  • fishing with hot dogs. Another fishing video and yes another experiment worth watching. This time I'm fishing using only a hotdog as bait. Fishing in the Yarra channel under the West Gate Bridge for just over 1 hour I manage to catch over 50 fish. Wow!! Surprising which house hold items make good bait and having no other bait available I decided to fish with hot dogs or skinless Frankfurt's on a paternoster rig and the results were very surprising.
    So next time your keen to have a fish and don't have any pilchards, worms, blue bait, pipis or mussels hanging around why not give hot dogs or even bread a go. You will be pleasantly surprised.

The whiting video is a work in progress, Im hopeful it will be in a week or so. Its a very detailed vidoe with so many tips, techniques, in action footage that the final recordings and editing phase are quite lengthy for this one. I think its going to be a really informative one so im trying not to rush the editing process. Fingers crossed in a week it will be ready. If we go into lock down it may give me more time for editing. LOL. Thanks again !!

    Great video mate. Just shows when they're hungry and competing with each other for a feed, they will eat anything. Reminds me of when I was in my mid teens, (probably 1990-92), me and my mates, between four and six of us, used to have our own fishing comps in the Maribyrnong river, up around Kealba. Just catching carp, tench, roach and the odd redfin. I was always runner-up to my best mate, every time. He always won, and I always came second! Always! This one day, probably the fifth comp, he had three fish and everyone else, myself included, had zero. I was sitting back eating fish n chips, having given up basically, and on a whim, threw some chip on the hook, and bang, up came a fish. A roach. So it was 3-1. More chip on the hook. Then another roach! Now it was 3-2! All of a sudden, it was game on! In the end, I still came runner-up though. I never did beat him. (I always won the table tennis comps though!) But when maggots, worms, bread and corn don't work......how about some hot chips fishy's!!!

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Darren. Thats a classic about the chips and the roach. It really is amazing what baits fish will take and as you said when there in good numbers competing for food they'll take just about anything. I used to do the same near pipeworks many years ago but ran into a couple of very big snakes down there and havent been since. LOL

    • @Doodsy1975
      @Doodsy1975 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fishingmad Yep, snakes were an occupational hazard of fishing those riverbanks. Had a couple of snake tales myself. I remember one sliding right past my rod holder that I obviously was nowhere near, as a fish was trying to drag my prized Juro quiver tip rod into the river! That was a tough decision to make. Lucky it wasn't a big fish, and i retrieved the rod after Mr.Brown snake had slid away.

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah i get pretty weary of snakes at times. Close calls are always a tough thing, I once had a big tiger snake wrapped around my rod fishing along the barwon river, bugger stayed on the rod for a while so i had to sit and wait for it to leave and also had a few good bites on the rod that i had to just watch. Similar story fishing at Moorabool close encounter with a tiger snake there. Infact ive had a lot of encounters with tiger snakes. Just walking around near, keilor, cherry lake etc seems to be choc full of them. I think ill need to get myself some decent protective shoes and leg wraps this season. As no doubt ill put myself in some pretty vulnerable situations. Not sure if you have any suggestions ?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I never really had any issues with the hot dogs falling off. These were the pre cooked ones. What I would say is try using raw chicken, and salted pilchards that's probably the best bait option in that area. The hot dogs was more of an experiment which worked well but the other baits mentioned are tired and trusted

I want to start doing some bayside fishing but no idea where to start! Are the fish edible from that part of the Yarra? Are there any other spots there or around to the east of the bay that is worth dropping a line in?

It will be personal preference on whether you think the fish are safe to eat from those systems but you also have the bay close by and lots of land base fishing options where the water is clean and some good species like snapper. Places around port Melb example are terrific, We do have a FishingMad Members website which was built to really help beginners fast track there skills with workshops, rigging guides, maps, etc. So might be worth looking at that,

      Yeah it should be OK, most of those pinkies will continually move up and down the channel. Moving between PPB and the yarra channel. They look quite healthy. I usually only take pinkies home that are a bit bigger. There are resident bream there that mainly stay in the channel and that would be a personal call as the water there is a little dirty and polluted but only a few hundred meters from the mouth of PPB. Hope that helps.

      Hi Jason, My goto rod for some time now have been the Savage 1DFR 3-5 kilo rod 6 foot 6 in lenght. Its very versatile. Light enough for small fish and ive also caught big fish on it such as 6 kilo snapper. I use it with lures and bait. Honestly its a very good option. The white colour is also really good for noticing the nibbles. Really good for piers and land based stuff. One person even was surprised in seeing us put back a 21 cm. I see a lot of this happening. Should I report this to the fisheries so they can keep an eye?

    • @fishingmad
      @fishingmad  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks heaps for you comment. Unfortunately you are 100% right too often we see people keep undersize pinkies. Port melb seems to be a hot spot for this. Many of these people that keep undersized pinkies are well aware of the rules. Best thing to do is to call the VFA on 13FISH 133474 and report the incident. Those guys do a great job, unfortunately there often aren't enough fisheries offices so many incidents will not be dealt with in a timely manner. You can always note down the offenders licence plates and that will help the offices get them should they not arrive in time, or take some photos or video as evidence. I see people posting a lot of this activity on social media, which is great but does have some negative effects. so where possible certainly report it to the VFA and dont be afraid to call people out on it. I have done this on several occasions and my calls have seen some people have there gear ceased and fines issued.

      Thank you for you very honest response. In that case simply discretely call fisheries and go on fishing. Hopefully with a bit of luck fisheries will act quickly and get there quickly and stop them in there tracks. You are right there are a lot of rude and aggressive people when fishing. People who take undersize fish, people who think they own spots etc. One of the main reasons why i created the channel and website was to have a friendly environment where people can learn and share ideas. I hope this helps, Its awesome to see people just like you out fishing with your son. Im a big advocate for the work fisheries do, but they are under resourced. I have told them this first hand and hope in time they have more officers available who are readily available to help those that call for these exact reasons.
