Employees are not "used to" it, they simply have corporate rules not to interfere. Several employees of companies like this were fired for trying to stop shoplifters.

It’s a misdemeanor which is punishable by 6 months in jail, but the DA doesn’t like to prosecute such crimes so they negotiate with the criminals instead of punishing them

i have never voted before, cause i did a study during high school about the political system and saw many examples on how lobbying will just corrupt the system by greed. the current system is not run by the gov, but the top 1% that lobby the people into office. this is the root cause of the problem... the system itself!

However, as chief of police for SF, it is your job to advocate for more funding not sit in community meetings and said you felt our pain in our community. Police staffing is only part of the problem. Even when police arrest the criminals the DA and judges let them right back out. How many times would it take for you to see the criminal you chased down and had scuffle with get released out onto the street before you just stop trying?

Politicians keep saying "let's go after the fencing operations" when the crime is directly being done by foot soldiers in the store. Why not go after both ends of the snake!? These robbers aren't victims of some system. They're clearly not stealing because they're hungry or in need of life necessities. I worked at the Walgreens at 4th and Townsend for 7 years. We had our share of shoplifters but I don't ever recall it being this bad. The employees don't do anything because its company policy. If one of the shoplifters got hurt by an employee, the company would be found liable. That's always been BS in my opinion. They're really left with no choice but to sit back and watch it happen. The security guards aren't really much of a match because these shoplifters often travel in groups and the store only has one. Its just a sad thing to see.
Another choice the stores have is to raise prices on the people who don't steal. 🙃

Ive lived in the Bay Area for fifty years, there has never ever been crime this rampant, never had I seen a store close because of crime or safety concerns, now there are hundreds of closures and shorter hours, even with extensive door locks, security, security officers, of course its much worse now, seems like they are manipulating the city or police statistics
Staffing is not the answer. The SF PD would not respond to that kinda call even if it were staffed.
