YES YES YES! Thank you for this. With every producer making tutorials about trap melodies and simple chords. We need someone like you whos actually knowledgeable on music and its theory. No one is teaching how to do that modern R&B sound, these soulful beautiful chords, Thank you so much
I’d say it’s in D minor as all chords fit into the key of D minor [D E F G A Bb C D) by using a mixture of the D harmonic minor scale (D E F G A Bb C#D), D melodic minor (D E F G A B C# D), and the D minor blues scale (D F G G# A C D) which are some of the basic scales used in R&B music. As you mentioned, You could also use the C major scale to improvise over this but really you would just be playing D Dorian scale (D E F G A B C D) which is the same notes as C major but starting on a D. Chord 1 can also be looked at as a rootless D minor9 Chord creating a perfect cadence.
Men i really love the way how you teach or show us how to play chord..I can't read notes, but i see how you play the chords and i can play it as well...because i always jam on my keyboards..and try different chords even if i don't know if i do it right but it sounds good...
Could you explain "how" the chord progression is built? While it's good to explain the chords themselves, it would be even more useful to explain how to construct a chord progression. For example, what is the tonal center, what are the chord substitutions and where those substitutions come from. Knowing the chords enables one to repeat it. Knowing how to construct a progression unlocks freedom to create.
Hey Mark, thanks for the feedback, I totally get what you're saying. However in all honesty, it's stuff I don't really know myself. This is a beat making channel first and foremost but I decided to share the little I do know around this stuff to help my audience as and where I can. I'll continue to study and increase my knowledge so that I'm able to improve these videos. For now, I'd advise people to check out other channels that are more focused on theory and go into depth, there's plenty out there. Again thanks for the feedback, it's something I need to aim for!
@Mark Davenport Fmaj7 is the I ( tonal centre ) - A7/b9 is V/vi ( Means dominant of Dm9, also known as secondary dominants) - Dm9 is vi - G#dim is tritone substitution of Dm9- G/A or A9sus4 is like an "Extension" of the following A7. That Means it leads smoothly into the A7 and the A7 is the V/vi, which is actually our second chord from the Progression, ( A7/b9 ) a secondary dominant. Typically, it should resolve to Dm9 like before BUT because Dm9 and Fmaj7 are about the Same from their respective notes, you can imply a Fmaj7 instead of Dm9.
@@johnnykirchens3692 or perhaps you can even think of Amaj and Cmaj as equivalent chords, so that the Amaj then implies the Cmaj which in return gives you the 2-5-1 turn around... G - C - F . but that's just me speculating.
@Stefan Guy I truly appreciate your candor. Thanks for posting. You don't really need the deep theory stuff to make good music. It mainly helps explain it's mechanics and discover you're options. Keep doing what you're doing and enjoy it above all else.
Wow, what a resourceful channel. I've recently been re-inspierd to make music. This is very helpful for someone like me who is not a music theory expert. Very very helpful
Really dope progression. I’ve learned in jazz(still a newbie), your key center can move as chord progress, modulation.. You can start in Dm then modulate to Am. I
I was like you three years ago and I decided to try to learn to play I would watch like five of these a day until I set my mind to do it I brought a seven dollar keyboard from the Salvation Army and I would take it out and practice a song until I could move from one chord to the next without messing up and that was three years ago.
nesta wylde. If you really want it you can do it I did make up your mind and start going to discount places look for a cheap keyboard 🎹 just incas e it just a fad or your music store start looking keep watching and say to yourself I wanna learn how to play! That’s what I did and how I can play 15 songs and still learning if you really really want it it’s yours!
It's DEFINITELY NO DOUBT WHATSOEVER in D. The A chord, in the end, screams "yo its been fun and all but take me home to D!!!". The Mode, however, is Dorian, that's why it contains all the notes of C major and A minor. its D Dorian, used a lot in jazz improv.
I'm a newbie when it comes to more advanced chord progressions, but for other newbies like me, if I may suggest, there is a simpler version of this chord progression that works very well: Fmaj7 A7b9 Dm7 E7. The E7 (first inversion) works really well in the last 4th chord, in my opinion it sounds fuller than the G#dim.
Had to subscribe! I hope you can share more videos like this in the future, helps me learn different chords that I can play on my midi keyboard. Thanks!
I think this is in the key of A minor, I know the chord isn't there, but the F7 chord at the beginnig doesn't sound so stable, plus we never have the dominant chord to it (C major). What we do have is the G#dim7 which can function as a dominant to A minor. Moreover it comes after the Dm9 chord, those 2 can function as sort of a cadence to A minor (the G# in the bass doesn't really make it a cadence but it can sound like one). Not only that, after the G#, we have A in the bass, so it almost resolves to the home key, but the upper voices already lead to the next chords.
That is crazy 😂, it was meant to be! Really glad to hear it. If you need a closer look at the chords I've created charts you can view on my blog 😃 music.stefanguy.com/her-type-chord-progression/
What key is this in? So I initially said that this is in the key of C. In the final edit however I cut that out as I wasn’t so sure. Turns out I uploaded the first draft with it still in 🙃. Either-way there’s some good debates as to what key this is in going on down in the comment section below. I was leaning towards C or F. Many are saying F which I now think to be correct. Music scholars assemble - leave your thoughts below as to help somebody else and myself. Like I said in one of the comments below, you’re not going to find the best music theory on this channel as this is a “beat making” channel first and foremost and my theory isn’t the greatest. I’m sharing the little I do know to help as and where I can. Mostly chord progressions I think sound good that can help ones production. For now at least. I won’t know all of the theory behind what I play but I’ll continue sharing what I think sounds good and strive to improve my theory so that I can share that too. Just to add I originally said C as I used the C major scale heavily in the track I made around this progression. The melody always plays a B as oppose to a Bb. And the b is played often. I may even post a video of me making the beat around this progression if people are interested. Anyways hope you enjoyed the video nonetheless!
@@TomRussle yeah that's what I thought too. A minor being the relative minor of C major. I tend to just use Major when naming keys as I always call the numbers in major to keep things simple.
Tom Russle fair enough. Playing in church we only ever called numbers in major or the relative major as the notes are exactly the same - there’s no need to define wether it’s major or minor as in some cases it really doesn’t matter. In my personal opinion. It’s just a point of reference. I thought that was the way the nashville number system worked but I’m obviously wrong.
As soon as you hit that 2nd chord I was like "oh yea thats HER" lol

Yeah those are the first three chords sound very much like “Focus” just transposed to a different key.

I never knew you could use A7B7 as a link chord to the D minor. I always used it for D major. Useful!!!!
why does his keyboard start on F it's making me uncomfortable
@Stephen Maxam lol
Lol
its a midi keyboard, it can start on any note and white keys can be any keys.
You could also start with a *G13 (leaving out the 3rd degree)* instead of the *F maj7*
So that would be *G, D, F, A, C, and E*
