and midrange decks will at least try playing with it as a way to leap ahead on card advantage. But I doubt it’ll be a 4 of or something even if it is playable.
I came here to ask this. Honestly, I feel like this is borderline legacy playable. Delver becomes broken with efficient card draw, so much so that it got Expressive Iteration banned. And it already plays some Baubles for Dragon's Rage Channeler. Toss in Brazen B, Murktide, etc., and this will often be a draw three for three. EI got banned for being a see three, draw two for two.
The other crazy use... Seth mentioned affinity for Leyline Axe but man, Legacy can drop artifact land, Lotus Petal, Mox Opal, for three mana, play Emry for 1 and Patchwork for 2. Turn 2, recur Lotus Petal, play an artifact land, drop a free Frogmyr Enforcer and draw 5 on turn 2? Draw 7 if you can get down Thought Monitor or a 1 drop from Urzas Saga?
Ashroot Animist also happens to hit for 20 if you have two of them. Attack with both, targeting each other. First ability resolves giving the other +4/+4. Then the other one resolves having become an 8/8 and it pumps the other by that much. You're now swinging an 8/8 and a 12/12.
No sweat about the delay, Goldfish will alwys be my primary source of mtg spoilers ;) I'm really optimistic about Foundations and the baseline for power level it's going to set. Making green ramp and elves a potential staple as well as cutting a mana off the cost for unrestricted reanimation feels good. I was personally hoping for Lighting Bolt, but the inclusion of Shock+ smacks that down. But most of all, Doppelgang is probably my favourite non-permanent in all of Maguic, so, like Seth, I'm totally enamored with the idea of Doubling Season in Standard, especilly with Llanowar Elves and Koma. Also question for the people who understand type-changing effects and layers better, if I give the new Kellan all creature types with something like Maskwood Nexus or make all my creatures Scouts with Leyline of Transformation, can I keep activating his first ability to add the ability to impulse draw any amount of times or do timestamps get in the way of that?
YES! I didn't see the bit about us getting Giada back before, but I am so happy. Rotated out before doing much of anything. Super happy to see her return. Hope that she can slot into a good deck this go around.
Hey Seth just wanted to say thanks for being willing to take a picture with me in Las Vegas! It was really cool you were cool about it and I was a little starstruck. Really was a highlight of the weekend for me
I love love these spoil videos. You don't have to hit every card just the juicy ones 😉!! I'm looking forward to you talking about the new Jumpstart commanders!!!
For leyline axe, a funny combo you could use would be turn one shock in a stomping ground, fervent champion, the invigorate, with the perfect hand you could turn one kill
Halana and Alena are getting reprinted into Standard, and synergize really well with Ashroot Animist. Only issue is that they're both occupying the 4 drop slot
I'm a commander only player so my opinion counts less in the community, but I like the designs of all the new cards. I might pick up a foundations box for my students who are in the tabletop club at my school
12:57 If you ramped that hard, It can still die to edict since you’ll likely only have this and one other creature out at most. There’s also more 2-3 mana edict effects coming with this set. I think this card is better as a cheated out Sultai reanimator card a la self mill Zombify etc.
Kellan seems more like Evolved Sleeper, a value-oriented one-drop that also gives you an early threat. Previous B/x midrange decks made use of that a lot, until they got a million 3-drop value creatures (Glissa, Priest of the Schism) which are basically a levelled up Sleepers without all the effort. But it does seem good to me in midrange decks that somehow don't want to play black.
Please Seth, if Giada is going to be in Standard for five years, please, pretty please with sugar on top, pronounce it correctly. It is a soft “gee” like in Luigi or ginger not a hard “g” like in Greg or grass. I know some things you purposefully pronounce wrong, I love hearing you biggle something or someone for four damage, but this is a real name that people have. Thank you for making the best spoiler videos every time it rolls around on the calendar.
@ The character from the plane based off Italian-American mobster movies? To my knowledge, in Italian, a g makes a hard sound when it is before an a, o, u, or h. Otherwise it is a soft sound. Giada also translates into English as Jade, which is a soft g sound. I’m happy to learn new things, but this seems suspect to me.
They left room to power creep into a Leyline Artifact with Living Weapon. That can attack on turn 1 since you have controlled it since the start of that turn.
Huh… If you make Kellan ALWAYS a scout, such as by giving it changeling, you can activate that first ability as many times as you like! And the ability stacks! This could potentially be huge. (Double strike and stat change obviously doesn’t stack)
kykar doesnt look that strong at first glance but its reeeeally good on occulus dread as it can turn manifested permanents face up, i'm also pretty sure you can dump your whole hand with founding the third path as you cast something for free, blinking out the saga, then the saga reenters at end step, you cast another thing, blink out the saga again. Its once per turn but its free. If you have nothing to blink you create tokens, if you have something you get free value. Looks insanely powerful to be honest. Also good on manifest dread decks that were already using the blue white shard guy that i forgot the name. This guy has potential.
Leyline Axe, to me, is kinda cool if there is a equipment themed cEDH deck that wants a free count towards Metalcraft [for Mox Opal] or draw triggers from Padeem [?]
I missed playing with Dreadhorde General in standard so I am looking forward to that. Liliana DHGIs a house of a card and it is by far the Planeswalker that I have ulted the most thanks to Emergent Ultimatium
46:25 lol I thought he said, "Purse Lightning" and I thought about Wizards finally addressing the underserved niche of handbag-centric burn spells. Or maybe, "Purse Lightening", which would be some kind of Treasure-stealing spell.
49:15, I am kinda having a lot of fun with a bant token ramp deck, in alchemy, yes, but i basically make creatures into tokens and start copying them with three blind mice, caretakers talent, for the common good snd so on. Not optimised really good, but I use everywhere land tokens to ramp and cast a big doppelgang, sometimes with ojer taq on the battlefield. If it wins, it looks incredible
Curious if anyone else feels like WotC is looking at EDHREC and thinking that the more they can have commander staples show up in standard, the more likely they can get commander players playing standard. Giada, Elves, Doubling Season, Sang and Exquisite, Koma... Curious what it will do to the format, but this might be the way to revitalize standard if enough decks are viable that prices drop due to not needing EVERY deck to run the same cards.
Man. I just want Dualcaster Mage printed into Pioneer so I can play Neoform again. Got to Rank 50 on the ladder with Historic Neoform before Alchemy obliterated the format into irrelevance.
2:50 Leyline of resonance is only banned in bo1 standard not standard. I think the axe leyline could play pretty well with blacksmiths talent. I tried a Omen hawker Engima Jewel equipment deck this season and it did some things but missing trample was huge. I think it needs a good lifelink equipment to survive though otherwise the red decks are just to fast for it.
ashroot animist + electroduplicate or molten duplication. first one gives the other one +4/+4. then the second one gives +8/+8. so you have an 8/8 and a 12/12 = 20 dmg!
Tbf to Leyline Axe: Baseline would be Fireshrieker at 2 to cast and 2 to equip. Add a mana to equip for the +1/+1, add a mana to cost for the second keyword, bump rarity for the "Leyline" ability and it is a pretty decent equipment at a base level. Bonus that the 2 keywords have so much synergy. Embercleave was Red, Mythic, and way over curve so is a pretty bad comparison. That said, still not a fan.
Ashroot Animist fits perfectly in my standard brawl gruul stompy deck since Alana and Helena coming back also adds more haste gain redundancy, aside from Lavaspur Boots, the Ferocification enchantment, Enduring Courage, Cactusfolk Sureshot, and Yarus Roar of the Old Gods.
I wonder if they're going to re-release foundations every year, or if they're just going to keep pumping out the same packs of foundations. The reason I wonder that is I wonder if they can like take cards out that end up not working well for the standard rotation, or if we'll be beholden to whatever card they printed for foundations
You mentioned Delirium and Prowess, but I've seen plenty of Gruul decks running Beans, Calamity, Smugger's Surprise, and the Overlords, as well. Granted, Ashroot Animist doesn't really go into those, either.
leyline axe might be the swingiest leyline ever (no pun intended). if you don't have it in your opening hand, its 7 total mana for a +1/+1 pump with double strike and trample, which is just inexcusably bad I think
With a name like "Leyline Axe" I was hoping it was going to be something like "Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each basic land type among lands you control." And a cheaper equip cost.
Really seems at this point like there's gonna be an Opalescence style payoff for all the leylines (although with the Axe it would need to say "Artifact or Enchantment").
I can already tell I'm going to lose games to people with the Leyline Axe nut draw, but I don't think I'll be as salty as I was losing to the red leyline decks recently, I don't think it will be anywhere near consistent enough. Will I personally make a deck around it? Maybe, I do like equipment more than I should, could be fun to brew around.
Foundations is going to be good. Standard being the most powerful it has ever been? Not even close. We are no where near affinity power levels. Foundations is going to have 450 cards. We haven't seen anything yet.
46:08, is there really a timing where the Scavenging Ooze could exile the Unstoppable Slasher to keep it from coming back? I think in this case, it really is unstoppable.
leyline Axe may make an appearance in mono green elves funnily enough 😅. turn 0 axe turn 1 mana dork turn 2 equip turn 3 play your elf lord suddenly youve got a big ole double striking mana dork that becomes even bigger as the game goes....does to removal....oh
You're sleeping on scrawling crawler. Whenever they draw any card they lose a life, and they draw 2 cards a turn. This is a 3 drop that deals 2 damage a turn, minimum, potentially 5 if you attack, and more if your opponent is drawing extra cards themselves... and it draws you a card too. That's a lot of hurt for a little guy. The worst case scenario, you play this, your opponent kills it right after the trigger. You're completely even for card advantage - you both drew 1 and lost 1 card, and you dealt a point of damage. Don't get me wrong giving opponents cards is a really big downside, but in the right decks/matchups you can make the juice worth the squeeze. We've all seen what Sheoldred sitting around will do, 2 damage a turn adds up pretty quick. I think in the right deck, this guy is gonna do some work. Just this into Shelly is gonna represent 6 passive damage per turn, that's kinda wild.
Howdy Sett probably you won't notice this but you should recheck some of the legality of commander mh3 cards on Arena on Goldfish site cuz they are not matching. (As in like Akroma's Will being legal when it isnt) I think the confusion cam from they adding the MH3 Commander Commanders which then someone on the crew thought "they are getting everything"
Small correction: Doubling Season, unlike Innkeeper's Talent, does not insta win with Vraska, because it only doubles the counters you put on permanents, not also players. You can ult her right away, but your opponent will only take 9 poison.
Liliana dreadhorde general still does it though.
True, but not too hard to prolif after ulting.
But the assumption is that if you’re playing the combo in Standard, you’ll already have a poison counter on your opponent
Well foundations is going to be legal for atleast 5. I really don't look forward to having to play with the marvel cards.
I agree.
Foundations would be nice if there were 4 sets a year.
But maybe the Universes Beyond sets aren't full sets but smaller sets. Like Aftermath or Assassin's Creed.
Still won't play standard. Just watching for some juicy commons for pauper.
How does this set actively hurt you
Yeah! This!
My LGS owner approached a couple of us last week, to create a team of players for Standard. I was slightly interested and started to absorb Standard content...
And like you said, after the weekend's announcements, I'm out before I was even in!
No Seth, Doubling Season isn't a Panharmonicon for tokens and counters, Panharmonicon is a Doubling Season for ETBs. Respect the OG.
So once this releases, we can:
Turn 1: Llanowar Elves
Turn 2: impend Overlord of the Hauntwoods
Turn 3: Doubling Season
Turn 4: Spelunking into Three Steps Ahead, making two Overlords and four Everywhere lands
Turn 5: Doppelgang for X=3, perhaps making 12 more Overlords, 3 more Doubling Seasons, and 48 more Everywheres
Except that we will have died about 3 turns ago to some Rakdos Fling/Reanimate/Blood Artist combo? Sign me up.

For Ashroom Animist, we DO have a good way to give it haste. the red glimmer is absolutely perfect for this style of deck.
So interesting thing with Kellan: if you have a Maskwood Nexus style effect or some other way of making him stay a Scout permanently, you can activate the first ability multiple times to add extra instances of the impulse draw effect. Doesn't even revert his power level or cause him to lose double strike. Not sure it's worth building around, but it's kinda cool.
the blue leyline already in standard!
With Lunar Insight, it's worth noting that most tokens also count. A map from Spyglass Siren or a vampire off Preacher of the Schism and so on will let you add "zero" to your list of mana values.
I was thinking this exactly! The incidental treasure/map/clue/blood is common, making this quite easy to draw at least 3!
Ooh that’s a good point. Given that, I feel like the Dimir tempo decks and probably any of the U/B and other colors tempo and midrange decks will at least try playing with it as a way to leap ahead on card advantage. But I doubt it’ll be a 4 of or something even if it is playable.

was about to post exactly that haha
There is also ferrocification
it wprks really well with the red enduring card
Possibly with that Electroduplicate that gives the token haste : )
No sweat about the delay, Goldfish will alwys be my primary source of mtg spoilers ;)
I'm really optimistic about Foundations and the baseline for power level it's going to set. I know it’s not a good card anymore, but Savanah Lions has returned to standard for the first time since 9th Edition (2005).
Hey Seth just wanted to say thanks for being willing to take a picture with me in Las Vegas! It was really cool you were cool about it and I was a little starstruck. Really was a highlight of the weekend for me
Welcome back home, Seth! Hope you had a nice, uneventful trip home :)
this seems ominous
I love love these spoil videos. You don't have to hit every card just the juicy ones 😉!! I'm looking forward to you talking about the new Jumpstart commanders!!!
Timestop doesnt work with archaeomancer loops because it exiles itself
For leyline axe, a funny combo you could use would be turn one shock in a stomping ground, fervent champion, the invigorate, with the perfect hand you could turn one kill
Halana and Alena are getting reprinted into Standard, and synergize really well with Ashroot Animist. Only issue is that they're both occupying the 4 drop slot
If anyone builds that deck I hope they name it Lizards and Lesbians(Halana and Alena are the lesbian partners duo card right?)
Yes@@number4497
I'm a commander only player so my opinion counts less in the community, but I like the designs of all the new cards. I might pick up a foundations box for my students who are in the tabletop club at my school
Yeah i agree some are very cool for commander!
5:15 the flavor text is on point... it awaits a worthy wielder. We don't know what deck it may work in, but there's a lot of potential.
turn 4 sphinx of forgotten lore into turn 5 time manipulation into turn 6 flashback the time manipulation
12:57 If you ramped that hard, It can still die to edict since you’ll likely only have this and one other creature out at most. There’s also more 2-3 mana edict effects coming with this set. I think this card is better as a cheated out Sultai reanimator card a la self mill Zombify etc.

Seth: "I will play pretty much every 3 mana draw 3"
Richard: *give Secret Rendezvous*
Jank combo: Kellan with Maskwood Nexus, pay the 2 cost ability as much as you want and stack the exile top card effect.
It's actually pronounced the way he is saying it in many countries -- including the one this character is from.
@ The character from the plane based off Italian-American mobster movies? To my knowledge, in Italian, a g makes a hard sound when it is before an a, o, u, or h. Otherwise it is a soft sound. Giada also translates into English as Jade, which is a soft g sound.

Yay another Kellan. He’s a personal favorite new character so it’s cool to see a mono red one to try and make a commander for
I imagine it'll be the last one we'll see in a while, given his arc ended in OTJ, so it's a nice send-off.
@@RasmusVJS yea probably it was pretty cool plot wise having him travel around and Wizard were smart to give him an ending when need be
kykar doesnt look that strong at first glance but its reeeeally good on occulus dread as it can turn manifested permanents face up, i'm also pretty sure you can dump your whole hand with founding the third path as you cast something for free, blinking out the saga, then the saga reenters at end step, you cast another thing, blink out the saga again. Alesha seems like a fun reanimate commander. Worst case turn 4 attacks and you can get a 3 power or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.
I think with seeing this set, it might be good to start picking up the golgari staples now, because that’s going to be even stronger going forward!
46:25 lol I thought he said, "Purse Lightning" and I thought about Wizards finally addressing the underserved niche of handbag-centric burn spells.
Or maybe, "Purse Lightening", which would be some kind of Treasure-stealing spell.
leyline axe will be a must-grab for commanders that cheat equipment costs a la bruenor battlehammer or (more importantly) captain america
Lunar Insight works even better with a 4+ mana leyline put on the battlefield on turn 0, too.
Note that TIme Stop exiles itself on resolution. So you need something to pull from exile.
Welcome back to the endless spoiler season that is mtg.
New Kellan could be fun in as a basis for an impulse draw deck with Rocco, Street Chef and Quintorious Kand
I like the flavor text for the Leyline Axe
It's basically Thor's Stormbreaker
7:19 “Unesh, Chirosphinx Sovereign” sounds great if you’re a sphinx with spine problems.
Fervent Champion is the only card I can think of that can take advantage of this quickly
As The World's Biggest Unesh Fan, I'm very happy about the Sphinx
Love the axe for my Nahiri deck, affinity for equipment
Man. I just want Dualcaster Mage printed into Pioneer so I can play Neoform again. Got to Rank 50 on the ladder with Historic Neoform before Alchemy obliterated the format into irrelevance.
Yawn
standard has so many two card combos now, it's wild
We have 2 haste enablers I can think of off the top of my head. Enduring courage and cactus folk sureshot
ooooh, enduring courage is so good with it, making it a 6/4 will allow it to give +6!
25:12 ashroot animist seems to pair well with enduring courage. +2/+0 and haste. Both 4 mana, though.
Is leyline axe enough to make metalwork colossus good?
Affinity for Artifacts is going to love Leyline Axe
Just remember that time counters are also counters. So, do not impend with a doubling season out.
Kellan is going to be great in canlander agro decks, being a „backup ragavan“ still worse then ragavan but non the less really good.
3:50 you’re forgetting artists talent. It can work in a deck like that.
Burst Lightning seems okay, but I was really hoping for Play With Fire.
You mentioned Delirium and Prowess, but I've seen plenty of Gruul decks running Beans, Calamity, Smugger's Surprise, and the Overlords, as well. Granted, Ashroot Animist doesn't really go into those, either.
13:22 Giving this thing haste seems sweet... looking forward to trying it in Maelstrom Wanderer
leyline axe might be the swingiest leyline ever (no pun intended). if you don't have it in your opening hand, its 7 total mana for a +1/+1 pump with double strike and trample, which is just inexcusably bad I think
With a name like "Leyline Axe" I was hoping it was going to be something like "Equipped creature gets +1/+1 for each basic land type among lands you control." And a cheaper equip cost.
I mean, a lot of equipment are inefficient if you look at them as costing their mana cost + their equip cost. That's not unique to Leyline Axe.
The gruul lizard will be epic with the new wolverine card
Leyline Axe just means I get to cast Emry from the command zone on turn 1 more consistently
Really seems at this point like there's gonna be an Opalescence style payoff for all the leylines (although with the Axe it would need to say "Artifact or Enchantment").
We want an all Kellan deck in Against the Odds!
Seth, I think you did not consider that tokens count towards Lunar insight - so spyglass siren alrdy counts for 2. cheers
Seth we will need an against the odds "Kellan tribal deck" :)
slumbering cerberus with enchantments for vigilance sounds hilarious
Yay, welcome back, seth!!
I love how I had never heard of this set until now
Turn 2 reckless Storm seerker, turn 3 Animist, attack for 12
46:08, is there really a timing where the Scavenging Ooze could exile the Unstoppable Slasher to keep it from coming back? I think in this case, it really is unstoppable.
There is, since it says "when", which means that it is a triggered ability.
@@RasmusVJS Doh! TIme to go to bed for me 😊
So is this like a corset with different versions, or is this guaranteeing the card prices in the set are nominal moving forward?
Welcome back Seth
I wonder if there's some trick that could be performed with Leyline Axe and Transmute Artifact.
Audio is a little broken lol
26:13 Molten duplication you just mentioned ;)
Ashroot animist is good with calamity, actually lethal
Ashroot Animist paired with Xenagos, God of Revels
I’m totaling going to try Fervent Champion and Leyline Axe in Pioneer
Not sure if you saw, but as of today we’re at 4 elf lords once foundations is released
"How can you abuse a four mana artifact on turn 0" should be the better question for Against the Odds.
I was so excited for foundations before they told me I was suppossed to play against spider man in standard
leyline Axe may make an appearance in mono green elves funnily enough 😅. turn 0 axe turn 1 mana dork turn 2 equip turn 3 play your elf lord suddenly youve got a big ole double striking mana dork that becomes even bigger as the game goes....does to removal....oh
To anybody who wants to meme, kemba is still and standard and auto equips leyline on turn two
Is it me, or is the new kallan a reference to rycroft from carnival row. He starts out in the army, becomes a detective and ends as a rogue
I can’t wait for them to put 4p commander on Arena
Howdy Sett probably you won't notice this but you should recheck some of the legality of commander mh3 cards on Arena on Goldfish site cuz they are not matching. (As in like Akroma's Will being legal when it isnt) I think the confusion cam from they adding the MH3 Commander Commanders which then someone on the crew thought "they are getting everything"
Is doubling szn a non-bo with impending counters? It’s not a may ability lol
I feel Kellan will be used in a delver style deck.
Wonder if they'll (re-)print some ninjas into foundations to make new Kaito viable.
Remember when cards that drew cards to generate advantage/replace themselves/thin the deck were good? Oh how times have changed. 😢
I’m so excited for this set. It feels like the last good set before wotc loses it’s mind fully
Scrawling crawler just sounds like I'm buying my opponent a phyrexian arena. Let it resolve all day long
