      In classical music theory: Major-Minor in modern music the combination of the 2, is a good place to start. ii V (i or I) can be conceptualized in many ways. With exploration you will find so so many paths to take. Sangah will open doors, and the doors keep opening........ Appreciated is her talent!

      @@wally3608 in my mind, punk should always sound like jazz. The biggest takeaway for me was using inverted chords to give it that slanky sound. Even though i play in an abrasive band, i like to study all kinds of music, especially on instruments im a novice on. I just love expression of all types.

    Brilliant. I'm learning two hand standard voicings. I go around the circle of fifths in ii-V-I's. I like organizing the drill like this. And I need to close some gaps and do the ones that you taught. Then make up some more! What a great idea. Your teaching style is also lucid and engaging. I enjoy your videos.

  • @MrRickonia

    One thing I noticed about you, Sangah, is that you are a very giving person when it comes to sharing your techniques and tips. You do a great job of entertaining us with your awesome performances, and yet you are not too greedy to let us in on your little “methods” on how to be a better musician. Thank you for giving so freely to your viewers! That, is an honorable trait of yours, and we love it!!!
    I just realized one of the great benefits of your keyboard with LEDs…it helps the viewers to see what you are doing!! Brilliant! Did you plan that when you purchased that model?
    1,720 forms?!! WHEW!…I’m so glad you clarified that because I had paused your video and was diligently searching for the fifth form (j/k) when you set my mind at ease!! Now, I’m going to have a great weekend! Only four!! Haha!
    I do have a question for you, however. Besides being able to confidently play the Major and minor scales, what other rudiments or fundamentals are beneficial to know in order to help our learning progression? Is it safe to say finger training is a huge part of the learning? I guess there’s a mental process also, since fingers need clear direction in not only how, but also “what” to play, right? Perhaps a better way to ask my question is: Is there a particular music book, or book series you could recommend for your students? I only had two years of piano lessons in the second grade, and I never did my homework, so I wouldn’t mind starting from scratch if it will help to solidify the fundamentals I need to know.
    Thank you, again, Sangah, for such a WONDERFUL video!!

    • @SangahNoona
      @SangahNoona  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you for your awesome words!
      Well, actually I was thinking about that get rid of my keyboard because I don't really like it. The touch is too hard, and not sensitive enough for me. But if you say so, hmm... let me consider it. Haha
      If you want, I could make another video for understanding scales / dynamic practice, etc. Let me know if you are interested. I didn't learn things on books, so I don't have book recommendation. What's your musical goal?

    • @MrRickonia
      @MrRickonia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      YES!!! Pls do!!! Cannot talk now, but will give you my goals later! Thank you, Sangah!

    • @MrRickonia
      @MrRickonia 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SangahNoona, Hmmm....I should probably tell you my musical goals before I waste your time, so here they are:
      1) To learn how to play 1/10 th as well as you (because if I sound even 1/10 th as good as you, then I will have the motivation to continue raising the musical bar of excellence!)
      2) To learn how to play "properly" (or should I say "efficiently"?). What I mean by that is that I want to play using proper fingerings. I take lots of "short-cuts" on bass because I am self-taught. I always have to wonder how many bad habits I have learned so well that I'm not even aware I am doing it. Same with piano...I don't want to learn bad habits...a teacher would be nice, but I would like to challenge myself to learn without a teacher...only with a book, and perhaps a cyber teacher, such as TH-cam. Have you considered charging for cyber piano lessons? It probably has its pros and cons, but perhaps you could teach some of the basics, and just share your tips for a moderate fee??
      3) Scales...I know how important they are, but I want to play them properly...
      I guess that's the basic stuff. Oh, and I forgot one...
      4) how to use the pedals, and common mistakes that people make when using the pedals.
      And, while I'm searching for goals...last, but certainly not least,
      5) What type of cleaning solution is required to remove canine or feline saliva from keys? haha...J/K!!
      Seriously, I want to learn about the different types of beginner keyboards, and how they differ...what is most important in how the keys feel (weighted, vs non-weighted, for example, and everything that a beginner ought to know before buying a thousand dollar keyboard. My price range is probably somewhere between $200 and $500, but I could spend more once I am sure that I am progressing in my abilities.
      Thanks for your free advice, Sangah! You really should charge for it! :-)

You will honestly never make it in this business if you're lazy. interesting! its basically a system of thoroughly understanding the positions of those particular intervals in all of the scales and in a way is a short cut to playing in all of the scales as opposed to memorizing multiple scales and hoping to play in each. you're forcing yourself to memorize the scales by memorizing each "quadrant" of those chords so to speak. so instead of playing one scale up and down the piano you're playing up and down the scales with the 2 - 5 - 1 progression. it really is beautiful and "jazzy" haha. no wonder they teach this in college! thanks for sharing!

    This is definitely a new way of looking at chords for me. Usually I just do the rootless voicings (sometimes base chords if I'm sight reading) in the left hand and a melody line in the right, but using both hands to make those juicy chords is nice when you're comping or just adding something cool to your improve instead of just melody lines on chords and/or shells.

    I really like your way of practicing ii-V-I in descending whole note keys. Seems like that will be easier than the circle of fifths method that I've been struggling with so far.

    I found Sangah because of this video. I am forever grateful.

  • @maleake56
    @maleake56 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good lesson and very useful. That’s the way I learned the ii-V-I awhile back, though I also learned a variation with a 6/9 chord for the I chord. Either way, it’s a surprisingly beautiful chord sequence when played with jazzy voicings and good voice leading, as you have demonstrated here.
    What I learned, and I’m sure you know, but some others may not, is that if a player can get the ii-V-I "under the fingers" in all keys, that pattern (or sometimes just ii-V) often plays out in various keys within the same song, even though the song itself has never changed keys. Knowing that can help someone learn a song and find the chords much quicker if they can spot those patterns up front.
    And if we practice a lot, someday some of us might be fortunate enough to play and arrange almost as well as you, Sangah. But that’s a high mountain to climb. :)

    I went a long way with music (leranin' violin, playing in the orchestra, little bit piano - now I am a chor-singer and I am watching a lot of jazz (Wynton Marsalis and the JLCO, the Joan Chamorro group and his young talents) and now you: I think, I understood nearly 85% of your harmony-lesson ("understand what you play) and I am fascinated, that your kind of "happy playing" (sory for this short word) is really mind-based: You know, what you do. Thanks a lot, F.
