So glad the Moonraker skydive ranked as highly - your sentiment toward the LTK water ski apply here too. The insanity of the stunt doesn't get enough recognition, I don't think.
Kal _ 290 Glad to see another fan of the water ski bit too! I think it’s one of the stunts that you appreciate more when you think about how nuts it is than just how it appears on screen
@@calvindyson I always liked the water skiing scene from Licence To Kill myself. Especially since its behind a seaplane about to take off, and from what I know about aircraft they can get up to speed quite bit faster than a car or boat can. I also enjoyed the "fishing for Sanchez's plane" with the Coast Guard helicopter and the winch in the teaser sequence and the climax with the tanker trucks. The truck sequence especially ran into quite a few issues according to the making of on the DVD/ Blu Ray. The fact that it was filmed on a remote highway section that the Mexican government had closed due to many fatal vehicle accidents especially stands out as one of them.
Ltk is insane, that bit where he is behind the sea plane and skiing is great especially when he swings out and grabs the landing gear bit while it's taking off.
I actually really like the stunt from For Your Eyes Only, where Bond and Melina are tied together and are dragged underwater/ on the water surface across the reef.
I agree! That stunt is one of my personal favorites in the James Bond series. B. J. Worth and Jake Lombard really have my respect for risking their lives on that one. Also the HALO jump sequence in Tomorrow Never Dies is another favorite since I had not seen a HALO jump on film before. Like many of the parachute stunts in the series, they had to make multiple jumps just for about for a two minute scene.
Hell yeah Octopussy is mentioned!!! Thank you Calvin for being the first i know to mention the most overlooked stunts in the series that come from my favourite and what I consider the absolute best film in the series! Octopussy absolutely has it all! Great villains, great henchmen you really dont wanna mess with, an interesting main girl, death defying stunts, an amazing pre-title sequence, a good title song, amazing score by John Barry, beautiful cinematography, humor that is actually funny, a realistic plot! Absolutely everything you excpect from a Bond film can be found here! This film is unfairly melined and ridiculously underrated, the most underrated film in the series and at the same time the most underrated movie I have ever seen in my life!
Thanks very much for the great comment and I very much agree with you! It’s probably the most underrated film in the entire series. It’s one of my go-to Bond films when I just want to kick back and relax in front of a movie. Very glad to read such enthusiasm for it as well 😁😁 THANK YOU!!
Here's a variation that might be a fun list - Top Stunts Performed By The James Bond Actor Himself... Obviously we might be a little light during the Roger years, but a standout for me would be Dalton hanging on to the top of the land rover in TLD.
Fun fact: for number 8, the Tiger pilot that Xenia shoots that says, “I think I’ve gone to Heaven.” is stuntman Wayne Michaels: the man who did the actual dam bungee jump in the opening credits.
Seeing TSWLM in the cinema in July 1977, that stunt caused a collective intake of breath. You should have heard a pin drop, and what makes it so special is that it’s all in one take, no cutaways due to the fact that only one camera was working by the time the stunt was performed. If there had been cutaways to other camera angles I don’t think it would have had the same impact. So glad I got to see it in the cinema, truly awesome! Always loved the LTK waterski stunt, and while I appreciate the Moonraker stunt the actual pre-title sequence is pretty bad . . . 😳 cue the hate!
Calvin I totally agree. TSWLM stunt is THE one. So simple but absolutely jawdropping - and not a slide whistle in earshot! I saw this in a multiplex in Canada in 1977, they'd teased it all summer in the trailers but to see it played out on the huge screen was unbelievable. Best Moore film I reckon.
A very well put-together list, though I am a little disappointed that you didn’t embrace the theme of the vid and film your closeups whilst falling from a plane. I myself would’ve include more of the skiing stunts - Willy Bognor and his team do some incredible stuff, and make it look so effortless! I once tried to spin around and ski backwards - I got 90 degrees and fell over. It’s a shame we haven’t had any good ski chases since TWINE. Another thing I would also note myself is the Land Rover chase at the beginning of ‘The Living Daylights’, for the notable reason that, for a lot of it, it’s really Timothy Dalton on top of it! That’s dedication to the role, and he performs it well considering his training was at the RSC - don’t think he had much call to cling onto a car in ‘Measure for Measure’, but I could be wrong.
BenCol Thanks BenCol 😁😁 very true that Bogner brought some excellent ski work to the series. FYEO has some great moves. Hope we get more in the near future like you say!
BenCol The Land Rover scene in Measure For Measure is legendary, how could you not know that? How does it go? "My Land Rover, My Land Rover, My Kingdom For A Land Rover".
Exactly but that is what is wrong with lists like this, namely, that the real title of the video should have been 'The Ten Best Bond Stunts In The Bond Films I Like'. Sylvester himself said it was his most difficult stunt.
Well, that was a very fun list! A predicable number one, but it's absolutely the best of the bunch. The moment that parachute opens and one of the skis nearly touches it is just breathtakingly daring: it could have gone wrong so easily! I had expected the GE jump to be higher, given your love for that film. A quick shout-out to the train fight in SF, because the fact that that's actually Daniel Craig putting himself in danger while the insurance team didn't want him to put it on the list for me. And I'm truly sorry for the Eiffel Tower jump in AVTAK, but that suddenly appearing diving board when the stuntman leaps always takes me out of it.
The GE bungee jump actually set a world record at the time it was filmed. My hat is off to stuntman Wayne Michaels who made five jumps in total for this scene.
My ultimate realization after seeing the list: “Jesus there must be ALOT of James Bond fans working in Naughty Dog, I can play most of these stunt scenes in Uncharted! The Plane fight, the Train Chase, just..a lot really!”
10: Motercycle on roof in Skyfall 9: Licence to Kill plane waterski 8: TMWTGG car twist 7: The Living Daylights plane fight 6: Casino Royale crane jump 5: Jumping the Crocodile 4: Moonraker Sky Diving 3: Licence to Kill plane fishing 2: Goldeneye Dam jump 1: The Spy Who Loved Me ski jump
The final fight between Craig Bond and Dominic Green in the burning hotel at the end of Quantum was AMAZING. Green Screaming his head off swing the fireman ax, it was great. Like everything else in Quantum, criminally underrated
I'm so glad.. I like CG but it's far too overused these days to the point that it's a bore.. There's no practical effects or anything in front of the camera for the most part anymore. But Bond is one of the great franchises that keep real film making without cheating with visual effects alive!
@@cookiesontoast9981 Remember that CG and "special effects" were meant to be used sparingly - when you absolutely could NOT make a scene or shot work without them. They were never meant to be the entire thing.
There are a couple of others that I really like - but are both somewhat undermined by 'infamous' presentation. 1) The sequence in the AVTAK pre-titles,when Bond surfs over the small lake and the two Russian skiers come a cropper. A lovely stunt;but people tend to only remember the musical accompaniment. 2) The 'rope falling' sequence in QoS. Wonderful stunt performing;somewhat spoiled by the hard-to-follow nature of the editing (which also bedevils much of the movie, imo)
Great list! My favourites. Just to give a mention to a few stunts not often credited but still very cool to see. 10. The Escape Jump from the Bankers Office in the High Rise building. The World is Not Enough. 9. The final fight scene on the cargo net behind the plane. The Living Daylights 8. The Halo Jump. Tomorrow Never Dies. 7. The water skiing and plane escape sequence. License to Kill 6. The Bungee jump from the Dam Goldeneye 5. The Ski chase on a Bobsled course. For Your Eyes Only 4. The Crane fight and chase sequence. Casino Royale 3. The run across the backs of crocodiles. Live and Let Die 2. The Cliff rock climbing sequence and Free fall. For Your Eyes Only 1. The ski jump from the cliff turns into a skydive. The Spy Who Loved Me.
The ski jump had to be #1, its so perfectly done, luck and a daredevil stuntman, thats all you need. You can see how close they came to catastrophe filming it. You can see one ski get catapulted sideways by the unfolding unionjack. If stuntman sylvester would have pulled the line later, by just a second, the ski would end up inside the unfolding and well...better not think about that. also the jump on the eifel tower is a cool stunt. "Fun" fact. They guy who invented the wingsuit (1890s i think) wanted to show how it works, by jumping the tower...well there was even one of the earliest videos ever made.....but his suit never worked and you can see him crash into the ground full speed
This Video was so amazing Calvin, I have to say my personal favourite is the LTK water ski just for the pure badassery and coolness of it, sad to find out that Dalton didn't do it though
Great list Calvin! I'd love to see your ranking of all 11 Bond film directors, and your top 10 Bond film scores, if you're looking for ideas going forward
Watching (mostly listening as I'm working) to your entire top 10 playlist yet again. Great stuff! Yeah, please DO come out with a top 10 vehicle stunt list!
I mean...Yeah. #1 pretty much HAS to be the TSWLM ski jump. Even people who aren't all that into Bond are probably aware of that moment, it's THAT good.
15:22 This was on one of the Bond documentaries that the falling ski nearly hit the chute and if it had torn it things would have gone wrong very quickly. Amazing. Oddly I think Tom Cruise is one of the few actors attempting proper non-CGI stunts but with things like the recent HALO jump they enhance it so much with CGI lightning etc. it looks fake. Much better to let the stunt speak for itself, classic Bond.
I saw TSWLM on the second day of general release, at the Odeon Leicester Square, in 1977 and I can clearly remember the ski jump got a standing ovation from the audience. Apparently John Glen's last words before Rick Sylvester did the jump was "and remember, you're James Bond"
Calvin's videos are just the ticket if you're stuck at home because of coronavirus concerns. (I don't have the coronavirus, but I'm only leaving the house when absolutely necessary as a precaution)
I cannot believe that you didn't include the ski chase on the bobsled run scene from For Your Eyes Only. Not only is Bond skiing on a BOBSLED RUN but there's a guy on a MOTORCYCLE chasing after him on that very same BOBSLED RUN. THAT STUNT IS INSANE!
Love your top ten videos, you should do top ten final acts next (spy who loved me battle, tommorow never dies stealth ship, sky fall and casino royale house, crappy die another day cgi plane etc.) next
This list jives exactly with my impression of the Bond stunts. That "Moonraker" sky dive opening - it blew my socks of in a theater in the 70's. I didn't care that the movie was trying to ride the Star Wars cinema wave. In fact, I loved this aspect. But that Spy Who Loved me Parachute stunt should be one of the most glorious stunts ever put to film. (That stunt person flipping over and over in "The Road Warrior" is another in this genre - although that was not planned and was a genuine accident with injuries).
Ooh, interesting idea Calvin, and yeah please make a vehicle version of this too. I'm not sure I agree with your number one choice, I'd probably swap it for number 2, but your points for both and the rest of the video are great as always. Also that Max Zorin edit was so funny XD
Calvin, your Top-10 Bond Lists are so much fun to watch! Keep doing these, they're great! :-) I personally think the alligator-jump in Live and Let Die is my personal favorite stunt.
Fully agree with your top two choices. The ski jump from TSWLM was gob-smacking, and could only have been improved by adding a slide whistle! Before you kill me, let me add one honourable mention: the ski sequence in OHMSS, especially when Bond skis on one leg.
Great list! TSWLM ski-parachute is definitely tops, and I love the Octopussy stunts. I also like the fight on the truck at the beginning of The Living Daylights because it looks like Dalton is doing a lot of it himself!
Why is number one number one? It's iconic. Even without ever seeing it before you KNOW it's a Bond film stunt. It stops you dead and makes you go WTF. And it's just absolutely brilliant.
Something I think I’ve only appreciated recently, is how practical the Bond films are. Obviously the early Bond films had to be, but even the newer Bond films still try to keep this alive, and No Time To Die had some pretty great stunts in my opinion. And obviously, the jump from The Spy Who Loved Me performed by Rick Sylvester, like, oh my God. They really need a stunt category at the Oscars, I swear to God.
I've always been properly properly obsessed with the noise May Day makes as she makes the plunge! 😂 I'm so happy you mentioned it. As for me, my alltime favourite stunt has got to be the ski jump from The Spy Who Loved Me. Absolutely outstanding. One of the best things ever put on film. (Haven't got there yet, but praying you share my sentiments and it ends up at #1. 😊
Always loved the skiing down the bobsleigh run from FYEO. Tragically though, apparently a stunt man actually died during filming of one of the ski scenes in that film.
This could go on and on because there are so, SO many. I’m so very glad you mentioned the LTK water ski to plane stunt which is not only astonishing, horribly underrated but brilliantly cut together and built up as the cap to the sequence. That’s why the crocodile farm and bus bridge stunt in LALD also work so well because they’re so well built up. Octopussy’s aerial climax is well done but I’d back up a bit to also include the amazing horse to plane transfer. The TLD cargo fight is the most developed aerial sequence. My only question is where would you have the FYEO Metora climb since we’re talking about vehicle less sequences.
My top 10 Bond stunts? 10. The skydive in MR. 9. The rock climbing sequence in FYEO. 8. The train and plane sequences in OP. 7. The crocodile escape in LALD. 6. The one wheel truck sequence in LTK. 5. The "fishing" sequence in LTK. 4. The plane fight in TLD. 3. The bungee jump in GE. 2. The parachute jump in TSWLM. 1. The parkour sequence in CR 06.
I personally like how Pierce rode the wave in Die Another Day. The wave of critics and fans destroying his movie. He truly handled it like a professional, even laughing at how silly some of the the movie scenes were years later. That said, the sword fight in that movie I feel deserves more credit than it usually gets, though I guess it's not a stunt in the traditional sense. How about a Top 10 choreography fight scenes? :D Anyway, didn't they have someone actually jump with the bike after the plane at the opening of GoldenEye for the wide shot? Right before cutting to the Pierce studio insert shot. That always has been one of my favorites.
Thanks for the video. This is a good list of (mostly) a type of big set-piece stunt that was a 1970s-1989s Bond staple. In addition to a companion stunt driving list I'd also enjoy a list of more personal-scale work -- fist fights, falling off things, being thrown off a balcony into a swimming pool, etc., even including work done by the actors. (Less impressive but interesting)
« Jaw-dropping », I see what you did there Calvin ;))) great video as always ! For me the ranking goes 1) Union Jack parachute TSWLM 2) Dam GE 3) crocodiles LALD 4) Water « skiing » LTK 5) Hercules TLD 6) Skiing on one leg OHMSS 7) plane OP 8) Eiffel Tower AVTAK 9) truck TLD 10) Train OP - HM : skydive MR - DM : tsunami DAD :)
I’ve tried water skiing too in Barbados and I was dreadful at it. So much harder than I was anticipating. It’s so difficult to stay up for more than 2 seconds
The outtakes from the crocodile scene are brilliant, thats was SO dangerous! He nearly got caught, one almost got full hold of his foot. Shame there wasn’t a neat way to include that in the final edit, it had so much more jeopardy than the cut used in the film.
One thing that spoils the Roger Moore stunt on the train is that it's quite obvious it's filmed in the UK. The English countryside is very different to that of East Germany.
Some good picks my #1 is the same and my reaction when I saw it in the cinema back in the day was the same. Hilarious hamming it up there. My #2 would have been Goldeneye which was brilliantly executed on film much like the other was.
The rock climb from For Your Eyes Only deserves a mention, specifically when Bond falls. The whole scene was nerve-racking.
Yes! That is amazing!
I think watching that scene was the final nail in the coffin for me ever trying my hand at rock climbing xD
What an insane fall

Oddly I think Tom Cruise is one of the few actors attempting proper non-CGI stunts but with things like the recent HALO jump they enhance it so much with CGI lightning etc. it looks fake. Much better to let the stunt speak for itself, classic Bond.
4 years old, seeing Bond in the cinema for the first time, made me a fan forever. Went straight out and bought my Corgi Lotus submarine.
The fact that a guy named KANANGA did the stunt in Live and Let Die is crazy.
Hi Calvin I totally agree with your number 1 choice it is absolutely totally bond....and its absolutely incredible.
I saw TSWLM on the second day of general release, at the Odeon Leicester Square, in 1977 and I can clearly remember the ski jump got a standing ovation from the audience.
Apparently John Glen's last words before Rick Sylvester did the jump was "and remember, you're James Bond"
Of course 1977 was the Queen's Silver Jubilee, so the Union Jack would have had added relevance that year.
Calvin's videos are just the ticket if you're stuck at home because of coronavirus concerns. (I don't have the coronavirus, but I'm only leaving the house when absolutely necessary as a precaution)
You chose wisely for the #1 stunt. Subscribed!
Thanks, Jesse! Appreciate it and thanks for subscribing 😁
Ah finally someone who mentions Octopussys plane stunt! Most overlooked Bond stunt ever done!
David281 I feel that whole film is often overlooked when it’s a really fun time!
Love your intonation of the lines - "Helicopter corkscrew." AND "The one that ALWAYS has my balls tense ..."
00Heaven!
Absolutely nobody:
Calvin: putting on a bow tie
The actor who played malaka is known as one of the fathers of free running or parkour.
16:04 I’m getting serious Mr. Bean vibes from your facial expressions lol
Love the fact it is dominated by Moore and Dalton. Good show Calvin
Love your top ten videos, you should do top ten final acts next (spy who loved me battle, tommorow never dies stealth ship, sky fall and casino royale house, crappy die another day cgi plane etc.) next
Your comment in the Moonraker clip...."Jaw dropping"....holy incidental humour!
Love the video... Although I would have liked to have seen you include the breathtaking cliff fall from For Your Eyes Only!
Jolly good list old chap, jolly good indeed. Bravo 👏
Those reaction shots to the ski jump place this in the top ten of Calvin's Bond videos.
That ski stunt is definitely the most insane, one of the ski's bounced off the parachute while it was opening!
The scene on the train where Bond’s feet hit the ground and he jumps over the pipe back onto the train was Paul Weston - great edits!
Great video 10 out of 10
Fully agree with your top two choices.
I know it’s not the biggest in scale, but the jump from CAT digger to train in Skyfall, then adjusting the suit always brings a smile to my face
Back projection on OP is actually pretty good
Really enjoying these videos whilst in isolation. How about a top 10 Bond outfits?
Why is number one number one?
It's iconic.
Even without ever seeing it before you KNOW it's a Bond film stunt.
It stops you dead and makes you go WTF.
And it's just absolutely brilliant.
Ummm goldeneye, plane going off, and pierce’s bond on a motobike going off the cliff and skydiving into the plane to take control!
Always loved the cable car tussle stunt but can’t argue that the parachute is brilliant in it’s inanity
I love the FYEO ski chase; particularly when James almost nails the instructor, and the rest of the class falls down
Always loved the skiing down the bobsleigh run from FYEO. Tragically though, apparently a stunt man actually died during filming of one of the ski scenes in that film.
Such a good scene, especially with the Bill Conti music.
Accident The Bob Sled Runner.
What about the runway jump by zoo in goldeneye?
Can you make a video of best James Bond vehicle stunts.
I like the windsurfing too. On paper it sounds awesome as hell, and the score and Pierce’s look of awesome coolness make the scene feel great.
Love the 007 Nightfire music in the background
I’ve tried water skiing too in Barbados and I was dreadful at it. So much harder than I was anticipating. It’s so difficult to stay up for more than 2 seconds
It's hard to argue with that list! Bring on the top 10 vehicular stunts! The Aston Martin flip from CR better be #1!
What about the Aston flip on DAD? :)
I agree with these picks, but one of my favorites is where bond parachutes out of the back of the falling jeep in The Living Daylights
Kudos for putting that License to Kill stunt at 3! It’s amazing when he lets go and catches hold.
The outtakes from the crocodile scene are brilliant, thats was SO dangerous! He nearly got caught, one almost got full hold of his foot. Shame there wasn’t a neat way to include that in the final edit, it had so much more jeopardy than the cut used in the film.
Can't wait for your next mission impossible review
The crocodile leap in Live and Let Die may be my favorite Bond stunt.
The spider scaring zorin off the bridge had me rolling
Hey Calvin will you do you Top 10 James Bond allies video?
One thing that spoils the Roger Moore stunt on the train is that it's quite obvious it's filmed in the UK. The English countryside is very different to that of East Germany.
Of course at the time it came out, very few Westerners had been to East Germany, so it wasn't as obvious.
Did you ever do a video on ranking the best and worse back screen projection? Seeing that you have a keen eye for these things
Some good picks my #1 is the same and my reaction when I saw it in the cinema back in the day was the same. Hilarious hamming it up there. My #2 would have been Goldeneye which was brilliantly executed on film much like the other was.
#3 crocs. That was nuts.
“The Moonraker skydive is the most jaw-dropping stunt.” No pun intended.
