A tremendous performer with a voice unmatched to this day !!! And I just love this period , because Lana really had a classy and timeless mod look ! Her gowns were insanely gorgeous and that stunning asymmetrical "Sassoon" cut......perfect ! The absolute best time for fashion , art and as witnessed here.....music ! She just sparkles , a true star ! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thanks for this. A gifted singer and performer, and while I purchased all six RCA albums upon their release, it's great to see that she could pull off the same impressive vocals live on TV. Her intonation always amazes me.
Mesmerizing & magnificent, remember years of enjoying watching Lana perform with excellence on various TV Shows, too bad someone this great wasn't able to sustain a decades long career...wonderful clip a reminder of a great singer!
I haven't heard of Lana in years. Put her name in "google" last night and came up with this and a few other links. Lana was my favorite singer when I was a kid. Actually met her when I was in high school and saw her perform at the Plaza Hotel in NYC. She was very nice, permitted me to take a photo of her and then actually signed it for me when I sent it to her.Lana's version of "A Time For Us" on the Sullivan Show was one of the most beautiful musical moments I have ever seen or heard on tv!
Lana is my all-time favorite singer. Sure, she never reached a level of fame like Barbara Striesand; but when it comes to good looks and great voice, she is the most total package I've ever seen & heard. Lana is my nirvana.
Wow. I remember watching this. Her version of "Isn't It a Lovely Day" is one of the all time best. I didn't remember the second song. One of my favorites from THE SAND PEBBLES with Steve McQueen.
She apparently was a child prodigy--had a big voice, played wild jazz piano, and sang her heart out and was gigging all over the place in Australia at an early age... then on to the US to the Ed Sullivan Show! (1951...). By the mid sixties, she was a seasoned veteran! She played the San Francisco Fairmont Hotel regularly in the sixties when I was in high school. It's a tough life ... there are no pat "reasons" why she phased out singing in public--she was a major talent. Period.
@leenerdify I met Lana once in the early 80's as we had mutual friends. Lana IS Lana. She never spoke ill of Carson. And I'm sure she could have. She did extoll extensively over Ed Sullivan who they say was bowled over by Lana's raw talent. Alas, I do not believe it was WHO Lana was that hurt her career. I think Lana was born too late. I come from a big family. My sister, born 1941, loved Lana. Thought she was on a par with Eydie Gorme or Judy Garland (continued)...
Her version of "Since I Fell For You'" from the 1st album is the best ever of a great song. She was the best female vocalist, period. She could sing any genre.
She's So classy and what a voice. I own all of her six LPs from the 1960's. She's now an Entertainment Lawyer I heard in NYC. She was the biggest Australian singing session of her time before coming the US. My Sis lives in Australia now and they still talk about Lana there. Whoever has more vids to post of her, please do. Because, you cannot she enough or hear enough of this terrific talent!
Thanks for your comments. I have her LP's too - bought when they first came out. After being in the music biz for 57 years, I appreciate her talent (and great orchestra arrangements) more than ever! In those days - you HAD to be good to be on Ed Sullivan or Hollywood Palace!
Sadly, the truth is that Lana is pretty much entirely forgotten in Australia, overshadowed by contemporaries like Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton-John and Judith Durham, who all made much bigger names for themselves because of the hits.
I wish there were more of her performances like this to watch. She has a great voice. Gentle on my Mind by her is my favorite version! I am a huge fan. People who sing standards went out of style she has said and too, someone ran off with her money which is why she went into entertainment law.
I feel closer to Lana than anyone....my sister lives in Australia and I juat sent t he rLana live DVD from 1967 for her birthday,s o she could she could see and hear want a great singer is. besdes that, I love your voice so much Lana!
I wish they would release a boxset of her recordings and rare recordings, including this one which I think is the greatest song has she ever sang. I love this by her or Matt Monro (both totally different, but wonderful both).
I was able to see Lana in 1976 at the Doubletree Inn in Tucson, AZ. She opened with a 5 piece band. Her first song was Dancing Machine, a cover of the Jackson 5 song. She played piano on a few songs. Her hair was bleached white as snow which really didn't enhance her appearance. The hotel gave free tickets to the second show she did that night. She was very much on her form that night and it was very enjoyable.
I saw her play Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz" at the 12,000-seat outdoor Muny Theater in Forest Park in St. Louis, where the World's Fair in "Meet Me in St. Louis" took place. Lana was excellent and they interpolated her famous version of "When You Wish Upon A Star" into the show. I wondered if she might be miscast, but she fit the role perfectly and seemed every night to be enjoying herself, even in the sweltering St. Louis summer.
You have been my favorite singer since the sixties; was so hurt when you retired...miss you and still love you, Kiddo. I follow you on Twitter, but you won't like my profile 😉
"Isn't This a Lovely Day" is from her first, fabulous album. What a pity that her career fizzled, though she herself is now a successful entertainment attorney in Manhattan. I think a lot of what happened had to do with her assumed sexual preference.
She's an attorney in NY, not Australia. Sexual orientation is just that, orientation. Not a choice, not a preference. She lives in NYC and Long Island. Pervious lovers include Robin Tyler and Lesley Gore.
@leenerdify Johnny was a miserable person and damaged many careers. Remember the son with the out-of-wedlock child of colour? He died alone (his wife was in Pittsburgh at the time). I'm surprised no one has written a book yet.
Next to Lana, Streisand sounds like a little girl. Lana has more of everything and ranks with Garland and Fitzgerald at the top of all-time female pop singing. Lana's 1st album might be the greatest pop vocal ever.
I am a huge fan of both streisand and lana and see similarities like RCA and Columbia we competing. But I hear more nasal in many notes of streisand. Barbra I guess could reinvent herself each decade and had the movies and TV (and connections) to keep going. I hear Lana had to pay her own musicians near the end of her singing career and the venues got smaller. Maybe the rumors of her sexual orientation hurt because it was the 60s and 70s.
@@dscoggins8257 Barbra didn't need "connections" she kept going because she was an enduring success. The public realized she was one-in-a million, and they supported the different paths her musical talent took her. Lana was more in the tradition of Judy Garland and Vikki Carr, a fine traditional belter. Barbra can do that but so much more. They can't be compared.

Nicely said!

Brava
Second song...great song..
2:45 Great shot of the audience, with everyone well dressed and focusing on Lana.
Lana Cantrell could surely sing!
wow! just discovered her today, lucky me. she's fabulous!
Yep I felt so lucky too😊
Mesmerizing & magnificent, remember years of enjoying watching Lana perform with excellence on various TV Shows, too bad someone this great wasn't able to sustain a decades long career...wonderful clip a reminder of a great singer!
I have a musical background and heard many great singers but Lana is the best

Wonderful style, great voice!
Saw Lana at Melody Fair (Tonawanda, New York) several times in the mid 60's! Still have many of her albums. Her style was mesmerizing.
Lana is my all-time favorite singer. Sure, she never reached a level of fame like Barbara Striesand; but when it comes to good looks and great voice, she is the most total package I've ever seen & heard. Lana is my nirvana.
i still come on YT to watch her vids & listen to her voice. i am a fan from way back:)))
Wow. I remember watching this. Her version of "Isn't It a Lovely Day" is one of the all time best.

GREAT VOICE! I had forgotten about her! Too bad she didn't make it. She should have. She had the whole package!

Damn! I'm in love! Lana has a way of making you feel very good - just like Frank - whenever she sings - anything!
@leenerdify

Thank you this is wonderful! Loved her since 1968. Never forgot her.
Her version of "Since I Fell For You'" from the 1st album is the best ever of a great song. She was the best female vocalist, period. She could sing any genre.

My best girlfriend and I went to. See her frequently. When she was in New York we loved her.
Sadly, the truth is that Lana is pretty much entirely forgotten in Australia, overshadowed by contemporaries like Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton-John and Judith Durham, who all made much bigger names for themselves because of the hits.
Excellent voice and she knew how to properly hold the microphone.
I wish there were more of her performances like this to watch. She has a great voice. Gentle on my Mind by her is my favorite version! I am a huge fan. People who sing standards went out of style she has said and too, someone ran off with her money which is why she went into entertainment law.
Belle voix !

This box set has four or five of her songs:

Her 4 first US albums have been digitally realeased in high-quality. More should come for her 1969 and 70 albums!
What a great loss to the world of music that Lana did not have the great career as an artist she so rightly deserved. A truly great loss for us all.
I am grateful she left so many lovely recordings. And have the career that she did. And I am grateful that she is now a lawyer helping other artists.

I can't agree that her career fizzled. To my mind she left on her own terms and has a great second career.
@leenerdify
I remember that she was on the late night show with Johnny Carson a lot. I wish she would do a come back.
► Thanks for sharing that Dep. ;-)
You have been my favorite singer since the sixties; was so hurt when you retired...miss you and still love you, Kiddo. I follow you on Twitter, but you won't like my profile 😉
Even sounds good from a TV studio band and sound attentuation, can't beat the voice!
Can be compared to Ella Fitzgerald only
Huh?

She didn't fizzle...and the hairdo inspired several hundred thousand similar, in the mid 1960s.
great voice . similar to Toyah Wilcox .
she does a good Streisand - especially the hands and poses
+James Racioppi Are you kidding me? She completely blows Babs away - although she was not nearly as successful, of course.
Cannot be compared with Streisand, as no one can, but I like Lana too.
I disagree. Lana leaves Barbra in her dust! More range and more exciting expression...
Next to Lana, Streisand sounds like a little girl. Lana has more of everything and ranks with Garland and Fitzgerald at the top of all-time female pop singing. Lana's 1st album might be the greatest pop vocal ever.

What? You can't reorient yourself?
