Mr Tedeschi lives this concerto… you can hear it in every note. My favorite recording has always been the Michaelangeli. This performance is that legendary performance’s equal.

This Stella performance brings to mind why I first fell in LOVE, LOVE, LOVE with this concerto. I am thoroughly convinced it is an ethereal distillation of his previous concertos. Upon my first hearing about thirty-five years ago I was struck by it’s almost bizarre departure from the spirit of his other three. But I was not at all put off in that it is the same genius who decided to venture into the undiscovered regions of his creative psyche. Of course he was right and through the process of heightening it’s power and dynamic by an improved arrangement perfected a concept that pulled together the excitement of a modern jazz idiom. It didn’t take long before it became my favorite of the four. The clincher for me is what I call “The Egyptian oasis theme” introduced by the piano in the first movement and glorified into a fabulous bouquet of sound later in the full orchestra. It is Rachmaninoff at his absolute best! The slow movement describes, perhaps a gorgeous resignation of yearning for the old Russia; his nostalgic, dreamlike exquisiteness of melody and harmonic daring takes us along on a forlorn journey and shows us a towering personality that managed to grow beyond a lost world. The rhythmic verve and vivaciousness of the finale always makes me feel breathless. It’s scintillating, scatting, and audacious scope is quite unlike anything else in the literature. I always look forward to it as a radiant confirmation of the power of this composer’s gift and his pianism that made him peerless among his colleagues. I almost think the slow movement begs to be fleshed out with lyrics, but that’s an altogether different subject. “Music expresses wordless odyssey’s.” PWG
This Concerto is "Not Easy at All" to play for pianist, as manner of fact, it is technically and Musically quite challenging, because of its sporadic and incoherent structure, yet , it is just like a Mozaic Artwork, when it is performed accordingly, it really conveys the composer's nostalgic reminiscence of his life, full of unpredictable memories. Mr. Tedeschi has done a Marvelous job in holding this work together, serving as a bridge between Rachmaninoff and the audience to take us to a time travel into many incidences happened in Rachmaninoff's life....the falling of Imperial Russia-WW1, exile from Mother Russia, coming to America, started his career from scratch...etc. There are many places with hauntingly beautiful melodies, reminding us of his different works. Thanks for posting. I enjoyed all three version, the 1926 original, 1928 revision and 1941 final version, each one has magical moments, which are irreplaceable !!! Thanks again!
A lot of what you wrote is alright, but nothing in this masterpiece reminds us of other works of his. None of his works do this. Each is an original. And there is most certainly not anything incoherent in this piece or anything Rachmaninoff composed. Milton Moore

Ended up here because ABC were playing Sicilienne (Dushkin) and I immediately thought of an exquisite performance of Simon Tedeschi and Sally Walker (flute) - and wanted to find Simon's TH-cam channel. Have now subscribed. This is an absolutely inspirational interpretation of this concerto! Everyone commenting here is unanimous in their agreement on the insightful delivery of this epic work.
Apologies for one more post… I’d be remiss without mentioning the the tremendous collaboration between pianist and orchestra. Every rubato a joy, and perfect connection. I love his orchestra.

Come to think about it: gonna learn to play the piano too. Watching Mr. Tedeschi doing his thing, it shouldn't be difficult at all.

That's because Simon -- with his years of training -- is a true artist and well-trained artists are trained to make it "look easy," even when it's not and regardless of how difficult the piece is. If you've never studied the piano before and unless you're a child prodigy, you won't be playing the Rachmaninov Fourth any time soon, I can guarantee that. Face facts. Or at least the superb way Simon plays it and the full version. There are three movements to this difficult concerto. Unless you're thinking of playing some elementary version with the "best-known melodies" in some tacky arrangement by some editor. It's always best to play the original, authentic version, even though Rachmaninov made revisions to this concerto (1926, 1928, 1941), this version -- the 1941 revision -- is the standard today. Simon's performance with the superb Sydney Symphony Orchestra is my favourite on YT.
Overshadowed by the 2nd and 3rd concertos, the 4th really deserves to be better known. I think it's just wild, I love it.
