- Shopping Goodwill for clothes and refashions is not a new concept. But, did you know you can actually find fabric yardage there, too! Learn my best tips for shopping Goodwill for fabric as well as ideas for what you can use the thrifted fabric for!

So refreshing to see recycle concept. It is the time for it. One sewist must have showed 25 girts she got for Christmas. I think we need to go in the direction of less consumption. I buy things but we need to make an effort.
I find the best fabric from my local junk store and some cool vintage patterns for a dime. I found my Janome sewing machine at a yard sale for 20 bucks and it came with a case. I love hunting for sewing treasures!
Don't forget the Salvation Army thrift stores. I look there for sheets, curtains, pillowcases, etc. to make into dresses for the charity "Little Dresses for Africa".
I had a long internal argument with myself about ordering white linen online. I only thrift fabric. Later that same day a friend who knows I sew and make dresses, who is moving offered me two white linen curtains (Ikea, made in Russia) and the power of attraction lives on! I tell everyone I sew and make things ... eventually they bring you all kinds of things free! Loved seeing your new to you fabric!
I went to are goodwill in Bradenton, Florida the sheets were as expensive as if I went to a discount store it would be $14. For a set of full size sheets they were each sold separate. Our goodwill is so over priced. Just with in the last year they started putting colored tag 1/2. I try to shop the hospital thrift store or anyplace other then our Goodwill. You are lucky that your goodwill isn’t so expensive. We are lucky we have good yard sales even in the pandemic. Thank you for letting me vent about our goodwill.
Haha! When things open up again I’ll venture into other thrift stores to give you guys other options!
Goodwill, Salvation Army and flea markets are my go-to browsing stores.

I almost exclusively get my fabrics from thrift stores, as well as the vast majoity of my notions (buttons, zips, bias binding, etc). People can't believe my pretty dresses used to be second-hand bed sheets and it's an amazing feeling! And from time to time, I also find actual yardage of fabric too!

That blue stripe looks like a summer skirt to me! I bought a vintage Pendleton skirt with tons of pleats at Goodwill for $3. When I unpicked the pleats, it was 3 yards of super soft wool! Will become an Itch to stitch Causeway Bomber!

But, I did get a beautiful quilted cover for a large to king sized bed and it was only £3.00, which is a total bargain. And of course my husband went mad because he said I didn’t need it. thrifted fabric always gives me Scarlett O'Hara vibes when she wore the dress made out of the curtains, fabric is fabric and with the right application you've really given the finger to fast fashion and textile waste. Great video, and nice finds!
Here in Tucson, AZ we have a lot of estate sales! I buy tablecloths and great sheets! We also have a thrift store that has half price days! Recently I bought yards (yes,,, yards!!!) of wool for next to nothing. Like it was marked ... 3 yards for $2 and then I got half off!!! Last weekend I made a wool jacket (fully lined) and it cost $1.50!!!!! The wool was $1 and the lime green lining was $.50!!!!

Our stores are all closed due to covid restrictions. I'm hoping some people are doing clear outs so that when the stores do reopen there will be lots of fabric to source. I love finding the deals and unique choices.

Super nice pillow shams are great for summer tops, and really ncie sheets are aamazing for dresses and shirts! Just make sure you have a nice sharp needle since the sheeta are tightly woven the ncier they are.

Those are great buys. I love the striped fabric that you didn't love. I'd make a shirtdress out of it. Those curtains would also make awesome shopping bags. My local Goodwills aren't so great but I still go and look.

Yes! I just recently found a 100% pima cotton flat sheet queen sized in new condition at my local goodwill. So excited to make it into something. 😍

We were shopping at one of our Goodwills and they have 50% off a certain color tag every week. We were going in on Friday/Saturdays and the color of the week was slim. We learned that the color is for the week not the day and it starts on Sunday. Learn how your goodwill works to get the best stock at the best price.
And at ours, senior day is Tuesday. 👵

Couple days ago, I found a gorgeous XXL men's Hawaiian print shirt for 99¢ at Goodwill. Some of the button placket suffered from stress fractures, but there's easily enough fabric to make myself an incredible blouse.
I also look for shirts that have usable buttons. Some items that are ugly, worn, or stained have lovely buttons. My usual is 9 buttons for 99¢.

The cotton blue stripe that you are not in love with looks like it would be a nice weight for dish towels. Think of home decor uses for sturdy cotton fabrics, too. I love going to thrift stores for fabrics. Thanks for sharing your finds!

I often find actual fabric yardage at my local goodwill. I've built quite the beginner stash with it and I don't worry if my garments don't come out beautifully.
Great idea Lindsey. You scored big. I can never find anything good at my goodwills. I find some fabrics at yard orestate sales but not this year there wasn't very many because of Covid.
The Goodwill in my area raised their prices so much that I do not even go there anymore. There are other thrift stores near me that are much more reasonable. I think that Goodwill forgot that it is used stuff.
Your striped fabric will make great pyjama pants!
We don't have much in the way of thrift store etc. where I live but we do have a lot of farm sales and auctions. I'll have to try to make it to more of them this coming summer. It's a great way to buy linens by the box!

The cotton prints you don't care for would be great to do a DIY custom dye, sashiko or batik-style project to turn them into colors/patterns you love.

Find another goodwill! I drive 20 mins to get to my favorite one. 10 mins to the ok one. And positivity thinking, mkay?! :)
I buy fabric like this and patterns also. Got six new patterns last week, two for $.25. None had been cut and three were Vogues.
Curtain fabric would be great for purses
My Goodwill before I moved was like this in prices and first Saturday of the month everything was $0.99. I always felt so good buying items because I knew the money was going to help others who needed for example job training. Then I moved and the Goodwill prices here are so expensive!!! As an example sheets here are $10 to $15 each depending on size. Another item to watch for though if you find a Goodwill with reasonable prices is duvet covers.
Yes duvet covers have so much fabric! Hope you find a new source soon. Small local church sales or thrifts may be better than goodwill?
The first white sheer fabric is similar to a voile, rather than a muslin. The multi-stripe blue sheeting is more like a percale. Muslin is very specific in weight and weave. The Indian print curtain fabric is not an ikat. Ikat is specifically a type of fabric where the threads are dyed before weaving. It's very detailed, and the pattern shows once the fabric is woven. The curtain fabric is simply printed.
love this! I always am looking for patterns at Goodwill; I will have to keep my eye on the fabric potential, too! I do like to buy used leather goods (skirts, jackets, pants) when they are cheap for handcrafted clutches (Emmaline's Flora pattern is my fave) Great video- happy 2021!

In reference to previous video, I think you should try La Bella Donna for a cowl neck. I have made 3 with cowl and 2 of them out of sweater knit. Wearing them everyday this winter. It is not too baggy under arms.

I was always taught these stores (goodwill and salvation army) were for folks who couldn't afford to shop elsewhere. It always shocks me to hear so many shopping there frivolously. 😢
The money from things purchased at those stores are usually use to help people in need in the community.

So... the tour of each fabric was nice, but this video is titled "HOW I source fabric yardage from my Goodwill" not "WHAT I sourced from Goodwill. I look forward to a video that addresses HOW you obtained the fabric. Did you go to goodwills in nice neighborhoods or ones near churches? You mentioned several relevant questions, such as the best time of day to go to goodwill, but just told us to ask you directly instead of addressing it in the video? Ultimately, this video did not answer its prompt.
