  • I need to be able to pull engines and don’t have a cherry picker or good place to store one. I went over-budget on this build but it can be done easily for less than $200(including the chain hoist not shown). This thing breaks down and stores nicely in my shed, where space is already limited. Stay tuned for future episodes, where you’ll get to see this bad boy put to use!

    thx for the video I took some of your ideas ,, (yours is definitely a better build than mine and looks a hell of a lot better than mine) ... my goal was sticking with a strict budget of $200 which included a used hoist I got off of FB market place.... my goal was a little different because all I need was to use it for once or twice before I cut it up for firewood and was not going to keep it long term lol anyway your video kicked off the idea of building my own instead of buying one ... thx again

      That’s awesome, I’m glad I was able to inspire you to build your own! My whole purpose in making any videos is to make people go, “if that goober can do it, I can too!” 🤣
      Thanks for commenting!

    We used an old heavy duty swing set and we put some wheels on the bottom to roll around thing works awesome

    I really like the gantry. The only thing I would add is wheels with brakelocks. Just a suggestion.

      @Sean LaPlante, thanks! I definitely plan on some casters with at least two of them being of the locking variety. I’ll have to shorten the uprights by as much height as the casters add, but that should be easy enough and well worth the benefit of mobility.

    Great video. I’m building the same and like the way you did it. I’m only hoisting a 300lbs hitch out of my truck bed. Thinking I can use 2x4s instead of 2x6s. I’m not hoisting an engine.

      Thanks! I’m sure 2x4s will do just fine. After using this thing, I’m thinking 2x4s would’ve worked for me too!

    nice work looking to build a smaller version of one (don't need to to be that high) to lift the front of my car so that I can roll out the engine and drivetrain out of my 4thgen f-body

      The first(and last!) LT1 I pulled from an F-body we did in my buddy’s shed with some 2nd rate hand tools. Dropping the cradle and rolling it out probably would’ve been easier, not us though! It was a real sh*t-show, we couldn’t get one of the exhaust manifolds off in-car so we pulled it with one still attached and we had to go up so far, turn the engine 90* and finally come the rest of the way out. Lol, good times!

      @@carportshenanigans5918 lol lol yea with 4th gen fbodys dropping it from the bottom is as easy as it gets lol because you can drop the engine and trans with the wiring harness in one shot .... i have always used an engine hoist to do it but your idea of building a cheap crane like this is the way I am going to go from this point on... anyway good work subbed to your channel to keep up with the content thx again for a easy way to make one of these cranes

    Have you made any design changes since this video?

    • @carportshenanigans5918
      @carportshenanigans5918  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I haven’t changed a thing with it. I have a tendency to over-build things and this thing doesn’t flex or make any noises with 600lbs hanging. The average Joe may want to make his a little taller, but for my height constraints, it’s perfect.

    Nice build are you going to test this out with dead weight above and beyond the engine weight for safety?

    • @carportshenanigans5918
      @carportshenanigans5918  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tested it with live weight(me) to about half of the weight of the engine. Safety third! That is what will make the engine removal video so exciting...the thrill of possible death/dismemberment.

      @@carportshenanigans5918 I will be sure to tune in, but before you start how about adding a Member of GMN to your will for one of your rides. LOL BTW great time for a live stream video with a caption "Man risk life and limb for your entertainment"

      LOL. The wife has first refusal of all my junk of any value. If I end up wearing the engine as a hat, you’ll have to go through her to get to my heap o’parts! 🤣
