Imagine you're a struggling actor. You do a scene for some strange space movie because you just need a paycheck. They wind up cutting your scenes and the movie turns into the biggest franchise in movie history and nobody saw you or knows who you are.
They cut this scene…but they did have him in the trench scene in the original and added the reunion scene in the Yavin hangar. He had an even more brief scene in the original “Batman”…he was the dad that got mugged early in the alley while with his wife and kid. That movie also included William Hootkins (Porkins from Star Wars) as Detective Eckhardt and Billy Dee Williams (Lando) as Harvey Dent.
The Biggs and Luke scenes are pretty good they definitely would've set up Biggs a lot better, his death would've been more impactful to the viewer and a lot more tragic
They were cut for a reason - they didn't advance the plot and felt out of place at the start of the movie (really the start of the whole franchise). One of the dumbest things George did in the special editions was put Biggs and Luke's reunion on Yavin IV, when the audience has no idea who this is. One of many examples of how George is an obsessive nitpicky weirdo who doesn't understand his own movies.
I understand that pacing issues were the reason why some of the early scenes were taken out, but after all these years, I would love for them to be restored and inserted in the movie. To me they are Tatooine gold, and give us a slice of Luke's life that adds a bit of depth to his character, and certainly explains who the "mysterious" Biggs is, and why his death was important to Luke. I think it also adds to Luke's lonliness and frustration of being stuck on Tattoine.
I agree. As well as pacing they wanted to make look even lonelier, even though Owen mentioned that Luke had friends that he could waste time his with. If they did include the scenes, they would have to use CGI to remove the hat that Luke is wearing. The scenes unfortunately were never finished which includes the refining of the acting. I love Mark Hamil, but the acting was not his best. I'm guessing that even though those scenes were cut that it was still useful to Mark as an actor to have shot them. It definitely helped the later scene with Biggs before the battle which was put in the recent editions. 😀 Only people who watch the deleted scene will know that Luke told Biggs that he was the best friend he ever had. This ended up being true, even though Han Solo saved Luke and Obi-Wan sacrificed himself, Biggs gave his life to save Luke when Biggs was young and had not lived a full life. Certainly, the best friend he ever had.
Yes exactly, Lucas could have doctored them up and used some when he redid the originals. All the old Star Wars fans (Like myself) would have loved the additions. The conversation between Luke and Biggs was gold and really part of the story. Then there was Han with the pretty woman in the cantina. Great stuff.
It's not just pacing, it's also really out of place. They were in the middle of a space battle and suddenly they cut into this kid fiddling with junks. Not to mention cutting the scenes means we have no idea whatsoever about the planet c3po and r2 are stranded on. We don't even know if there's humans living in there since the first creature we saw are jawas. It feels alien and it really adds to the atmosphere of the story.
@@farequinas5615The theatrical cut had the worst pacing in the first half. They could've easily cut out most of the boring and insufferable C3PO/R2 scenes before they met Luke, and replaced it with more of Luke's scenes like this. It's also one of the very few scenes in the OT that presents a ground view perspective of the Empire.

Between this and the unnecessary Special Edition changes, I really want to edit together my own cut of the movie.
I agree. They probably could have shown a cut down version if it was not for the hat that Luke had on. That hat would have been too recognizable. You can put it in your version though. Please do it, make a cut for yourself. Also, I think that the family scenes on Naboo from Episode II are great. There is an extended version of this movie. I have it, (on file) but I have to make it into a DVD to see it. The DVD version I already have has them separately.

Of all the scenes cut, they should have left in Luke and Biggs scenes. It gave Luke motivation for leaving Tatooine, why he felt lonely, and how the Empire operated...no one wants to be drafted to fight a war). There was also a scene not included here where one of the Grand Moffs (the one Tarkin argues with at the table scene) discusses why he thinks Tarkin is using the Death Star to boost his ego and it being a liability to the Empire since its not yet operational. That scene gives more weight to the part where Vader chokes the other officer as well. I also think the woman Han Solo with should have also been left in the scene. Leia always referred to Han Solo as a scoundrel, and him being depicted as a womanizer would have backed it up.

Han Solo sees a jedi for the first time in his life while getting a little action in the cantina and his first reaction is "goddamnit, old man, now the empire's comin."

there's something about this grainy film like a grindhouse film all grany and washed up its so fantastic and so appealing for the late 70s it matches very well for grindhouse Science Fiction... speaking of which the Grindhouse version of this movie is available online to stream somewhere...
ABSOLUTE PROOF that Lucas did NOT originally intend for Luke Skywalker to be the son of Darth Vader. At 15:50 Red Leader says to Luke & Biggs: "I met your father once when I was just a boy. He was a great Pilot. If you've got half the skill he had you will do alright".
Everyone knows that George didn’t intend for Anakin to be Luke’s son from the beginning, but this still would’ve made sense. The galaxy didn’t know Anakin is Darth Vader, they thought he died during order 66, so it’s plausible that this guy met Anakin during the clone wars.
Lucas shot a similar Beru-makes-drinks scene for Attack of the Clones, only that time she poured from a pitcher instead of using that machine, and the shot made the cut.
In 1997 I was hoping the Tosche Station parts were to be part of the restored print, for me it was always a thing as the Star Wars book I had since I was a baby shows Luke watching the battle as well as him and Biggs. Its like I was always waiting to see it worked back in. But I can see how it would have slowed down the rapid fire opening sequence.
Damn I like Biggs' style, classic OT civilian fashion. Also I get the sense some of Lando was borrowed by Biggs. Suave demeanor, and the cape of course
I hope towards the end of Andor we see a young wedge and biggs, I also feel like some of these luke scenes could sliced in. Even after Rouge 1 they could have a ep of people escaping or like the rebels fleeing to the different planets.
They should put all of these elements back in for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars 143 minutes long as well as for the other films but it’s going to be expensive
I think the makers just wanted to be sure that the main characters were CLEARLY described at first glance - to an audience of children and families. Biggs might have clouded the first impression of Han Solo and the witch might have done the same for the first impression of Obi Wan Kinobe....clarity was served by limiting lookalikes.
I always wondered what the original dialogue from the scene with Han and Greedo was. They redubbed with lines from the Jabba scene after that was cut from the film.
I wish they kept these in becausewatching Pre-Adventure Luke's day to day would've established a lot of context. Especially seeing Biggs and his other friends.
I’m almost sure that some of this scenes were included on an old ass version of the film. I used to watch it every weekend in my grandmas house. She only had the first chapter of the saga in vhs version, back in 2008 or some.
I wish they would restore these old scenes and put them back into the original movie. I have comic books and trading cards from 1977 showing all these "cut-out" characters. They were a part of the story. And should be re-introduced to the francize. "Don't worry about it, Wormy!" I'm sure the fans will love it. "Or, Whamo....Your gonna end up a dark spot on the down side of a canyon wall!!" I'm sure if it was worth filming, than Lucas was worth telling it. So come on, now. Lets do it!!
I think it works better that we don't show Luke hanging out with friends. It added more mystery to his character and background. As for Vader with the original voice, honestly, Prowse did an amazing job because Vader wasn't JUST about the voice, it was about presence, and Prowse didn't oversell it. So while he lost out on voice dubbing, he still won with the overall Vader characterization.
Great stuff to bad they cut it! That whole scene with beggs and the cateena. The last scene with beggs. Good stuff. Even with vader with his Scottish accent.
Those additional Tatooine scenes are so good. In only a few minutes we get not just a better feel for Luke's life on Tatooine, but a much richer sense of what life is like for ordinary citizens living under the Imperial regime, as well as a simple but poignant story arc for the heroic Biggs. Why didn't Lucas restore those scenes in the Special Edition rather than the pointless Jabba the Hutt scene with Solo?
Wish they would release extended cuts of episodes 1-6 that include all the scenes that were scrapped due to pacing and shortening movie length. Across all 6 there are plenty of scenes that were basically finished, it would be cool to see them put back in.
It's interesting watching this with added context from over 40 years of new Star Wars plot developments. For example, what Biggs says at 4:07 makes a lot more sense when you think about how Owen was able to (spoiler warning) defend his homestead against Reva in the Kenobi series. It's almost like this is what Biggs is referring to, which is a pretty wild coincidence. Owen and Beru would have become a legend in their community for holding off one of Darth Vader's Inquisitors, but it's also possible he lied about the details of that night to avoid drawing attention. He probably told people he got attacked by sandpeople instead, which would make this deleted scene even more continuous with the canon. The milk pouring scene at 5:55 is also pretty interesting because Luke consumes a nearly identical drink in The Last Jedi. No idea if these are all coincidences or if Disney's writers have looked back at unused footage like this for ideas.
Nope, in fact I'm willing to say that you remember the scene with Vader walking down the hallway because it was indeed used in the holiday special from 1978
Were they? I saw the movie in '77 when I was 9, and for years afterwards, I could have sworn that Luke looking up into the sky, and those Toche Station scenes had been in the original theatrical release in Canada, but as the years went by, I began to wonder if I had just jumbled the movie,; the novelization, and the comic book altogether in my young mind.

@@whiskeyvictor5703 I can't speak for all the scenes they are saying were cut. But the outside seen with Biggs was absolutely there. My brother and nephew remember it the same way.
I was able to recognize those two characters in Book of Boba Fett, glad they're canon
What characters?
@The 4th industrial revolution The other two with Luke and Biggs at Tosche Station. For some reason Disney went to great lengths to include a cameo by two characters only known to people who might have found this one deleted scene.
@@ZenMonkeyGod Or to anyone who read the Marvel comics adaption or heard the radio version, which also have the Tosche Station scene. The scene is also quite iconic especially for Brits because it features Koo Stark (Camie) who is famous as Prince Andrew's ex.
There's more deleted scenes not shown here... recently some footage was unveiled extending the scene where Tarkin and Vader discuss the political situation with the bureaucrats. Some of the footage uncovered was about the bureaucrats discussing "the Cosmic Force" in what was supposed to be its first mention.
The "old woman" scene has her yelling, "Will you kids slow down!!" Sources: Fourth draft of the screenplay, AND the Marvel comic.
Yeah, Luke nearly runs her over with his landspeeder while approaching Tosche Station, although the speeder FX were not added because the scene didn't make post. And the extended Death Star briefing scene contains the first use of the term 'Sith Lord' spoken by Commander Tagge.
please post the link. This is so fascinating.
@@GreenCanteenCan't post links in TH-cam comments but it was on Star Wars celebration in 2017. It's an extended unedited version of the "I find your lack of faith disturbing" scene.
Luke looking up in space with the binoculars was in the vintage Star wars story book.
I was at every star wars film on opening day ❤😊
This makes me miss seeing star wars for the first time 😔
"I met your father once when I was just a boy. He was a great pilot. If you have half the skill he had, you'll do alright."
Woah... Talk about throwing a wrench in canon
It doesn't change cannon does it? before Vader he was Anakin and flew in ships. So it matches up right?
@@roguerover30k It does change the canon because no one knows Anakin has children besides Yoda, Obi-Wan, and Bail Organa.
@@FrostDirt The name is a giveaway
Sad all those actors didn’t make cutting room floor…. Could be fun to add these in to full version and run it in a 5 or 6 part episodic series
Honestly, the scenes with Luke and Biggs could be stitched together into a prologue short film separate from the main film. This could give us some more insight on who Biggs is since he’s only mentioned in the first act and is finally seen in the final act of the theatrical release.
Han Solo sees a jedi for the first time in his life while getting a little action in the cantina and his first reaction is "goddamnit, old man, now the empire's comin."
I'm mad that they didn't put Luke with his Tatooine friends in the movie. There was another female character in the movie and it seems like she had more personality than Beru and Mon Mothma.
Would have totally ruined the flow of the movie and likely it wouldn't have been anywhere near as successful as it was.
@@nutyyyy 2:21-5:11 should've been included. The movie was praised for its visuals anyway.
there's something about this grainy film like a grindhouse film all grany and washed up its so fantastic and so appealing for the late 70s it matches very well for grindhouse Science Fiction...
speaking of which the Grindhouse version of this movie is available online to stream somewhere...
If you stop at 13:42, Han nukes Greedo and all of Mos Eisley.
Ummm this was a really good scene
Also wanted to see Biggs more often could of been close with Luke
Luke's buddy in Tosche Station reminds me of Pedro Pascal
In 1997 I was hoping the Tosche Station parts were to be part of the restored print, for me it was always a thing as the Star Wars book I had since I was a baby shows Luke watching the battle as well as him and Biggs. Its like I was always waiting to see it worked back in. But I can see how it would have slowed down the rapid fire opening sequence.
I once took 30 friends in college to see star wars special edition in movie theaters all three of them we had fun u know who u are and ur welcome ❤😊
This was a fascinating video.
luke skywalker, i KNOW WHAT YOU AAAREEEE
15:42 awesome little bit, would’ve loved if George added it in the special editions and just left it opened ended with this guys story meeting anakin
Damn I like Biggs' style, classic OT civilian fashion. Also I get the sense some of Lando was borrowed by Biggs. Suave demeanor, and the cape of course
Imagine if they kept the scene where Han Solo was making out with that lady that would’ve made Star Wars more funky then it was
I hope towards the end of Andor we see a young wedge and biggs, I also feel like some of these luke scenes could sliced in. Even after Rouge 1 they could have a ep of people escaping or like the rebels fleeing to the different planets.
Tosche Station should have its own series, change my mind.
And Biggs should be the main character
They should put all of these elements back in for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars 143 minutes long as well as for the other films but it’s going to be expensive
I think the makers just wanted to be sure that the main characters were CLEARLY described at first glance - to an audience of children and families. Biggs might have clouded the first impression of Han Solo and the witch might have done the same for the first impression of Obi Wan Kinobe....clarity was served by limiting lookalikes.
I've never thought about it this way but it makes so much sense
I love the idea of c3po driving speeders, it just looks funny
I always wondered what the original dialogue from the scene with Han and Greedo was. They redubbed with lines from the Jabba scene after that was cut from the film.
I'm here to see the same Station in The Book of Bob a Fett Ep. 2. Impressive!
Greedo speaking fluent English doesn’t seem that strange seeing as how did speak that on an episode of The Clone Wars.
They just couldn't be bothered making alien languages in the Clone Wars, even Ziro the Hutt speaks English.
Damn!!! That first scene....and the following.....
"This planet? Big hunk of nothing"
"Hi! I'm actor Troy McClure..."
I like this scenes more than those from final cut.
0:47 Luke’s droid sounds like Curly from The Three Stooges.
Alec whacking the shit out of a random british guy is the funniest shit
This have a best acting
I wish they kept these in becausewatching Pre-Adventure Luke's day to day would've established a lot of context. Especially seeing Biggs and his other friends.
0:34 Wall-E.. Is that you? 😁
I’m almost sure that some of this scenes were included on an old ass version of the film. I used to watch it every weekend in my grandmas house. She only had the first chapter of the saga in vhs version, back in 2008 or some.
I love these scenes
Thank god they cut the last scene, or there would be a lot of explaining to do.
Anyone know where you can find the one where Leia says, “And you call yourselves human”?
Empire of Dreams Documentary ;-)
@@TheKarsten75 thank you!
I hope they include this on a remastered version
Wait why is Biggs Freddy Mercury….
The empire drafts ? Those poor stormtroopers
Fun fact
The scene where Luke sees the star destroyer was still put in the manga adaptation and the phineas and ferb crossover
It was also included in the first novelisation, which was released several months before the movie
@@Magmafrost13 cool indeed
I wish they made a reference to this scene in a future Star Wars project
Honestly, this should’ve stayed in the movie.
The absence of a musical score behind many of these scenes hurts the most, imo.
Biggs outfit was 🔥
Holy shit the young woman that calls luke "wormy" is Koo Stark, she had a relationship with Prince Andrew. What a rabbit hole!
Don't you mean a "worm hole?"
The whole Tosche Station scene should've stayed. Biggs' introduction later in the movie is so random and out-of-nowhere without it.
Fantastic docu
I think it works better that we don't show Luke hanging out with friends. It added more mystery to his character and background. As for Vader with the original voice, honestly, Prowse did an amazing job because Vader wasn't JUST about the voice, it was about presence, and Prowse didn't oversell it. So while he lost out on voice dubbing, he still won with the overall Vader characterization.
Here bcs of book of boba fett ep 2
Wow, so much information in a small scene....should' have kept it in..
Music: John Williams(1977-1983)
15:06 Thank God for James Earl Jones.
The first scene was really cool!
2:23 it was Fanthashtic
2:08 DON'T CALL HIM WORMIE YOU WITCH, HIS NAME IS LUKE
Wish they would release extended cuts of episodes 1-6 that include all the scenes that were scrapped due to pacing and shortening movie length. Across all 6 there are plenty of scenes that were basically finished, it would be cool to see them put back in.
This Greedo cut looks muh more tense with him aiming at the viewrs.
You are giving Disney way too much credit, lol.
@@SaberScorpionfr
This is the first time I've realized there was more than one Rodian at Chalmun's.
Would be ironic if Luke did get drafted into the imperial star fleet and ended up on executor under Vader
Some of these scenes were played in 1977. I was there
Nope, in fact I'm willing to say that you remember the scene with Vader walking down the hallway because it was indeed used in the holiday special from 1978
Upvote if book of boba fett brought you here
Biggs scenes were there in 1977.
