Straddling the Equator, the islands of Sao Tome and Principe form a volcanic archipelago known as “The Islands in the Middle of the World.” Situated off the coast of Gabon and isolated from the rest of the world, this is one of Africa’s smallest countries. The population is a mix of the descendents of slaves and the original Portuguese colonists. In these unspoiled islands, where Nature is so generous, the inhabitants of Sao Tome and Principe enjoy a paradise of jungle, mountain and ocean.
Márcio GONÇALVES has always felt a very close bond with the sea. So, naturally, he has become the guardian of this vital, living element. He works for MARAPA, one of Sao Tome’s first environmental protection NGO’s. Thanks to this organization Marcio has been able to live out his dream of protecting his unspoiled island and the wildlife that live there.
Diamantino VASCONCELOS is a farmer and like most of the islanders, he has a patch of land for his own use in the middle of the forest. There, he harvests the bean that is the symbol and pride of his country: cocoa. Everyone in the neighborhood knows and likes Diamantino thanks to his great talent as a singer and actor…
Maria DO CEU MADUREIRA is Portuguese but she has adopted the island of Principe as her home. She is doing research in ethnopharmacology for the prestigious University of Coimbra in Portugal. She is a specialist in plants and their medicinal uses. Discovering new treatments to relieve and heal people is the goal of Maria’s whole life and why she is tirelessly hikes through the mountains of these islands.

Ta da! 🎉Welcome to Saõ Tomé and Principé! For another elegiac episode of Somewhere on Earth. What an amazing place and I have to be honest - I had not heard of this tiny island nation previously. Straddling the Equator, the islands of Sao Tome and Principe form a volcanic archipelago known as "The Islands in the Middle of the World." Situated off the coast of Gabon and isolated from the rest of the world, this is one of Africa's smallest countries. The population is a mix of the descendants of slaves and the original Portuguese colonists. In these unspoiled islands, where Nature is so generous, the inhabitants of Sao Tome and Principe enjoy a paradise of jungle, mountain, and ocean. We meet Mario, Diamantino and Maria - they individually introduce us to their world on this island paradise. Enjoy!
Watching now🤗. . .
Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him Who sits on the throne, And to The Lamb, forever and ever.

Thanks for this video 🙏
One of my Bucket List places to visit..
oh same here. It’s such a wow place. In a serene quiet way. Awesome
I want to come with you, Let's go explore the beautiful island of Sãõ Tõmē
Currently living there man and it's great
I was there in January. Its beautiful and rich in nature. Snorkeling is better in Micronesia though. They got a problem with recycling and garbage disposal. The infrastructure is not very developed. People are scaming a bit but are all over very friendly. Crime level is pretty low. The beaches are the best part but more in the southwest. Equatorial Island is nice also for snorkeling. And ofc Jean Carlos Silva 😊
Don't destroy that place with mass tourisam....
This is amazing, it feels nice to get to see the world like this.
I have a problem with conservationists frustrating such societies that use nature sparingly and try to disadvantage them by advocating for abandonment of this sustainable reliance on it instead of going for the real culprits of environmental degradation.
I can see that everyone are happy. Life is simple
Sooooo underrated! Such a beautiful country/island. My fave after Eritrea. Much love from the states y'all ✌
It feels so blessed to see that there is such places on earth what is not destroyed by money mongers in the name of "Development".
Beuatiful documentary. Making me want to join a NPO in São Tomé and Principe to protect this beautiful place and support the people who are living there
please do so, we need people like you
Please do
The garbage issue is the biggest Problem i guess.
Would like to participate too, for the protection of their ecosystem and educate people there about nature
I am glad she took the kids to the forest for practicals. Thank you.
My country Namibia played with Sao Tome and Principe today. I decided to research about this.
Never knew of this beautiful and enchanting little country and tropical paradise...Thanks for this video doc. !
Don't go and mess up the place and people please 😅😅😅😅😅😅
Great documentary.
Thanks for taking us to these unseen places of the world 🌎
Has none of the disease that plagues the USA, like transformer people and drag time for kids, liberals, lying politicians, predatory banks, lying & censoring media, A.I., fentanyl, everybody trying to back stab everybody, climate grifter$, GMO food, etc etc etc.
Ai...
I love the islands of Africa!
The takeaway "if you don't have a dog, hunt with a cat." Cocoa harvester [You still can be happy[mine]
I have some of those same coco on my property in Jamaica , they are the very same .
Atleast somebody is preserving and studying nature in it's original form.
Fascinating story about Maria who is very keen in the discovery of plants as medicinal substitute. Her education for her pupils will earn them a lifetime ❤️
The documentary about Sao Tome and Principe is a heartfelt tribute to the untouched beauty of these islands. The lush jungles, the sea, and the warm community are captivating. Márcio, Diamantino, and Maria's dedication to preserving this paradise is inspiring. Thanks for sharing this incredible story of nature and people.
The digging out of a pirogue looks like less efficient use of the wood
A small chain saw could be used, the man who cuts down tree, could be trained or other person. The wood could be removed in one or two pieces. As wood is valuable, the wood removed could be used in construction etc.
This is interesting ☺️..I would really love to live here. Nature at its best!
Túthi kúú 😊
São Tomé 🇸🇹 is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! ❤️
Correction:
The habitat there are the African descendants who were there before slavery and after slavery and the descendants of colonists
I enjoy every second of this documentary
nice, clean and beautiful
Salute to the governor's of this small country, that's rarely known by the world, for their efforts in preserving it's forest and supporting natural health remedies.
From the Philippines; THANK YOU for choosing to be the good stewards of GODs blessings to us all. 🤍
Our government doesn’t do anything, they just steal from our country. All of that are mainly from private initiatives.
The people living in the islands live a very simple life yet very much contented.
So, it's not about the race but a good culture that makes a peaceful community.
Blessing and honor and glory and power Be to Him Who sits on the throne, And to The Lamb, forever and ever.
Thank you. But who is the lamb you talk about?
How wonderful ❤️
When trees are cut down to make boats, a small chain saw could be used to cut wood to shape inside of boat. It could be cut in one or two long pieces that could be used, in construction etc. The use of machetes to shape inside of boat is wasteful. A small chain saw could create a good finish. The man who cuts down tree with big chain saw could be trained to use small chain saw, or other person. Good wishes.
Thank you so much for this great documentary. 😊 It was so nice to watch and learn all these interesting facts about Sao Tomé.
Amazingl place love it's natural beauty.
Never seen a country that is natural
Thanks to this i have learnt that it's in Africa .
Thank you so much for the fantastic documentary!
Beautiful kids

A) Sao Tome is beautiful B) Dismantlino is a character lol
Nice... Video..
A beautiful capture of these paradise islands, thank you! I am actually putting together spiritual, health and wellness journeys/retreats for conscious and caring people where they interact with locals and of course giving back. There are not a lot of untouched prestine places left on this planet, look at Bali, Hawaii, Maldives etc. These beautiful islands should be respected and left as it is with the cooperation of sustainable tourism for the consious travellers. This means by invitation only. People need to feel the Spirit of the place and the people. I`m also going to assist local artists selling art. Well, you can`t buy happiness....
Have seen this country playing against Nigeria for the first time today
Beautiful place❤ 👍👍👍

God bless Maria fir her efforts
Nice🇸🇦

Thank, beautiful place and people. Is it possible to visit, what time of year is best? Enjoy our beautiful ocean planet.
If you like hot climate and rain, go around December. If you like to enjoy 17-25 degrees with no rain go around June - September. Those are the time where we have such lovely activities and events happening in our country.
Foarte interesante, aceste documentare, păcat că nu sunt titrate în limba română!
Your contribution to science and humanity was revealed and taught to you by these old black traditional teachers. Please let's give God and these old folks a big thank you.
Good job
E falam um Português lindo.
It is because the island was a former colony of Portugal (colonizer). Just like Brazil.
Portuguese is not a beautiful language
@@jenmar9428 Yeah! When the first interviewee started to talk, I remembered this.

How can I know more about this lady who makes the Medicinal Herbs? I'm interested to learn. Did she take notes form the lady? How do I get in Contact with her?
The woman from Portugal could possibly be contacted through her University.
Same here needs her contact.
decendence of slaves how???
Hello, I´m from São Tome and Prícipe....The islands were discovered and colonized by European-Portuguese navigators... when they arrived there the island was uninhabited, so the colonizers went to get slaves from other parts of Africa such as: Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique, ect.... and from the union of these slaves the population of São Tomé and Príncipe was born
@@EdmauraFonseca-lo5hm That's a lie they teach you at school, there was already an indigenous population, which the Portuguese failed to enslave, so instead they brought over slaves from Kongo. My family is Sao Tomean
This is a very unknown country that people probably don’t know
Help is coming brother... sooner than you may think.

Possibly mist,
Much love from a Portuguese living in Canada
I love these documentaries but I cannot listen to the american narrators after the british ones :(
Perhaps subtitles could work, or Maritime English. The World Maritime University in Sweden can assist with Maritime English or other interesting subjects.

It's nice to think of some mystic world of healing but if you have proper medication just take it. Dosage and active ingredient can better be controlled and monitored. This looks like a nice and friendly place.
Noisy N
You really N to comment on their peaceful lives
@Seekazon . 1.3M views . 1 day ago ❤
So does the female healer get financially compensated for all her intellectual property i.e. knowledge and recipes. Or is she being exploited for someone else to go research and patent her medicinal formulas?
science still studying God❤
What language is it they speak there?? Can an american visit
If you got paper you can visit anywhere in the world
They speak Portuguese
Majority of African States are open to Americans and Europeans. Actually, about 90% are allies of the US. However, there are those with security challenges. But this one is safe, open, and welcoming. Still, you must travel via Europe, Middle East, or South Africa to get there. All the best

Oh Lord we need the Gospel of Jesus Christ over there, beautiful place and people but still in the dark
maria will sell the info to pharma corps.. the end
That's exactly why I am concerned about their presence in my country. They exploit our people, take advantage of our resources, and contribute nothing to the development of our nation. They keep the profits for themselves and sell the products back to us at inflated prices, just like a commodity. NATO countries lack a sustainable approach and disregard the well-being of our innocent citizens who are unaware of the realities of the outside world. I am willing to sacrifice my life to protect my people from such exploitation.
Westerners n Europeans really change the boarder lines in Africa. Never before seen so many countries on 1 continent. Countries within countries with presidents n economy. Africa is the biggest joke I've ever had
Indeed Allah is to whom the keys of Heaven and Earth belong.
He gives abundantly to whoever he wills and gives sparingly to whoever he wills.
He has full knowledge of all things.
NB: Let's live to appreciate his creation and make use of it for every answer to our questions surrounds us.❤
Good luck preserving a small country that allows polygamy and 9 children is the norm. Overpopulation is the biggest issue and will resolve itself automatically when the natural limit is reached. One way or another.
More positively, beautiful nature! Would definitely like to visit on a budget/eco trip!
I don't like the music
Mankind is more important than turtles and trees. Actually, everything there is was created for Mankind.
Human kind are stewards of the Earth, this includes women, and children.
Read and study Holy Bible. Jesus IS Lord.
A Big Heads Up!!!
Exodus 10:21-22 may be about to repeat.
This topic is highly [CENSORED] so please see my reply here.
Why would you bring that up here in the comments of this video?
So Those young men are supposed to look up to men who wear dresses smh. I don’t understand women are in the community so why not allow them to play the female role .
Because we follow the tradition
I guess it’s sort of like Shakespeare plays how men also played men and women roles
