Adapted by Maximianno Cobra, from Shakespeare's "Timon of Athens", the film exposes the timeless challenge of social hypocrisy, disillusion and annihilation against the poetics of friendship, love, and beauty.
What pur pleasures to see and relearn history thru these movies 🎬 thank you ... I've seen this one read the book as well a number of times ... glad to have the opportunity to relive ...
I saw this on the BBC when it was first shown back in 1972/3.Ended up reading the book as it was being shown. Hopkins and Alan Dobie were great as Pierre and Andrei. A brilliant experience.
A big thankyou to the Shakespeare network team ! There is nothing quite like this anywhere else! I am loving the natural progression from Shakespeare to Greek theatre, and now to such a high quality version of Tolstoy! Antony Hopkins impeccably embodies Pierre here! If your team needs volunteers for any purpose, please contact me; I’ll be most happy to contribute to this noble project!!
My first exposure to War and Peace when it was shown on Masterpiece Theatre. Gave me the incentive to read the book the first time. I also have the DVD of this series but it is so handy to have it here. Well done!
Same here - I watched this when it was first on TV in the UK and then went off and read the book. In all honesty, I found the TV version to be much more enjoyable. Anthony Hopkins looks awfully young but then I suppose it was quite a few years ago.........
I remember watching this with my parents and siblings when it came out in 1972/73. I was only eight, but still enjoyed it. The later BBC adaption, from 2014 I think, over-simplified everything even though it was good to look at in terms of costumes and scenery. Back in the 1970s, viewers had longer attention-spans. I remember The Pallisers from 1974, another very long adaption of 19th century novels. I've yet to read "War and Peace" the book, but given how much I have been enjoying Dostoyevsky, Bulgakov and Solzhenitsyn in recent times, I'm sure I'll get round to it soon. Back in those days you'd often get Chekhov plays on TV and radio too, always interesting. Thanks for posting this. Anthony Hopkins was excellent. Faith Brook was a fine actress, but she never got much TV work.
I watched it when I was a young teenager and I loved it. Because of this I started reading the Russian classics. Still have the books. I remember the times I was totaly consumed by the stories leaving the ugly reality outside, even then, still now. It gave me the taste of history all my life. Greetings from Belgium.
Absolutely wonderful.. I've always been intimated by the length of 'War n Peace' and life just doesnt allow for the time to sit and read a 1200 page book.. This 1972 series is just perfect..
I never knew about this BBC vesrion! Very grearful to the channel for uploading it! Hopkins is brilliant as Pierre, I'm really impressed with his acting! To my suprise I liked Hopkins as Pierre even more than Bondarchuk in our Soviet movie. And I take my hat off to this version of the War and Peace, the atmosphere is very close to the book.

@@Philbert-s2cI’m a bit older, but even when young I loved quality shows..
It's by far the best version ever made. Anthony Hopkins and Alan Dobie are sublime.
