    Great video Calvin! Some interesting choices, but to me, I think a missed opportunity is Tracey's Cougar from On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Not only was it from a great scene in a brilliant film, but it was one of the few times which it not only gave the 'bond girl/woman' power and made them feel equal to bond, but reinforces Tracey's strong character. Plus, it's nice to see Bond being the one rescued for once ;)

    If I had to argue against the DB5, I would make a case for the BMW 750iL from Tomorrow Never Dies. It's often ridiculed as a family car, but that's not what it is. It's a luxury sedan with understated exterior whose buyers clearly belong to the upper 10% but who don't like to show off and want to come off as reputable and serious instead. On his mission Bond attends an exclusive media event in Germany posing as a banker. There is no car in the world suited better to his cover for that particular situation than a BMW 7 series. It's completely inconspicuous yet fast and powerful at the same time.
    That particular model, the 750iL, is equipped with a glorious V12 engine and has a longer wheelbase (hence the "L") creating more space behind the front seats for people who like to sit in the back while being driven. It's a basic feature that is perfectly utilized during the chase sequence.
    And here's why it's perfect for MI6: BMW is actually offering an armour plated version of the 750iL. In that model, the suspension, chassis, drivetrain and transmission are all reworked to not only cope with the extra weight, but also make the car agile enough to be the perfect getaway vehicle. That classic stunt combining driving off in reverse and a 180° handbrake turn? That's an actual test this car has to pass before it's sold to its very important customers.
    For all those fancy Aston Martins and Lotuses, Q branch would have to employ a whole armada of automotive engineers to adjust them to all the extra weight they put in and make sure they can hold their own in a car chase. With the 750iL, they get a fast, well-handling armour plated car ex factory and can solely focus on the gadgets. Since MI6 is operating on tax payer's money, that would seem to me like the only logical and sensible way for them to run their special vehicles department.
    Speaking of gadgets: The key features of the car from Tomorrow Never Dies are as grounded in reality as awesome Bond gadgets can possibly be. The remote control feature may have been regarded as quite chimerical in 1997, but with the drive-by-wire systems in today's cars it is 100% viable. Using your phone as the control interface? A remarkably accurate prediction of today's reality. The self-inflating tyres? Only a couple of years later, BMW would equip their actual cars with so-called run-flat-tyres that can still be safely used after a puncture.
    But here's the best part about the BMW 750iL from Tomorrow Never Dies: Despite being so sensible and grounded in reality, it provides a magnificent spectacle. The car alone carries a hilarious Q branch scene. It is the subject of one of the greatest dialogues in the movie, between Dr. Kaufmann and Bond. And of course it stars in a fantastic inventive gadget-laden chase sequence that expertly utilizes all its features.

    I too have thought about the whole Lotus Submarine vs. Invisible Aston Martin and I came up with a reason as to why:
    For The Spy Who Loved Me, they tried to make you believe the car was a submarine. Sure, the concept was unrealistic, but they used models and gutted Lotuses driven by scuba teams to make it look real, and allow you to suspended that disbelief.
    With Die Another Day, the invisible Vanquish is just another bit of the unconvincing CGI that Tamahori out into the film. DAD knew the invisibility concept was unrealistic, so didn't try to make it look real or try to make us believe.
    TSWLM knew it's concept was unrealistic, but tried anyway. That's why the Lotus > Vanquish.

    • @PetersonZF
      @PetersonZF 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Lotus is a lot more plausible than how the invisible Aston is supposed to work. It's one thing saying it's made up of cameras and screens, but on the wheels as well? Including the rubber of the tyres?

    • @gameragodzilla
      @gameragodzilla ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PetersonZF That is possible with sturdy enough cameras and the concept is based on real life active camouflage.
      Really, the only complaint that I think makes sense is it is a CGI effect and people consider the overuse of CGI in general as the worst part of Die Another Day (the infamous tsunami scene being the nadir of the film).
      But outside of that, I always loved the concept of the invisible car and me being able to use that ability (albeit on a different vehicle) in Everything or Nothing was a lot of fun.

    • @PetersonZF
      @PetersonZF ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gameragodzilla A much more realistic version of this was done on Alias with a tiny remote control car. It was covered with a single curved panel that showed an image of the floor beneath it, making it blend in if you didn't look too closely.

Yea, I guess it was a green "1935 Bentley 3.5 litre drophead coupe Park Ward". We know it had a "Mobile Phone", and a "Black Box". We saw Bond use it in the film "From Russia with Love", but I wonder what other gadgets and Q-Branch modifications it had. I'll be willing to bet that it, at least, had "Level II Armor", a "Chapman Protection System", "Dimmers"(a Q gadget), "Gas Ports", "Oxygen Units", "Gun Ports", "Halogen Burst Lamp"(this probably would've been Bond's favorite, at the time), "Puncture Proof Tires", "Revolving Licence Plate" and a "Smoke Screen". Another favorite car than the DB5? Well, here I am. My favorite Bond car of all time is without any question or doubt the Lotus Esprit from Spy. As kid my favorite car was the Countach (and still is). In 1982 my parents bought our first VHS and later and I became a hysterical Bond fan! About once per month they rented different Bond movies (together with Clint Eastwood movies, and others).
    One of the first Bond movies I watched was Goldfinger and I of course loved it aswell as the DB5, however being an F1 fan and a supercar fan as I was, already as a kid the DB5 looked quite ”old” for my taste. My heart belonged to I the Countach, the 512BB, the Pantera etc, etc - and about half a year later my mom rented her favorite Bond movie of all time - The Spy who loved me. I loooved it, and I loooved the Lotus! I became crazy about the Lotus! Here was finally a mid engine car looking almost like the Countach. Bond was driving a mid engine sports car - and how cool wasn’t that? The fact that I even nowdays loves sports cars, supercars and F1, and adding a bit of nostalgia, makes the Esprit my undisputed favorite Bond car.
    Thanks for your fantastic videos, and keep up the good work 😊👍🏻

Conspicuously featured in the first half of GoldenEye, in a blink-and-you'll-miss scene in Tomorrow Never Dies and in ultimately cut scenes filmed in Scotland for TWINE. Seeing as Craig will use it again in NTTD, he'll be the winner after all.

    I get what you’re saying and really we look back on MCU films and can accept an invisible helicarrier just fine..but I think I have a good counter argument:
    The fact is that the effect pulled off seems fake, what I mean is that the process of it going from Invisible to visible is shown as way too clear and glitchy, when really it should take a good while for the machinations to reveal it.
    Not to mention they don’t really explain HOW it can vanish, at least MCU explained its multi cameras mixed with light bending. Not to mention how DAMN easy it is for Bond to know WHERE it is. He should be bumping into it once or twice at least but he’s always RIGHT next to it with little problem!
    The car itself is damn cool...the execution leaves a lot to be desired

I've always loved the very unusual style of retro cars from the late 70's to early 80's like the Lotus Esprit and the DeLorean, and always wished I owned one. I know the DB5 was iconic in being the original Bond car, but if I was freely offered a car that can also explore the ocean, I'm taking it over any other car!

Also can't believe the vanquish is your number 2 choice. We're all allowed to have our opinions but that invisible crap is just too much to buy sorry.

    Great video as usual Calvin, I especially like the way you nailed why the DB5 is so popular, it's like a recurring character, so much that it even gets its own 'death scene'. I remember, when I was watching Skyfall, everyone in the cinema cheered on its reveal and laughed when they saw how pissed Bond was at its destruction. As you said, I have differed with your opinions on occasions but the DB5 is without a doubt my no. 1 car and I don't think I've met a Bond fan who thinks otherwise either. It's James Bond in car form - handsome, classy, deadly, full of surprises.

    Honorable mention (for me, anyway): Diamonds Are Forever's Ford Mustang Mach I (okay, so it's actually rented by Tiffany Case, still, it's fun to see Bond in a classic American muscle car). Of course, it helps to be a Mustang fan as well as a Bond fan.

    Interesting fact I discovered recently. The Aston Martin DB5 reg. BMT 216A features in a 1964 episode of 'The Saint' starring Roger Moore. The episode is called 'The Noble Sportsman' and pre-dates production of Goldfinger by a few months. The BMT 216A car was Aston Martin's newest model and was originally red. It appears it was a promotional model, first off the production line and given to film producers. The shots in The Saint episode were filmed near Pinewood Studios. Eagle eyed viewers will see the same registration plate as Bond's car in 'Goldfinger'. I believe that it was re-sprayed silver for Goldfinger for its iconic introduction to the Bond franchise!

    Here's a question that I'm sure has been asked before: Is the DB5 from Skyfall supposed to be the same DB5 that Bond wins from Alex Dimitrios in Casino Royale? The fact that the steering wheel moves to the other side and that the ejector seat has apparently been fitted suggests it's a different car.

    Legend says that when the producers said the BMW was going to be sawn in half, the people at BMW were completely silent with shock for a few seconds. Seriously sounds like a nice joke in a Monty Python movie.

    I liked the "Pimp Mobile" in Live and Let Die. I believe it was a Cadillac Eldorado with a Corvette top. I Would love to own this car today but I would maybe replace the dart loaded rear view mirrors just in case I accidentally kill myself.

    • @tasaab
      @tasaab 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right! A bit of clarification for you. These cars were called “Corvonado” (spelling). Literally completely a corvette with new front/rear fiberglass panels matching up to the actual Eldorado front/rear ends. Cadillac mirrors. Otherwise, all Corvette.

    Trivia Question: Which of the James Bond actors was first to drive the Aston Martin BMT 216A on screen?
    It was Roger Moore, who drove (...briefly, I believe) BMT 216A in an episode of 'The Saint' prior to the release of Goldfinger.
    Moore's BMT 216A was maroon (I think - the episode was in black and white). I'm not sure if it was physically the same car, which was later resprayed silver, or whether they just swapped the registration plate onto Connery's car.

    Move the 750iL to #1 and move everything above it in your list down to accomodate it, and you have my list in a nutshell.
    I'm a car enthusiast, and I've had a soft spot for BMW my whole life. For me, seeing the E38 7-series appear in a Bond made sense. It fit his cover story beautifully, and I can't get over the late-90s BMWs. I'm surprised Q Branch didn't give him the contemporary M5, but this awesome 7-series more than makes up for it with that incredible chase scene with Brosnan driving from the backseat. The car's AI is comedy gold throughout, and the car's fitted gadgetry, to me personally, fits right in that sweet spot combining good fun with technical plausibility.
