I always tell my husband his self-control is his super power. We both were in the Army together when we first met and I have witness people say some nasty things about him and to him. And the way it rolled off his shoulders was very noble to me. Hence, why I married him! 😉

I like to remember a time when i was 100% in the wrong and the woman i exploded on responded in kindness and patience. I *melted*. I wrote her back (this was an email situation) and explained this was not like me and to please forgive me. I explained why i was so irrational and upset dealing with being a solo caregiver for my Alzheimer's mother and being at the end of my rope. I didn't mean to lash out, i was just so very tense and holding all my fears and anger inside for too long. This angel woman would have been in her right to tell me off. I deserved it. Instead we had a moment that will be eternal in my heart. So... be that woman. Assume the person being rude is dealing with something awful and it's not about you at all. show love and patience and grace. There is no tear-down that will ever feel as good as being the person who gave the grace someone else was desperate for.

I remember going through a pretty rough time in middle school (7th grade girls @ private school can be pretty vicious….no joke). The last thing my Mom would say as I got out of the car each morning (before, in my mind, facing the lions) was “kill ‘em with kindness.” I think this really speaks to the core message of your video here, in terms of taking the high road. I remember being shocked a few times at the reaction of a classmate (who said something unkind) when I made a kind reply. I think they were automatically ashamed because my response revealed to them the cruelty of their own remarks. As always, Mom knows best. ☺️

I woke up this morning to the quote, "Your ship comes in on a calm sea" floating through my sleepy thoughts. Then, as I was drinking my morning cup of coffee I read these timely words by AW Tozer. "All will be well. In a world like this tears have their therapeutic effects. Healing balm distilled from the garments of the enfolding Presence cures our ills before they become fatal. The knowledge that we are never alone calms the troubled sea of our lives and speaks peace to our soul."

Hi Jennifer , I really enjoyed this video. The quote which helps me when things get a big heated is " there is greater strength in silence" ☺️ don't you just love this. It's so true isn't it, how easy is it to retaliate & lower your self down to Thier level.....but how hard is it to remain silent. Very hard in my experience. But we grow & we learn.

I recently had a conversation with an older friend, and we talked about the journey of learning to not care what “little people” say. If we are trying our best to do right in God’s eyes, it’s easier to calmly ignore when someone disagrees with your actions. And if it’s any consolation - I have the nicest, sweetest family in the world and we still had moments of disagreements over the 3 weddings last year. 😆

This is a great video, I wish you were around 21 years ago. When I was living in Heidelberg Germany my husband was the BSB commander. There was another officer wife that said some horrible things about me and made my life unbearable. I was in tears all the time. My husband would say to me, you have to have a tougher skin and that was hard to do. All the officer's wives that she spoked to about me they never wanted to talk to me and I felt very alone. I did spoked to a few of my neighbors asking why and what she is saying about me, they never wanted to say because they told me everything she said about me wasn't even true. I guess they didn't want to hurt me even more. To this day, I still don't know what I did or say to make this person hate me so much. This bothered me for years because every time we moved to a new place, her husband was also stationed where we move to. I always ran into her and it was hard to move on and forget. She would continue talking about me to new people that she met so it was hard for me to go to any military events because she would already warp these new women's mind about me. I no longer care about this person, I haven't seen her in 13 years. All I can say is she is a mean woman and she will answer to God one day. This video is so spot on, I wish I met someone like you in my lifetime.

This video is SO needed right now!
I love the saying, “Take the High Road”. I actually want to make an art plaque with that in my home, because I read it in a book, *Parenting from the Inside Out: How a Deeper Self-Understand Can Help You Raise Children Who Thrive* by Daniel J Siegel and Mary Hartzell. In it they talk about “High Road functioning” and “Low Road functioning” in the brain.
*The High Road = A form of processing information that involves the higher, rational, reflective thought processes of the mind. High-road processing allows for mindfulness, flexibility in our responses, and an integrated sense of self-awareness. The high road involves the prefrontal cortex in its processes.*
*The Low Road = Low-mode processing involves the shutting down of the higher processes of the mind and leaves the individual in a state of intense emotions, impulsive reactions, rigid and repetitive responses, and lacking in self-reflection and the consideration of another’s point of view. Involvement of the prefrontal cortex is shut off when one is on the low road.*
I actually began crying when I realized how often I had been responding to my children with emotional intensity and unpredictability while in mom-burn-out and survival mode. Hence it is my greatest desire to transform myself into someone who can remain unbothered by triggers, and take *the High Road* in all my interactions. I am by nature a gentle, chill person, and never experienced true rage until I had children. I never knew how to process rage because I never had practice processing anything other than regular anger and frustration. But to truly get so angry that it’s a struggle to calm down... it wasn’t until I had kids that it was tested!
Two other books that have helped me are *Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff” and “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Children* ... they are huge helps!
Edit: I wasn’t sure whether to add this, but right now a huge inspiration to me for remaining unbothered, is actually Johnny Depp. 👀 Even in recordings he tries to remain calm and slow to wrath, or remove himself from contentious situations. That man has the patience of a saint.

    • @justynafletcher864
      @justynafletcher864 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This was super insightful! I too am normally a pretty relaxed personality but there’s just something about kids that pushes you to the absolute brink of your patience. 😅 And Johnny Depp is a huge inspiration in this regard!

My mom used these philosophies, although not in exactly those terms. She often said, when I complained about a school bully, "Rise above" or "Be the bigger person" She also reminded me to "Consider the source" and then would remind me that some folks had no "upbringing" and couldn't help being naughty. She would also say "They're just jealous!" All these Momisms have remained in my heart through the years. I loved your list, Jennifer, especially "None of these things move me." That's a keeper!

This is wonderful advice for dealing with the nitpickers in your life. Even if we don't respond negatively, their words can occupy our thoughts and have us believing erroneous things about ourselves. She is right, ending the effect of negative BS immediately, lets you get on with doing the good works of your life. I wish she had gone a bit more into forgiveness. Forgiving them immediately is not condoning them, it is releasing you from carrying around the burden of the other person's stupid actions or words. There is a place in life for righteous anger, but it is never expressed by babbling some sarcastic or punitive remark off the top of her your head.

My husband was a bit rebellious in his youth so he got a good amount of body tattoos, his tattoos doesn't fit his personality today, he's very intelligent, graceful & puts out a very calming vibe. Everyone loves him once they get past the shock factor of his tattoos. He gets the rudest comments & looks though, it bothers me more than it does to him. I asked him one day how he just stays so calm, his response "if they can just judge me by what I did to my skin then that shows me what kind of person they are & I don't have time for those people in my life". I'm still working on my response towards those kind of situations.

I used to be on an online forum (remember those?) where one of my favorite members' signature line was "Never choose to he annoyed. Choose to be amused."
He lived by those words; he had nothing but patience and gentleness for new forum members, and understanding for those who had allowed their feelings to get the best of them and were making heated comments. On the other hand, he never suffered fools at all, having a cutting but --still polite-- short response to forum members who were overstepping boundaries and saying things which were not against the rules but still very rude. I miss those forums, and that member, but I still remember his words. They are especially useful while traveling!
Thank you Jennifer for these videos, so many people out there seem to have forgotten how to be people during lockdown, and besides, it's so valuable to talk about this kind of thing, we're never too old for self awareness or for being deliberate about how we carry ourselves!

It's funny that this was on my feed this morning. While I was getting ready to make a right on a road, someone hit my car with their car from behind. I got out to check my bumper. She said, "I didn't hit you" and I said, "You sure did." She then took off. Fortunately my car has just a small scratch but people these days are off their rocker. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter. A car is just a thing and it's not worth the energy to be angry. Your video helped me gain perspective this morning. Thank you!

Such great tips! When you shared about being "magnanimous," it made me think of another word I love, and try to remember to be ~ *impervious*. The definition of impervious is: "incapable of being penetrated; incapable of being affected or disturbed [Think: 'This does not move me!' ;)]; not pervious/not admitting of entrance or passage through." It reminds me to uphold my own standard of behavior, no matter how those around me are acting! There is also a Bible verse that came to mind while watching this video. It's 2 Peter 2:19 - "Whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved." Do we want to be slaves to negative people or negative emotions? (No!) So let's try not to let people or circumstances overcome us to a point that it affects how we act. Thank you so much for these reminders!

We can’t have a refined culture without these practices. I think when we master our passions with God’s help as you describe, the effect on others can be winsome. I had to apologize to someone I got short with (a stranger who was incredibly rude towards me) and it had a humbling effect on us both. We actually shook hands!

This was excellent. I believe I need to watch this daily. I’ve had neighbour issues for a few years. I live in an apartment and live between people who are thoughtless. I did react angrily at the end of 2021, as I’d had enough. I agree that when we react we are then seen in the wrong. I hope it’s okay to mention a book that has helped me immensely with my own anger towards thoughtless (and narcissistic) people. It’s called, ‘The Dance of Anger’ by Harriet Lerner. An excellent read. Thank you once again for your tips on how to remain unbothered. P.S. I bought your mug a couple of years ago and I have two of your books. Thank you for all you do in helping us (me) be and remain classy 🦋
