I think the best thing they could have done to make this device better, would be to make the panel compatible for at least 90hz or higher, but only run it at 72hz when it's in standalone mode. That feature alone would take this whole setup to the next level because it would make it really versatile, as a on-the-go VR set as well as a high perfect headset.
@@Obliveater95YT John Carmack actually answered that. They are technically capable of doing 90Hz right now, but it would break their FCC certification. So for the next generation they will make sure to certify at any possible refresh rate, but it's too late for the first gen quest :(
@unrepeatable raddish No, lower refresh rate causes more motion sickness. I own an Index and I can play that significantly longer because of the much higher refresh rate.

Lorenzo Clara You’re right however it’s only a 8hz difference many of the new comers to VR won’t really notice this. The Blacks on the OLED will look nicer to say the least. the warnings in Vader immortal were there because you were putting you head through geometry. also yes there is more of a stutter in games when you are recording video at the same time.
This happened to me in episode 2 when I was stuck under the map (while climbing) it was really confusing with no way to fix it other than quit and start the chapter again. Fine for me but new players really can't handle that frustration.
It seems like it was handled really poorly. They should give you a wireframe of the scene so you can navigate back into the correct space instead of arrows which might be confusing. Alternatively there should be a button that returns you to the last correct position.
Paradox Shift Well still if you buy a $600 pc and a Rift S then altogether it would be around 1000 dollars and I think that a $600 pc would be a little jittery.
How cool would it be if there was a game where you could play with another person in real life and have a lightsaber duel while seeing the real world but having a saber
It’s lagging because you’re recording The lightsaber lags because the controllers have a different tracking rate then the screen (lower, but you can change it in the settings). Vader immortal didn’t really work since you walked out of the play space. Oculus link and sidequest exist to expand the library. Red Matter’s graphics exist

12:15 Linus: "Am I outside of my safe space?" I know life can be tough at times Linus. We all got a need for a place where we can truely express ourselves and be the special human being each and every one of us is.
Riley's really come into his own as far as being able to push up against some of Linus's ideas, "[maybe it's 'cause you're recording]" is most excellent. Keep it up, Riley. A high tide raises all ships, and a high tide at LTT is having some fight in ya spirit.
I'd say that's a perfectly logical remark to make given the hardware. Too bad they didn't go the also logical extra mile of actually disabling the recording and comparing the results.
Hey linus, computer vision engineer here, its not the space that matters tracking to work, but rather the texture. Its going to perform badly in a situation where there are no objects and everything is same color. It tries to "detect definitive locations" on the room and handling tracking through those points. We call this keypoint detection, it is a very robust, very powerful and efficienct technique. It is also important to have keypoints that are visible anywhere on the room for this to work accurately, for example, if your wall has a painting or a definitive, unique texture, that is insanely helpful for the quality of the tracking. And this will only improve over time, there are alot of advanced methods we have that can provide milimeter accurate tracking (so precise that we can literally measure your heart beat speed from little movements of your body) using only cameras but those require a bit too much computation right now.
can you make a video detailing what helps the tracking in more layman terms? Like, if I take a few cardboard boxes, color them pure black and throw them around the room, would that help? Why? What about lights? I have dimmed lights in my room. Does lack of bright light affect tracking? What if I turn off all lights in room and make it all dark? This would be super helpful for all who have this type of tracking devices.
@@Muhanoid Uniqueness is the key here, having multiple black cardboxes can actually hurt the performance since the tracker may confuse black cardboxes with each other (actuallly, if something is not unique, tracker is more likely to ignore it completely to avoid confusion). I would say having pictures , doesnt matter what, on your walls are very important in this case, they are visible almost always, they are very unique (assuming you dont have same picture in multiple locations), they make the perfect features. Light levels should be enough for camera's to be able to produce clear image, it very much depends on the camera's used in headset rather than actual algorithm. But i heard quest's cameras perform good on dim light.
@@astronemir Exactly, also repeated patterns are basically useless. A simple way to know what would make a good keypoint is basically assuming that you randomly zoom into 30x30 pixel region from an image, can you recognize where it was on the original image? Corner of a image for example would be very recognizable, but a repeated texture on carpet would not be very easily recognizable (since there are too many "potential" locations for a repeated texture).
@@Muhanoid Hard contrast changes help a lot for any type of tracking. Bland surfaces with little to no change are a pain, any random object that stands out will greatly help, say a dark object in a white background. Though I'm only assuming as I've only dealt with motion tracking in 3D software, but the basic idea should be the same for the Oculus here.

@@hoen2009 The problem is that Quest draws the same kind of fanboyism that consoles do. There is a cognitive bias that happens when you get these people who are either too poor or too lazy to build/buy a gaming PC capable of the superior experience that PCVR brings on higher fidelity HMDs. They get irrationally defensive when people attack their Quest because deep down they are insecure about the fact that they are possibly missing out on a greater experience if they spent more on a powerful PC. The Quest is still cool though. However, the Rift S is just straight up better in every aspect outside of portability.

AkTon I bought the Oculus after being introduced to it by a friend, I definitely think it’s worth I just don’t use it as much because I’ve gotten a bunch of other gaming devices recently but I definitely think its worth it. The only thing I don’t like about it is that it’s a little heavy in the front but other than that it’s fine, I got used to it being a little heavy in the front and now don’t feel it. Most of the games you can buy for it are under $30 and the selection of games is great, you can also get games that aren’t out yet or custom songs for beat saber using your laptop or computer on side quest. (it’s a thing you can download I don’t use it much though) so yeah, I definitely think it’s worth it. I really just use the quest for beatsaber and job simulator but there are a ton of other games too.

Quality VR is worth doing a one time setup for a camera, but if the quest gets more casual people into the VR market than I'm still really happy it exists.

Hell Linus even mentions in this video the point they were original trying to make. Seriously, LTT gets so much hate in stuff like VR focused subreddits over misconstrued comments.
The quest is a game changer. I have a buddy with one and after trying it, yeah, 100% the none tethered experience is where it is at. The quality of the graphics and the display really is secondary to the experience and the portability. Apparently oculus is preparing an update so you can tether the Quest to a gaming PC if you want to. But I think the fully mobile experience is the future of VR.
Be aware that that is just streaming over usb3, it won't be a good experience for most people. Some people might be able to handle it if they are used to something like PSVR of google cardboard. Or for the delusional lead-stomach'd people that use ALVR. The future of VR has many places, both high-end attached to a high-end processing power and mobile VR/AR.
@@sqlevolicious I tried it and a bunch of my friends have tried it too. It isn't as smooth as a better headset, but the tracking and the framerate aren't problems. They just aren't strengths either. I have never felt sick.
When it comes to low-budget stuff, it really is the experience that's important. That's Apple's deal with the 11, that's Oculus' idea with this, and it really should be the case with everything honestly. Provide the best experience possible, whether or not that means matching numbers or meeting certain expectations, in this case the graphics quality or resolution. Shoot, it's why PC gaming (and slowly but surely console gaming) has been so focused on frame rate. A great frame rate leads to a more enjoyable experience than a great resolution or great graphics setting. Great frame rate with a good enough graphics experience is ssooo much more enjoyable.
not for me... the wire doesnt bother me. id take that and a higher refresh rate, sharper graphics, more complex graphics, better physics and no motion sickness any day of the week. i can see why the quest is so popular though, its damn good at what it does, its just not for me.
That sounds like a "you" problem, but welcome to the VR world. There's lots to enjoy and many things to experience :) Once you go VR it's hard to go back. No joke.

Filming, reviewing and Linus + Riley combo seems to work well. More videos like these please! (if it fits for the product) everything can't be reviewed like this ofc.
Not only is it a $400 headset, it also doesn't require a crazy high performance PC. Even if I could afford a high end VR setup, I would also have to have a PC that can run it all, which makes the price of the experience skyrocket.

That whole discussion about VR is basically the equivalent of a bunch of people standing round the seedling of a tree and staring at it waiting for it to grow. Player 1: "Sorry dude, I think it's dead." Player 2: "What do you mean it's dead? Is nice and green. Getting plenty of sun. Looks fine." Player 1: "But it's tiny and it's not moving. Where are the fruit?" Player 2: "It's gotten 300% bigger than the last time we measured it, and the time before that. It's actually growing incredibly quickly, but these things just take time." Player 1: "Eh. I've never paid attention to any actual measurements myself, but a youtuber told me it was dead so I took their word for it." Meanwhile in the background there's a forest of trees labbeled, gaming, television, mobile phones, powered flight, the combustion engine, gunpowder, agriculture, etc. A classic case of the old saying, "Can't see the forest for the trees" in my opinion.
@@UnknownSquid All those other trees in the aforementioned forest started out as seedlings too. For example, there was a time when some people were like "meh, I don't need a smartphone, I have my Nokia brick phone and a PDA right here" or even "Payphones are everywhere, I don't need a mobile phone", and now it's like "You don't have a smartphone?", also, televisions were black and white and very small at one point, now we've got like, 80 inch 8k TVs. If people had just went "Meh, television's only in black and white, it's dead" and nobody showed interest in it, I don't think we'd be where we were now with TVs. Video games were 2D color blocks at one point, now they're becoming borderline photorealistic. All of these seedlings became wonderful trees because people took care of them when they were young, and the same applies to VR. Any plant will die if not properly cared for, so when you see a bunch of people crowding around that seedling saying "just wait", it's because we see what it will be, not what it is currently, but there's people going "meh, cut it down and uproot the remains from the ground, it didn't instantly turn into a tree fast enough for me." VR enthusiasts aren't blind, we _know_ there's a forest behind it and we also know it doesn't invalidate the forest existing because of this one sapling, it's just a rare opportunity to see a piece of said forest form and we wanna see that to completion, knowing what came of the other saplings that comprise that forest. Player 2 is visualizing how beautiful of a tree it will be in due time, Player 1 is going "I've only ever seen fully grown trees so I don't care for the process that goes into creating more".
I know I dont know wtf he was talking about, it's never been laggy or stuttery for me and when I use virtual desktop ir oculus link cable it performs even better than my rift and the HTC vive
@@thedonzo You gotta consider how long ago this video was, the Quest was still really good, but his experience definitely isn't to be dismissed because today's Quest became really good, as for the past couple of months even, it's improved a lot. Also in terms of the video, it's going to be useless to look at the footage even if you're watching it at 60fps, because I imagine he'd feel it was a bit more stuttery than what's at least he's used to which is the Index. That's more of a testament to his VR experiences and not how stuttery the Quest WILL feel for most people who buy it.

@@OzzySafa That's fine. But even Oculus stated the Quest (w/ Link) will never deliver as good as an experience as the Rift S. Ppl that tried Link and are hyping it up seem to be ignoring Oculus' own stance on the issue.

If you're willing to give up some graphical fidelity, then the QUest tradeoffs might be good enough others.

So I should put up carpets/paintings with very distinct patterns up to help it track better?
Watching him play Vader immortal, he was so whinny, and difficult. I have less trouble navigating my mentally challenge niece through the same game.

Hey Linus do a quest 2 review
Hopefully theres better wireless solutions for future desktop vr headsets.

@@WMan37 Yeah, that's exactly my point. I kind of want to draw it as a comic or something.
@@UnknownSquid well said.
I'd really like to see Time Crisis re-released for these VR systems.
Joseph Amir on side quest there Crisis Vrgade. It is pretty much time crisis. I love it
Linus: “it’s so stuttery!”
Controller tracking when he shows it: (buttery smooth)
@@jinsory5582 I do when he made this video is when the oculus link beta dropped and all those things im saying came out lol. That being said it was all fresh but as a tech guy I would have assumed he would be on top of that stuff. Its my job to keep up with the latest technology and its linus's job as well so yeah...no hate just a huge oversight on his part.
Suggestion: an audio cue when more info is displayed would be nice, that way if I’m multitasking I can glance at the video and see it.
Lucasbim Seconded! I think MKBHD's started doing that too.
Should have put "Im sorry"in the title for more views
With a facepalm on the thumbnail and a sigh at the beginning of the video lol
9:45 linus’s editor tried crack for the first time
Can we give thanks to the person who made such awesome edits on this video? They’re a different approach to normal memes in linus videos but I like it a lot more
