When I spoke in tongues it wasn't because I asked to, it was because I had perceived the presence of the Holy Spirit near me and just prayed for the Spirit to be in me. I hadn't been raised in a church so I no preconceived ideas about what salvation involved.
Once the Lord answered my fervent prayer and began filling me with the Holy Spirit. I was thanking Him for answering my prayer when the pastor told me to surrender my tongue to the Holy Spirit.
I stopped thanking Him opened my mouth a little bit and mumbled a little as I relaxed my tongue. Suddenly I felt control of my tongue seized and I began to fluently began to speak in what I found out was called " tongues".
The joy I felt was staggering. I felt as if I was half drunk I was so happy. Now I understood why pentecostals ran the aisles, danced, jumped up and down it was because the were so happy that they were " beside themselves" with joy.

David I really appreciate your balanced and down-to-earth approach to your subjects. I’ve been eating these up like popcorn.
I began speaking in tongues on my own as a young believer before (I believe) I had even read about it in the Bible and certainly hadn’t been taught about it. I remember not being sure exactly what was happening until I saw read about it in the Bible and the was like “Oh I guess that’s what I’m doing.)
What a wonderful gift. I love that the Spirit (who always knows what to pray) intercedes for me when I don’t know how (or even if I think I do.)Rom 8:26-27

My response *@Debbie Bramwell.. But where in the BIBLE does it say for you to just open your mouth and go? Where in the BIBLE does it tell anyone it's up to them to utilize their vocal cords and their mouth, where is this man getting his lies from. The real speaking in tongues is not identical to you stopping and speaking in your native language. this man is confused and spreading lies*
*@**7:45** He said the bible said THEY spoke in tongues ... he said THEY spoke with tongues as the Spirit gave utterance*
*He is a liar and the truth is not in him, I left the scripture below for everyone to see, it does NOT say THEY spoke in tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance. This is the same lie that Kenneth Hagin used to teach. When YOU do the speaking that is just YOU giving yourself utterance same as you would do in your native language, and you are NOT the Holy Spirit.*
Acts.2:[4] And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, *and* began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

I came across this video now after searching why can't I speak in tongues. I've been baptized in the spirit at 14 after my water baptism. Thinking back to it I can't quite remember if I was actually baptised in the spirit.
I have recently reconnected with this girl from my primary school days and her testimony touched me. It's been a couple of weeks and I've been so motivated to encounter God because of the conversations I have with her. I'm 22 years old and I'm hungry to feel the holy spirit. I know my life is far from perfect. I know I've been dealt a difficult hand early on. And I know I can make better decisions. I pray every day and speak with the Lord every day but I feel so distant from Him. I would love to speak in tongues. I want to turn away from my everyday sin and addictions and give my life to Jesus Christ. I've done so before but I feel I never grasped what it meant and never lived as if I did.
I'm crying because I struggle to overcome sinful urges knowing how wrong that specific deed is. I really want to turn my life around and oh how I long to live a more righteous life. I know typing all this in a TH-cam comment section won't change anything but if there's anyone who read to the end of my comment is there any advice you can give me please😭😭
I'm in a difficult place emotionally and I'm happy but there's a void. I want to be a vessel for Jesus

I can talk from my experience.
Be thankful for "small" things we all take for granted. Millions of people are right now hungry, begging for water, freezing, in a house made from mud. For years, I was only grateful for everything. I lost my job that day, I broke up with my girlfriend after years of a relationship. It doesn't matter if you have food, water, a roof above your head, phone, internet, etc. I never asked Him for anything since it seemed disrespectful, as He gave me so many "small" things, and I didn't want to ask for even more.
In the last two months, I finally started praying to receive the Holy Spirit, to fill this emptiness inside me. I was happy, but you feel inside of you that you are an empty shell without some fire or joy. It has been eight days since it happened. I wasn't praying when it happened; it occurred while I was working, and a song about Jesus's sacrifice played. Ten minutes after all the emotions and tears settled down, I was reborn.
Sincerity in your prayers amplifies as your desperation grows stronger.
I am not sure if this will help you, but maybe it will give you more strenght to continue and trust Him. Whenever it happens, it will be worth the wait. Trust me.

Hi Jarrod....I think the first thing you should know is that salvation is not about what you do,it's about what Jesus has already done. Rely on Jesus, don't rely on your own strength. If you keep your focus on your outside, your outside will control you,but if you focus on the inside, changing your mind and telling Jesus to reveal Himself to you, to take control of Your whole being, and leave it to Him,you will find that some things that had power over you just don't intice you anymore. Learn that it's about Jesus and that it is only by His Spirit that you can walk on a straight path. Only He gives you peace and joy and comfort and strength......and it is NEVER about your strength. Jesus loves you and nothing can separate you from His love. Also, find a pastor, a prophet, any man of God that will mentor you.....whether online or physically, it doesn't matter. Your soul needs to be fed by the word of God. The word of God is bread to your soul, and the entrance of God's word gives light. The word of God points you to Jesus and Jesus is the Prince of Peace. May the Holy Spirit give you understanding and wisdom that this helps you, in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen ❤

Bro, I didn't speak in tongues because I thought my tongue had to move by itself, and the spirit of God would move my mouth. I thought if I did it myself, it'd be considered fake because I'm moving my mouth myself, not God. So that's why I wouldn't do it because I didn't want to fake it . I've not spoken in tongues as far as im aware but once i woke up from sleep due to noise and it was me singing a song to God, i wish i wrote the words because i never heard it before or since.
My mouth was moving on its own and my voice was coming out, i just laid back and listened to myself gently singing, nothing was forced. Then it slowly fizzled out and i stopped singing and i fell asleep again and woke up in the morning having forgotten the words.
I dont know what that was but i know it happened and i understood what i was saying which is why i assume its not tongues as i am sure i was singing in english.
I also learned that night that as bad as i sing and as much as i dont like the sound of my voice, the God of the universe does like my voice.

The issue I’m having well actually 2.. is that I did learn how to speak in tongues about 9 or 10 months ago but 1) I don’t feel anything really special about it? I hear so many people say they get visions interpretations, revelations etc while praying in tongues but I don’t. I really don’t and it makes me wonder if I’m just making up the sounds (it seems unlikely because it’s pretty fluent) and it’s not really the Holy Spirit. 1. I received the ability to speak in tongues about 25 years ago. Initially it felt like it was coming from my belly. Every time after that no emotions/visions etc. Remember tongues is your heavenly language. You don’t get all emotional when having a short conversation with a friend on earth, it’s the same with God. But the longer you pray in tongues and the more you do it you will see a change. 2. The mind is unfruitful during this time as it doesn’t understand what you’re saying. You can help yourself focus on talking with your Father initially by playing instrumental worship music or looking at a Bible verse

Yes you can. Being filled with the Spirit is something you receive after being born again. Nowhere in scripture do you see where it says you have to be speaking in tongues or filled with the spirit to be born again but having the spirit and the evidence of speaking in tongues is a great tool to get you into the supernatural into the spirit. You can receive the infilling of the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues if you so desire. God doesn't force anything on us ( and that means salvation also). As a matter of fact, being born again is a prerequisite of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Or you can receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit when you get born again (I'm talking about at the same instance). Definitely not before. Why would God give an unbeliever the gift of the baptism of the Holy Spirit when they haven't yielded to him? To sum it all up, you can be born again without speaking in tongues. But it's a great gift and everyone should be seeking it. When you pray in tongues, you are praying the perfect will of God and you will pray for things that you don't even know that you need but the spirit knows. I could go on and on but I'm just going to stop here and I pray that this has helped you out some.

  • @aYahron

Speaking in tongues is just being able to speak with other languages the words of Yah, be it by the Holy Spirit, or by the ability to learn other languages. Languages/Tongues such as Greek, English, Hebrew, German, Spanish, Mandarin ect. The word Tongue is just another word for language in this application.
Scriptural evidence of the word Tongue being a actual language.
    The Syrian Tongue
Ezr 4:7 And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of their companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Syrian tongue, and interpreted in the Syrian tongue.
    The Chaldean Tongue
Dan 1:4 Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.
    The Hebrew Tongue
Joh 5:2 Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the Hebrew tongue Bethesda, having five porches.
Act 21:40 And when he had given him licence, Paul stood on the stairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great silence, he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, saying,
    The Hebrew and Greek Tongues
Rev 9:11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.
Again Tongues is just the ability to speak with other languages be it by the Ruach Ha Qodesh/Holy Spirit, or learned.
The biblical example of some people speaking in tongues is in Act Chapter 2, where the apostles had gather together for the feast of Pentecost. And on that day the Holy Spirit came in to interpret the words of the apostles to all the people that had gathered to also keep the feast of Pentecost that were from other countries.
The miraculous thing to note is that the apostles were speaking Hebrew, but the people that spoke other tongues heard the Apostles words in their own language where they were from.
Then the scriptures says the names of the countries where some of the attendees were from, and how the people listing were confounded/surprised. Act 2:5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
Act 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
And those attending said...Act 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
Where were theses people from that were listening to the Apostles? They where from...Act 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,
Act 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,
Act 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
The people from other countries said....we do hear them SPEAK IN OUR TONGUE the wonderful works of ELOHIM
    SPEAK IN OUR TONGUE
The Apostles were NOT speaking some unintelligible babel/Unknown tongue.
So you can see in Acts 2: 8 thru 11 the names of the Tongues the people heard the Apostles speaking in.
And besides, The Passage In 1 Corinthians 14, where most try to get there speaking in tongues/babel doctrine from, shows it is better to be able to prophesy than to speak with tongues, and that speaking in tongues is a sign not to them that believe but to them that believe not, and that prophesying is not for those that believe not, but it is for them that believe.
1Co 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Even those that so-call speak in tongues do not do it as the scriptures show it should be done, which says that those who speak in tongues are only suppose to do it if they have an interpreter. How many times have you seen anyone that speaks in so-called tongues having an interpret?
THE INSTRUCTIONS OF SPEAKING IN TONGUES
1Co 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
How many that speak in so-called tongues do it by two or three people?
How many that speak in so-called tongues has one of the two or three interpret?
Then the scriptures says this... 1Co 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
IF THERE BE NO INTERPRETER......LET HIM KEEP SILENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How many obey that rule?
The scriptures goes on to show...1Co 14:23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad?
1Co 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all:
    Paul Said...
1Co 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:
1Co 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
Paul said.. He would rather speak five WORDS with his understanding than 10,000 words in a unknown tongue.
This why Paul said that...1Co 14:4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.
Edifying the Church is what most important. Not speaking tongues.
Peace in the name of Yahusha/Jesus

I'm only 8 seconds in, but the premise seems to be, why can't you speak I tongues even though you want to. First, desire for a gift won't give you any gift, the Holy Spirit gives gifts according to His will. You've got whatever gift he gives you, and that's it. Second, tongues is declared to be the least of all gifts, but that's the one gift so many people want. I think it's because it's a audible / visible thing, and some people (but not all tongues speakers) need their faith boosted by some outward manifestation of spirituality. Third, tongues was for edification, but many people don't let that enter into the equation. They just do it, and they get a big emotional kick, and that's enough. Emotions are content-less and should never lead. Thought leads, emotion should always follow. Fourth, I believe tongues as a functioning gift (along with raising the dead, and some other gifts) has ceased since the Bible became complete. Others, such as pastor, helps, exhortation, etc still exist.
Tongues can't be proven to be real (at this point in history), but it IS possible to prove fakery. Every tongues speaking church, if they have a genuine desire for the truth above and beyond any desire for tongues, should try this: invite various people to speak or pray at your church. Only the pastor will know that the guest speaker(s) are speaking an actual language (Hebrew, Icelandic, Navajo or what have you) If the guest speaker says for example the pledge of allegiance in Navajo, but what he says is interpreted as something else, and nobody else has any idea it wasn't "tongues", you can know everybody is just playing around with gibberish, and have been fooling themselves. Because it can't be the Pledge of allegiance AND what other thing it was interpreted as. My guess is, the vast majority of tongues speaking churches would never dare take this test. First and foremost, people will feel incredibly stupid for babbling for so long when it was really nothing. Second, people WANT SO BAD, like doubting Thomas, to experience some outward sign that God is real. Others like to flout their spirituality. I think only a small fraction of tongues speakers ever stop, most are "trapped" in it due to their pride, or simply never (unlike the Bereans) check the Bible to see if what they're being taught is true. OK, now I'll press play and see what you have to say.
OK, I've watched. I want you to feel challenged to administer the test in my 2nd paragraph. This isn't "testing God", it's testing yourself, and / or others in your congregation (if you are a pastor).
By the way, I appreciate that you don't condemn non tongues speakers, and I don't condemn tongues speakers. What matters is whether or not we are in Christ, I am and I believe you are too...brother!

great post and nice name btw. I would just add that it is also impossible to prove fakery regarding "tongues" because the goalposts keep moving. Tongue speakers would never submit to your test. as you said. The only reason charismatics came up with the bizarre idea of a "personal prayer language: and an "angel language": is to guarantee that tongues can never be assessed rationally. Charismatic tongues are intentionally unfalsifiable and there is more evidence for Bigfoot, UFOs, Elvis and Lizard people than there is for "tongues".

1Cor. 13:8 says that the gift of tongues will cease. It is not determined in this verse when the exact period of time in the future it will cease. What is the main purpose of this gift. The purpose of this gift is to get the attention of the unbelieving Jews to hear the Gospel so that they will believe and be saved from the 5th cycle of divine discipline by God to Israel Lev. 26:26-34 which is dispersal of Jews to other nations. It was prophesied by Isaiah 28:11, clarified by Apostle Paul in 1 Cor. 14:21-22. It was expired in 70AD for the 5th cycle of divine discipline was imposed by God, national dispersal of Jews in this period, because the main purpose was already served. This gift is the least of all, why? It was mentioned in 1 Cor. 14:19 Paul would rather speak five words than ten thousand words that cannot be understood, the ratio would be 1:2000; 1 for prophecy and 2000 for speaking in tongues. Tongues was one of the ten gifts that expired and the other 9 expired because the Canon of Scripture, the Bible was completed approximately in 96AD. The book of 1 Cor. was written in 55AD, 15 years before the imposition of the 5th cycle of divine discipline in 70 AD (Lev. 26:26-34) and 15 years left for this gift to serve it's purpose to warn the Jews.
The purpose of this gift is a sign, sign for unbelieving Jews. Supposed a road is already closed, then no need to put a "slow down' or '20 kph speed limit" signage in the middle of that road for it has been closed. So no need anymore for the sign of tongues as warning because the people to benefit for the sign were dispersed to other nations since 70AD because they were reluctant to respond with the message of the sign.

It's simply a matter of not being afraid to play with the sounds of your language (or any others you may be familiar with).

God is not McDonald's. You can't just come to Him and order whatever spiritual gifts you want. He gifts believers as He sees fit and when He does so, He does it for a particular purpose that He has in mind. I don't know if at this time there are any people left who legitimately speak in tongues. I personally don't think so, but that's just me. As long as a person doesn't claim that it's a requirement for salvation, I can view that person as a true Christian and cordially agree to disagree. When we are in Heaven, both those who claim to speak in tongues and people like me who don't, God will let us know the truth of the matter.

I believe Gods Word says that , that gift was a sign for wayward nation of Israel .
    (Isaiah 28:11-12) KJV
    (1Cor. 14:21-22)
Happened only 3 times in the scriptures:
    Acts 2:4-9
    Acts 10:42-46
    Acts 19:3-7
    No more , it ceased
And they (the 11 apostle of Christ )spoke in their on every day language ( Galilean) on the day of Pentecost.
But the unsaved Jews from every nation under heaven listening , understood a language that they had never studied , the wonderful works of God .
    1st Cor.13:13
A sign unto the Jewish nations some 2000 yrs ago.
3000 Jews saved on the day of Pentecost added to the church that day. They did not speak in tongues.
That sign is over , that of today has been high jacked from its true meaning by the serpent.
Only Gods finished ,Holy preserved written word ,with the real Holy Spirit in those preserved words teaches according to it . Not contrary from it.
    Gods Word has commanded
to seek the best gifts , Faith , Hope , charity these 3 & the greatest of these is Charity.

You do know tongues are a sign for the unbeliever right? 1 Corinthians 14:22. Do you also know that every believer does not have this gift? 1 Corinthians 12:30. This is the only gift that had restrictions for its use. Be careful...

Unfortunately no, once the holy spirit enters in you the utterance of tongues will manifest. You will not know what your are saying but its a direct language to our Father in heaven. You will feel his presence, power, and love with in you. God bless

You can fake it and no one will know the difference. That right there shows you how legitimate it is. I would advise you to base your relationship with God on the truth of all of Scripture (not just one verse) rather than an emotional experience which can be falsified.

Pretty much anybody can speak in tongues in the manner he is describing. It takes no work of the Holy Spirit, it just takes someone to start babbling. How anyone would consider this a SIGN is beyond me. Speak in a real language you've never learned. Thats miraculous, thats a sign. This kind of nonsense brings shame and reproach to the church.

Is it really so hard to believe that God would want His children to speak in the same language that He does ?
God's language does sound like babble because it is the source of all earthly languages. What language does God speak to the angels ? You can believe it's not German, English, French etc.

Total nonsense. Scripture says that praying in tongues is acceptable. Nothing about the ability to pray in tongues. Matter of fact it discourages using tongues in public places.

    "whats hindering me"
Maybe its the fact that "speaking ion tongues" is not a real thing, everyone who does it is simply uttering gibberish, its not a language and the people doing it know its 100% made up, and the people wanting to do it actually think its real and dont realise that its a learned skill like anything else, you have to practice speaking gibberish to be able to do it on cue.

TRUE SPEAKING IN THE CLOVEN TONGUE IS...YOU SPEAK AND ALL HEAR AND UNDERSTAND IN THEIR OWN LANGUAGE (DIALECT).. ALL ELSE IS BABBLE AND OF NO USE TO GOD THE FATHER CREATOR OR MANKIND...

    • @joshgellock
      @joshgellock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Paul says the one who speaks in tongues no one understands and demands translation if in the assembly. The idea that when you speak in tongues others will always understand is not a teaching from Scripture. It only happened one time, according to the Scripture (Acts 2). Cloven tongues of fire, and the sound of wind, also only happened one time in Acts.

SPEAKING IN TONGUES MEANS SPEAKING IN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE. NOT BABBLING JIBBERISH THAT IS USELESS TO GOD THE FATHER CREATOR AND USELESS TO MANKIND.. IF IT CANT BE UNDERSTOOD AND IT DOES NOT GLORIFY GOD THE FATHER CREATOR, ITS USELESS TO YOU AND OTHERS. ITS JUST BABBLE AND IS NOT FROM GOD THE FATHER..GOD IS NOT THE FATHER OF CONFUSION. BABBLING IS CONFUSION.

@@czhappy3195 first things first: take off your CAPS LOCK. We can all read - there's no need to shout. Thanks!
If two people are having a conversation in a different language in front of me, it's going to sound like babel regardless. Why? Because I don't understand the language.
Speaking in tongues doesn't help the body of Christ when spoken publicly unless it's interpreted (1 Corinthians 14:26). When it's interpreted, others can say "amen" at the giving of thanks (1 Corinthians 14:16). Otherwise, what is the point of the gift of interpretation? So we see in Scripture that tongues should not be forbidden (v39) but that all things should be done decently and in order (v40).
Lastly, tongues spoken privately aren't useless. They build up the person speaking them to God (v2, 4). Paul prayed in tongues, and he did it often (v18). It's a good thing if done properly.

Wow, bad teaching. Paul was clear tongues was only for some 1 Cor 12, stopped 1 Cor 13 and in 1 Cor 14 Paul says if you dont know what your saying to be quiet or you sound crazy. Avoid this bad teaching.

    • @joshgellock
      @joshgellock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

This teaching is pretty sound. The idea that tongues "stopped" is rather "new". 1 Corinthians speaks of the revelation of Jesus Christ - when perfect comes. The older commentaries usually refer to it that way as well.
Obviously if you pray in tongues during a church service, the only way you can bless others is if there's an interpreter. That's required by Scripture.

Peter gave a sermon in Acts 2 in the common tongue, not in languages he didn't understand. His sermon came after the Holy Spirit fell, indicated by the word "then".
Also, languages I don't understand are always going to sound like babel. Have you never read Genesis?
