Same, I am hoping this will be my first headset too, If I were to get a normal headset I would need to get a new PC too, knowing my Laptop now is a work laptop it wouldn't be a good idea to try playing VR games with the headset, so knowing they made something that doesn't require a PC is great, I cant wait!

@@hynnd323 I think it would come down to which design can cover more ground faster. Knuckles gives you more sensitivity for fine finger movements, but a pistol or grip-based controller intuitively feels better for holding tools and weapons and throwing things. There's a design in progress you can find on here where they use an elastic-band to grip a controller to a person's hand, with in-facing sensors measuring finger movements, and pressure sensors on the controller. It gave them the ability to control grip strength intuitively, as well as actually do a throwing motion without fear of throwing the controller when letting go of the controller.
You don't really get the feeling of gripping a tool with knuckles (until they seriously beast that haptic feedback mechanism), but I imagine the future will most likely develop a means of synergizing the two. Having a glove design as well as a responsive, haptic tool controller will give a pretty wide degree of data for managing user input.

Standalone VR will probably be the future of entertainment but I still think that it will be better if you get the Rift S until the processor, game library, and storage on standalone get better. Honestly, I view standalone as more of a coffee table toy. It's just too limited, and I worry the hordes of hyped commenter here planing to buy the Quest, are just going to be regretting the 98% of content they're locked out from in just a years time. All the real and worthwhile experiences are going to be PC powered, and owners of tethered headsets will still be able to use them years from now. It's the same story as PC vs Console gaming. Cheaper better wireless and newer battery technologies will be the more significant change for VR as a whole.

  • @AiRJacobs

If they included an official wireless "PC-To-HMD" streaming capability at launch, effectively allowing all Oculus and SteamVR games to be compatible, it would absolutely CRUSH the VR market. Not needing to start up my computer and having to play in my bedroom (where my pc is located) every time is worth more to me than better performance and graphics.

Keep in mind that it's not just performance and graphics, it's also content. 99% of VR content simply isn't going to be available on Quest. The bigger and more complex games, even if they have lower graphics, won't run on Quest. Games such as VR-Chat, which eat up 20gb of your hard-drive, would be a nightmare on Quest's tiny 64gb storage. Games that utilize full body tracking, will not be possible on Quest. Games that you get immersed in for more than three hours, will be painful to play on quest. There's a huge list of compromises.

Firstly, I realised that I wanted something that was more portable and something I could take on the go. Secondly, I realised the only games that I really wanted for the system were Beat Saber and VRChat which VRChat could be played on the Oculus Go through something like Virtual Desktop or Big Screen with a controller (I think there's a way to mod Beat Saber too however I think a proper gaming PC is required in order to do so.) Lastly, I found out that the Oculus Go was perfect for watching 360° Videos and watching Netflix and TH-cam, i've had such a relaxing and fun time playing simple yet unique games such as Virtual Virtual Reality with the Oculus Go and lying down in bed watching Netflix. If you have simular prefrences to me then you should at least consider the GO, also if you really want 6 degrees of freedom then you could search up a TH-cam tutorial and mod it onto your GO.

Carmack revealed the Quest can side-load, the Quest runs on a custom still-supported Android 7 OS, and it has a data cable to transfer with, and Beatsaber has no real changes to it's code other than graphical. It's 100% certain that modding is possible, however, the time it will take for modsaber devs to build an APK is unknown.
I would not not be surprised if modsaber had a app out within the first few days.

It all depends on what you want from your VR experience. HTC Vive and Oculus Rift have better specs in terms of visual performance, but that only goes so far. Being tethered to a PC is a HUGE drawback when it comes to creating total immersion. I would much rather use a standalone headset that allows me to physically walk/run around my virtual environment. Also, the Oculus Quest literally could not be any more different than the Oculus Go. To say the Quest is "the same thing with a few tweaks" is completely absurd.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Not a chance. Power consumption of a 1060 would already exceed what this tiny mobile processor consumes alone. And the thermals would be atrocious. The "active cooling" that the quest has is pitiful compared to even the most basic laptop which already sacrifice the considerable majority of the 1060s normal heatsink volume. To fit one in a headset you'd be running that GPU at half capacity at best.

For clarification; the Quest may or may not have a dedicated app for streaming your PC to the Quest, but there are apps that can do that for any headset, including the Go. Latency issues could be dependent on your setup, and not the hardware (nic card) of the Quest since the Go manages streaming just fine if kept withing reasonable temps. Walling your user base (segmented) in the adoption phase is not a good idea, but I can understand why they want to do it from a business standpoint, but it does goes against their goal of mass adoption. In the beginning of any new tech, the innovators have to take the initial hit in order to lay down the foundation and attract. Every early software company knows this btw. To me it seems Oculus is stirring into the Apple model. I hope I'm wrong.

@@dtz1000 What does that change? Does a game play good? It ages well. Is Doom graphically impressive for today's standards? No, but it plays so well.

@wittybush_...Did you not hear what he said in the video? PCVR will always give a better experience than something with a two and a half year old mobile processor.

@@dtz1000 The moment this takes off. The mass will love it, soon it will rise up to become a much more powerful and cheaper alternative. This is a roadmap you have to look at.

Hi I am an Oculus developer and I am very excited to get the Quest to start to develop for this device. Humble, I think that the Quest will create a Massive VR Market. Maybe this one have not the best Quality experience or other tech topic but for its price and because all the people will not have Rift / HTC Vive and Go at the same time so they can not compare which is the best, for it., It is the best option for me.. My dream is the VR for all !!! It will be a great tool for learning !!!!

So the quest can used with the steam store
And the quality and disc space can be better with a good computer?
    Thanks for answering

Might be able to unofficially use steam months after release but it would probably suck.
And no it cannot be used as a pcvr headset

I am very excited, I think it is the perfect device for those, like myself, who don't have a pc strong enough to run the rift or the money to purchase said pc. I love robo recall on the rift so can't wait to play that in my own home instead of bugging my buddy to play on the rift. With that said, please for the love of all things, when the hell is the release date? Haha, I know you don't know but man, early spring to me is now.

The tether from rift headset to my PC drove me nuts and ended up returning it. Can't wait for the Quest!

one of the questions I have is how well does the devise stick to your head? Can you feel it wobble around when you shake your head, does it feel like it's going to fall off or does it fit snug and tight on your head like a headlamp.

Even though I own a Rift I still want one of these! The true deciding factor for me will be a review of Robo Recall running on it. That game probably makes best use of the touch controllers on the Rift, and is quite simply the best touch experience, period. If that game play can be reproduced in the Quest, the lower graphics simply won't matter. It would be worth the entry price alone. It's THAT good!
Great video man! It was awesome to get a first look from someone who knows their stuff.

I'd love something simple to buy along with the quest, maybe like an outside processor with extra storage that you can plug into the headset itself, amping up what games you can play on it. Like a mini gaming PC that fits in your pocket and can simple be connected to the back of the vr, one can dream

I suspect the reason the show model has the leather face padding and plastic backing is to allow the staff to wipe the headsets with a disinfectant between users

Thank you so much for this video! I've been living off scraps of details for the Quest but this video answered it all and then some. This is the first that I've heard of the feature that will allow you to see outside the VR (albeit black and white and grainy, as you specified) without taking the headset off. Really excited for Vader Immortal as well!
