Like this video for a part 2 where we’ll dive deeper into the 2-5-1 and R&B chords. Also I'd love to hear your feedback on how I can improve on this type of video and if you'd like more!
Major and Minor 7ths (inverted) will get you that classic, sexy RNB sound. 👍🏾 Add 9th’s / Rootless Voicings for Neo-Soul. I use 6-2-5-1 alot also. Today’s Trap style RnB uses more simpler movements... like a 1-4.
@Gonzalo Guerra A "1-4" movement is essentially playing the 1st and 4th chords of the chosen scale. For example, in C Major, you'd do a C Major (1) to F Major (4). Knowing the number system, it makes it much easier to learn all 12 keys. This is how you can start playing and breaking down RnB, Gospel, etc. It has helped me tremendously in making RnB beats. Today's RnB style (with the exception of artists like H.E.R.) use more simpler chord changes, compared to what guys like Bryan Michael Cox, DeVante Swing, Rodney Jerkins, Teddy Riley, etc would do.
this video is perfect for intermediate players who have more experience with chord inversions and feeling out what's going on. thank you, i will study this
I thought the video was the perfect length. Your delivery was excellent, the instructions were clear. You avoided 'rabbit trails' or trying to impress us with what you know. Few instructors can remember what it is like to 'not know' and they present information as if we as students have their knowledge. I'm grateful that you provided this video. I'll gladly subscribe and look forward to learning more. Thank you!
So glad I found this. Thanks for this tutorial! Eye opening on the 4-3-6 to the key change to F to land back on your 4 chord. Never thought of that before.
These are great! Please continue to keep doing them. Your pace is perfect. The flow is consistent. Visuals are easy to understand. Maybe not to people who don't have much theory under their belt but none the less the diagrams themselves are easy to stay caught up with as you are playing. I would like to throw in a suggestion of maybe also doing these videos for Neo Soul. Would love to see chord progressions for Neo Soul. Keep up the great work Stefan!
Very well done. Music theory that helps a beginner understand how chord progressions move. Love the way the basic chord progression actually starts on the IV and use a ii - V - I in a different key for a turn around or repeat of the chord progression. Great length for the tutorial too. Short, sweet and to the point. Guy, keep up the good work.
I never really understood how to use this progression, but seeing you use it not as the progression itself but to get back to the 1 at the end makes alot of sense.
I started music production about a month ago and this is honestly the most helpful video i have come across for learning RnB chord progressions. Thank you so much bro
This video explained to me something i have been wanting to learn more about for quite some time but i have never found any good tutorials..until now. This was really really helpful!! Thank you!
The song "I like it" from Debarge already use the last progression chord early 1980's, it's crazy to see in 2022 it's always been use it ! Great demo !
I got your chord progression midi kit the other day. Thank u so much for keeping them all in the key of C! You don't know how confused I would of been if they was all in different keys lol.
I’m a church musician I utilize the Nashville number system quite extensively tbh and the way I look at it is to always view the 1 as Major at all times. The 1 being a minor is a jazz/r&b thing I understand both ways but I only go there with the learned and intricate level players . Just my 2 cents nobody asked for but I think should be noted Nashville Number System folks who swear by that system ALWAYS view things from the 1-4-5 as major, 2-3-6 as minor and that 7 is a diminished at all times no flipping or changing. Other than that u gotta new sub here like the vibe of the channel (I live in Tennessee btw lol) carry on my guy💪🏾💯
Hey brother, I totally feel you. I also started playing in the church and I've mentioned this same thing in other videos and in the comment section and have gotten heat for it haha. To me it makes no sense having different numbers for major and minor when the music doesn't change. So we always viewed the 1 as Major too. C major or A minor, G major or E minor...the notes are the same lol. I've gone back to this approach in my videos now. But tend to have to explain why. Thanks for your 2 cents, it's appreciated, no-one else has come with this logic, even though to me it makes the most sense. Especially in a band setting and on a channel for music producers. Much love brother and thanks for the sub!
I swear I said...MY BODY... YOUR BODY...in my head Soon as I heard that. (Ciara song which is Think of you sampled) Its crazy what the ears never forget , well head but you know what I mean lol.
Great tutorial fam 💯.. Like it was perfect in my opinion. Most other tutorials on music theory and chord progressions are way too complicated and very hard to follow. You put it in such a simple way that I could easily go experiment and apply this in my own music. Please keep tutorials like this coming 😌🙏🏾
Really helpful for someone who is intermediate to advanced. But for a beginner I think it would a bit much to grasp.... which is why they should get your midi pack. 😅. Great video fam.
I would love for you to do more of these videos. Chord progressions, baselines and more music theory. And more in depth explanation for beginners like us. Thanks Stefan.
Yep you have! And you're the one that pushed me to do this video haha so thank you! And everyone that's liked this video can thank you too! More to come! And keep coming with the video ideas!
@@stefanguy Thanks so much brother :) I am sure many people need more videos like this 👌 I can only create nice chords in C and Am scale. I find it easier because they are not sharps/flats. I love the piano man I love how there's software aka Plugins or vsts to change the sound but alone its such a delicate satisfying sound. Favorite instrument by far.
This is an awesome video on chords. It should be noted though that 2-5-1 is in just about all western music. (Pop, classical, jazz, rnb, rock, so on and so on.) It’s all about the circle of fifths. The 2 chord is the 5 chord of the five chord, just in a minor state. That’s why 2 draws to 5 when you play it, and 5 draws to one.

Brilliant! Just realised that the F/E/Am/Gm/C/F/E/Am is the main sequence of Bill Withers's Just The Two of Us.
YEP! Love it!
I was just thinking naah how you gonna start a just the two of us tutorial and not go all in on it...
Damn this is really solid for learning more about chords. I didn’t even know how much I needed this tutorial
Thanks Ethan bro! Glad it helped man!
A 2 5 1 is also the main progression within jazz music as well, a minor 7 to dominate 7 to major 7
💯
