    Greatest artist of all time. The most sampled singer of all time. The greatest showman. Godfather of soul, father of funk, rap music. A true legend.
    To put it in a nutshell: a genius. There will never be another James Brown.

    • @carlbamburg7439

      Uncle Brizz.. Yes, but his band was on fire BECAUSE JB wouldn't settle for anything less.. He PERSONALLY rehearsed and worked that band, and EVERY band he had, into to a fine-tuned machine..
      There's video of James fining band members for missing licks in the middle of live shows.. He would 'flash five' fingers at the player for however many dollars it would be..

    1968 was also the year I discovered James. I'm a little White boy with a new transistor radio. The usual Top 40 wasn't doing it for me one afternoon so I started flipping through channels and came upon 'There Was A Time'. I was compelled to bop to the beat. I'd never heard anything like this. My mother was not amused hearing that come from my room and requested I find a 'station where they play good music'.
    Yeah, right.
    I don't entirely know how visible James was to White audiences then. I know my parents had never heard of him. When I scanned this audience, they appear predominantly White. I'm betting very few people had any clue who he was.
    Later, a friend of mine had me over to is house to listen to records. His way older brother, who was in a band at the time, had a sizeable collection of James' records. Great! I managed to become acquainted with several of his tracks. Legendary.

    • @littlejimmyscumbag2551
      @littlejimmyscumbag2551 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      James Brown is my second favorite artist ever but Elvis was the first "real" entertainer. He put the concept of singing and dancing, show business and lifestyle into one package. Modern celebrity culture largely stems from Elvis. Even musicals like Grease or Saturday Night Fever are largely based on the persona of Elvis and movies like Loving You.

    • @littlejimmyscumbag2551
      @littlejimmyscumbag2551 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Read what I said, "the concept of singing, dancing, show business and lifestyle into one package." Everybody has been singing and dancing since the beginning of time. Elvis' influences came from many black entertainers and many more white entertainers as well as some Latin and European influences. But the concept of the "CELEBRITY" comes from Elvis. He was the first real celebrity where he became a figure onto himself and became apart of the fabric of society. That's the basis for the modern celebrity.

    • @martinowens4147

You'd Have To be braindead not to know exactly what we were experiencing...we took it all in....every perfect funky note, dance move, James' very hip Process, how he carried himself, how the Famous Flames danced their asses off!! And the JB's, James' band never missed a note. James was also known for his infamous "Downbeat." Nobody ever told James what to do, and we loved him for it...He was born for greatness and nothing could stop him. This....Was an Epic night and yes, we felt so lucky seeing James at the top of his game!! James was already known worldwide as, "The hardest workin man in Show Business". A true Original.

      Sorry Tito, But you're insulting everyone who drove miles just to see James perform. Don't tell us we didn't know exactly what we were experiencing. We knew we were the lucky ones so grateful to get a seat. History in the making ......but that was James giving us 200% of himself on stage. So lucky to have seen James perform at the live TAMI production in London along with Barry Gordy's lineup of all the Motown great performers..James Nailed this performance with his band, The J.B.'s backing him up and the Flames dancing to keep up with James. Pity the band that had to follow James on stage.....See, Can't remember who they were. I miss him. His originality.. And Thanks to Amelio Castelo, Singer, Songwriter, producer, arranger and Founder of Tower of Power; all miss James, his dedication to be great and his love of performing for his audience, Amelio wrote a tribute to "The Godfather of Soul" by writing the song "Sometimes we all need a hit of James Brown." It's always in Tower of Power's Lineup.

      As already noted by the previous poster, that was comedic actor Phil Silvers, not Fred Silverman who was a big-time TV executive for many years. Johnny Carson used to joke about him on the Tonight Show back in the day. The Hollywood Palace was a weekly TV variety show that was on ABC if I remember correctly. Phil Silvers was a very funny guy and was the star of an absolutely hilarious sitcom called The Phil Silvers Show from 1955-59 in which he played Sergeant Bilko (some people think that's the name of the show). The show was centered around the antics of a crew of soldiers in a military motor pool. I love that show -- worth checking out if you can find it. They don't make 'em like that show anymore. Think I'll go have a look around youtube....
