    Read the instructions! I run a very high volume Small Engine Repair shop and use my Drill Doctor 500x on a biweekly basis for the last 3 years and I'm still on the original stone. The stone doesn't get hot and I use M7 molybdenum & cobalt bits exclusively drilling 10 gauge steel up to .25" plate with great success. This machine creates a very repeatable sharp true angle split point in half the time it took me with a grinding wheel. Time is money.

    I have been using a drill doctor for many years. When you read the directions on how to set up your drill, it works perfectly! I have sharpened at least 300+ drill bits. Once you learn how to set your drill, there is no better way to sharpen it. Carefully read the directions!!!!!!!! I love this and highly recommend it.

    I have one of these, once you learn the system it's very easy to use with repeatable results and handles size variations in effortless fashion. Some bits will cut like new, others will be adequate. You can sharpen hundreds of bits with one diamond wheel, I've sharpened dozens so far with no noticeable loss in performance. Doesn't take long to pay for itself what with saving time and money not running out to buy new bits every few days. It's also much more portable than bench grinders, making it useful in the field. You're right that it's cheap in all the right places which really just makes the tool more obtainable.

    I’ve been watching AvE videos ever since I accidentally discovered them and usually find them entertaining and educational, sometimes even insightful.
    But let this be a lesson to me, cause you’re way off on this one.
    Our drill doctor has been great!
    My bits are easily as sharp as new, or maybe even sharper than new. Since I took the time to read the directions, and use the the tool correctly, the one that sat in the shop gathering dust at work, is for the first time, being used to do exactly what it bought to do.
    My boss didn’t have the patience to figure it out either.
    This tool has been very useful and still going strong after hundreds of uses.
    Worth ever penny that I didn’t spend on it.

    I have one of these. A friend left a big container of drill bits, maybe 100, out in the rain and didn't want to clean them up so he gave them to me. I cleaned them and then sharpened them all on my Drill Doctor. Everything from as small as the collet would hold to 1/2". It sharpened them all and did a good job. All those bits cut well. If you learn what the positioner is doing you can sharpen bits smaller than can be positioned using the built in device, as long as the collet will hold the bit.

  • @ProbeGT2
    @ProbeGT2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    I have one of these. Once you know how they work, you sharpen a bit in about 2 minutes taking your time. You can blame the tool but i'm a home diy'er and use cheese grade bits from the homeless despot and that thing refreshes them with the perfect angle, perfect grind everytime.

  • @colinsmith6340
    @colinsmith6340 8 ปีที่แล้ว +106

    Direction wouldnt change if hot and neutral are swapped. Its AC, so it doesnt matter. The only thing that sets direction on a universal motor is the polarity of the field coils with respect to the rotor.
    Thats actually a permanent magnet DC motor, usually whats used inside hair dryers etc. The bridge rectifier is what allows that motor to run on AC. It will be electrically noisy though, as the DC from the rectifier wont be smoothed at all.

    • @colinsmith6340
      @colinsmith6340 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yep. Rectified unfiltered DC being fed into a little DC motor spinning its literal gutz out, arcing and sparking like crazy. The wave form drops to zero every 1/100 of a second, and the motor is an inductor, with the commutator acting as a switch, causing huge amounts of RF noise.

    • @kelvinstokes996
      @kelvinstokes996 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Colin Smith Bingo. If you try to run a permanent magnet motor on AC, the shaft will simply vibrate back and forth at 60hz.

    • @zwz.zdenek
      @zwz.zdenek 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Colin Smith Let me add something to the discussion: The worst part of the noise created by the commutator should be suppressed with caps connected directly to the commutator in a star fashion (they will spin along). This removes the noise much better than any external cap or choke. I have tried.
      The input voltage "going to zero" is not correct. When the mains voltage goes to zero, the rectifier disengages and the voltage on the motor is kept by it acting as a dynamo. This part is the worst source of bad power factor. His gadget surely only accounts for the phase shift part of the power factor, but the distortion of the wave is certainly unmeasured because this will have it very bad.

I love it, when I have bigger drill I use my bench grinder. I sharpen drill bits almost every day just to refresh the cuts and it is perfect. Since I bought it, I have changed the grinding wheel once about 3 years ago and I have one spare.

    I had a similar experience with the drill doctor, there is definitely a learning curve! When set up correctly you don't take very much material at a time and it works well. I tried to cut the split point but it didn't go so well. I'm sure with a few more tries, I could have made it work well. Pay attention to the positioning instructions, obviously the most important part.

    Universal motors are not sensitive to the AC line 'polarity'....the direction of motor is controlled by the armature/field wiring...

    • @AS-we9xi
      @AS-we9xi 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This here. AC line changes polarity by definition. I'm going to guess that the motor is actually a permanent magnet, not a series wound universal motor and thus needs dc not ac.

    • @FoodOnCrack
      @FoodOnCrack 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yeah we had to wire AC motors in school and the polarity didn't do shit unless it was 3 phase or you switched the "anchor".

    • @mnemennth
      @mnemennth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      If you knew anything about motors, you could tell just by by looking that this is a PM motor, therefore DC only, hence the rectifier. AvE's power meter is calibrated (they ALL are) for 50/60hz with a pure induction/repulsion AC motor; the Power Factor is completely out to lunch on a DC motor being powered with 120Hz pulsed DC from a bridge rectifier.

    You were obviously having a bad day, I have used this tool for around 10 years and it is very easy to use and works wonders. You didn't have the bit aligned right and you were using too much pressure. Also I have never had to buy a replacement drum because you only need light pressure. I had a machinist measure the hole a sharpened bit made, and it was perfect. He was skeptical like you but soon realized it was a good tool that worked perfect. This tool has saved me tons of money by not having to buy new drill bits. I love your videos, keep them coming!! Good day I say...

Once you get the nuance of the bitey springy things to align the flutes on the bit to the cam on the collet... the tool works quite well. Great, nah. But a quick regrind to save you a trip to the hardware store and ultimately more time for Mr. Molson, hell yeah!

    I have used these before. They work excellent for less expensive bits and will sharpen dozens of them without showing signs of wear on the grinding wheel. Another already said you have to set up the bit position right, but once you figure it out it works wonderfully. I have sharpened bits with these that cut better after sharpening than when new. You can also grind to new angles, which is great for tailoring your drilling needs. Even the split point grinder feature works well.

  • @Abom79

    We got that thing at work and it's always been a pain in the ass to get a perfect grind on. I only use it for small drills because those are harder for me to get ground perfect by hand. Definitely gotta learn the proper way to use it though or it's just gonna make the bits worse off then when you started. Once you got it figured out it's not bad to have around. They guys at work that don't know how to sharpen a drill bit by hand use it often.

      Abom79 I agree. I also prefer the DD for those times when I sit down and sharpen the bucket of dullards all in one shot. But for that "need this bit to get the job done" situation I'm happy that I've learned how to sharpen by hand.

      I have a 750x and can confirm it's nice to be able to adjust the angle so you're not grinding for days the first time you sharpen a new bit. On the other hand, it's nice if all your bits have the same angle so you can set the Drill Dr and forget it.

    Honestly, if you do it right, this thing will make your drill bits look purdy. My teacher showed me this in class and took a drill bit from dull to sharp in 1 minute. I'm not saying it's better than a bench grinder but in some cases it would be better to pop the bit in this thing instead of fiddle around at the grinder trying to get it even

      Yes. Plus, you can't always have a bench grinder in your work truck. I keep the drill doc in my work truck all the time because if I'm using a 2 foot long bell hanger bit and I wreck it on some unseen concrete, I have to sharpen it immediately or my entire day is fucked.

    I have to say that I enjoy your videos immensely. However, I have owned one of these Drill Doctors for quite a few years now. I received it as a present long before I learned to grind by hand. It is especially useful on smaller bits where you'd need to get out the ole' jeweler's loop to grind by hand. True, I did have to spend a few minutes reading instructions and getting used to the cam operation, but it continues to be an absolutely invaluable tool in my humble amateur shop. If I get a Quorn built, it won't probably ever see much action again, but...

    Not sure you gave this thing a fair shake. Sure, the plastic is wimpy, but it's enough to do the job. Sure, you could take the time to learn drill sharpening by hand, but you'd spend years developing the skill to do it reliably and consistently, every time. Or, you can use the Drill Doctor as a jig, which is what it really is, after all. It's no different from the guides you use to hone your plane blades and chisels at a precise angle, and it's actually kinda clever how the cam gives a little change to the grinding angle as you twist the drill. With just a couple of minutes, I've restored a lousy drill bit to smooth, fast cutting.

    To be fair it's a surgical tool, not a brute force industrial grinder. It's got plenty of power & rpms for the purpose and then some. Diamond wheel is fine in my judgement because you're not removing much material and I don't think it gets hot. Anyhow I've had a smaller $50 model since Noah built the ark and the wheel is still pristine. It sharpens bits well so long as the alignment/adjustment thing is right for your bit. I think the twist on some bits have a different pitch than it likes - in that case the alignment's gotta be tweaked by eyeball and that's a trial & error game.

    I bought a drill doctor a few years ago and yes you should read the manual. i purchased the Drill Doctor 750 and overall I have been happy with the results. Getting the basic geometry of a twist drill down may not be that difficult but keeping the cutting edges the same length is the hard part. I have sharpened many twist drills by hand even modifying them for a special job, but the Drill Doctor will give good to excellent results with less headache.

    Awesome! I need to learn how to sharpen drill bits by myself since I don't like plastic junk! As a not so terribly important aside to this discussion, the Dr's motor is a permanent magnet direct current motor, so it's direction of rotation is dependent upon the polarity of the DC current applied. Not the polarity as referenced to ground as in "hot" vs neutral, but rather as in plus vs minus. Love your vids, keep 'em up!!

    • @thorinbane
      @thorinbane 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      angles and reliefs are different, for tougher metals you set the pitch to more than 118 degrees(the normal) Also if you work with bronze at all you need to have a flat, yes a flat on the cutting edge. This dressing will leave it scooped otherwise and your drill will squeal like Ned Beatty in Deliverance. You will still need to touch it up on a bench grinder.

      Sorry, had to do it. Thanx for the tips. Don't do much brass or bronze, mostly steel, aluminum and stainless. I found that if the angles are not the same the drill wants to walk and they don't cut good. You can feel the one side cutting and the other side kind of dragging. I am no sharpening expert, I can sharpen them on a grinding wheel but not nearly as good as the doctor. Definitely a skill to master.

    Someone probably said this already, but if you swap hot and neutral you won't reverse the motor's rotation, since the polarity is switching 60 times a second anyway. The direction of spin comes from which side of the sine wave hits the motor first. Hence with a rectifier you are correct that the rotation will always go the way they need it to.

    Woodworker here. I own both the travel model (hooks up to your drill which is nice because it can be used away from 120vac power) and after using it for a few years I bought the larger indudstrial one (does larger bits, up to .5 inch ) because the travel one uses the red grit as a sharpener and wears out FAST. But there is good news:
    a) the red and diamond deals are just 1" drum sanders so they are actually cheap to replace you can get diamond ones at HF cheaply enough
    b) I've never had to replace my diamond one, ever and I have owned it over a decade. It's sitting onmy shop bench right now because sometimes I use it often. I pry do more metalwork than most DIY homeowners, probably like 5 times more.
    c) Once you learn how to set the tool your cutting/sharpening the drill will go way faster
    d) Trick is to advance the point just a smidge past where the jig helps you to do it.
    1) The jig is set for standard sharpening
    2) Yours was gone or broken... didn't see the before pic of the drill bit
    e) You used it wrong because you have to start with the mark aligned as it shows and rotate quicker and count in 2s until you stop. It must be a fluid motion from 12 o clock to 6 o clock. Then stop and regrip it from 6 to 12 in ONE SMOOoooOOOth motion.
    f) Once you get used to it it is quicker than hand sharpening.
    g) My industrial one stands taller and has more quality plus its thing that kept biting you is designed different so it never bites me ( get the indudstrial version, you'll see what I mean!)
    h) I like how you take things apart before you even use it. Reminds me of me.
    i) I'm as anal as you
    oh...j) The industrial one lets you sharpen at two angles which helps me in a lot of ways. I sharpen cheap steel bits steeper and then by looking at it I know only to use it for wood &
    The shallower angle I use for better steel and they drill metal great and work in wood, too.
    If you ever had to drill a wrist pin out of a car's front end you know that steel is next to impossible and this tool saves you going to the store for 5-8 more drill bits and lets me sharpen at home which saves time & money in the longer run. Really the thing paid for itself just on that day alone for me.
    I'm not much of one for gimmicks ( You BOUGHT a bench grinder, dude, I MADE one from a used washing machine motor, a farmer's arbor, a V belt, some 2 by 4s, some concrete and a piano hinge. Cost me all of about $7 for the belt everything else was recycled/reused/scavenged. I even made my own polishing and buffing pads. Oh, I did spend a couple of bucks on electrical switches and boxes but that is only because I used both windings and made a 2 speed grinder/wire wheel/buffer. Lately I even added casters so I can roll it out of the way in the shop.) and I will defend this thing to the day I die as not a gimmick.
    I think even the plastic on mine is better. Oh, I see...mine is discontinued (read the reviews on that one, MUCH better product... methinks yours was redesigned for "planned obsolence" & sometimes being the last one to a trendy item you pay that price. )
    damn, it won't paste my link. Try going to drilldoctor.com and check out the classic model 500 & 750... but now that they are discontinued you'd have to find a used one and guys as smart as me will never part with it (nor would most of the reviewers I see who own these models) or you can just keep sharpening by hand.

      +BikingMNViking the motor turns slower and doesn't bog down so easily, the amount of metal taken off per sharpening cycle is adjustable (end stop in the drill loading station), increasing or decreasing relief is straightforward, and they've completely re-done the point splitter so that it's no longer possible to oversplit the point. And a single chuck now handles all the way up to 3/4".

    • @dbeierl
      @dbeierl 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      BikingMNViking Darex customer support sold it to me for ?$60? after I complained that the angle-setting finger loop on my old one had broken. I had to send a photo of the cut-off cord from the old one.
      The angle-setting on the new one is continuously variable, with two little depressions to screw the locking knob deeper at 118 and 135. It's the least successful feature of the machine as you have to tighten it hard and then it's hard to loosen. I made a knob with better grip for use with variable angles, just use the supplied knob for fixed.
      My original 500/750 had a very fast motor that required a very light touch to keep from bogging. Once I learned the light touch it was no problem. There may have been a production change in the motor, I think mine was a pretty early one.
      The new point splitter goes straight in, when it bottoms out you're finished. When you're not splitting there's a grit catcher that plugs into the hole, or you can put a vacuum hose there.

    I have used one for quite awhile and have good results. Bought mine on sale, and it even came with a spare wheel.
