    How to build a gantry crane hoist thing for lifting stuff. Comes in particularly handy for lifting engines and truck beds. I don't condone drinking and working. Nor do I make any guarantees whatsoever about the structural soundness of this gantry.
    My Ryobi drill, have been abusing it for 4 years now:

    I am not an engineer, but I can use online beam calculators: two 4x4s stacked for your main beam has significantly less capacity than two 2x8s used on edge. Didn't you watch that episode of Mr. Wizard as a kid?

    There was a crooked man, and he walked a crooked mile,
    He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile;
    He bought a crooked cat which caught a crooked mouse,
    And they all lived together in a little crooked house.

    if you've ever seen the header of a garage door - it's made up of two or three 2x10's. pretty strong and pretty cheap to build. i'm building a gantry so that'll be my top cross member. thx for this video.

      Thanks man. This gantry served me surprisingly well - I used it to pull the engine out of my Subaru, and even used it to pull an incredibly heavy dump bed off a truck. But in the future, I think it may be a better choice to just buy a gantry so I don't have to wonder if today is the day I get to meet God.

    should have ran a bottom 2x stock to make it a square instead of an upside U. If all sides are connected, the torques will balance in the truss, and strength will go up...... Your design is inherently unstable unless it was welded steel. T = F x D, with a lever arm of 8ft, any miniscule unbalanced force will really cause your thing to move and bend and sway...... Need to make it a box where the bottom you can drive over, just a simple 2x12 facing down will do.

  • @codekker989
    @codekker989 ปีที่แล้ว

    nothing to do with torque ... at the beginning he cut the wood from the middle of the bridged piece of wood. Imagine more torque? lol .. youd get your saw blade right into your leg with that position. keep drinkin! Not all is bad, great finish, but keep safety in mind.

    Have you ever seen Carpenters use drag-legs to raise a wall? It's now 2022: are you still alive? What 3 year old kid designed those "saw-horses?" I like the minimalist design of your gantry but it needs tweaking. I need one to lift my 150 Mercury outboard motor onto my boat. Your design uses less lumber and if I build this I'll only use it once or twice in my life.

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh man, a couple wall jacks (I assume drag-leg is a colloquialism for it?) would've saved me a serious amount of strain, didn't even know what that was until you mentioned it. I wouldn't know about those saw horses, maybe Mr. Home-Depot's son? I agree, it could benefit from some side-to-side/lateral stability. But I'll tell you this -- I've used it to lift the engine out of my Subaru, and I've even used it to lift a dump bed off of my truck (that thing must've weighed well over 1000 lbs). Lifting the dump is something I wouldn't ever do again, but given that I'm not dead, I guess the gantry did just fine.

    • @choimdachoim9491
      @choimdachoim9491 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bootstrappin Not wall-jacks, just a couple boards with one nail at the top, one on each side and laid out to drag up as the wall is lifted and catch on the ground/floor when a rest is needed. I give you credit for the fact your gantry works but if you ever sober up you might be embarrassed by your workmanship...

    • @Bootstrappin
      @Bootstrappin  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@choimdachoim9491 I see, gotcha. It was definitely a different time, and a different me. If I had to do it again, I'd probably just buy a steel gantry, even a used one would be less anxiety-inducing than this one, and I could also just sell it again.

    Geez. Obviously, you've never done any carpentry work just seeing the way you used those saws, and have ZERO common sense in engineering the simplest of structures. You're also alone, so be very careful. Also, your terminology for everything you used is way off. But.. good job dude, everyone has to start somewhere!! 👍
