- Khatia Buniatishvili, Neeme Järvi and the Verbier Festival Orchestra perform Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 at the Verbier Festival in 2011.
Russian composer Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873 - 1943) wrote his third Piano Concerto in 1909 at the Ivanovka country estate 550 kilometers south east of Moscow. Rachmaninoff spent the summer months here from 1890 until his emigration to the US in 1917. The three movements of the piece recall the structure of typical solo concerts of the Romantic era. Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30 was premiered by the New York Symphony Orchestra on November 28, 1909 in New York, conducted by Walter Damrosch. Rachmaninoff, who had been practicing the concert on a silent piano during his Atlantic voyage, played the solo part himself.
As a child, pianist Khatia Buniatishvili, born in 1987 in Tblisi, Georgia, was considered a wunderkind. She began to play the piano at the age of three and gave her first concert with the Tblisi concert orchestra at the age of six. International performances followed when she was ten. In 2008, she gave her US debut at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Since then, Buniatishvili has been regularly invited to many high-profile festivals and has given concerts in the world’s most renowned concert halls, for instance at Vienna’s Musikverein, at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and at the Berlin Philharmonic. She has won the highly respected Echo Classic Award twice.
The Verbier Festival is one of the most prestigious classical music events in the world. The quality of the participating artists as well as the originality of the programs have established the festival as a highlight of the music season. It takes place for two weeks in late July and early August in the mountain resort of Verbier, in Switzerland.

I've been playing piano, classically trained, for almost 30 years. I believe I have earned the right to have an opinion as to the "greatness" of a pianist. Khatia is an incredibly gifted and passionate pianist whose interpretation of Rach 3 is refreshing. People who criticize either do not truly know or understand music from the perspective of the pianist or they are just cruel and jealous of the talent others possess.
Many people may think people are merely born with a gift. Yes it's true there MUST be a certain amount of raw, natural talent involved - this is obvious - but what people don't see are the thousands and thousands of hours one practices to achieve greatness. It's a discipline most are never willing or capable of achieving. So a word to "critics"....once you are honestly able to say you spent your childhood, teen years, and many adult years hovering over a keyboard of other musical instrument, playing until your hands hurt, wanting to stop yet can't stop because the passion that compels you to play exceeds any physical pain or social price you pay for missing out on many things..hen you can have a platform and a right to criticize a true musician.
Until then, you need to be very careful. When one lays their hands on a musical instrument to play in front of others- they are actually laying their soul bare to show the world. It's a vulnerability few can ever understand and certainly something small minded people can not respect.
In addition to the soloist, the conductor and every one in the orchestra all put their efforts into learning and practice for many years. That's how much it takes to put out a performance like this.
Don't be silly - anyone can criticise another regardless of their 'qualifications'. Their criticism may not amount to much but they are entitled to express it just as you are entitled to respond.
agreed, these people are true artists, to compare, to critique, to denigrate those who stand up in front of the cameras and public to expose their talent, is in my view an insult. These are true passionate musicians; or better they weather the critique in the name of their passion. Maybe they are not the best in history, but they are following a passion. RESPECT please.

This has to be one of the most difficult piano pieces ever written, and Khatia plays with such natural talent I get chills every time watching her.
The little smiles she gets on her face throughout this performance are part of the reason I like her so much. Genuinely seems to enjoy playing and being there. If she's having such a great time, it's hard not to be drawn into that. Just wonderful.

Shes playing the main instrument in the orchestra, but and thats not normal for piano players … she plays it like shes a real part of the orchestra and not dominating it. for me one of the best piano players i ever heard :)

Yeah, the important thing in ossia cadenza seems to be the feeling for when to play with fury and when to play it gently. Khatia nailed it.
When you experience something like this you are witnessing the extreme limits of the human intellect in the combination of the soloist , the composer, the orchestra, the conductor and even the manufacturer of the piano. As an amateur musician most of my life, I can barely understand how someone can play the piano much less memorize such a complicated piece and play it with such passion. Bravo!
Well, I guess she'll do it just like I do when I learn the easy little scores I can play like the bad, pathetic amateur pianist that I am. That is: piece by piece, little by little 😅

I don't think Khatia would be able to teach geophysics or maths at the university tomorrow - we learn what we learn, and it is a kind of blessing that you can have such a nice hobby as an amateur piano player.
Her Ossia cadenza is up there with Yefim Bronfman's as one of the best ever. This is also one of the cleanest performances of the whole concerto I've ever heard.

Yefim Bronfman played it furiously enough in the heavier passages, but from the one recording I heard, he wasn't gentle enough in the happier passages. I'd compare her more to Arcadi Volodos or Olga Kern here :)
Don't let Khatia Buniatishvili's beauty and sensuality distract you from her world-class playing. I did hear some wrong notes in the cadenza, yet her dynamics and phrasing are second to none, and her overall shaping is not far from Rachmaninoff's own.

I am at a loss to understand how someone can by memory and feel with eyes closed play such complicated music. It's like she becomes Rachmaninoff herself and what he was feeling when he wrote this....Some sort of mystical channeling that only music can evoke. Not only beautiful, but seriously talented genius. Rach had suffered thumb distension when he composed this piece hence the wide chord movements. What is amazing is that Khatia is nimble enough to interpret No.3 with as much dexterity and emotion. A lifelong fan of both!!
The lady not only knows this piece (everything that she plays ) by heart, and therefore does not need the score in front of her, but she has the intensity of each note ingrained and it is all SO wonderful. I will always remain awed by Khatia and thank God for the day I happened to stumble onto her wonderful music. I am grateful to TH-cam, Neeme Jarvi and his orchestra, and of course to Ms Khatia Buniatishvilli.
Hate to burst your bubble, Bob, but all professional pianists who perform on stage, have the standard concerti under their fingers. Not knowing the score requires an explanation, typically. Scores are necessary for people playing work publicly for the first time, for concerti that are relatively rare, or some other circumstance. The movie would have you believe that David Helfgott was a savant. Performing pianists have practiced the standards since they were seven years old. And they may practice 6 hours a day. Horowitz was an exception: he hardly ever practiced. But for the most part, professional pianists, violinists, or whatever, know all their own standards, which Rach 3 is. Don't listen to me--look it up

I admire her from afar and know only what has been written about her. She has a heart for the very young and very old. Anyway, back to her music ... she always reflects the emotion and intensity of whatever score she plays. I'm no expert in the field of music, however I've seen this young woman adding well deserved dignity to Ivry Gitlis in his declining years. She has a real good heart for others, and I like that.

THE GUARDIAN classical music Wigmore Hall, London Andrew Clements Thursday 2 April 2015 12.28 BST "The jury is out whether Buniatishvili can ever be a serious artist after a shapeless Pictures at an Exhibition and Liszt as a low - grade circus act." ... Her programme - Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and a sequence of Liszt - was clearly designed for effect, and to have her fans on their feet and cheering at the end; predictably, they obliged. Pictures, though, had no shape at all, with the slower movements ponderously slow - Il Vecchio Castello was interminable - and faster ones lightning fast, so that they became trivialised, and Buniatishvili kicked up such a storm in The Hut on Fowl’s Legs that the dramatic effect of the segue into the final Great Gate of Kiev, one of the clinching moments in the whole work, was fatally undermined. That tendency to extremes - the thinking that ever faster, ever louder, is automatically the best way to go - ran through the Liszt pieces too. Three studies from different sets, La Leggierezza, Feux Follets and La Campanella, at least allowed everyone to admire the pearly evenness of Buniatishvili’s fingering, but apart from a rather unconvincing Liebesträume to begin, around them were pieces that encouraged her to be as noisy as possible: the first Mephisto Waltz (not insidious, just rowdy), the Grand Galop Chromatique (turned into a low-grade circus act) and the second Hungarian Rhapsody - played, of course, in Vladimir Horowitz’s version, which adds tweaks and further elaborations to Liszt’s original. The good news is that the piano survived it all intact; the bad is that on the question of whether Buniatishvili can ever be a serious artist, the jury is very much still out.

Khatia is my favorite pianist, I LOVE her recordings of Concerto 2 and 3 but you have to admit that Denis Matsuev is also excellent. I've been listening to concertos 2 and 3 for more than two years now, almost every day. I'll never be tired of these masterpieces

What I don't understand is this: How can a person memorize such a long work? Everyone has notes in front of them and everyone plays by looking at them, but only she plays from memory. Incredible!

As a pianist, I can tell you that looking for patterns when first learning a piece is key. Patterns and long hours of practice help us retain the music in our heads.

She is free to wear what she may and act as she wants so long as she can deliver the goods, And boy, does Khatia do just this. What an incredible performance. Pure mastery of her technique is simply not something one is born with,. She, and of course the conductor and orchestra, have invested a tremendous amount of hard work into preparing this concerto and it has certainly paid off. Thank you all for a divine concert.

When she plays the piano it seems she forgets herself and gets fully immersed in her art , and gifts us with her heavenly performance.
Khatia is so amazing, so incredibly talented , charming and beautiful I can not help but be smitten by her every single time I see her
It's not about perfection - it's virtually impossible to play this flawlessly.
It's about beauty and emotion, this is where music should lead us to - even more Rachmaninoff's. She belongs to this piece of music and acknowledges her role within the whole concert.
She refuses to be the lonely diva at the end with the applause. Instead, she grants first violin and maestro. She is there as part of the universe, a shiny star in the middle of nowhere

... Aber als Interpretin, man muss es wohl so deutlich schreiben und erklären, nervt sie oft und sehr.
Nicht, weil sie konkret schlecht spielen würde, dafür ist die Georgierin viel zu begabt und viel zu sehr eine Gefühlsriesin, beides schon ziemlich gute Voraussetzungen für ein Leben mit und für Musik. Sie weiß also, was sie tut und genau so, was sie lässt. Und wahrscheinlich noch viel besser, wie unmittelbar das auf ihre Fan-Gemeinde wirkt. Was tatsächlich und viel mehr so deutlich nervt, ist dieses Übermaß an gewollter, forcierter und unnötig verfremdender Eigenwilligkeit, mit der sie sich ihr jeweiliges Konzept-Repertoire zurechtschmust und manche wehrlose Stücke knietief ins Kitschige treibt. Oder andere, auch nicht schön, kurz und klein donnert ...

Absolute mastery of the famous and very difficult "cadence". The wonderful Khatia even allowed herself the luxury of watching the director while she performed it. He didn't notice. What a shame... Well done Miss Khatia, we love you!

never never ceases to amaze me with her playing, no matter the composer.....her control is beyond exquisite.
What I find totally compelling is her raw emotion, the depths of her pain, and the reverent joy and exhalation, just completely in the stratosphere, alone and completely in control... for me the most enduring of all is her sophistication, sensuality, confidence and command... Her performance takes me away to a happy place... bravo, bravo, bravo... enjoy... the peterman...

One of the best interpretations I've heard in a long time. Along with Rachmainoff or Horowitz themselves. This performance is amongst the stars, out of this world 🌎!!!!
This is indeed a very fine performance but for me it doesn't quite reach the heights of Yefim Bronfman with Valery Gergiev and the Vienna Phil or Alexander Gavrylyuk with Thomas Dausgaard and the BBCSSO. Both performances are on YT and well worth checking out. You can never have too many Rach 3s!

I love Khatia and her passion, her mastery and yet her seeming casualness. Her performances raise my spirits. The close and roving camera also enhances one's understanding of the complexity of Rachmaninov's piano concertos which is missed when only listened to. Thanks to DW for making this available. Of the many Khatia performances I've viewed on TH-cam, this one in my opinion is the most sensitively videoed and edited (even dealing with one difficult camera angle). The playing goes without saying.

This is the concerto for piano and orchestra that I love most in life. I must say that it is not easy to interpret it, since it is a work that requires a very high level of study for both the soloist, the conductor and the orchestra. In the world, this is one of the most difficult to perform, but the result is phenomenal, the pianist in this video performs it very well although she does it quite quickly.

For me, one of the most beautiful moments of this masterpiece is in the second movement where the piano and orchestra descend into a kind of chaos and then suddenly the piano emerges into a beautiful Db major theme of consolation (@18:58). It’s beautifully rendered here.
Oh holy sh...! This is my favorite concert for 25 years and I listen to it crying every time. I've heard many versions of this and my favorite was always Martha's but this Cadenza Ossia blew my mind. This caught me from the beginning and during the cadenza my body shook and I fell to the floor. This woman is not possible. I can't stop shaking. How is this possible?

Do you know this kind of fantasies when you imagine yourselves doing something absolutely brilliantly - like martial arts, sports or some performance? Well, touche, Khatia plays piano better than I can _imagine_ myself doing that.
Her charm is the icing on a very complex and extraordinary musical talent. Just finished listening to rendition of the previous Liszt. Her fingers travel the keyboard at light speed. I challenges the limit of what are the limits of speed, precision and musical expression.
Rach three is a giant challenge for only giants soloists facing. Brightfully it make us an opportunity to watch Buniatishvili. Beautiful, dressed to kill and talented as no one else.
The wonderful dryness of the acoustic..not to mention sensational playing from the orchestra work beautifully with Ms Buniatishvili's beautiful almost pedal-less articulation. Excellent sound, with much solid weight in the low brass and string basses.This is really a wonderful performance..in the most beautifully balanced way. The partnership of Meastro Järvi and the pianist is a joy. A no nonsense Ossia cadenza, with much propulsion, and less fiddly than many. I'll keep it short here. more maybe next time.This is very fine music making, and worth several visits back. Thanks for posting, DW.

Nicht, weil sie konkret schlecht spielen würde, dafür ist die Georgierin viel zu begabt und viel zu sehr eine Gefühlsriesin, beides schon ziemlich gute Voraussetzungen für ein Leben mit und für Musik. Sie weiß also, was sie tut und genau so, was sie lässt. Und wahrscheinlich noch viel besser, wie unmittelbar das auf ihre Fan-Gemeinde wirkt. Was tatsächlich und viel mehr so deutlich nervt, ist dieses Übermaß an gewollter, forcierter und unnötig verfremdender Eigenwilligkeit, mit der sie sich ihr jeweiliges Konzept-Repertoire zurechtschmust und manche wehrlose Stücke knietief ins Kitschige treibt. Oder andere, auch nicht schön, kurz und klein donnert ...

Camera angles did not do this pianist's work justice. I would have loved seeing her fingers dancing on the keys from just above her left shoulder vis basic piano concerto camera angle. Her facial expressions tho... 30+ years listening to Rachmaninov's work; her and Anna Fedorova are something else in the younger generation of players.

She could wear a t-shirt and leggings for all I care. It’s all about the music for me. The snootiness and snark about how “loud” she plays is telling of the bastions of classical players and their audiences, who seem to take one another way too seriously. She’s forgotten more than most will ever learn. And her passion for the pieces she chooses to entertain us with is unparalleled. An absolute genius in her own world. Instead of attempting to fault her for her individualism, we should be applauding her absolute mastery of the form. Bravo! But, what do I know? I’ve only learned enough to have played punk on guitar for decades now.

Few pieces of music feel like a purer distillation of emotion than this concerto, and what a magnificent performance by Buniatshvili and the Verbier Festival Orchestra. The precise articulation and passionate intensity are superb.

I see Lavrov is conducting. A truly multifaceted man.
It simply confounds me that a composer would actually pen so much ‘edge of impossible’ piano. It is easier for me to accept that one could learn and play so difficult and so enduring a display of fireworks than that anyone had the ideas in the first place. I know Rachmaninoff was a master, perhaps he was taunting the players of his time, but even so… whence comes this mind-blowing tsunami of notes?
I have recorded some legendary pianists playing Rachmaninoff and found myself counterintuitively being lulled into a dream state by the relentlessness, my mind numbed by a barrage.
And then there are the inevitable mistakes, dozens of them, uncountable, though Khatia knows them all. Where’s the fun in that? It is inevitable for any human to stumble when challenged to someone else’s limit page after page after page. I’m not entirely sure I like Rachmaninoff.
What I love about Khatia's performance is that it's not distracting to watch. Lang Lang sounds exceptional, but his performances overdo the facial expressions IMO. Khatia, on the other hand, knows when to accentuate certain phrases, and when to focus in on the technique. Let me know your thoughts as well!

As you said, it reminds us that humanity can produce things of the greatest beauty, and the lovely, graceful, elegant, and passionate Khatia just fills it with life and light.
