Straddling the Equator, the islands of Sao Tome and Principe form a volcanic archipelago known as “The Islands in the Middle of the World.” Situated off the coast of Gabon and isolated from the rest of the world, this is one of Africa’s smallest countries. The population is a mix of the descendents of slaves and the original Portuguese colonists. In these unspoiled islands, where Nature is so generous, the inhabitants of Sao Tome and Principe enjoy a paradise of jungle, mountain and ocean.
Márcio GONÇALVES has always felt a very close bond with the sea. So, naturally, he has become the guardian of this vital, living element. He works for MARAPA, one of Sao Tome’s first environmental protection NGO’s. Thanks to this organization Marcio has been able to live out his dream of protecting his unspoiled island and the wildlife that live there.
Diamantino VASCONCELOS is a farmer and like most of the islanders, he has a patch of land for his own use in the middle of the forest. There, he harvests the bean that is the symbol and pride of his country: cocoa. Everyone in the neighborhood knows and likes Diamantino thanks to his great talent as a singer and actor…
Maria DO CEU MADUREIRA is Portuguese but she has adopted the island of Principe as her home. She is doing research in ethnopharmacology for the prestigious University of Coimbra in Portugal. She is a specialist in plants and their medicinal uses. Discovering new treatments to relieve and heal people is the goal of Maria’s whole life and why she is tirelessly hikes through the mountains of these islands.

Ta da! 🎉Welcome to Saõ Tomé and Principé! For another elegiac episode of Somewhere on Earth. What an amazing place and I have to be honest - I had not heard of this tiny island nation previously. Straddling the Equator, the islands of Sao Tome and Principe form a volcanic archipelago known as "The Islands in the Middle of the World." Situated off the coast of Gabon and isolated from the rest of the world, this is one of Africa's smallest countries. The population is a mix of the descendants of slaves and the original Portuguese colonists. In these unspoiled islands, where Nature is so generous, the inhabitants of Sao Tome and Principe enjoy a paradise of jungle, mountain, and ocean. We meet Mario, Diamantino and Maria - they individually introduce us to their world on this island paradise. Enjoy!

I was there in January. Its beautiful and rich in nature. Snorkeling is better in Micronesia though. They got a problem with recycling and garbage disposal. The infrastructure is not very developed. People are scaming a bit but are all over very friendly. Crime level is pretty low. The beaches are the best part but more in the southwest. Equatorial Island is nice also for snorkeling. And ofc Jean Carlos Silva 😊

I have a problem with conservationists frustrating such societies that use nature sparingly and try to disadvantage them by advocating for abandonment of this sustainable reliance on it instead of going for the real culprits of environmental degradation.

When trees are cut down to make boats, a small chain saw could be used to cut wood to shape inside of boat. It could be cut in one or two long pieces that could be used, in construction etc. The use of machetes to shape inside of boat is wasteful. A small chain saw could create a good finish. The man who cuts down tree with big chain saw could be trained to use small chain saw, or other person. Good wishes.

I am actually putting together spiritual, health and wellness journeys/retreats for conscious and caring people where they interact with locals and of course giving back. There are not a lot of untouched prestine places left on this planet, look at Bali, Hawaii, Maldives etc. These beautiful islands should be respected and left as it is with the cooperation of sustainable tourism for the consious travellers. This means by invitation only. People need to feel the Spirit of the place and the people. I`m also going to assist local artists selling art. Well, you can`t buy happiness....

That's exactly why I am concerned about their presence in my country. They exploit our people, take advantage of our resources, and contribute nothing to the development of our nation. They keep the profits for themselves and sell the products back to us at inflated prices, just like a commodity. NATO countries lack a sustainable approach and disregard the well-being of our innocent citizens who are unaware of the realities of the outside world. I am willing to sacrifice my life to protect my people from such exploitation.

Westerners n Europeans really change the boarder lines in Africa. Never before seen so many countries on 1 continent. Countries within countries with presidents n economy. Africa is the biggest joke I've ever had

Indeed Allah is to whom the keys of Heaven and Earth belong.
He gives abundantly to whoever he wills and gives sparingly to whoever he wills.
He has full knowledge of all things.
NB: Let's live to appreciate his creation and make use of it for every answer to our questions surrounds us.❤

Good luck preserving a small country that allows polygamy and 9 children is the norm. Overpopulation is the biggest issue and will resolve itself automatically when the natural limit is reached. One way or another.
More positively, beautiful nature! Would definitely like to visit on a budget/eco trip!

So Those young men are supposed to look up to men who wear dresses smh. I don’t understand women are in the community so why not allow them to play the female role .

Salute to the governor's of this small country, that's rarely known by the world, for their efforts in preserving it's forest and supporting natural health remedies.
From the Philippines; THANK YOU for choosing to be the good stewards of GODs blessings to us all. 🤍
