I always attributed her loss of a limb to a job on earth. She was a youngster when kaien died. I figured she did a few missions things got bad. Especially with aizen.
I'm convinced that Kubo had far bigger plans for the four great noble houses at the start of this series then what actually ended up happening. It just seems that he went to great lengths to really set up the whole Kuchiki and Shiba clan rivalry (remember how Byakuya went from dismissive to crazed murderer within one second of hearing Ganju's name?) but it all just came to nothing.
I think so too. especially how bayakua reacted that there was a shiba in front of him showed that there was a lot of story behind it but nobody was told unfortunately.
I like how she represents the brash and rebellious fallen nobility who could care less about status and the Gotei 13 while still having helpful ties, sharing that with friend Yoruichi. The Shiba's fall certainly started when their ancestor refused to partake in what was essentially a coup to seize and create the worlds via subjugation of the Spirit King as a moral clause.
Ultimately, he still took part, just as the lone voice of objection and also out of concern for the Hollows. Also, will give him props for spending the rest of his life researching ways to replace the Soul King as penance.
To add to the idea of the Shiba controlling elements, remember when Isshin flicked his finger at Aizen and hit him with a burst of what seems to be just wind? 🤔
There was also a comment in TYBW when Rose used his bankai that Zanpaktou that control multiple elements is virtually unheard of so anything extraneous to that had to be a shinigami technique like how Hinamori uses her shikai to augment her kido or Rose used hypnosis. They might, as a whole, have elemental/nature based powers but might just manifest as a singular element, then using kido to perform other elemental attacks. Also, Shunko showed that shinigami had an elemental affinity as Yoruichi had wind, Soi Fon electric, and Yoruichi's brother had explosive (probably fire)
@@JoseSerrato0420 you mixed up Yoruichi and Soi fon. Soi fon had the wind. Yoruichi is the electric cat. Also, it begs the question: If the Shiba clan can control elements to an extent, then what is Ichigo's element? Ichigo also has the Shiba blood flowing in his reishi veins, aside from Blut Vein and hollow vessels.
@@GODOFAWSOMENESS1 leaning more on energy, since his Getsuga Tenshou can be modified. From a regular reishi-based slash, to a super-dense, black reishi that coats his body and his blade. There was also the Fullbring Getsuga Tenshou, which were spinning wheels of death, the yellow Getsuga Tenshou from the smaller Zangetsu, and Getsuga Jushishou. Finally, we have Gran Rey Cero, and Final Getsuga Tenshou. Yeah... It's definitely energy, or in Bleach's universe, reishi of different races.
It never occurred to me until you mentioned it but the soul King was apparently fascinated by Ichigo and perhaps it had something to do with him being a Shiba descendant il and the fact that the Shiba's were the only family that disagreed with his cruel sentence
@@MIGBMWLOVER well no, he saw an opportunity to find someone like him a Hybrid that belongs to everyside and yet is so set apart in his own class that he feels he can't have a friend. Basically it's the God parallel; God is so powerful probably the first hybrid that belongs to everyside and no side basically he is the impossible, the greatest paradox the ultimate contradiction revered as a messiah to one side, devil and evil to another or either apathetic, sympathetic, or empathetic to all sides. So he made all creation just to find someone to understand or bond with. Ironically the greatest sin to Bleach is similar but not the same to the crucifixion story literally gave his own life for the world to have it's balance and a way for souls to be saved and not be condemned to eternal torment or in Bleach's case Hollows being murdered and causing another great imbalance. Not to mention the SK gave himself up to this Pharise-...I mean Nobles to be given probably the worst punishment of their time...kinda sounds familiar huh?
I always figured that Kukaku's connection to Urahara was through his shop--that Yoruichi was able to come and go to the Soul Society and Kukaku was the point of contact on the spiritual side.
Hear me out.. The case for Zero Division KuKaku: First, what if Kukaku's "great contribution" to Soul Society was fireworks/pyrotechnics and the Flower Crane Cannon. The Cannon USED TO be the only way to go to the Soul King's Palace but she did something regarded as a betrayal of the Soul King/ Zero Division and all of the Shiba's were removed from Nobility. Why does no one in Soul Society talk about how the Shiba's fell from nobility? Because they don't really know what happened up in the Soul King's Palace. Second, the Zero Division all exhibit skills which are unique to themselves and don't fall into the class of Zanpakuto or Kido- Which could be the explanation for how the Flower Crane Cannon moves locations and for what her ritual launching was: an ability unique to her. Also, Ichibei says that the Ōken is their bones and shows his RIGHT ARM. Where did her arm go? They took back the Ōken when she was removed from the Zero Division.
This actually makes a lot of sense. Especially when Senjumaru’s biggest contribution was soul reaper clothes. It’s not a reach to think this invention could qualify her for Zero Division.

I love Kukaku. That wild attitude, that body, and the way she runs shit with everyone she interacts with is what got me. Really wish we would have seen more of her for sure. Great video again bro

Indeed. We definitely need a mini series that follows the Shibas especially their downfall. Their rebellious streak and altruism where certainly factors but the precise details would be very interesting.
Yes! A full Bleach data/lore book written by Kubo to fill in all the gaps and explain more of the things he didn't get to go super in-depth with would be amazing! I'm hoping we get some more of the lore explained if the Hell Arc actually gets continued too, but an encyclopedia of Bleach lore would be something I would absolutely be willing to shell out some money for, honestly. The closest thing we have right now the Klub Outside stuff where he answers some questions from time to time, but it is unfortunately restricted only to Japanese residents right now apparently -- otherwise I would definitely join and ask some questions in the hopes that he might pick one of them to answer.
I do find the Isshin connection odd for many reasons you stated. I mean it's cool him and Ichigo are Shiba's and I think Kubo had it in his mind the whole time by making Ichigo and Kaien near identical and the emphasis on Ichigo and Ganju's dynamic when they first met, immediately bickering like family. I think it was always part of Kubo's plan but somewhere along the path of actually revealing it he just couldn't find the time to add more clarification on things for one reason or another
Ichigo strongly resembling his cousin is something you would see irl. They're first cousins, meaning they share grandparents and about 12.5% of DNA. Of course, ichigo grows into the Isshin look later. So really kaien favored his uncle lol

About the whole Rukia and Ganju situation, I have always thought that he was just traumatized by the situation and him blaming her is just A coping mechanism
Bleach volume 9 was my true introduction to the series. I was in the 8th grade and let’s just say Kukaku’s appearance on the volume cover…. Caught my attention.
I read so many fanfictions where Orihime gives her her arm back, or even just paying for another one like Soi-Fon got... Yet she only gets a prosthetic arm in the Brave Souls game for Symmetry. She's also a cousin of Ichigo. Why isn't she more important. Well I guess Ichigo's sisters didn't get much screen time either but seriously, family is big in Asian culture, but Ichigo never goes 'hey Kukaku we're appearantly cousins' or anything.
Ichigo does not know that. He knows his dad was a captain and his mom was a quincy, but Isshin never directly stated to Ichigo that he's a Shiba. We just happen to find out through flashbacks.
I absolutely love her and I really hope we get to see more of her one day. There's actually plenty that could be done with her in relation to the Hell Arc if Kubo chose to do it. Hopefully he goes for it.
Honestly, the designs of the whole Shiba Clan have to be my favourite in the series. Kukaku, Ganju, Kaien, Isshin (and by extension Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu) all look awesome. They've all got that look of the Wild, but in a suitably noble way that sort of embodies freedom or liberty. Also, a little sidenote, since this is a vid on Kukaku, can we just appreciate the fact that Kubo has consistently included disabled characters in Bleach. From Kukaku to Tosen and Rintao (the deaf squad 7 member, if I'm remembering his name right?). Cool as hell.
I think Kukkaku wanted to protect Ganju from the difficult situation when Kaien was killed and she didn’t know how to handle it the way she believed Kaien would’ve. In a way, she tries to keep Ganju tough by being the rowdy big sister that will beat someone up if they insult her. Her attitude is protective and you can see it. It’s something all Shibas have: Isshin, Kaien, Kukkaku, Ganju and, by family extension, Ichigo. If you think about it, Isshin did the same with Ichigo; protect him from the difficult and complicated situation when Masaki was killed by Grand Fisher and never holding Ichigo responsible
Urahara Kisuke...I swear he’s the last of the unknown noble household. It would explain his ties with so many other nobles and access to so many resources. A shame kubo didn’t get the chance to really take his time during the serialization to flesh out the world he probably had in mind. So many ideas and characters that get a start but never finish.
That's a strong possibility. How else was a 'commoner' like him allowed to befriend and get close to the Shihouin princess and then serve alongside her?
@@manuelacosta9463 Because Yourichi never cared about class or title and did what she wanted. Remember Kisuke created an entire hidden underground playground for them so even if they weren't allowed to play together, which I doubt, they'd still be able to play in private.
@@MrGksarathy Actually looking back at the manga recently Tessai and Kiskue both lived in the Shihouin manor as children so it's possible, hard to say beyond the family adopted them
When I saw kukkaku for the first time my first immediate thought was " oh look , it's tatsuki , new and improved " like honestly kukkaku' s character feels like a thicc , badass version of tatsuki. With that being said , it's a damn shame she had so little screen time , you can just tell that she was a badass on the level of a captain . Can't believe ganju got more screen time than her , also I feel kubo should have used kukkau in the final Arc in the place of yushiro, so then we would have kukkau and yoruichi fighting alongside eachother. God and I thought ryuken was wasted .
They should have just scrapped Ganjus dumpy worthless ass as a character entirely and instead used Kukkaku in place of him in every instance in the story.
I never thought about Kukaku losing her hand to the cannon that makes the most sense and she probably keeps it like that as a reminder of what can happen if she’s not careful There’s a lot of ways to re-limb in bleach 😂
I always imagined that she never told Ganju the truth because she wanted to keep him away from the Shinigami. He looks like he was pretty young when their brother died, and didn't want to risk him trying to follow Kaien's footsteps.
I think Kubo's biggest failing as a writer is ''too many characters.'' Its funny to think that when we were introduced to Kukkaku the main character list was still just Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Uryu, Rukia and Mr Hat and Clogs. The Gotei-13 at this point were just villains. By the start of the Arrancar arc though... well, she wouldn't be the only character to get no panel time.
Well I'd say that there's no such as too many characters. Look at one piece and how its stories going. I will say that that Kubo does do that with forgetting characters
I never noticed (or just forgot) that she lost 1 arm. Losing arms really is trendy in Bleach. Also those scrolls at 19:15 are more like "The strong eat the weak/The weak are meat, the strong eat"
Recently did a rewatch of Bleach in preparation for new season and I have to say seeing Kukaku and Ganju and now knowing they are Ichigo’s family it lands different than it did before. In terms of design it’s also super apparent they both look like Ichigo and Ishin respectively. Obviously Kaien and Ichigo are near clones of each other but initially the community chalked that up to a thematic choice Kubo made or that maybe after he died he reincarnated into Ichigo. Not that they are actually related to one another.
Also the one of the positives I’ll give to the Bount arc is including Kukkaku and Ganju a bit more in it. Especially the hint that there’s a long history between Kukkaku and Urahara (I hope we get more on that in additional material.)
So my personal headcanon on the stone covering around the cannon is that it's meant to protect it from the elements when they're not using it. Big ass gun barrel jutting out of the ground is liable to rust, or water in the barrel could mess things up when it needs to be fired. So they just cover it up to keep it in working order.
Back before the completion of the TYBW Arc when the "Kukaku was a former member of the Zero Division" theory was popular, I always thought that if it was true (which I don't think it is, but I did, like you, like the theory at one point in time) that she didn't get removed from the Division because of the fall of the Shiba Clan or because she lost her arm. I actually thought back then that maybe her arm was intentionally severed to remove a piece of the Oken from her. But Kikaku really is a super interesting character with a fantastic design that I wish we would have seen more of and learned more about her and the Shiba Family and all of the things surrounding it (stuff with the cannon, how the Shibas fell from grace exactly, if Kukaku was a former Shinigami of some rank given her sword and kido ability, and generally just how they all relate) and definitely look forward to a video on the Shiba Clan! Great video as per usual though!
They wouldn't be Ichigo's step cousins they would be his first cousins they directly related to each other by blood. If Isshin is Kukaku's uncle that would make their father Isshin's brother making Ichigo and Kukaku first cousins not step cousins
Thank you SO much for doing a Kukkaku Shiba video. Her and Ganju (and Isshin and Karen for that matter) were always some of my favorite characters. They always had so much life when they were on the page and screen. I hope they get more screen time in the new anime seasons.
Excellent discussion as always!! The 4 Noble Houses were always so fascinating. I always imagined them competent with elemental Reiatsu outside of their Zanpakuto Element. Like they have their specialty like Kukaku's fire but I always imagined making a house or the big arms or cannon was pretty simple for Kukaku/Ganju kinda FMA style putting their hands on the ground & bam big rock arms. Man Bleach has so much material for more Turn Back the Pendulum Arcs. Kukaku's history/era could make a great one whether she is Yoruichi's age or Unohana's!

I’ve suspected that Kisuke and the Shibas had a long relationship like he had with the Shihouins. Somehow Kisuke was friendly with the heads of both the assassin clan and the most rebellious clan. And both held him in higher regards than each other. Maybe part of why the Shibas were allowed free reign in their exile has to do with Kisuke and yoruichi’s long friendship..?
there is a theory that kisuke is that he is from the remaining noble family (since he knew yoruichi from way back (as kids?) and also how similar he is to senjumaru(the fablic zero squad member)

RE her not telling Ganju the truth about Kaien and Rukia, to me this makes perfect sense. Ganju is headstrong and adored Kaien. He was likely also going to join the Shinigami just like his brother, and Kuukaku didn't want to lose him too. So, she held back the information. Let him hate the Shinigami, it kept him from joining them, and in her eyes, kept him alive.
Kukaku is cool and just like you said it's shocking that she appears only in 10 or so chapters. My theory why Kukaku was so willing to help Yoruichi and Urahara is because either they knew each other as kids and/or that Urahara told her what happened to Isshin. As for the the thing with Kaien, I think that Rukia behaved that way is because she was guilty and she wanted the Shibas to hate her. And I always though that Ukitake told Kukaku the truth about Kaien after Aizen disappeared. Because if he really told her a long time ago and she didn't tell Ganju then that's really sucky move from her. And as for the connection with the 0th Division; perhaps taking care of transport is Shiba's family responsibility. I mean the Kuchikis's responsibility is compiling and protecting the history of the Soul Society so it's possible that each of the high noble houses has some special responsibility perhaps related to the Soul King. And Shibas could very well take care of transporting people - e.g. new 0th Division members - to the Soul Palace.
I heard that Tsukishima and Ginjo end up living with kukakku in her residence. Was this because Tsukishima used his ability on her, Or did she actually trust them and let them live there without any tricks? I don’t feel like reading the novels but I was wondering about this.
I think that the nobility aspect is just a soul society dynamic and not a soul kings palace aspect, as they wouldn't care if the royal families were still on good terms so long as they could maintain the necessary mechanisms the zero division needs. The Shiba still provides Canon rides so they're probably taken care of, and protected by, the Zero Division and they're allowed to mess with the soul society as much as they want(within reason) so long as there's no one else that can make a gate to the soul palace. Kukaku didn't get in trouble after giving Ichigo and co. a ride to seireitei and even let Ganju go home asap (he was home faster than Rukia had time to sneak off and apologize to Kukaku.)
I remember watching the bount arc not knowing it was filler and being confused on why she didn't show up, little did I know that it wouldn't get any better.

I think she is familiar with Yoruichi & Kisuke because they are all nobles*, so they've all probably known each other since they were kids. But I can see your theory about kisuke helping the Shibas get out of the Seireitei being true either way *I believe the theory that Kisuke comes from the unnamed 5th Noble family. Only because it would solve this question, as well as, why both Urahara's background along with the background of the fifth Noble family, have yet to be expanded upon or even mentioned. But ultimately it's just a guess 🤷🏼♂️

Does anyone remember the times when there was a theory that Kukaku is a prior RG member who lost her hand as the Oken was taken from her. I think 13 blades further fired up this theory as well the fact her Canon is used to get to the RR. As per power I see her as somehow around Sasakibe lv. She used high level Kido and gives wibes of being strong.
As you said in the middle of the video how both her and Gangu had different relationships with Kaien and so she felt a certain way of dealing with his death and I think she understood. I believe is for Gangu to make peace with this death and the person who "saved" Kaien from that hollow.
The Ganju and Rukia thing always seen to me like a fake memory of young Ganju. Rukia probably got there complete destroyed with red eyes after crying her heart out, but Ganju as a kid could only see his dead brother body and the shinigami who kills it.
I think the reason SS allow Shiba Clan to still survive is their direct connection with the Soul King Palace. The Shiba Clan is the only Great Noble Family from among those Five Great Noble Houses with intricacy knowledge of transportation from SS to the SK Palace and they, apparently, possess the map (I assume for the Tenchuren to fly at the right trajectory upon launching to bypass the 72 layers). Without the Shiba Clan, there is no mean for transportation upwards (although I pretty confident certain people like Senjumaru or Urahara might know how to circumvent it). I like to think the Royal Guard might intervened by instructing SS to leave the Shiba Clan alone as they are not a threat.
Could you do a video on why there are clans? It's very confusing since as far as I'm aware there is no way to be born in the soul society. How are there families at all if they're all just souls without memory of their lives?
If I recall right, if you have enough spiritual power, you can have children. It's why so many shinigami are of noble lines, major and minor. It came up the Souls character book, I believe.
Without a doubt brosky! I always thought that with a woman who is undoubtedly skimmed over. Especially the level of respect she gets from captains as well as high ranking srs all around her.
Kukaku, Ichigo, and Kaien are the only three characters with that droopy eye design in all of Bleach. Cannot be a coincidence. Kubo teased Ichigo’s heritage from the beginning.
While this is just speculation, nobility is usually only nobility if it provides something to the Monarchy, in the case of the Shiba family, it may be transportation to the Royal Palace. It is most likely that a much older Shiba invented the cannon and passed down how to use it throughout generations. That may even be why Kukaku is the head of the Shiba family, since she knows how to use it.
IThe theme of the Shiba is not really them controlling elements, their theme is about dominion over the three realms of earth (Ganju), sea (Kaien), sky (Kukkaku) from Celtic mythology represented by the Great Triskele which inspired she Shiba family's spiral-shaped crest.
I’d love to see this character in the last arc!!!!!! Especially in a battle. I’d love the last arc to be a combination of all types of characters we’ve seen through the series vs hell. If possible
is it me or does it feel kinda obvious that they seem more like ninjas if anything from the way they dress weapons use the whole element stuff thats the vibe anyway (referring to how the shibas are now)
So about the whole front door thing, not going to Kukaku right away. It was Ichigo who approached the 'front door' as it were. That wasn't Yourichi (sp?) it was Strawberry blundering in.
It would be really cool if we got a light novel involving the shiba clan and their re-inegration to the sereite since ichigo now has deep ties with the most authoritive figures in the series.
I think they added a prosthetic arm because it made animation easier. They didn't have to put extra work into making sure she was actually moving and interacting with her environment with one arm

If Only Shonen Jump gave Tite Kubo enough time as they did One Piece. Might not have been as long as that story but there would've been a bit more dept into what make sense into some of the characters.
I would have loved to learn more about the different noble houses, their history etc. Kukaku is a great character right from the beginning and you want to know more about her! A prequel to Bleach about the Soul Society would be amazing!
I wonder if Kukaku was the head of the household before losing her arm and then it went to her vice captain brother who was weaker than she was when she had both arms, but became considered to be more whole and have more potential after she lost her arm. Even though he's the older brother and you'd think it'd go to him first, if she was more powerful from a young age, it could be that she was far stronger than him, as all of them are likely to be around 100 years old or more considering how slowly bodies age in soul society. Maybe she reached Captain level strength 50 years ago but then lost her arm in a battle as a soul reaper, but was kicked out after losing her arm, building some of that animosity towards the soul reapers that their family has
Always felt like Kukaku and Ganju would have helped durring the Hueco Mundo part of the Arrancar arc. Seems like if they were involved in the Aaraniero part of the story along with Rukia it would have been even more dramatic.
I think kukaku can just walk in whenever she wants to the soul society. She probably coukd have walked them in. That might have been yuraichis idwa initialy, and kukaku was just "nah, im gonna fire you in. Dont get to use the cannon enough"
if Kukaku is saying Ishin is her uncle then that makes her and Ichigo cousins, her dad and ishin are brothers, which would mean she's not older than Ichigo's dad, as a matter of fact that makes her younger than Ishin.
at 29:30 or so, when you say that ganju saw rukia drag kaiens corpse. My head cannon was that Aizen prob had something to do with that (you know like how he faked his death) since he was the one who also made the hollow that ended up killing kaien.
What if Isshin is not regarded as highly as Kaien by Kukaku and Ganju is because of his sudden disappearance from soul society without an explanation. He had a pretty aloof carefree attitude so they perhaps didn't think it was for a noble self-sacrificing reason. Even if they didn't believe what soul society said the reason was and Urahara explained the situation to them it doesn't seem like they were ever in contact with each other. I think they did recognise Ichigo's likeness with Kaien but gave him tough love because he reminded them so much of Kaien but he was still young and lacking in a lot of things and because he did not recognise them despite being family, so maybe thinking it was a light snub by Isshin by being lazy and not teaching him about their clan, they jokingly took it out on Ichigo. I think Kukaku recognised Ichigo immediately or was told beforehand by Yoruichi and Ganju perhaps didn't recognise him or want to accept it at first because Kaien was held in such high regard by him and Ichigo was a rude kid from his first impression. Their dislike of Soul reapers could stem from them distrusting the organisation that led to the death/disappearance of 2 beloved family members. They might have theorised that the Shiba clan had been targeted as a way of removing them completely because both Kaien and Isshin's circumstances were suspicious and without evidence.
Maybe the Shiba canon was considered at some point to be the "contribution" to SS needed to be part of the zero division, but the Shiba clan being "people" peoples, refused that honor to be part of zero division, with the fine prints about the zero division using their services at will if needed. Or maybe Kubo just needed some excuse of transportation that would not be accessible to all, and just thought: "hey you know what would be neat to use? A big canon to freak out Ichigo and friends for comic relief, and ive got just the thing"
I dont think she has to be capt lvl. Not every spirt is a soul reaper. Byakuya says only every 100 years a member of the noble family achieves bankia. Which means there are prob tons of super rich family members that arent apart of the gotei. Central 46 isnt a soul reaper organization. Nobility are important people in charge. Soul reapers are the military. Ya some noble become important member of military but that would be the exception not really the rule. No different than super rich powerful family in the real world.

I'm convinced that Kubo had far bigger plans for the four great noble houses at the start of this series then what actually ended up happening. It just seems that he went to great lengths to really set up the whole Kuchiki and Shiba clan rivalry (remember how Byakuya went from dismissive to crazed murderer within one second of hearing Ganju's name?) but it all just came to nothing.
I think so too. especially how bayakua reacted that there was a shiba in front of him showed that there was a lot of story behind it but nobody was told unfortunately.

I like how she represents the brash and rebellious fallen nobility who could care less about status and the Gotei 13 while still having helpful ties, sharing that with friend Yoruichi. The Shiba's fall certainly started when their ancestor refused to partake in what was essentially a coup to seize and create the worlds via subjugation of the Spirit King as a moral clause.
Ultimately, he still took part, just as the lone voice of objection and also out of concern for the Hollows. Also, will give him props for spending the rest of his life researching ways to replace the Soul King as penance.
To add to the idea of the Shiba controlling elements, remember when Isshin flicked his finger at Aizen and hit him with a burst of what seems to be just wind? 🤔
Isshin can only control fire. It was displayed with his zanpakutou release, Engetsu. Literal translation to "Flame Cutter".
There was also a comment in TYBW when Rose used his bankai that Zanpaktou that control multiple elements is virtually unheard of so anything extraneous to that had to be a shinigami technique like how Hinamori uses her shikai to augment her kido or Rose used hypnosis. They might, as a whole, have elemental/nature based powers but might just manifest as a singular element, then using kido to perform other elemental attacks. Also, Shunko showed that shinigami had an elemental affinity as Yoruichi had wind, Soi Fon electric, and Yoruichi's brother had explosive (probably fire)

There was also the Fullbring Getsuga Tenshou, which were spinning wheels of death, the yellow Getsuga Tenshou from the smaller Zangetsu, and Getsuga Jushishou. Finally, we have Gran Rey Cero, and Final Getsuga Tenshou. Yeah... It's definitely energy, or in Bleach's universe, reishi of different races.

I always figured that Kukaku's connection to Urahara was through his shop--that Yoruichi was able to come and go to the Soul Society and Kukaku was the point of contact on the spiritual side.
Hear me out.. The case for Zero Division KuKaku:
First, what if Kukaku's "great contribution" to Soul Society was fireworks/pyrotechnics and the Flower Crane Cannon.
The Cannon USED TO be the only way to go to the Soul King's Palace but she did something regarded as a betrayal of the Soul King/ Zero Division and all of the Shiba's were removed from Nobility.
Why does no one in Soul Society talk about how the Shiba's fell from nobility?
Because they don't really know what happened up in the Soul King's Palace.
Second, the Zero Division all exhibit skills which are unique to themselves and don't fall into the class of Zanpakuto or Kido-
Which could be the explanation for how the Flower Crane Cannon moves locations and for what her ritual launching was: an ability unique to her.
Also, Ichibei says that the Ōken is their bones and shows his RIGHT ARM.
Where did her arm go? They took back the Ōken when she was removed from the Zero Division.

Yes! A full Bleach data/lore book written by Kubo to fill in all the gaps and explain more of the things he didn't get to go super in-depth with would be amazing! I'm hoping we get some more of the lore explained if the Hell Arc actually gets continued too, but an encyclopedia of Bleach lore would be something I would absolutely be willing to shell out some money for, honestly. The closest thing we have right now the Klub Outside stuff where he answers some questions from time to time, but it is unfortunately restricted only to Japanese residents right now apparently -- otherwise I would definitely join and ask some questions in the hopes that he might pick one of them to answer.

I do find the Isshin connection odd for many reasons you stated. I mean it's cool him and Ichigo are Shiba's and I think Kubo had it in his mind the whole time by making Ichigo and Kaien near identical and the emphasis on Ichigo and Ganju's dynamic when they first met, immediately bickering like family. I think it was always part of Kubo's plan but somewhere along the path of actually revealing it he just couldn't find the time to add more clarification on things for one reason or another
Ichigo strongly resembling his cousin is something you would see irl. They're first cousins, meaning they share grandparents and about 12.5% of DNA. Of course, ichigo grows into the Isshin look later. So really kaien favored his uncle lol

I read so many fanfictions where Orihime gives her her arm back, or even just paying for another one like Soi-Fon got... Yet she only gets a prosthetic arm in the Brave Souls game for Symmetry. She's also a cousin of Ichigo. Why isn't she more important.
Well I guess Ichigo's sisters didn't get much screen time either but seriously, family is big in Asian culture, but Ichigo never goes 'hey Kukaku we're appearantly cousins' or anything.
Ichigo does not know that. He knows his dad was a captain and his mom was a quincy, but Isshin never directly stated to Ichigo that he's a Shiba. We just happen to find out through flashbacks.
She had a prosthetic arm in the anime as well.
I absolutely love her and I really hope we get to see more of her one day. There's actually plenty that could be done with her in relation to the Hell Arc if Kubo chose to do it. Hopefully he goes for it.

Honestly, the designs of the whole Shiba Clan have to be my favourite in the series. Kukaku, Ganju, Kaien, Isshin (and by extension Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu) all look awesome. They've all got that look of the Wild, but in a suitably noble way that sort of embodies freedom or liberty.
Also, a little sidenote, since this is a vid on Kukaku, can we just appreciate the fact that Kubo has consistently included disabled characters in Bleach. From Kukaku to Tosen and Rintao (the deaf squad 7 member, if I'm remembering his name right?). Cool as hell.
It's Atau Rindou, but yeah, Kubo's disabled representation is pretty neat, unlike his record on trans and lesbian representation.
I think Kukkaku wanted to protect Ganju from the difficult situation when Kaien was killed and she didn’t know how to handle it the way she believed Kaien would’ve. In a way, she tries to keep Ganju tough by being the rowdy big sister that will beat someone up if they insult her. Her attitude is protective and you can see it. It’s something all Shibas have: Isshin, Kaien, Kukkaku, Ganju and, by family extension, Ichigo.
If you think about it, Isshin did the same with Ichigo; protect him from the difficult and complicated situation when Masaki was killed by Grand Fisher and never holding Ichigo responsible
Ganju should have been either redesigned or scrapped totally
Urahara Kisuke...I swear he’s the last of the unknown noble household. It would explain his ties with so many other nobles and access to so many resources. A shame kubo didn’t get the chance to really take his time during the serialization to flesh out the world he probably had in mind. So many ideas and characters that get a start but never finish.

When I saw kukkaku for the first time my first immediate thought was " oh look , it's tatsuki , new and improved " like honestly kukkaku' s character feels like a thicc , badass version of tatsuki. With that being said , it's a damn shame she had so little screen time , you can just tell that she was a badass on the level of a captain . Can't believe ganju got more screen time than her , also I feel kubo should have used kukkau in the final Arc in the place of yushiro, so then we would have kukkau and yoruichi fighting alongside eachother. God and I thought ryuken was wasted .

I always imagined that she never told Ganju the truth because she wanted to keep him away from the Shinigami. He looks like he was pretty young when their brother died, and didn't want to risk him trying to follow Kaien's footsteps.
I think Kubo's biggest failing as a writer is ''too many characters.'' Its funny to think that when we were introduced to Kukkaku the main character list was still just Ichigo, Orihime, Chad, Uryu, Rukia and Mr Hat and Clogs. The Gotei-13 at this point were just villains. By the start of the Arrancar arc though... well, she wouldn't be the only character to get no panel time.

Recently did a rewatch of Bleach in preparation for new season and I have to say seeing Kukaku and Ganju and now knowing they are Ichigo’s family it lands different than it did before.
In terms of design it’s also super apparent they both look like Ichigo and Ishin respectively.
Obviously Kaien and Ichigo are near clones of each other but initially the community chalked that up to a thematic choice Kubo made or that maybe after he died he reincarnated into Ichigo.
Not that they are actually related to one another.

So my personal headcanon on the stone covering around the cannon is that it's meant to protect it from the elements when they're not using it. Big ass gun barrel jutting out of the ground is liable to rust, or water in the barrel could mess things up when it needs to be fired. So they just cover it up to keep it in working order.

Back before the completion of the TYBW Arc when the "Kukaku was a former member of the Zero Division" theory was popular, I always thought that if it was true (which I don't think it is, but I did, like you, like the theory at one point in time) that she didn't get removed from the Division because of the fall of the Shiba Clan or because she lost her arm. I actually thought back then that maybe her arm was intentionally severed to remove a piece of the Oken from her.
But Kikaku really is a super interesting character with a fantastic design that I wish we would have seen more of and learned more about her and the Shiba Family and all of the things surrounding it (stuff with the cannon, how the Shibas fell from grace exactly, if Kukaku was a former Shinigami of some rank given her sword and kido ability, and generally just how they all relate) and definitely look forward to a video on the Shiba Clan! Great video as per usual though!
They wouldn't be Ichigo's step cousins they would be his first cousins they directly related to each other by blood. If Isshin is Kukaku's uncle that would make their father Isshin's brother making Ichigo and Kukaku first cousins not step cousins
Thank you SO much for doing a Kukkaku Shiba video. Her and Ganju (and Isshin and Karen for that matter) were always some of my favorite characters. They always had so much life when they were on the page and screen. I hope they get more screen time in the new anime seasons.

The 4 Noble Houses were always so fascinating. I always imagined them competent with elemental Reiatsu outside of their Zanpakuto Element. Like they have their specialty like Kukaku's fire but I always imagined making a house or the big arms or cannon was pretty simple for Kukaku/Ganju kinda FMA style putting their hands on the ground & bam big rock arms. Man Bleach has so much material for more Turn Back the Pendulum Arcs. Kukaku's history/era could make a great one whether she is Yoruichi's age or Unohana's!

I’ve suspected that Kisuke and the Shibas had a long relationship like he had with the Shihouins. Somehow Kisuke was friendly with the heads of both the assassin clan and the most rebellious clan. And both held him in higher regards than each other. Maybe part of why the Shibas were allowed free reign in their exile has to do with Kisuke and yoruichi’s long friendship..?
there is a theory that kisuke is that he is from the remaining noble family (since he knew yoruichi from way back (as kids?) and also how similar he is to senjumaru(the fablic zero squad member)

RE her not telling Ganju the truth about Kaien and Rukia, to me this makes perfect sense.
Ganju is headstrong and adored Kaien. He was likely also going to join the Shinigami just like his brother, and Kuukaku didn't want to lose him too.
So, she held back the information.
Let him hate the Shinigami, it kept him from joining them, and in her eyes, kept him alive.
Kukaku is cool and just like you said it's shocking that she appears only in 10 or so chapters.
My theory why Kukaku was so willing to help Yoruichi and Urahara is because either they knew each other as kids and/or that Urahara told her what happened to Isshin.
As for the the thing with Kaien, I think that Rukia behaved that way is because she was guilty and she wanted the Shibas to hate her. And I always though that Ukitake told Kukaku the truth about Kaien after Aizen disappeared. Because if he really told her a long time ago and she didn't tell Ganju then that's really sucky move from her.
And as for the connection with the 0th Division; perhaps taking care of transport is Shiba's family responsibility. I mean the Kuchikis's responsibility is compiling and protecting the history of the Soul Society so it's possible that each of the high noble houses has some special responsibility perhaps related to the Soul King. And Shibas could very well take care of transporting people - e.g. new 0th Division members - to the Soul Palace.

I think that the nobility aspect is just a soul society dynamic and not a soul kings palace aspect, as they wouldn't care if the royal families were still on good terms so long as they could maintain the necessary mechanisms the zero division needs. The Shiba still provides Canon rides so they're probably taken care of, and protected by, the Zero Division and they're allowed to mess with the soul society as much as they want(within reason) so long as there's no one else that can make a gate to the soul palace. Kukaku didn't get in trouble after giving Ichigo and co. a ride to seireitei and even let Ganju go home asap (he was home faster than Rukia had time to sneak off and apologize to Kukaku.)
I remember watching the bount arc not knowing it was filler and being confused on why she didn't show up, little did I know that it wouldn't get any better.

I think she is familiar with Yoruichi & Kisuke because they are all nobles*, so they've all probably known each other since they were kids. But I can see your theory about kisuke helping the Shibas get out of the Seireitei being true either way
*I believe the theory that Kisuke comes from the unnamed 5th Noble family. Only because it would solve this question, as well as, why both Urahara's background along with the background of the fifth Noble family, have yet to be expanded upon or even mentioned. But ultimately it's just a guess 🤷🏼♂️

Does anyone remember the times when there was a theory that Kukaku is a prior RG member who lost her hand as the Oken was taken from her. I think 13 blades further fired up this theory as well the fact her Canon is used to get to the RR.
As per power I see her as somehow around Sasakibe lv. She used high level Kido and gives wibes of being strong.
As you said in the middle of the video how both her and Gangu had different relationships with Kaien and so she felt a certain way of dealing with his death and I think she understood. I believe is for Gangu to make peace with this death and the person who "saved" Kaien from that hollow.
I always saw Kukaku as an old mirror image of Karen (Ichigo Sister)
Kukaku is definitely one of my top 5 favorite characters. She makes such an impact in so few moments that you know she's a great character.

I agree that she owed Kisuke for helping either Isshin or helping them directly in relation to Isshin departure
The Ganju and Rukia thing always seen to me like a fake memory of young Ganju. Rukia probably got there complete destroyed with red eyes after crying her heart out, but Ganju as a kid could only see his dead brother body and the shinigami who kills it.
To add on. Maybe it wasn't his body she was dragging but Kaien's black robe. It would make a bit more sense.
Man just imagine if ichigo told her and ganju his dad's name before being a kurosaki XD
I think the reason SS allow Shiba Clan to still survive is their direct connection with the Soul King Palace. The Shiba Clan is the only Great Noble Family from among those Five Great Noble Houses with intricacy knowledge of transportation from SS to the SK Palace and they, apparently, possess the map (I assume for the Tenchuren to fly at the right trajectory upon launching to bypass the 72 layers). Without the Shiba Clan, there is no mean for transportation upwards (although I pretty confident certain people like Senjumaru or Urahara might know how to circumvent it). I like to think the Royal Guard might intervened by instructing SS to leave the Shiba Clan alone as they are not a threat.
You can really tell ichigo is a relative of the Shiba clan, I mean put orange hair on kaien and its basically ichigo!

Could you do a video on why there are clans? It's very confusing since as far as I'm aware there is no way to be born in the soul society. How are there families at all if they're all just souls without memory of their lives?
If I recall right, if you have enough spiritual power, you can have children. It's why so many shinigami are of noble lines, major and minor. It came up the Souls character book, I believe.
I am by no means a Bleach expert but i think as long as you have "spirit power" you can age and even have children in soul society.
If you cannot get pregnant in Soul Society then how did Rukia have Ichika?

Without a doubt brosky! I always thought that with a woman who is undoubtedly skimmed over. Especially the level of respect she gets from captains as well as high ranking srs all around her.
Kukaku, Ichigo, and Kaien are the only three characters with that droopy eye design in all of Bleach. Cannot be a coincidence. Kubo teased Ichigo’s heritage from the beginning.
While this is just speculation, nobility is usually only nobility if it provides something to the Monarchy, in the case of the Shiba family, it may be transportation to the Royal Palace. It is most likely that a much older Shiba invented the cannon and passed down how to use it throughout generations. That may even be why Kukaku is the head of the Shiba family, since she knows how to use it.
IThe theme of the Shiba is not really them controlling elements, their theme is about dominion over the three realms of earth (Ganju), sea (Kaien), sky (Kukkaku) from Celtic mythology represented by the Great Triskele which inspired she Shiba family's spiral-shaped crest.

I’d love to see this character in the last arc!!!!!! Especially in a battle. I’d love the last arc to be a combination of all types of characters we’ve seen through the series vs hell. If possible

So about the whole front door thing, not going to Kukaku right away. It was Ichigo who approached the 'front door' as it were. That wasn't Yourichi (sp?) it was Strawberry blundering in.
It would be really cool if we got a light novel involving the shiba clan and their re-inegration to the sereite since ichigo now has deep ties with the most authoritive figures in the series.

Kukaku was one of the first characters young boys really liked for all the different reasons than all the other characters before SS arc
I think they added a prosthetic arm because it made animation easier. They didn't have to put extra work into making sure she was actually moving and interacting with her environment with one arm

If Only Shonen Jump gave Tite Kubo enough time as they did One Piece. Might not have been as long as that story but there would've been a bit more dept into what make sense into some of the characters.
I would have loved to learn more about the different noble houses, their history etc.

I wonder if Kukaku was the head of the household before losing her arm and then it went to her vice captain brother who was weaker than she was when she had both arms, but became considered to be more whole and have more potential after she lost her arm. Even though he's the older brother and you'd think it'd go to him first, if she was more powerful from a young age, it could be that she was far stronger than him, as all of them are likely to be around 100 years old or more considering how slowly bodies age in soul society. Maybe she reached Captain level strength 50 years ago but then lost her arm in a battle as a soul reaper, but was kicked out after losing her arm, building some of that animosity towards the soul reapers that their family has
Always felt like Kukaku and Ganju would have helped durring the Hueco Mundo part of the Arrancar arc. Seems like if they were involved in the Aaraniero part of the story along with Rukia it would have been even more dramatic.
I think kukaku can just walk in whenever she wants to the soul society. She probably coukd have walked them in. That might have been yuraichis idwa initialy, and kukaku was just "nah, im gonna fire you in. Dont get to use the cannon enough"
if Kukaku is saying Ishin is her uncle then that makes her and Ichigo cousins, her dad and ishin are brothers, which would mean she's not older than Ichigo's dad, as a matter of fact that makes her younger than Ishin.

at 29:30 or so, when you say that ganju saw rukia drag kaiens corpse. My head cannon was that Aizen prob had something to do with that (you know like how he faked his death) since he was the one who also made the hollow that ended up killing kaien.
What if Isshin is not regarded as highly as Kaien by Kukaku and Ganju is because of his sudden disappearance from soul society without an explanation. He had a pretty aloof carefree attitude so they perhaps didn't think it was for a noble self-sacrificing reason. Even if they didn't believe what soul society said the reason was and Urahara explained the situation to them it doesn't seem like they were ever in contact with each other.
I think they did recognise Ichigo's likeness with Kaien but gave him tough love because he reminded them so much of Kaien but he was still young and lacking in a lot of things and because he did not recognise them despite being family, so maybe thinking it was a light snub by Isshin by being lazy and not teaching him about their clan, they jokingly took it out on Ichigo. I think Kukaku recognised Ichigo immediately or was told beforehand by Yoruichi and Ganju perhaps didn't recognise him or want to accept it at first because Kaien was held in such high regard by him and Ichigo was a rude kid from his first impression.
Their dislike of Soul reapers could stem from them distrusting the organisation that led to the death/disappearance of 2 beloved family members. They might have theorised that the Shiba clan had been targeted as a way of removing them completely because both Kaien and Isshin's circumstances were suspicious and without evidence.
Maybe the Shiba canon was considered at some point to be the "contribution" to SS needed to be part of the zero division, but the Shiba clan being "people" peoples, refused that honor to be part of zero division, with the fine prints about the zero division using their services at will if needed.
Or maybe Kubo just needed some excuse of transportation that would not be accessible to all, and just thought: "hey you know what would be neat to use? A big canon to freak out Ichigo and friends for comic relief, and ive got just the thing"
I think if Ishin is kukakus uncle then one of her parents is presumably Ishins sibling so kukaku kien and ganju are ichigos first cousins
I dont think she has to be capt lvl. Not every spirt is a soul reaper. Byakuya says only every 100 years a member of the noble family achieves bankia. Which means there are prob tons of super rich family members that arent apart of the gotei. Central 46 isnt a soul reaper organization. Nobility are important people in charge. Soul reapers are the military. Ya some noble become important member of military but that would be the exception not really the rule. No different than super rich powerful family in the real world.
