  • The first in a series! Learn about Carolco, an ambitious and innovative film and television production company known for their big budgeted movies going well past the millions, which eventually led to their downfall. We are currently in the process of making more of these, so let me know in the comments of what you think about this.

Wow! In an hour, I went from having limited knowledge of Carolco's history and backstory to understanding why the return of the Carolco name is big news. I was never quite interested in this company before, but this production has changed that for me. If great effort like this is put into future productions, then I can only see success for this series!

The director of First Blood, Ted Kotcheff, had a traumatic experience earlier in his life working as a director of television drama in the UK in the 1950s.
He was in Manchester directing an episode of ABC Weekend's drama anthology series _Armchair Theatre_ called "Underground", depicting survivors of a nuclear attack sheltering in the London Underground. It went out live across the ITV network on 30th November 1958. It starred Warren Mitchell, Patricia Jessel, Donald Houston, Peter Bowles and Gareth Jones. Jones, who was 33 years old, complained of feeling unwell while in makeup between scenes. He collapsed and died shortly afterwards. Ironically his character was to die of a heart attack during the course of the play.
Peter Bowles (who himself sadly died this week at the age of 85) would later recall: "During transmission, a little group of us was talking on camera while awaiting the arrival of Gareth Jones's character, who had some information for us. We could see him coming up towards us, but we saw him fall. We had no idea what had happened, but he certainly wasn't coming our way. The actors started making up lines, 'I'm sure if so-and-so were here he would say'..." Bowles' account has been contradicted several times, including by Kotcheff, who recalls that he saw Jones being carried away from makeup by two men behind the scenes in order to attempt resuscitation. A doctor and nurse were on set due to the amount of rubble required to be dropped on set, but it was to no avail for Jones.
_Armchair Theatre_ producer Sydney Newman instructed Kotcheff to continue and shoot the play "like a football [soccer] match", and follow the actors as they improvised a way around the missing actor. Kotcheff quickly restructured the play during the commercial break and directed on the studio floor in order to bring the play to a conclusion without the missing character being noticed. A young and inexperienced production assistant by the name of Verity Lambert would become vision mixer in the gallery while Kotcheff was in the studio itself. Lambert would go on to be the founding producer of _Doctor Who,_ a co-creation of Sydney Newman, and produce several television series and films until her death in 2007 at the age of 71.
It would only be once they had gone off air that the actors were informed of Jones' death. Donald Houston was a close friend of his, and Bowles opined that Houston would have been unable to continue with the play had he known what had happened.
Earlier in the day, the cast bought a crate of beer to drink on the train back to London to liven up the journey home. This evening, however, it felt more like a wake. Jones' share of the beer went untouched throughout the journey.

Now that's a history if I ever saw it. Lots of effort put into it and a excellent overview of Carolco Pictures. I will be certainly looking forward to the next Rise and Fall video in this series. The people who made this did a fantastic job doing all the research that needed to be put into this project. There is one thing however that I noticed missing. In 1990, Carolco started their Home Video unit Carolco Home Video releasing their film library onto home video formats. The label then ended in 1993 when Live Entertainment took over releases for the rest of Carolco's library. Other than that. Fantastic work!

Regarding Cutthroat Island, the film didn't hurt Carolco that much because they had already filed for bankruptcy before its release. There was no real marketing campaign behind it, and it was not released as widely as other big flops like 47 Ronin and Pluto Nash.

Good job; as for Caroloco, they definitely had their moments, but it looks to me like they never really made any money due to having to pay certain actors large sums to lure them away from larger companies. I admire their ambition though, and I feel many of these films are very good, it just wasn't demonstrated by the Box Office take. In a way, their story is similar to Cannon films, except I think Carolco aimed higher.

Crédit Lyonnais Bank Nederland or CLBN was Carolco's main financier. So it's no surprise that they ran a foul after 1992. In 1992 CLBN went bankrupt due to its Hollywood deals as well as a failure in the Italian film market. This along with Giancarlo Paretti's looting and embezzlement at MGM caused the bank to effectively collapse in 1995, two years after it had siezed control of Epic Productions, Trans World Entertainment and Vision P.D.G International. Crédit Lyonnais Bank was notorious for trying to bury any bad debt accumulated from the Hollywood deals and that along with Executive Life Insurance is what killed Carolco's main backer.

So many of my favourite films of the 80s made by Carolco, with such hits it's amazing that some of their quality product lost so much money. Just one thing; i don't think Minority report was based on Total Recall as It is a short story in it's own sense by Philip K Dick. Possible they included elements although i can't think of any right now and i have read almost everything by Dick

While I do appreciate the effort put forth here it is quite distracting to hear the narrator mispronounce nearly every name given. It also sounds like he is reading. There should be more organic commentary over something like this. Another thing that would improve it would be a few interviews of the principal players in this story. The BTS is good but there needs to be some other personalities involved in telling the story. Overall a good effort but I think it could be refined.

1982's Mother Lode which Agamemnon Films and Carolco Pictures were co-presenters and co-producers of the film's latter. Lionsgate
and StudioCanal co-distributed both in the US and Canada. On November 1979, the NE library was now owned by Sullivan Holdings LLC.
On November 1981, it was re-folded and re-named into both Sultan Entertainment LLC and New Line Cinema/Warner Bros. Pictures, a Time
Warner Company. Some of the most successful films which New Line did very well were the Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street,
House Party, Mask, Dumb & Dumber, City Slickers, Bill & Ted, Friday, Austin Powers and Rush Hour film franchises. From April 25, 1985-
present, most of the titles including The Red Balloon, Mother Lode, Hamlet and the Bill & Ted trilogy were owned by Paramount Domestic Television,
a Viacom Company. The Last Winter, Zulu, The Graduate, The Lion in Winter, The Producers, Carnal Knowledge and others were
owned by Columbia Pictures Television Distribution. The Sure Thing, A Chorus Line, Hope & Glory and others were owned by
Warner Bros Domestic Television Distribution. The Last Emperor is now owned by Lionsgate/StudioCanal. Gaslight Follies,
Golden Girl, Death Ship, Carbon Copy, Winter People and The First Power are owned by NBC Universal Television Distribution.
Sadly to say, NE was finally shut down on Friday, October 18, 1991 and now Time Warner's New Line Cinema unit along
with Sullivan Holdings LLC and Sultan Entertainment LLC joining forces together with their newest libraries of films
and television, 6 years later in the spring of 1997.

Anthony Clark Who were affected by 1989?

    • @anthonyclark9441
      @anthonyclark9441 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Mr. Eazy-E MAN 1989 was a disappointing year for a lot of the most anticipated movies of that year. Outside of the huge Summer season, studios mostly lost money. The Horror genre suffered the most, as the top movies of the genre (Friday the 13th 8, A Nightmare on Elm Street 5, and Halloween 5) all disappointed with Fan reception and Box Office effectively killing those franchises for a while. '89 wasn't kind to Carolco either, as noted in the Documentary.

It was OAK Industries, an indie TV/film production company was owned by Arnold Schwarznegger in October 1975 - which co-produced
some of Carolco's biggest hits: Red Heat, Total Recall, T2. All three were distributed by Columbia-Delphi under SPE from 1988 to 1991.
On the small screen, OAK has co-produced the Emmy Award winning Dynasty on ABC which lasted nine successful seasons from
1981 to 1989. Back on the big screen again, OAK has developed, financed and produced several major successes along the way for
other filmmakers including Richard Franklin's first US film was Psycho II (1983/1984) for Universal with Anthony Perkins, Meg Tilly,
Vera Miles and Dennis Franz. The latter was a major box office success to its sequel, the Oscar nominated Psycho. It did well at the time
for Universal and went on to became an cult following for all ages. But the indie production company isn't going anywhere,
      OAK Industries remains the same.

StudioCanal with successes like The Silent Partner, The Changeling, Tribute, My Bloody Valentine, Atlantic City, Funeral Home, the Rambo trilogy, Red Heat, Steel Magnolias, Total Recall, L.A. Story, T2, Basic Instinct, Universal Soldier,
Cliffhanger and Stargate. Both of them from 1995-present.
