At 8:44 it looked like you might need some Senokot. I only mention it because the video was great and I don't want the constipation to stop you from playing (although it doesn't seem to impede your playing)...........I think I did hear someone say "When it comes to playing an instrument well you got to get the sh%t lockdown."..........so thanks for the upload.
You’re the goat man! I’ve been playing professionally all over the world because of you. My first piano lesson ever was studying one of your dvds 10yrs ago. Much respect ✊🏾
That face you make when you hit a sweet chord, which is ALL OF THEM!!! 💪🏽❤️ You are directly responsible for me learning so much new stuff. Now maybe SOME day I can make that “yeah I know I just played that chord” face someday !
Brother I just wanted to say thank you for your submission to God because personally I've been so blessed by it. As a gospel musician myself and now pastor your videos help me not only on a technical level but also spiritual level. Thank you brother. Thank you. God bless you and your family.
New to piano I'm 53, and I really enjoyed your lesson, it made more sense to me as I've been learning scales, and know I can see how you are using the notes in the chords in the scale, and it wS like a lightbulb coming on for me, really relaxed and so much fun, hope I've made sense and thankyou great video
Reading all these Positive comments just warms my Heart! We have a great amount of Respect for what You have taught us, and also, for what You have accomplished! Thanks for all that you do for this Community! Much Love, Abrazos!
My dude! I grew up watching you play chords on TH-cam. I was here before the grey hairs. I’m glad to see you still playing. It just goes to show your passion for your craft which is beautiful. I finally have a better understating for piano and can benefit from your videos even more now. Thank you for everything. Keep using your talents to praise the Lord.
LMAO. I was like is this the OG that taught me all them tips back in the day, but your comment validates my suspicion. Just got back into beat-making and feeling super inspired seeing this OG again, and like The Alchemist "heed the Omens' :)
Oh how i wish we had youtube when i was comin’ up ! (late 70s, thru the 80s) 😅 learning to play would have numerous advantages, these young folks are living in an amazing (albeit complicated) time !
I love how you go extra mile to say what key what finger... easy for one to understand thumbs up there. I'm just a beginner and I like the lesson thank you.
add some reverb, check the velocity settings of your midi controller or keyboard, practice slowly and calmly and you can do it too :P It'll sound a lot better as you practice, but a good word of advice is to practice without effects (to train pitch and spot inconsistencies/mistakes easier)
I'm glad to hear somebody knowledgeable say that neo soul chords can be all the notes in the scale. I wrote an arrangement where I actually DID NOT use one of the notes from the scale on each chord and then just played with the inversions. FAT chords for days!
I got so tired of the same diatonic chords I was playing. I play stacked chords all the time, but it's all improv and my brain seems to just want to play uninteresting sounding extended major harmonies; sometimes I add a note that changes it up, but then I can't recreate it. It's fun, but the structure isn't what I'm looking for, and it's frustrating when I can't hit the same "cool" chords consistently.. This video helped me so much and it literally changed my harmonic progressions. Practice makes progress! TY!
Jamaaal!!! Long time no see. You have no idea who I am, but I bought your videos some 10-15 years ago. You are the Wilt Chamberlain of online Gospel Keyboard Lessons. Love you man!
Jamal ! so good to see your face on youtube again. Missed your videos. Wish you post most videos w/ Arlene singing on top of your playing. At any rate - all the best to you and god bless.
Welcome back! We miss you a lot. An inspiration for neosoul, R&B and Gospel musicians. I'm from Brazil and I admire you and your work a lot. God bless you!🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🎹🎹🎹🔥🔥🔥
2:57 This ties in with a lesson Kevin Conley did about infinite chords. He was saying you could just play all the notes in the scale randomly and you'll be able to solo
Aww Jamal Hartwell. Remember back in the days you thought me di tones, tri tones, Minor elevenths the ones you called steroid chords, minor 7ths, circle of 5ths, relative minor trick,. I can picture Jason singing as you demonstrate those chords. That's like some 12 years ago. I love you man. U broadened my piano horizon. I loved the way you rolled over your left hand notes to layer the right hand chords. I held your DVDs dearly then. All I could think of then was to set up my keyz while I watch ur dvd. Thanks for being an inspiration and teacher to me. Yeah I was 17 then and I'm almost 30 now, I can see you getting Greys. Much love maestro ♥
I second that, he inspired me with his teachings when I was about 17 or 18 I’m in my 30s now I felt like I tapped into secret beautiful music and his chords were amazing. Very inspiring teacher thanks for everything .
THANK YOU, Jamal, for what you've done for the past decade plus...I started playing about 10-11 years ago, and you were one of my main inspirations. And your video a year about musicians receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost and fire really pricked my heart and I've been seeking Him to go deeper for a while now. God bless you!
Don't even play piano, but I stumbled across this gem of a video and subbed. I play guitar, but this might get me to buy a keyboard to diversify my playing. Appreciate the videos!
Jamal, what a legend! This is a huge shout out from Durban, South Africa. Your feel is amazing, and your approach to teaching is so unique, you bring complex concepts and break it down so well, making it practical!! Keep going brother, you are an inspiration and a legend! God bless you and your family!
Only lames would dislike this video...this man literally taught America before all these other guys came out. It was either gospel musicians or hear and play ✊🏾. Play on sir!!! 💯🎹🎶🎵🎼🙌🏾
Started learning watching Jamal in 2009/10 got a broken keyboard from my god bro just to play the notes with Jamal but couldn’t hear them til I got to church! Thanks for all the years of work!
I wish I could meet this OG. Coz every thing I know about music theory however limited was from watching this guys vids, and that is like 10+ years ago
Taking me back to those early “Peanuts” cartoons, w/ Vince Guaraldi - so smooth, lots of diminished, 9th, 11ths and augmented chords, as you say. Just ultimate chill. I’m a noodler aspiring to play piano proper. Thank you for this (and those awesome iOS pianos and synths) 🙏
I ve seen a great video with this guy many years ago... a funky jam session with tritone substitutions as major topic... it s still in my mind... I love this man, Jamal...
I still remember when I first ran into his website back in the days as a teenager. The rest is history for me. God bless you my brother you are a blessing to many!
Man your playing is just so tasty and mean. The thick chords but also the way they move together and those little rolls and transitions. So appreciate you puttin this up for no other reason except to help us. Go Jamal. Really appreciate it.
This is crazy ... I usually play 1 and 7 on my left for every chord. Now I need to play more on my left lol. I don't know why 23 disliked this video, haters. Keep doing what you doing Maestro Jamal.

More isn't always better... don't play the butter notes. Can you cover tritone substitution?

I’ve been a fan since 2005. Jamal is the OG. He is definitely the GOAT 🐐. He even got the grey hairs now.
Blessings bro!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾
Bro I hope you understand how tremendous your contribution to music is. So many musicians are where they are because of you. God Bless you man.
This guy is a legend of this. Have been watching over 10 years probably taught me a quarter of what I know.
disco-funk-soul the very best in Music!
As a begginer, who does his 2 5 1s with basic 7th chord inventions, this amazes me

Thanks so much, Jamal!! It's great to see you back! We need all the help we can get!!!
I love how you go extra mile to say what key what finger... easy for one to understand thumbs up there. I'm just a beginner and I like the lesson thank you.
bro him just playing the notes in the key at the beginning sounds better than literally anything I have made ever
add some reverb, check the velocity settings of your midi controller or keyboard, practice slowly and calmly and you can do it too :P It'll sound a lot better as you practice, but a good word of advice is to practice without effects (to train pitch and spot inconsistencies/mistakes easier)

I’m a drummer, leveling up my music theory knowledge by the way since a few years. This opened me a new, happy little universe. Thanks!
I respect and admire the talent. Thanks for this.
What is up with the thumbs down? There is so much beauty in all these notes. Haters. Gonna pray for y'all. The Word says I must.
They couldn't "stretch" to hit both notes at once

I love gospel musicians. Insanely talented, yet they come off as just messing around and having a good time. That's what jazz is about.
