CLIP DESCRIPTION:
In its final moments, the predator detonates an explosive device which Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) must run from to survive.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) has a code of honor which he will not violate, even when his life depends on it. Paradoxically, his code of honor gives him the backbone to survive as a military special forces operative when he is sent on a covert mission to rescue another group which was sent in to assist some nefarious U.S. government plan in a Latin American country. Once there, he encounters an old army buddy (Carl Weathers) who has gotten too deep in the CIA's good graces for Dutch's comfort. When he and his team go into the jungle to rescue the others, they get involved in a pitched battle with local guerillas, but they are more than capable of besting these vicious fighters. However, not long after that, they encounter signs that the equally capable men they were sent to rescue were all killed unawares and in an unusually gruesome fashion. Given their training, it should have been impossible for anyone to best all of these commando warriors. Soon, the men from Dutch's own team get picked off one by one, as they grow aware that they are up against something uncanny, not of this world, something that is hunting them for sport. Why? Because their skills make them worthy opponents for the perfectly camouflaged Predator. This carefully paced action movie was given poor reviews by many movie critics, but was sufficiently satisfying for its (largely male) audiences that a successful sequel (Predator 2) was released in 1990.

When it said "what the hell are you?" it wasn't imitating Arnold. It was asking a genuine question. You can tell because it inflected on different words.

Don't forget that the laugh isn't just some random evil villain laugh. That's the laugh from Billy.
So this alien being who's killed your whole team in excessively violent means, then taunts you when you beat it by blowing up the whole jungle, while mimicking your now dead friends laugh. A laugh you've probably heard a bunch of times before and are familiar with, but now it's coming from this nightmarish monster who murdered your friend in a horrific fashion.

The creepiest thing about this scene is the Predator isn’t simply mimicking Dutch: *It’s asking him a rhetorical question.*

Man, these movies are an important pillar of my childhood, I have practically memorized them all (alien and predator) because of how many times I've watched them, and I had never undertood nor interpretate the question the predator made to Dutch till now. Reading your comment gave me goosebumps. Thank you.
What I really liked about this movie was that Arnold didn't kick the bad guy's ass and walk away with a witty punch line like most of his action films. He really didn't win in this movie, he just made it out alive. And it was a close call at that.

Indeed. He was the ultimate action hero at the time, but in Predator he's up against an opponent that is way stronger than him. He even has to be given advantages by the enemy to defeat it. No wonder it's sometimes considered a deconstruction of 1980's "muscle action".

It's not a playback of Billy's laugh, it's the Predator physically mocking it. If anything this scene shows he's good at mimicry, as he immediately repeats Dutch's line back at him.

Naturally. It was able to confuse Dillion by mimicking Mac as well. "Over here. Turn around. Anytime." That was the Predator, not it playing back the audio. It's a common hunting tactic. Mimic the call of prey to get it to come out.
They are physically capable of speaking our language but the structure of their throats are different than ours so it's difficult for them to speak English and it's unclear how much of our language they understand.

A lot of people are interpreting the predators laugh, so here's mine.
I believe the predator laughing isn't just him mimicking Billy but also showing how well he understands Mankind. Because with him blowing himself up, he leaves no trace of his existence other than Arnold's story. So he understands that he may have been beaten but nobody will ever know he was there or even believe Arnold's story. The predator understands what it means to have the last laugh and he's doing just that.
Predator may have died, but his memory will live on forever in Dutch's mind... Everytime he will take a drink, he will hear that laugh and that's truly terrifying!

This is inaccurate because Ana explains earlier in the film that they would discover their men skinned & much worse during the hottest times of the year.Also the Predator franchise goes back to stories of earlier in mankind history etc.Think about Predator 2 when the elder Predator tosses Glovers character the old pistol.😉

He understood humans could be dangerous thanks to guns and tools, but Dutch craftiness surprised even him to the point he fell right into his trap.

Even in an Alien language, everyone recognizes a bomb countdown
Can we just appreciate the clever storytelling right here? The way the movie told that the character still had a heart to let his enemy live, and the way the movie told that there was a bomb, all without using words. We only got to hear "what are you?" and that's just it. Amazing.
I don't think he let it live out of "heart" but rather morbid curiosity. I mean, if you had just bested an extremely dangerous enemy extraterrestrial that this world has never seen before, wouldn't a part of you want to know more about it while it's still breathing and conscious? Even perhaps against your better judgment?
He's mocking Dutch in a much more sophisticated way than most people

Predator is not of this world. So The Predator replies with a rhetorical
question. I'm surprised that most people never picked up on it. The
Predator has no interest in hunting people that can't fight back. He
only wants to hunt others like him. He does not see Dutch as an ordinary
human. He sees him as a Predator much like himself. Question: What the
hell are you? Response: What the hell are you? Implying they share much
more in common than Dutch could ever understand. This film was much more intelligent than most people give it credit for.

First time I watched this scene I got that RIGHT away. Tbh, I thought it was pretty obvious.
Good for you. I originally saw an alternate version of the film that was only released on VHS for small period of time wherein instead the Predator says "I am...I am..." The original theatrical version had the Predator ask "What the hell are you?" but for some reason the studio felt the line was too deep for mainstream audiences. After the film became more of a success the line was switched back. Now it's next to impossible to find the original VHS version wherein he asks "What the hell are you?" Predator went threw a bunch of rewriting. In fact the man who plays the character Rick Hawkins played by Shane Black was not even in the original script. He was actually brought in originally to do some re-writing but also ended up in the film. I give him the credit for the line.
That's b/c most people don't just assume that the Predator knows the difference between a rhetorical question and a normal one. Your theory only works if it actually learned to say those words earlier in the movie. There's absolutely no indication that it immediately deciphered what Dutch just said. Otherwise, it would speaking long English sentences by then. It was able to understand the purpose of Blain's laugh through observance, for example. Dutch could've said anything and it still would've mimicked him.

I normally despise bomb countdown scenes because it's cheap tension, but this movie did it right.
Especially because it took him a second to realize it was a bomb hed turned on. And by that point hed already lost valuable time

@@vihurah9554 My thoughts exactly. I find the last-minute reveal of a bomb in countdown mode to be the most effective in making a scene like that have you on the edge of your seat.
@@caitlinjane92 When I first saw this scene as a kid, I was rather surprised like Dutch that no matter what strange symbols were used; a countdown is a countdown. Oftentimes, that countdown preludes to a bomb going off.
Of course, it took me a few seconds to realize that, and afterwards, I love this scene even more today because it simply showed me and not tied me down with extra seconds of dialogue saying it was a bomb. Too many films have a habit of holding your hand just to explain what just happened or will happen.
I always believe the evil laugh gave it away to Dutch cause he didn't know it's a bomb until the Predator started to laugh

The Predator asks Arnold "What the hell are you?", activates a self-destruct countdown, and then begins laughing maniacally until Arnold barely escapes the ensuing blast. On first watch this scene gives the impression that the Predator is being vindictive and/or intends to kill Arnold with the blast. However, I think the Predator was trying to express mercy but was misunderstood.
The Predator's use of "language" consists of him repeating sounds he's heard the humans make in different contexts. Lets examine the contexts in which he heard both sounds he repeats in the climax:
What the hell are you?
The Predator heard this just moments prior, right after Arnold dropped the rock he was about to use to kill Pred. The Predator could reasonably have assumed that this sound is associated with the act of sparing an opponent. When he decides to activate his self destruct sequence, he attempts to warn Arnold so that he has time to get away. He tells Arnold "what the hell are you?" because he thinks its human for "Im sparing you"
Maniacal laughter
The Predator heard this sound much earlier in the movie, after Hawkins told a vulgar joke to Billy. But whats important (as far as The Predator can tell) is what Hawkins does during Billy's laughter: He walks away. So Pred observes this and thinks that laughing is associated with a human walking away.
The Predator's final words are merciful. Hes doing his best to say "Im sparing you, get out of here" using his limited exposure to human language
That is a very fascinating interpretation of this glorious scene, thank you for sharing. There's so many variables to consider in a contact between two individuals who are aliens to each other.

It's a wrong, and silly interpretation disguised as deep and "le genius". The Predator was laughing because he was going to have the last laugh, it's simple as that. Earlier, Hawkins doesn't walk away when Billy starts to laugh - he is already walking away before he laughs. So even the premise is wrong.
When the Predator says "What the hell are YOU?" it's his way of saying Arnold is like no human he has ever encountered. He is a predator on the same level as Predator himself.

I love the way the Predator says "What the hell are *_you?",_* the deep raspy tone sounds goosebumps-y and chilling. And it is also the very first time we ever hear a Predator speak English in his own actual voice.
What I've always loved about the first movie, probably more than anything, is that Dutch's story became something of a legend amongst military organizations across the world in the decades that followed. Its something we hear mentioned across the rest of the franchise. The Mercenary Commando who encountered a deadly alien in South America back in 1987.
Dutch’s story became a legend amongst the Predators as well. Following this hunt, they developed great respect for humans and felt they were worthy for their hunts. It was this particular hunt that set the events of the second movie in motion. The City Hunter was motivated to hunt humans himself after witnessing the Jungle Predator’s hunt.

It also made me think about how Dutch felt. Imagine having your whole platoon killed off, and hearing one of your dead friends/comrades laugh come out this freakin creature. After all he's been though and seen, I can only imagine what this would do to him psychologically.

Actually predator committed an honorable suicide. Arnold was about to deliver the final blow but chose not to. As to when the predator realizes Arnie won’t kill him it would disgrace the predator to not die honorably that is why he committed suicide for honor and so he or his tech would not be found.

So The Predator replies with a rhetorical question. Predators arent interested hunting humans unless they are soldiers/hunters like predator. And Arnie's character Dutch was a soldier. So predator saw Arnie as competitor or trophy.

Giving that the Predators are from another planet, I always thought that most of them didn't understand the human lenguage, at least not in the way we do. During the movie, we saw that the Predator observes and records Dutch's team while they do stuff, like when someone laugh or when they kill something. When Mac kills the scorpion and says ''anytime'', the Predator goes there when they'r all gone and grabes the dead scorpion while he repeats the same recorded line, ''anytime''. From there, I always had the theory that the predator didn't understand the human language, he asociated the phrase anytime with the Kill, or when Billy luaghted after they finished the job, he tooked like that's the way that humans behave when they complete the hunt.
Based on that, when Dutch says ''What the hell are you?'' when he won, the Yautja interpreted like that's what he should say when he defeated his enemy, so he replied the same and initiated his selfdestruct sequence, and then laughed like Billy when he finished the job.
Naw, dont forget before when The Predator was literally examining Dutch's skull to make sure he was human, before he took off his mask. He def was asking dutch back because dutch beat him.

One of the actors in the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (forget who exactly) was a Vietnam Vet, and he's said he would rather go through Vietnam again than re-shoot the movie's dinner scene.
"What the hell are you?" Whoever this Yautja was, likely battled Xenomorphs and goes on a hunting expedition on Earth like his ancestors before him and suddenly gets defeated by one soldier who used his ingenuity and skill as a warrior to do it!

I never thought of this but my wife said when the predator repeated the question, it was because he's a seasoned killer and had never been bested by anything so weak as a human. That's also why when he's got Dutch by the neck, he's inspecting his face. Looking at him like "what's different about this one?" My wife is smart❤👍

Whereas the Predator says "What the hell are *you*?" With a lot more emphasis on the 'you'; because he's literally questioning how Dutch could have him nearly beaten. A master hunter and predator, beaten by a regular human...
It wasn’t him laughing. Predator earlier in the movie recorded one of the hunters laughter. He then proceeds with playing it.
I think its a mix, the way his head moves like he's laughing makes me think he's using the others' laugh as a way to taunt

The Predator can understand and speak. It's not just imitating Arnold here, it's inflecting on different words.

It is just incredible how WELL this movie has aged. If you were to show this in theatres today it would still make crazy profits! It's just that kickass!

The predator is the best in this film and scene.We see it’s a honour bound species, targeting only the armed and worthy while leaving the weak and defenceless.We see it’s easily as smart as any human, we see it’s superhuman in terms of everything, Dutch is peak human yet to the predator it’s like throwing a doll around.We see it’s a amazing hunter, able to stalk and pick off people one by one as well as being extremely strong.And we see how fair it can be, it could easily kill Dutch with its blasters and blades but no, instead it decides to give him a fighting chance and weakens itself on purpose.And when it’s beaten, does it roar and thrash or make a last ditch attempt at grabbing and killing Dutch?No, like a true warrior it accepts it, then following tradition activates the bomb to ensure no trace of it is left.And then it laughs, both showing how smart and sentient it is because it is both mocking the fact Dutch asks it the predator what it is while he himself has managed to defeat it, and laighing at the knowledge a human managed to be its most challenging prey.
Prey wishes it could be this good.
And the way it's subtly done, if this was done today the Predator would roar at him like a maniac on acid instead of calmly activating the bomb and accepting it's fate. I loved Prey for what it is and being it's own movie, but do they really have to have a Predator in that roar everytime it's face is shown or gets close to someone. Two of the best scenes in the end fight for me are 1. when the Predator is kneeling down looking at Arnie through the knife trap, and makes a small grunt / hiss sound because it wants to get to him, then sees the knives. Imagine that scene done today. 2. When Arnie punches it and it just twitches it's eyebrow a bit then punches him back, again another scene that would be done over the top now, with the Predator being like a Lion with Rabies

I think the mimicry aspect is really interesting and I don't remember it being touched on much in later movies. It makes so much sense for a creature that has evolved as the ultimate predator to have exceptional vocalization abilities. He can probably mimic all kinds of different sounds. The evolution of speech was a huge part of early human evolution as well, we're better at this kind of stuff than most mammals.
I like to think only this predator could mimic without tech. It kind of makes sense. After all, there are some humans that can mimic almost perfectly. Like the one guy from Spaceballs lol.
Maybe the predators have some individuals that are really good at useless skills 😂.

I think the new Predator films fail to accentuate just how often and how skilled Yautja's are at studying and mimicking their prey.
The 1st movie gave Predatoryjd feeling of such a mysterious creature from another planet. They moved away from that in the new films cos this seems almost evil in his laugh.
